A ‘look-alike’ replacement part could compromise safety, reduce performance, increase breakdowns, shorten vehicle service life and raise your operating costs. Avoid taking the risks by fitting only genuine WABCO parts. They are produced according to internationally recognized quality standards, which is why virtually every major global and regional original equipment manufacturer fits them as standard. And there is a two-year warranty on nearly every WABCO part. So you can count on reliable, safe, cost-effective performance that saves time and money while protecting your reputation as a reliable partner to your customers. Fleet Maintenance Wallchart

WABCO Expert Diagnostics is the multi platform tool that has now been available for two years. During this time we have made great strides with regard to system coverage with DAF CF, VOLVO FH, Renault Premium, Midlum & Kerax along with Mercedes Atego and Sprinter all having various diagnostic systems made available on the quarterly software updates that we publish. The Expert Diagnostics tool can now be used to diagnose faults on cars too, to do this you have to purchase the car software card from a registered SPX

dealer in the UK. For details on SPX dealers in the UK please contact the WABCO Technical desk. While we have made these software advances we have also been working on our hardware to support the tool which included new cables for MAN, Knorr-

Bremse and VOLVO being introduced.

One function that we have discussed with customers in the past but is now

available for the Expert

Diagnostics is the flight

recorder. The flight recorder helps when you

have an intermittent fault by letting you connect the Expert Diagnostics to your vehicle and letting you drive it, if the fault occurs during the time that you are driving the vehicle then you can analyse the data to see what the problem is, as the journey details are saved to a flashcard.Service resets for some of the Vehicle Manufacturers are also about to be added to the Expert Diagnostics functions, these will be well received by the market and greatly enhance the tools capabilities.

WABCO have now received the latest delivery of its highly popular Fleet Maintenance

Wallchart. Many of the large fleets and workshops are already using the Wallcharts to

help plan their vehicle maintenance with many more enquiring as to their availability.

Philip Laughton the WABCO

UK Technical Co-Ordinator

met up with Roger Clayton

the Technical Manager of

Hireco Trailer Rentals to

discuss the past, present

and future of both Hireco

and the trailer rental market.

Hireco is one of the larger

trailer rental companies in

the UK mainland and Ireland

and was formed around 30

years ago in Dublin. After

growing its market share and

building a strong foundation

in Ireland a ‘commercial

decision’ was taken to open

up sites in the mainland,

cumulating in Hireco now

having six depots including

Dublin, Belfast, Thatcham,

Ashton Under Lyne,

Wakefield and Billingham.

In this time period Roger

informs us that Hireco now

have many of the large fleets

in the UK mainland and

Ireland as its customers.

“ASDA, TDG, Fowler Welch

- Roadways and Dart

Distribution all regularly have

trailers on hire/contract with

us. We hope to build on our

strong relationship with our

existing customers while

looking at new avenues in

the trailer rental market”.

Roger agreed that the core

business of the trailer market

remains unchanged but took

time to explain how Hireco

is also looking at the new

opportunities that are open

to it, while still examining

the technological advances

for the customers. “Our

main, and the trailer hire

businesses main source of

work, is still Curtainsiders

and our fleet reflects that.

We still have a large amount

of Skeletal, Flat Platform,

Refrigeration and Box vans

but Curtainsiders still have

the lions share”.

“The market is buoyant at

this moment in time but it

is still a highly competitive

business and new

investments are analysed

before we make any

decisions. Our current fleet

stands at around 2,500 in

the UK mainland and 1,500

in Ireland, we usually aim to

keep our trailers between

4-5 years before we look to

sell them. In 2007 we took

delivery of 450 new trailers

while we have just placed

an order for 400 trailers with

the new WABCO trailer EBS

‘E’ braking system to be

delivered in 2008”.

Asked to explain more about

the technological advances

and innovations Hireco

offers to their customers

Roger explained “We

already have around 250

double deck Curtain sided

trailers in the UK mainland

but we have also placed

an order for some sloping

roof double decks for this

year. Trials on these trailers

have shown a substantial

fuel saving of around 0.7 to

0.8 miles per gallon (mpg)

because of the alignment of

the truck cab deflector and

the trailer sloping roof, these

fuel savings obviously give

our customers a healthy fuel

saving”.

Asked where Hireco are

heading in the future Roger

said “We look forward to

getting the new trailers

with WABCO trailer EBS

‘E’ fitted and enjoying

the aftermarket care that

WABCO provide. This is

provided by WABCO’s

internal & field service

technical teams coupled

with the commitment and

expertise that WABCO’s

53 Service Centres give

us with regard to warranty

and maintenance. We also

look to grow the business

profitably, while we also

hope to achieve longer term

contracts with our larger

customers. All our objectives

we set on a personal and

business level have to be

achieved while continuing to

provide the high standards

that we expect to deliver to

our customers”.

“We look forward to getting the new trailers with WABCO trailer EBS

‘E’ fitted and enjoying the aftermarket care that WABCO provide.”

WABCO named “Supplier of the year 2007” by the UK Automotive Distribution Federation (ADF) for the second consecutive year

Trailer EBS ‘E’ retrofit kit and SmartBoard offer

WABCO have been named “Commercial Vehicle Supplier of the Year 2007” by the Automotive Distribution Federation (ADF) for the second consecutive year. ADF cited WABCO’s ‘consistent performance’ as a key element of the company’s nomination.

The ADF annual awards honour companies that have shown the highest quality service and focus on customer satisfaction.

Quintin Cornforth, new president of the ADF, presented the trophy to WABCO during the ADF dinner and awards evening in Birmingham on December 6th 2007.

The award is based on intensive tests of the service quality provided by WABCO’s field sales force, internal sales and technical help desks. The testing was conducted through “mystery shoppers”, in addition, ADF

interviewed a number of the nominee’s customers during the selection process.

Chris Chapman the UK Aftermarket Manager collected the award on WABCO’s behalf and commented “To win this prestigious award two consecutive years is a great honour as it shows that we manage to maintain an excellent level of service time after time”.

Chris’s thoughts were backed by Jean-Francois Barth WABCO’s vice president for aftermarket who said “This award is an excellent close to a successful year for WABCO’s aftermarket business. Our UK team’s strong commitment to customer satisfaction is proving a strong differentiator when it comes to increasing our presence in the very competitive UK market”.

With Trailer ABS VCS II & Trailer EBS ‘D’ retrofit kits increasing in popularity, WABCO have taken this opportunity to create a kit containing the new Trailer EBS ‘E’ system.

As with our previous retrofit kits a new leaflet has been produced to show the features and benefits of the TEBS ‘E’ system as well as a full list of the parts contained in the kit.

WABCO have created a comprehensive set of instructions to assist in the fitting of the new system, and there is also the added benefit of having the option of fitting SmartBoard at the same time as the trailer is being upgraded.

SmartBoard not only gives you the features and benefits listed below but if you place an order for SmartBoard at the same time as ordering an EBS ‘E’ retrofit kit you will

receive it at a discounted price.

Features and Benefits of SmartBoard:

• Air suspension operation e.g lifting, lowering and change of the lift axle without the need of additional valves for ECAS utilisation

• Diagnostic & system messages available without the need for additional workshop visits

• Automatic mileage display without the EBS socket via an independent sensor

• Axle load data for efficient trailer loading and overload conditions for safe operation

• Easy operation via easy to read graphical display, user defined preference function to commonly used functions and available in nine different language settings.

Developed by WABCO and Michelin, IVTM has been successfully launched for OE and aftermarket application on trucks, trailers and buses. IVTM continuously monitors tire pressure’s and detects under or over inflation, as well as slow leaks. In addition to its economic benefits, IVTM

improves overall vehicle safety as correct tire inflation contributes to better road handling and a shorter braking distance.Tire failures account for 26 percent of commercial vehicle breakdowns – and 85 percent of all tire failures start with slow leaks, which can be detected by IVTM. The system pays for itself after preventing just one tire-related breakdown. According to field tests

on buses, IVTM leads to long-term operational cost savings of £300 per vehicle per year.To see what savings IVTM could potentially make to your business please access the new IVTM Return on Investment (ROI) calculator at the WABCO internet site.

In the event of a leaking tire, WABCO Tire Premium Seal makes the repair process very simple, quick and safe, avoiding changing a wheel and reduces vehicle downtime. A tire can be temporarily repaired and inflated in a few minutes – compared to an average 45 minutes to change a wheel in often very dangerous roadside conditions. Puncture holes caused by a nail or a bolt up to 10mm in diameter can be reliably sealed and the tire re-used

for up to 620 miles or 14 days and to a maximum speed of 50 mph. After that, the tire can be repaired by an authorized workshop avoiding the extra cost of a new tire.

“The safety benefits for drivers and passengers and the cost savings for the fleet owners are significant,” says Jean-Francois Barth, WABCO Vice President Aftermarket. “Fleet owners can benefit even more if they combine the new

WABCO Tire Premium Seal with our Integrated Vehicle Tire Pressure Monitoring System (IVTM). Once IVTM has detected a leak, WABCO Tire Premium Seal enables the driver to seal the tire within a few minutes, reducing downtime and the risk of accidents to a minimum.”

WABCO Tire Premium Seal is based on latex-free sealant technology, which is environmentally friendly and uses micro-fiber particles

with outstanding sealing properties.

The sealant has safety certifications from major industry bodies like DEKRA inGermany. The repair kit has been tested and approved by leading international vehicle manufacturers.

New WABCO Tire Premium Seal is an innovative first-aid kit for leaking commercial vehicles tubeless tires, offering increased safety and significant cost savings for truck and bus fleets.

On the 12th & 13th of February WABCO UK held its annual Service Centre meeting at its UK headquarters situated in Leeds. Attendees from the 53 approved Service Centres in the UK were split into two sessions held in the new WABCO UK training facility and taken through topics such as, “Where WABCO are today as a company”, “Focus on Fleets”, “New products”, “WABCO Expert diagnostics” and “The Service Centre network”.

Unlike previous meetings there was a large element of practical demonstrations where WABCO UK Field Support Engineers took the opportunity to show the attendees it’s workshop trailer which has recently been fitted with Trailer EBS

‘E’ and SmartBoard. This demonstration also included showing the Service Centres the new TEBS ‘E’ software including the additional generic functions on offer.

All the attendees were also impressed with the SmartBoard’s ease of use and also to find out that it can be retro-fitted to work with a TEBS ‘D’ system. The final part of the practical presentation was a look at how the new Tire Premium Seal (TPS) worked when fitted to one of WABCO’s tractor units.

Attendees stayed overnight in Leeds on the 12th and everyone enjoyed corporate hospitality at the Leeds United football ground. The evening function included a three course meal in the Jack Charlton Suite along

with corporate seating for the evening game against Nottingham Forest.

At the evening function the two Regional and one National Service Centre winners were unveiled. These winners were announced by Chris Chapman the UK aftermarket team leader, and trophies were presented to the winners by former Leeds & England footballer Alan Clarke.

Chris Chapman later gave reasons why the meetings are a success and highly valued “The meetings show the Service Centre’s that they are a highly valued part of the WABCO team, it also gives them a chance to meet each other and build strong relationships and bonds that lead to a stable and efficient

Service Centre network”

Philip Laughton the UK

Technical Support Co-

Ordinator also spoke of his

delight at how the meetings

and evening function went

“ Everyone attending had

a chance to relax in the

evening but also went

away having gained more

knowledge about WABCO,

how they as Service Centres

fit into our structure and

what we are working

towards with regard to

existing and future products.

We are proud to have a

Service Centre network that

is now regularly audited, and

the winners excelled in all

areas of service from both

WABCO’s and its customers

points of view”.

The winners were as follows:

• National Service Winner: Bibby Commercials Ltd (01925 762143)

• Northern Region Service Centre Winner: Hodgkin & Lynch Ltd (0151 928 7310)

For safety’s sake, it pays to give them close attentionShock absorbers are of great importance in every vehicle. Driving with worn shock absorbers can have serious consequences for the safety of the driver, and put other road users in danger. In this article we take a look at the replacement of shock absorbers, taking into account key points for attention. A shock absorber has two important safety functions – damping the suspension movement, and helping to keep the tires in contact

with the road surface. When a shock absorber is worn-out the tires lose grip and driving becomes very dangerous. In order to ensure superior stability and safer braking, it is necessary that all the shock absorbers on an axle are replaced at the same time. When and why should a shock absorber be replaced?Since shock absorbers on commercial vehicles, unlike those fitted in passenger cars, are not subject to mandatory periodic testing, it is very important that a preventative check of the shock absorbers is carried

out in the workshop during scheduled maintenance. Variables affecting shock absorber life, for example, are terrain, quality of the road surface and the load carried by the vehicle.Indicators pointing to the need to replace shock absorbers include:• Irregular wear of a tire, for

example a tire with a bubble

• Braking distance is longer than it should be

• The comfort level is inferior

• Oil leaking, visible on the outer surface of the shock absorber

• Heavy damage to the

WABCO has announced its support of the UN/ECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) agreement that paves the way for new EU legislation mandating electronic stability control (ESC) systems for some heavy truck/trailer combinations and touring coaches. The agreement allows the EU to make ESC systems mandatory for new vehicles from 2010.“We are proud to have brought the first ESC

systems to market in 2001 and to have participated in the UN/ECE working group on braking,” said WABCO chief executive officer Jacques Esculier. “We are confident that this agreement will help expedite the introduction of similar requirements in other parts of the world,” he added.WABCO pioneered commercial vehicle ESC in 2001 when it offered the system as an option on the company’s electronic braking system (EBS).

Stability control systems help drivers to maintain control of their vehicles in a variety of potentially dangerous situations by automatically taking corrective action. Stabilization is achieved by selective braking on each wheel while simultaneously reducing engine power.Today, less than 10 percent of all new heavy trucks and buses in Europe are equipped with electronic stability controls.

“Trust is the foundation of our business,” states WABCO

Brand Protection Manager, Dirk Vandeput. He continues:

“We make sure that our Ethical Standards and Values are

followed in every aspect of our business – in products,

services and other support functions, such as marketing.

People trust us and our business capabilities. That is why it

is so prejudicial to see our products being copied or pirated

by companies that do not follow these same standards and

are taking advantage of the trust our customers have in

WABCO.”

And it’s true! There are products in the market that look like original WABCO products, but which do not perform as well. These pirated products could cause safety problems.

Dirk Vandeput says, “We have encountered products that

intentionally deceive customers by being exact copies of

our products, and also imitate our packaging and document

lay-outs. In some cases they even carry brand names

similar to ours. Sometimes these companies cross the line

and become an illegitimate business partner… maybe even

dragging their partners into illegal activity without their

knowing!”

WABCO does not accept such conduct. “We closely monitor

global markets and, where possible, we enforce our legal

rights through lawsuits and administrative remedies. We

are very vigilant - although it might take time and effort, we

pursue these actions and we are quite successful in our

enforcement activities!

We take these measures for a very simple, very important

reason – to protect our customers by preserving the safety

and performance of the systems that carry the WABCO

name.

Our last victory was a case of intellectual property

infringement where a company outside Europe copied one

of our inventions. They tried to market their product by

stating that it was better than ours, which was completely

false. Needless to say, they are no longer in the market.”

We are driven to sustain the trust of our customers in

WABCO as one of the world’s leading providers of advanced

braking, stability, suspension and transmission control

systems.
