Hafemeister wins national award for arms-control work
Physics professor David Hafemeister has been recognized by The American Physical Society for his work in the areas of arms control and nuclear weapons
He won the 1996 Leo Szilard Award for Physics in the Public Intershyest given by the societys Forum on Physics and Society
Hafemeister is being honored for applying physics to issues of nuclear weapons proliferation arms control more efficient use of energy reshysources and other matters of public policy and for effective communicashytion on such issues to the physics community policy makers and the general public
World-renowned astronomer Carl Sagan is a past recipient of the award He and six other scientists earned it for their study of the possibility of a nuclear winter
Hafemeister came to Cal Poly in 1969 Since then he has spent more than eight years off campus working in government arms-policy circles He has spent time at MIT Lawrence Bershykeley Laboratory the State Departshyment Stanford and Princeton
Hafemeisters interest in nuclear weapons and the arms race goes back to his post-graduate days working at the Los Alamos National Laboratory
He won an American Association
for the Advancement of Science conshygressional fellowship to work on the staff of Sen John Glenn of Ohio in 1975-76
The next year he served as science adviser to Glenn and the next two years he spent in the State Departshyment - first as special assistant to the undersecretary of state for security asshysistance science and technology then as expert consultant to the deputy asshysistant secretary of state for nuclear nonproliferation policy
In 1988 Hafemeister testified beshyfore the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and from 1990 to 1992 he served as one of three full-time proshyfessional staff members handling arms-control matters for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee
He was part of an official US delshyegation that traveled to the Kremlin the week the USSR ceased to exist to discuss the destruction of nuclear weapons
In 1992-93 he again was a professhysional staff member to John Glenn this time for the Governmental Affairs Committee which Glenn chaired
Hafemeister served as chair of the American Physical Society Forum on Physics and Society during 1985-86
He is scheduled to receive the Szilard Award at the societys national meeting in May in Indiana

The exhibit titled Three Women Three Worlds will help usher in Womens Week set for Friday Feb 9 through Friday Feb 23
The artists Ada Charvalia Betty Field-Haley and Gail Lapins each tell a different story through their paintings
Charvalia paints pastel male and female nudes She paints her figures at unusual angles and uncomfortable postures and she diminishes the difshyferences in male and female torsos by rendering pronounced musculature for both sexes sometimes blurring the borderline between male and female
Field-Haley is known for vivid washytercolor landscapes that have a strong Oriental influence and capture the spirit energy and peace she finds in the woods
Lapins works in both acrylic and oil Her paintings explore the emoshytions and realities of the human conshydition in all its forms
My imagery of man reflects the world and time we live in I want my large canvases to surround the viewer to stir senses other than sight Lapins said

Artist-author-professor Betty LaDuke will exhibit her paintings and color etchings of contemporary Africa from Monday Jan 8 through Sunshyday Feb 4 in the University Art Galshylery in the Dexter Building

A group of Cal Poly dairy science students was awarded a $2000 scholshyarship for winning the overall compeshytition at the 74th Collegiate Dairy Product Evaluation Contest
The team also came in first in the all-products category at the competishytion held in Chicago
Team members were seniors Kyle Jensen John Devin Woodill and Hai Ngo
Woodill was named the top indishyvidual overall and won the All Prodshyucts Award for placing 2nd in milk and butter Hai Ngo took individual 3rd in butter The team scored 2nd in ice cream 6th in milk 3rd in cottage cheese 11th in cheddar 4th in yogurt and 1st in butter

Instructionally Related Activities are those student-focused activities and laboratory experiences that are partially sponsored by an academic discipline or department and are inteshygrally related to their formal instrucshytional programs

Report accidents when injuries occur
Faculty and staff members are reshyminded of their responsibility to file a StudentVisitor Accident Report when students and visitors are injured on campus
This includes students injured in an approved off-campus activity as well as in a classroom or laboratory or on a field trip All types of accidents involving visitors and students on campus must also be reported
The completed accident form should be sent to Administration and Finance For information or to obtain copies of the report form call Nancy Vilkitis at ext 2171
When students and visitors are inshyjured in an ASI activity or an ASI fashycility such as the Recreation Center or the University Union ASI accident reports should be sent to the ASI Business Office

Please dont confuse the Student Visitor Accident Report with the State of California Employers Report of Occupational Injury or Illness (Workers Compensation) or the Foundation Accident Report which should be completed when student asshysistants faculty members and staff middot members are injured on the job

Faculty and staff members in charge of the event class or activity in which an injury occurs or those who witnessed the accident should complete the report within 24 hours of the incident In some cases the reshyport might have to be filed by the inshyjured individual
For Workers Compensation the supervisor of the injured employee is responsible for submitting a report to the appropriate office

A $10 minimum charge will be billed for such items as business cards letterhead and invitations
Additional costs are $15 for each 8 12 inch by 1linch page such as curriculum and career flyers $40-$50 for a basic three-fold brochure and $40 for 11 inch by 17 inch posters
Prices for larger or different typeshysetting projects will be determined when they are submitted

Hearings set to discuss transportation issues
Hearings are scheduled for county residents concerned with regional bus service and traffic on the Cuesta Grade and all employees affected are encouraged to participate
The first hearing is scheduled for 930am Wednesday Jan 10 in the Board of Supervisors chambers in the County Government Building downtown The meeting will cover unmet regional bus needs - not San Luis Obispo city bus service
People affected by regional routes are those from Morro Bay Los Osos Santa Maria the Five Cities area and the North County Anyone who would like to see bus routes or times changed to meet specific needs is enshycouraged to attend this once-a-year hearing to express any concerns

Charvalia paints pastel male and female nudes She paints her figures at unusual angles and uncomfortable postures and she diminishes the difshyferences in male and female torsos by rendering pronounced musculature for both sexes sometimes blurring the borderline between male and female
Field-Haley is known for vivid washytercolor landscapes that have a strong Oriental influence and capture the spirit energy and peace she finds in the woods

Hearings are scheduled for county residents concerned with regional bus service and traffic on the Cuesta Grade and all employees affected are encouraged to participate
The first hearing is scheduled for 930am Wednesday Jan 10 in the Board of Supervisors chambers in the County Government Building downtown The meeting will cover unmet regional bus needs - not San Luis Obispo city bus service
People affected by regional routes are those from Morro Bay Los Osos Santa Maria the Five Cities area and the North County Anyone who would like to see bus routes or times changed to meet specific needs is enshycouraged to attend this once-a-year hearing to express any concerns

Hearings are scheduled for county residents concerned with regional bus service and traffic on the Cuesta Grade and all employees affected are encouraged to participate
The first hearing is scheduled for 930am Wednesday Jan 10 in the Board of Supervisors chambers in the County Government Building downtown The meeting will cover unmet regional bus needs - not San Luis Obispo city bus service
People affected by regional routes are those from Morro Bay Los Osos Santa Maria the Five Cities area and the North County Anyone who would like to see bus routes or times changed to meet specific needs is enshycouraged to attend this once-a-year hearing to express any concerns

Hearings are scheduled for county residents concerned with regional bus service and traffic on the Cuesta Grade and all employees affected are encouraged to participate
The first hearing is scheduled for 930am Wednesday Jan 10 in the Board of Supervisors chambers in the County Government Building downtown The meeting will cover unmet regional bus needs - not San Luis Obispo city bus service
People affected by regional routes are those from Morro Bay Los Osos Santa Maria the Five Cities area and the North County Anyone who would like to see bus routes or times changed to meet specific needs is enshycouraged to attend this once-a-year hearing to express any concerns
