Oil & Gas Developments Monthly Reportby David Kaminski, Director of Energy and Public Affairs

The Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program thought that the Utica would create 21,400 jobs in 2012. That’s what an economic survey by Kleinhenz & Associates, a business research firm, told OOGEEP in a September 2011 study it commissioned.

Well, OOGEEP is happy to assert that their projection was wrong. The number in the most recent study on economic impact of the Utica, performed by IHS of Englewood, Colo., and released in December, is 38,800 jobs in 2012.

This higher-than-expected number was cited several times during presentations at the Ohio Oil and Gas Association winter meeting last month in Columbus. Your Canton Regional Chamber participated and was a sponsor of the meeting. So were several other Stark County businesses involved in oil and gas. The show again took over nearly all the space at the Hilton Hotel at Easton.

There have been several studies of economic impact since the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce became involved in promoting business opportunity in the Utica. To compare one study against another requires knowledge of the methods of gathering and analyzing data. Even so, there clearly is something very good happening in employment because of the Utica.

We see that plain as day in the hundreds of jobs that Canton-based Chesapeake Energy has brought to the Utica, through its central offices and its subsidiaries. We see that in the other companies that have come to Canton and Stark County, such as new Chamber members Access Midstream and Velocity Midstream, to help bring Utica gas to market. We also see that in the engineering and other professional services jobs that have come to the Utica Capital.

Stark County is taking advantage of business opportunity connected with the Utica, without feeling a strain on community resources. There are strains elsewhere.

One place that is feeling the strain is Carroll County, where most of Chesapeake’s drilling activity is occurring. Yet the Carroll County Chamber is full of good news, even though truck traffic can make a drive through downtown Carrollton take 20 minutes, according to Carroll County Chamber Executive Amy Rutledge.

She was one of the speakers last month at an Ohio shale economic development forum in Boardman, produced by the Youngstown Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The Utica has been good for Carroll County government, according to Rutledge. Sales tax receipts in Carroll County were up $600,000 in 2012 compared with 2011. Because of this extra sales tax revenue, for the first time in five years county commissioners did not have to cut their budget.

The roads in Carroll County may be in their best condition ever, thanks to the needs of oil and gas. Chesapeake and other companies are making roadway improvements before they bring truck traffic to a drill site. An estimated $40 million in infrastructure improvements have been made by the oil and gas companies. That’s about 10 times the county’s annual road improvement budget, according to County Engineer Brian J. Wise.

The Chamber leader said Carroll County never had major corporations who wanted to make investments in the community. Now, oil and gas companies are making gifts to the YMCA and the parks of the county.

People opposed to oil and gas exploration might want to listen to stories like this.

The Canton/Stark County and Tuscarawas County Convention and Visitors’ Bureaus were awarded the opportunity to cohost a regional Familiarization Tour (FAM) in mid-February for bus tour planning professionals. The tour was held prior to the Midwest’s largest travel marketplace: Heartland Travel Showcase.

The FAM Tour allowed planning professionals to experience first-hand the potential tourism experiences available in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties. The goal of the tour is to encourage future tours to the area. The Canton/Stark and Tuscarawas CVBs escorted 14 Midwest bus tour operators around the region. During the tour, the tour planners had the opportunity to interact not only with Stark County tourism partners, but also with over a dozen regional partners, including Positively Cleveland, Akron/Summit County CVB and other attractions.

One of the highlights of the tour was a tradeshow and dinner at MAPS Air Museum. Stark County partners included the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Gervasi Vineyard, and Hartville Marketplace, among more than 30 others. “Tours of this magnitude allow us to give key tour planners an insider’s look at our amazing destinations. The dollars generated by tour buses to our region are a major driver of the economic impact of tourism,” said Allyson Bussey, tourism marketing manager for the Canton/Stark County CVB.

Since the tour, several tours have been booked, which will impact the community by over $100,000.

Stark State College online business surveyIn April, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce will help Stark State College by distributing a short, online business survey to our members. The survey, designed by Stark State, will gather information for Stark State as it considers an application for a federal workforce training grant. If Stark State applies for and receives the grant, it will be used to offer programs of two years or less in already established fields at Stark State. Those fields are Information Technology, and Cyber Security and Computer Forensics.

Under the grant, these programs would be directed toward workers who qualify for Trade Adjustment Assistance retraining. The grant would come through the Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program. Please look for a link to this survey coming via email from the Chamber on or near April 8 and determine whether you can take just a few minutes to help.

The Canton Regional Chamber is supporting the survey and this grant application

because of our commitment to workforce development through education.

Enshrinement Festival names 2013 key committee chairsBalloon Classic/Jackson-Belden Food Fest & Fireworks • Ribs Burnoff

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has named the following key committee chairs: Randy Reed, Balloon Classic, Todd Hawke, Jackson-Belden Food Fest & Fireworks, and Brian Harbert, Ribs Burnoff.

Reed is an escrow officer at Title One, Inc. and is a long-time Enshrinement Festival volunteer, previously serving on the Ribs Burnoff Committee for 21 years,

including two years as chairman. A graduate of East Canton High School and the former Stark Technical College, he is married to Jay. He is a past president and chairman of the board of Canton Jaycees, JCI Senatorship and WCR Affiliate of the Year. In addition to his support of the Jaycees, he has been active member of East Canton Rotary and the Stark County Association of Realtors. Assisting Reed as the event proudly celebrates its 27th anniversary this year is vice chairman Casey Weisend. What started in 1986 with 25 balloons at Weis Park has grown to a capacity field of nearly 70 balloons on the campuses of Kent State University at Stark and Stark State College, with nearly 125,000 people enjoying the two-and-a-half-day event. The Balloon Luminary was added in 1993 and is currently known as the Night Glow. And a further milestone was marked in 1995 when the Jackson-Belden Food Fest & Fireworks came under the umbrella of the Enshrinement Festival, joining forces with the Balloon Classic. This great partnership continues today. The Food Fest Committee is chaired this year by Todd Hawke, principal at GDK & Company, and also current Jackson Township Trustee. He is a graduate of Kenton Ridge High School and Ohio Wesleyan University, and has served

in various capacities on the Food Fest Committee since 2002. He is actively involved in the community and serves on the boards of the Jackson-Belden Chamber of

Commerce, Junior Achievement of East Central Ohio and American Cancer Society of Stark County. He and wife Tricia have one son and one daughter. Hawke will be assisted in the planning and staging of the Food Fest by vice chairman Carles Moore. It’s important to remember that the Balloon Classic and Food Fest activities this year will again take place one week earlier than was tradition for many years. The Balloon Classic and Food Fest activities will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 19, 20, and 21 so as not to be in conflict with several other major ballooning events throughout the country. The combined Balloon Classic/Food Fest event will include a wide variety of food and beverage vendors, children’s activity area, musical entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Pro Football Hall of Fame have named the following key committee chairs: Joann Smith, Special Events; Karen Myers, Food; Gregory Briggs, Staging; and Bernie Bresson, Community Parade.

Smith, coordinator of student teaching and field experience at Kent State University at Stark, is heading the Hall of Fame Special Events Committee

for the tenth year. Prior to this position, she served as chairman of the Enshrinement Festival Souvenir Committee and was a long-time member of the Appreciation Party Committee, and she continues to serve as co-chairman of the Ribs Burnoff judging sub-committee. She shares her musical gifts as a choir member at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, and as a singer and secretary of the board of trustees for Voices of Canton. She and husband Fred are the parents of two sons and proud grandparents of two granddaughters. As Special Events chairman, one of her major tasks will be to coordinate the Hall of Fame Board of Trustees Reception, which is staged as the first official function for the Enshrinees and their presenters, returning Hall of Famers and other out of town guests. Additionally, the Special Events Committee provides services such as emergency medical and dental assistance for guests of the Hall of Fame during their stay in Canton, and the committee is always on call to assist the Enshrinees and their families as needed. Smith will be assisted with these many duties by vice chairman Linda Leitzke. Myers is a 16-year member of the Food Committee, with this being her second year as chairman, and she brings great expertise to the task via her position as consumer services supervisor for the Canton

City Health Department. A graduate of East Canton High School and Kent State University, she has also taken classes at Walsh University. She and husband Les have two

children and three grandchildren. The Food Committee oversees the menu and wine selections and works closely with caterers to ensure the success of the food service to 12,000 guests at the Enshrinement Festival’s Fashion Show Luncheon, Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner and Enshrinees GameDay Roundtable. Serving as vice chairman of the committee is Dean Kahler.

Briggs is a sub-contractor in the flooring business, which brings a great amount of expertise to his first year as chairman of the Staging Committee, after serving as a volunteer on

the committee for the past 14 years. He graduated from Timken High School and attended Stark State College. An Eagle Scout, he is the proud father of one son and one daughter. The Staging Committee directs the planning, preparation and production of the Queen Pageant, Fashion Show Luncheon, Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner and Enshrinees GameDay Roundtable. Ben Zampino is assisting Briggs as vice chairman. Bresson graduated from the former Glenwood High School, is retired from Metal Master Inc., and is a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 33. Church and Lutheran Men in Mission Northeastern Ohio Synod, as well as secretary of National Lutheran Men in Mission Board. Previously a 20-year 4H member and advisor, he currently also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity. He and wife Chris, also a Community Parade Committee member, have two daughters and one granddaughter. The Community Parade is scheduled to kick-off at 2:30 p.m. on July 28, at Eleventh Street and Market Avenue North, and will travel south through the heart of downtown Canton. experience and unique leadership perspective.

Name: Michelle Henry

Title: Founder and President

Company: Center for Marketing and Opinion Research Leadership Program and Class: 23rd Signature Program Class

Why did you decide to participate in the program? Though I had lived in Stark County for more than 15 years at the time of my application to participate in the Signature Program of Leadership Stark County, I actually had little understanding and knowledge of the county and all it has to offer. As I made a commitment to becoming more knowledgeable about the opportunities and needs of my community, I felt that the Signature Program gave me the best

opportunity to make a positive contribution through service.

Describe your leadership style: Passion, integrity and collaboration. I strive to lead by example, instilling the staff with a passion for the work we do and where we are headed, while at the same time demonstrating an unwavering commitment to integrity. Providing an environment where team members collaborate in decision-making processes is integral to our success.

How have you used what you learned during the program in your career or in the workplace? As a small business owner, I have been able to apply the leadership skills I gained through the program in my own company, not only in the development of my team but also in how my business supports the community and the values of service we instill in our team. We regularly discuss leadership skills and explore the different traits that affect our ability to communicate with others within the team, both in parallel positions and in subordinate positions. In addition, we have adopted several philanthropic projects that we engage the whole staff in each year to develop a culture of service.

How has your experience in the program affected your service and leadership roles in the community? Before I participated in the program, I was unsure of how to find opportunities to engage in the community. The program

provided me awareness, confidence and the skills to make a difference in the community.

What nonprofit organizations do you serve and in what capacity?I am chair of board recruitment of the Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter, and vice president, membership for Akron Press Club.

What is your most significant memory or take-away from the program? Participating in the Human Services Day TANF TOWN simulation was such a powerful experience. Though my business focuses on supporting organizations that serve vulnerable populations in the county, this simulation brought a level of awareness to the critical issues facing this population and what a difficult task it is to provide support within a structure that has limited resources.

What would you say to someone considering applying to the program? The leadership skills, the understanding and awareness of your community and its needs, the relationships with other leaders sharing the same challenges and mindset, and the opportunity to serve your community in a more meaningful way…the only way to achieve all of this in one program is to participate in the Signature Program of Leadership Stark County.

How have you remained involved in Leadership Stark County since your graduation? Since I graduated from the LSC Signature program I have worked on both the economic and citizenship day committees, and the 25th anniversary committee, as well as speaking at various events. In addition, I have developed a network of other community leaders who I can share triumphs and disappointments with, and who I can work together with to improve the quality of the life in the community in which we live.

What issues do you think future leaders should focus on?There will never be a time when our most vulnerable populations are not in need of assistance. I think that leaders need to continue to understand the most effective methods of reaching and serving these populations, while engaging others in this mission of service as well. The need to collaborate and reduce redundancies to reach more people with shrinking resources is critical.

Distracted Driving Presentation | April Safety Council Luncheon featuring Sharon GeorgeDistracted driving is a dangerous epidemic on America’s roadways. In 2010 alone, more than 3,000 people were killed in distracted driving crashes and nearly half

a million are injured each year in crashes that involve distracted driving. Distraction occurs any time you take your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel, and your mind off the primary task of driving.

At the Stark County Safety Council luncheon on Thursday,Apr.4,SharonGeorge, director of Stark County Safe Communities, will define distracted

driving and explain the personal and financial impact to roadways users, businesses and the community in general.

George will also discuss what can be done by individuals, groups and businesses to address distracted driving and make our roadways a safe place to travel.

George has been employed by the Stark County Sheriff’s Office for the past 14 years. She has served in the capacity of director of Stark County Safe Communities since 2007. George also serves on the advisory committee of the Stark County Anti-Drug Coalition, The OVI Task Force, Young People Matter Coalition, Safe Kids Coalition, MADFACT and Parents Who Host. As a young woman, George experienced the personal loss of her 21-year-old sister, making traffic safety one of her personal passions. She lives in Stark County with her husband.

Young Professional ProfileEditor’s note: In keeping with ystark!’s mission—to attract and retain talented young people in Stark County – Action Newsletter will feature a monthly profile of a young

professional in Stark County.

Name: Quinn Parker

Age: 24

Occupation/Title/Place of work: Insurance Broker, Associate, GDK & Company

Why are you interested Stark County’s Young Professionals initiative?

I have lived in Canton, Ohio, my whole life. I want the best for the community. I want to be involved with the continued success and growth that our community experiences.

What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.?

ystark! does a great job of bringing young professionals together in many different ways. The two areas that I really love about ystark! are the opportunities to be involved in the different service projects in the local community, along with the recreation events that ystark! hosts, including the Dodgeball League and annual Golf Outing. I also loved playing euchre at the end of the year event at Brookside Country Club.

Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked?

Some say that I am still growing up. I was born at Mercy Medical Center and have lived in Canton from that day on!

Why have you chosen to live in Canton?

Along with being close to my family and friends, Canton is my home and I take great pride in our community.

What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area?

My wife and I just moved into our first home. I think that there are a lot of great opportunities for YPs with renting and owing in the area.

What do you like MOST about Canton?

The golf courses.

What do you like LEAST about Canton?

The traffic light on Tuscarawas St. by TD’s Tailgate Grill.

What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities?

I think that YPs have every opportunity in Canton to get involved in the cultural aspects of our community, and to find leadership roles in our many community organizations. That is something that is great about our community. If you want to do something or get involved you always have an opportunity to make that dream come true.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs?

Another Fortune 500 company and other business growth and expansion. Personally, I think it would really exciting to have a downtown par three golf course in the center city!

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton?

Go out to eat with my wife and then go to Picciano’s Martini Bar for drinks.

What would you change about Canton if you could?

Make all parking in Downtown Canton free.

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton?

Yes, I am passionate about Stark County. I want Canton to continue to be considered one of the best places to work and live in the State of Ohio.

What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why?

I would consider leaving Canton for the right business venture. The other place in the United States that I could live in would be Hilton Head. It is a very special place to my wife and me. We had our wedding on the beach on the island.
