THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

First Reading: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19 Peter reminds the people that they allowed Jesus to be killed, and preferred to allow a murderer to be released. But God raised him from the dead as had been prophesied. Therefore, all people should believe and turn to God, that their sins might be forgiven. Second Reading: I John 2:1-5a Jesus was offered up for the sins of the world. The only way to prove true faith in him, is to honor his commandments. Anyone who claims to believe, yet does not keep his word, does not truly believe. Gospel: Luke 24:35-48 Jesus appeared to two disciples, though at first they feared he was a ghost. Jesus ate with them to prove he was not a ghost. He explained that he had fulfilled the prophets words about him. He also explained that in his name they must preach doing penance for the forgiveness of sins.

In today’s Gospel we see that the disciples of Jesus were confused and frightened by the crucifixion of Jesus. His friends were unable to see why Jesus had to die. Then Jesus came back to life - appeared to His friends - and helped them to understand that He died so that sins would be forgiven! After they had eaten a meal together, Jesus tells the disciples that they will be His witnesses - to help others understand the amaz-ing love of God. We continue to be witnesses for Christ when partake of His Body and Blood in the Eucharist and spread the Good News of God’s mercy and forgiveness!.

“The way we may be sure that we know Him is to keep His commandments.”

1 John 2:3

On this 3rd Sunday of Easter, we continue to hear the Gospel accounts of Jesus' appearances to his disci-ples following His Resurrection. Today's reading, taken from the Gospel of Luke, follows immediately after the report of Jesus' appearance to his disciples on the road to Emmaus. Jesus greets his disciples with the words, “Peace be with you.”

Even as they hear Jesus' greeting of peace, the disci-ples are startled and terrified. They are uncertain about what to make of the figure before them and, quite understandably, they mistake Jesus for a ghost!

Jesus invites them to experience his resurrected body with their senses, to see and to touch. The figure be-fore them is flesh and bone, still bearing the marks of crucifixion. Although the disciples cannot forget his suffering and death, peace begins to take root in their hearts, as their fears turn to joy and amazement!

The Last Supper and the meals that Jesus shared after His Resurrection show us the significance of the Eucharist. So, too, our celebration of the Mass is an encounter with Jesus, through the Word and the Sac-rament of the Eucharist. As Jesus commissions His disciples to be witnesses to what Scriptures foretold, our celebration of the Eucharist commissions us, too!

Let us pray…

Lord Jesus, we celebrate Your Resurrection and we rejoice in Your love. You are now with us offering us forgiveness, peace, and new life. Help us to recognize You in the

Breaking of the Bread, and strengthen us to share the Good News of Your rising with others. Help us to show our love for You by showing kindness at home, at school, and in every place You lead us.

We ask this in Your Holy Name. Amen.
