0\LPOLY REPORT California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo 93407 UPdate on the Cal PolY Plan 200 ideas proposed; collaboration encouraged The following was prepared by the Academic Affairs office. Some 200 "statements of intent" have been filed with the Academic Affairs office by individuals and cam- pus groups who plan to write propos- als addressing goals outlined by the Cal Poly Plan. These statements can be reviewed in the Kennedy Library, Academic Senate office, and all university vice presidents' and deans' offices. Currently, staff personnel are as- sessing the statements to determine how related proposals might be com- bined or partnerships encouraged, and individuals will be contacted whose planned projects appear to be linked. The Cal Poly Plan steering com- mittee is encouraging proposals that reflect collaboration among divisions, departments, and other units even though this quality is not required for a proposal to be selected for funding. Completed responses to the Steer- ing Committee's "request for propos- als" (RFP) is Monday, May 13, and finished proposals will still be accepted on that date from individuals or units that did not file a statement of intent. Copies of the RFP can be found in the library and Academic Senate of- fice, or they can be requested from Academic Affairs or through an e- mail message addressed to polyplan@oboe. Meanwhile, the steering committee is conducting another student survey, asking for views on the goals, prin- ciples, funding priorities, and funding methods for the Cal Poly Plan. The survey is to be distributed to a scien- tifically constructed sample of classes. Finally, forums on the Cal Poly Plan, open to all faculty members, students, and staff members, are scheduled for 11 am to 1 pm Tuesday, April 23, in Chumash 204, and from 11 am to 1 pm Tuesday, April 30, in UU 220. Members of the steering committee will be available to answer questions and receive advice from the campus community. flodem pool to grow by summer quarter To improve off-campus access to campus computers, the university will increase the number of its modems and add new high-speed modems by the beginning of summer quarter. State employees, both faculty and staff members, will have free use of the new pool. Students, foundation employees, ASI employees, and other university- approved users can have access for an $11 monthly fee. Those who don't want to pay the fee will still have off- campus access to on-line networks through a smaller pool of free modems. The optional fee for access to the new modem pool, effective June 17, is required because state funding is inad- equate to pay for the expansion needed. How many modems the university adds will depend on how many stu- dents and others decide to pay the fee. Information Technology Services plans to add enough devices to ensure at least one modem for every 12 users. David Walch, interim associate vice president for information tech- nology services, said the pool will provide better service for more hours at a lower price than commercial ser- vices do. Seven other CSU campuses charge students and employees alike at least $12.50 a month for limited service through Sprint, Walch said. Vol. 49, No. 21 Aprl19,1996 Summer classes added to boost enrollment Faculty and staff- particularly academic advisors -are urged to en- courage students to consider enrolling in Cal Poly's summer quarter. According to Glenn Irvin, associ- ate vice president for academic af- fairs, the university wants to begin restoring summer enrollment to levels seen a few years ago before budget reductions cut into the program. As a start in this restoration, 438 class sections are scheduled for this summer, 46 more than in the previous year. About 1,500 more student spaces will be available. "We want to give students more options," Irvin said, "allowing them to elect summer quarter in lieu of a quarter in the academic year. Or they can use summer quarter to accelerate their time toward graduation." This year a few classes will be of- fered in five-week terms as opposed to running the full 10-week quarter. In subsequent years, the university hopes to increase the number of sec- tions taught on flexible schedules, giving students and faculty members more choices, Irvin said. Growth in the summer term is ad- vantageous to the faculty in that it will again provide instructors with op- portunities to teach for extra compen- sation or to select summer quarter as one of their normal teaching terms. The efficient, year-round use of fixed facilities is also a university goal, Irvin said. And he pointed out that any increase in summer enroll- ment will lessen population pressures during the academic year as Cal Poly begins to rebuild the student body to a mandated 15,000 full-time students, the physical capacity of the present campus. The summer class schedule goes on sale April 26, and CAPTURE be- gins May 9.
