HB HOA!Our beloved weekly Afro-Soul-Deep house throwdown turns two this month, and we’ve invited down two of our favourite DJs to get the party started properly on Friday April 10 at the Dek on 8.

Page 51: Infusion # 245: April 5-19 2015

BLACK COFFEE The South African DJ is no stranger to our decks, having played here several times before, and consistently torn the (imaginary) roof off the club.

A multi-award winning producer and DJ, he’s released four albums to date and is one of the most recognized DJs in Africa. He’s also an in-demand name in Ibiza, with several high profile sets at DC 10 last summer where he got to play his own brand of soulful tech-house to the White Isle massive.

BORN TO FUNK Another hugely talented DJ, and another regular in the HoA DJ Booth is Dutch DJ, Born To Funk. As the name suggests, funk features high in his sets, and he’s a noted producer as well, having had tracks released on Defected, Hed Kandi and Ministry of Sound. He’s a wizard behind the decks, often working 4 turntables at once, teasing in Acapellas and samples and making sure your hands are up in the air.

DJ Heroes #2Matthew CharlesNext up in our DJ Hereos series is Matthew Charles, a Scottish DJ who’s played virtually every club worth its Tequila salt in the city for over a decade. He’s also a Café Mambo Ibiza resident, the captain of the renowned Never Get Out The Boat parties and burgeoning tech-house producer to boot…

Page 69: Infusion # 245: April 5-19 2015

First club you played in Dubai? Planetarium was the club at the time and Wafi was one of the main places to hang out. I was resident in a bar/restaurant next door called Ginseng which was Asian fusion with the most amazing cocktails. It was a great pre party for Planetarium which had most of the international DJs visiting at that time. However at the same time and as part of my residency I played Carters in Wafi on a Sunday night. It was and still is a bar/restaurant with a band but Sunday night was the band’s night off and it was one of the best nights of the week. Sensual Sundays was legendary with queues out the door and down the stairs and the people were there to party. To this day some of my best memories of Dubai were made in Carters on a Sunday.

First track you played? Wow you’re really testing an old timers memory, I can’t even begin to think what my first track would have been. Something very deep I’d imagine as it would probably have been a warm up or early in Ginseng. Maybe even Soul II Soul ‘Back To Life’ or something. Big tracks for Carters at the time were things like Junior Jack’s ‘E-Samba’ and Lee Cabrera’s ‘Shake it (Move A Little Closer).’

Best change in the city’s club scene? The best change is its constant evolvement and improvement. When I got here there were very few clubs or decent bars and the scene was very small. As the city has grown the scene has grown exponentially. This of course causes its own problems but it’s been crazy watching it evolve and in all honesty right now it’s probably the most exciting it’s every been.

Worst change in the city’s club scene? It’s easy to say the bottle service scene but that particular scene has always been here, it’s just grown too. From a personal point of view it’s the increase in the number of bedroom DJs who are willing to play for free, but that’s another story and my responsibility to prove why I’m worth being paid.

Best club still running from when you started? Hmm, that’s a hard one as clubs like Boudoir and Zinc which were running when I got here were never my places to go but you have to admire their longevity in an ever changing

landscape. Sho Chos too, a place I’ve started playing again recently with the former Electric Days now Night Vibes crew was there when I got here and is still as an amazing setting. I think Ben McDonald’s GlobalFunk is the only regular night I can think of that’s still going. I’m sure there’s more but these are the ones on my radar.

The key to longevity as a DJ is… That is a very good question and I’m not really sure there’s a definitive answer as taste in music and what’s going to happen next come from the gut and I’m not sure you can teach that. You can however teach professionalism, networking and marketing, all disciplines DJs need to become versed in to survive. I guess the ultimate ingredient is passion in what you do, if that leaves you it shows and it’s difficult to maintain the standards required to cut through all the noise and distractions for punters and promoters alike.

The best way to get gigs is… Create your own. Start your own parties, book your self and go from there. Build a little following and then when you do approach other promoters, they can see you’ll add numbers to their crowd and are of value. But when you do approach these promoters at least make sure you’ve been down to their night, know what it’s about and get an idea of where you would fit in. I will always give new DJs who have come to the party and introduced themselves a chance before some random sending me a message on Facebook.

Unsung hero? Bong (the original, not the new events company) was always one of my Dubai heroes, he was throwing the best parties when I got here along with his resident DJ Kennedy. Bong now runs the excellent agency Brag and is the main driving force behind Fashion Forward but I’d love him to throw one of his old parties in the Aviation club, happy memories.

Upcoming gigs? It’s all about my boat Party Never Get Out The Boat. April dates are Friday 3rd, 17th and 24th. I’ve got some great line ups booked and the weather will be amazing, I can’t wait to get stuck in.

With DIFC bar The Grammercy getting behind local live music, we caught up their Thursday night resident, indie-acoustic singer Abbo to talk Bob Dylan, Simon Cowell and M&Ms…My first musical influence was… Bob Dylan would have to be the name that springs to mind. His songs had such an impact on me at an early age. Some of them even gave me nightmares. The last pop star I liked was… That would be a tie between Pink and Alicia Keys.My sound is best described as… Raspy Bittersweet Alternative Acoustic.Best piece of advice you’ve received? Never apologise for your music. What’s your musical guilty pleasure? Simplicity. The best band in the UAE is… The one I’m listening to on any given evening. There are more great bands here than people realize, making it just as important for spaces like The Gramercy to give us the stage we deserve. But if I had to choose just one, with all due humility, it would be DaVinci Park, my own band.Lamest claim to fame? I once sang backing vocals ages ago for Simon Cowell’s singing group Il Divo but had no idea who they were. When I make it, the one thing I want on my rider is… A large ice statue of a giraffe with one green M&M in the centre. My musical motto is… Everyone has an opinion on music, so don’t ask too many people for opinions. Trust what you do and keep doing it, but never stop learning, have a sense of humour and try to stay humble. That’s not really a motto is it? Still, you get the drift.Best gig you’ve played? My last one.And the worst? My last one.Best lyrics of all time? Not sure about the best but this most definitely made me smile: I walk a mile in your shoesAnd now I’m a mile awayAnd I’ve got your shoes www.soundcloud.com/abbomusic

LISA MAFFIA VS ROMEO

The verdict: It’s ladies first this issue, as Lisa Maffia takes the honours. Garage Nation, Friday April 10, Level 41, Media One Hotel, 9pm-3am. Featuring Lisa Maffia, Romeo, Oxide and Neutrino, Matt Jam Lamont, Shola Ama and more. Advance tickets Dhs120.

Your best dance move is…

Shuffling. Two step, leave everyone else to sweat, we cool over here…

What’s your best claim to fame?

I shot for Vogue UK with Mario Testino.

Sipping a mint tea with the Queen of England was cool, in

my dreams…

It’s not big and clever but…

I swallow chewing gum. It’s definitely worth it and makes complete sense.

What’s your answer to everything?

Basically. OK cool.

What’s the best insult you could give each other?

Romeo you’re so laid back I think you are sleeping most of

the time. What ever Lisa says is not true. Plus she dribbles on the plane!

We have a pair of tickets to give away,

In a world saturated by tech, tablets and smart phones, tabletop gaming is making a massive comeback. We’re not talking Snakes & Ladders but a chance for you to command an entire squadron of attack craft in Star Wars X-Wing Minatures Game (check www.battlezone.me for more details).

4) Award winning artist and creator Andy Suriano is heading over to share his knowledge and unique art with the fans. Best known for his animation on shows like Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Batman: Brave & the Bold, we will definitely be asking for a quick Samurai Jack sketch!

Of course there are heaps more reasons to visit this years event, aside from the international guests, there is a stack of homegrown talent to keep an eye open for, including Amna Al Blooshi, Saleh Al Braik, Omar Butti, Jalal Luqman and Ahmed Al-Nasheet.

The atmosphere is electrifying and we are really excited about getting involved in one of our most favourite weekenders of the DXB event calendar!

Dubai DJ Boot Camp to launch

Bouncer reveals that all he really wants to do after a hard night’s work is listen to Taylor Swift and have a bubble bath

The city’s trend for bootcamps has hit the dance music world, with a DJ Boot Camp now up and running in Dubai. DJs will learn how to illegally download the Beatport Top 100, how to plug and play with a Traktor controller and how to use their parent’s credit card to purchase their social media following. Alongside that, DJs will also be taught how to start a Twitter beef, how to undercut other DJs and, crucially, how to press the SYNC button. ‘Older skills like mixing, track selection and reading the crowd are virtually redundant now,’ said camp leader Mustapha DJ. ‘It’s all about getting your brand out there and making sure you look the part.’
