Dallas County District At-torney Craig watkins, one ofthe most effective and re-spected law enforcement of-ficials in the country, hassuggested that an honest andfrank discussion on the topicof race take place in America. He said that Dallas could bea good place to start the ef-fort.

the suggestion came fromwatkins after three AfricanAmerican men were exoner-ated in an aggravated robberycase. After the decision, watkins said that too manypeople of color are beingwrongfully charged and con-victed in the nation’s courtsbecause of the color of theirskin, and not because theyare law violators.

watkins’ thoughts about aconversation around the topicof race were echoed by statedistrict court Judge lenalevario who presided overthe case in which the threewrongly convicted men were

release. “the time for subtlyhas come and gone.” SaidJudge levario.

Since 2001, 30 men andwomen of color have beenexonerated in cases that havebeen brought against them inDallas County, according tolaw enforcement officials. Most of the cases moved for-ward in the courts based onfaulty eyewitness testimonyand illegal actions by prose-cutors. Some were deathpenalty cases.

During his tenure as DallasCounty Prosecutor, watkinshas appeared on national tel-evision speaking about theplight of wrongfully con-victed individuals. He hasworked closely with the in-

nocent Project, a nationalmovement that has won nu-merous cases for men whohave been wrongfullycharged and convicted. Manyof these men served decadesin prison before being foundinnocent.

the last time that seriousquestions about a discussionon race in American wereraised was when PresidentBill Clinton was in office.the President appointed acommission headed by thelate historian John HopeFranklin. it held hearings andmade some headway but wasderailed largely because ofthe President’s problems withthe media.

“i believe that all of uswould benefit from a discus-sion about the role that raceplays in our society,” saidC.t. toney, an area businessowner. “there is no doubt inmy mind that it affects muchof what takes place in our so-ciety. i back District Attorneywatkins in his appeal.”

the recent storms that ravaged our community, collapsing homes and damaging businesses didnot take any lives. And for that we should bevery grateful. During the past week i have lis-tened to our many friends in the faith communitywho have unanimously declared that only thehand of God prevented anyone from losing theirlives. God knew about the storm before it came, and God knew about it when it was over.

it was the spirit of God that allowed countlessnumbers of volunteers to rush to the aide of ourfellow citizens whose homes were badly dam-aged or destroyed. Members of the clergy, suchas Reverend Dedrick Jennings, went into theirown pockets to purchase personal care items andfood for residents who were in need.

Politicians such as State Representative HelenGiddings, Deputy Mayor tennell Atkins, formerMayor Dwaine Caraway and State Representa-tive Yvonne Davis, among others, did not sleepduring the twenty-four hour period as theyrushed from one area to another to assist resi-dents. their actions were in the spirit of the agedold saying, “we are Family.”

Dallas is blessed with an abundance of people

who quickly rush to be with neighbors orstrangers who are in need of assistance. Our faithcommunity has a reputation for being there forpeople whose lives have crumbled around them.

imagine that your family was one of thosewhich lost nearly everything during the recentstorm. imagine the personal devastation youmust have felt when the wind and rain came. Yet,imagine knowing that there were those whowould come to your aide.

All too often we think in this society that weare all alone, especially during time of difficulty. But the actions of citizens, businesses, membersof the clergy and elected officials during tues-day’s storms demonstrate that we are not allalone, that people do care and that the hand ofGod is still present in our lives.

Yes, there were people who lost everything.Yet, we must never forget that after every stormin our lives we have the opportunity to rebuild,to reach out and touch the lives of others. The Elite News would like to extend its con-

dolences to all of those who were harmed by thestorm. You are a part of our family and we careabout you. we would also like to extend a heartfelt grati-

tude to those who went out into the streets im-mediately after the storm to assist theirneighbors, strangers who they did not know. itall proves that we are indeed family.

Minister of the Week Student of the Week

A very important part of my life was spentas a pitcher in the negro Baseball leagues.i learned some very value lessons about life.i learned the importance of character, com-petition and team participation. i had the op-portunity to travel to different cities, experience various cultures and learn howdifferent people lived their lives.the beginning of baseball season was alwaysone of the most exciting times of my life. iam still excited when i see young men suitus to play “America’s pastime.” Yet, i amvery sad to see that so few African Ameri-cans are playing major league baseball. it isa sport that men such as Jackie Robinson, willie Mays, Frank Robinson, willie Stargelland so many others of colors made a signif-icant part of American culture. those who run the sport of baseball mustmake an extra effort to get young men fromour inner cities involved in baseball. theymust support summer leagues and find talentat very young ages. the talent is there. itmust be developed and encouraged.while once it was illegal for players of colorsto compete with their white counterpartsthose of us who played the game knew thatwhat we were doing was just as important asany game played by the new York Yankeesor the Boston Red Sox.Every time i look at the roosters of our cur-rent major league teams i think of how dis-appointed Black ball players such as SatchelPaige, Josh Gibson and Buck Owens wouldbe. they played their hearts out each day.they played so that they could be recog-nized, and so that younger men of colorwould someday get an opportunity to show-case their skills and share in the financial re-wards that baseball offers it players.no doubt, our prisons are filled with youngmen who have tremendous baseball skills.imagine if these young people were given anopportunity to play baseball rather than makelicense plates in our penal institutions. i like baseball. i am a member of the boardof directors of the negro league Baseballleague Hall of Fame. i like going to the ball-park to see our local team. i would feel betterthough if i were able to go to the game andsee a team that reflects the complexion of oursociety as it is today.

Dear Dr. Hollie, My mother has not spoken one word to me in

the last six months. Six months ago, i eloped inlas Vegas with my then fiancé of two years. itwas just something that we really wanted to do.we thought it would be fun and exciting becauseneither of us had ever been to las Vegas. Also,we were able to turn it into a honeymoon for twoweeks, adding California cities to our travel. wehad a blast. i had already told my Mom thatthat’s what we wanted to do. She really objectedsaying that as her only daughter, she reallywanted to have a big wedding for me. She didn’tlike the idea of our having this type of wedding, and said she would never speak to me again. Buti thought she was just being a little dramatic andthat she’d get over it. At first, i was being stub-born and tried not to care. that only lasted abouta month. She is not returning my phone calls, texts, or emails. i went to her house once and shewouldn’t answer the door. i swear she had myDad too afraid to open it as well. like i said, it’sbeen six months. How do i get this to end?

My Mom Won’t Come Around

Dear My Mom,Keep trying to get an audience with your momwhether in person or by phone, email or text.Mention, to her that while you truly respecther desire for you to have a big wedding thatyou went with what you desired for yourself. It is obvious that your choice was not pleasingand it was not your intent. However, as wetake on a spouse our focus changes fromparental preferences to decisions based onwhat the two of you prefer.

PrayerCloset

Let’ talk about prayer and its purpose. Some-times you may wonder, why we pray andwhat can we accomplish and what can we ac-complish by praying. We know that morethings are wrought by prayer than this world, dreams of. Prayer is the responsibility ofevery Christian. We are to obey God’s wordas He has told us that “man ought to alwayspray and not faint”. Actually, the purpose ofprayer is to determine God’s will in a matter, and then pray it into existence. Prayer is a pri-ority. It was that in Jesus life. He placed itover physical rest, social life and food. Prayerwas the primary communication link betweenJesus and His Father; the same is true for us.Luke 6:12 “And it was at this time that Hewent off to the mountain to pray, and Hespent the whole night in prayer to God”.

Malachi 3:16-1716”then those who feared thelord talked with each other, andthe lord listened and heard. Ascroll of remembrance was writ-ten in his presence concerningthose who feared the lord andhonored his name.17"they willbe mine," says the lordAlmighty, "in the day when imake up my treasured posses-sion. i will spare them, just as incompassion a man spares hisson who serves him.”

By Henry NelsonElite News

Have you ever wondered whatthe lord thinks, when His chil-dren get together to speak abouthim? well it is very special toHim! in fact the word of Godsays the words become His spe-cial treasure. Have you everseen this scripture? Malachi3:16-17 says, “then they thatfeared the lord spake often oneto another: and the lord hear-kened, and heard it, and a bookof remembrance was written be-fore him for them that feared thelord, and that thought upon hisname. 17 And they shall bemine, saith the lord of hosts, inthat day when i make up myjewels.” Amen!

the lord thinks so much ofyour speaking with one anotherand sharing about His ways, that he has a special book where

all our conversations arerecorded. Your conversationswith your brothers and sistersare considered special jewels.the lord loves to hear His chil-dren speaking about Him! AndHis wonderful acts of love.that’s why the enemy is alwaystrying to separate believers, be-cause there is a key in unity. ifhe can keep us apart he won’thave to think about all the treas-ures our words are building.

Unity always brings fellow-ship, and in fellowship we havecommunication, and in commu-nication we create special treas-ure, most precious to the lord.

the fact is, we will never al-ways agree on how some thingsshould be done, but in order tocreate special treasure we mustchoose to put aside our differentways of doing things and focuson the one key element. tospeak ~to share ~ to Shout ~ andto worship Him! For in so doingwe create treasure.

we cannot get into this deepsharing of the heart with one an-other unless we allow unity tohave its way with us. Unity is achoice and we know that ac-cording to Psalm 133 it causesGod to command a blessing.

i found this wonderful mes-sage from one of the Desert Fa-thers written around 400AD.there were two old men whohad dwelt together for manyyears, who never quarreled. Andthat one said to the other let us

pick a quarrel with one another, even as other men do. "Ï knownot how to quarrel said theyounger" to which the olderreplied, "set then this brick inthe middle and say this is mine.to which i will say, no it ismine, from whence quarrelingwill begin." So they placed thebrick in the midst, and one said"this is mine", to which theother said, "if this be so, thentake it and go thy way in peace".So they were unable to quarrel,Sayings of the Desert fathers

we may not always agree withour brother but we can make achoice for unity. when we seeunity we will see the Glory ofGod manifest. the bible says,"the whole earth shall be cov-ered with the knowledge of theglory of God" Man has the ca-pacity for great things throughunity, He also has the capacityfor evil, remember the tower ofBabel? the body of Christ is made up

of many ethnic groups. Manycultures many different soci-economic groups, but if wewant to see the Glory of Godyou must walk in our diversityand accept our differences andbe in unity! On a Motorway near my home

wildflowers have been sown onthe verges and median strips.there is an amazing beauty inthe wildflowers. On their own, they seem like weeds but to-gether they paint a symphony of

color, their unity brings a carpetof glory that one wildflower onits own cannot achieve. thething about wild flowers is thatthey just pop up and seem veryrandom in their individual ap-pearance.

in these last days of Harvestand glory we will see many newbrothers and sisters just pop up!they will be different to you butthey are of you. As you are ofHim! we can choose to see ourbrothers and sisters as Dads kidsor we can walk in disunity andgrumble all day long and won-der why we never see an anoint-ing or the Glory in the house.

God’s real treasures are not tobe found in a bank or in a safetydeposit box or in bricks andmortar. His real treasure is be-side you, your brother or yoursister. we are walking treasuresJewels set apart for Him.

If you would like the entire mes-sage please contact me at:[email protected]

Medicare isa federally funded program that provideshealth insurance to qualified individuals.Anyone over the age of 65 automaticallyqualifies for Medicare benefits, and indi-viduals under 65 with certain disablingconditions qualify as well. in addition, anyone of any age with End-Stage RenalDisease qualifies for this governmenthealth insurance

How can Medicare help you ease into re-tirement? it may assist you with medicalcare, which you may otherwise not beable to afford; please read on to learnmore.

the Hospital Coverage helps you with…• Medicare Part A is the portionthat helps pay for hospital care in additionto hospice, skilled nursing facilities andhome-health-care technicians. the Medical Service Coverage helps youwith…• Medicare Part B is used to covermedical necessities such as outpatientcare, doctors' services and other health-care-related services. Preventative med-ical services also are covered by MedicarePart B, such as prostate exams, mammo-grams and routine physicals.the Medicare Advantage Plan helps youwith… in my opinion, this benefit is un-derutilized due to lack of knowledge• Medicare Part C, also known asMedicare Advantage Plan, is offered byprivate insurance companies that havebeen approved by Medicare. these plansare like traditional health insurance plans, such as an HMO or PPO, and provide

both hospital and medical coverage in oneplan. Part C coverage may also includeservices such as vision, dental, hearing orhealth and wellness coverage for an addi-tional charge. in addition, most MedicarePart C plans also include prescriptiondrug coverage.the Prescription Drug Coverage helpsyou with…• Medicare Part D is the prescrip-tion drug coverage portion of Medicare.Part D is managed by an insurance com-pany or other private Medicare-approvedcompany. Prescription drug coverage isadded to the other Medicare parts to com-plete coverage. if at the time of eligibil-ity--typically 65 years old--an individualdoes not elect to obtain prescription drugcoverage and does not have anothersource of viable coverage, a late fee willbe assessed.it's important to weigh carefully yourMedicare resources and options; there-fore, if you have questions on Medicareor the Medicare Advantage Plans, pleasecontact tim Hamilton at 214-207-7847.Excerpted from a presentation by na-tional Assurance Group llC, an insur-ance Agency of texas.

Friday, April 6 in a predomi-nately black northern tulsa Okla-homa community four black menand one woman are shot. Of thoseshot three have died. those killedwere Dannaer Fields, 49; BobbyClark, 54 and william Allemn, 31.First accounts these shooting all ap-peared to be random isolated inci-dents.

with a community on edge Op-eration Random Shooter, a taskforce which included tulsa police,County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S.Marshal and the FBi quickly iden-tified the shooters. By Sundaynineteen year old Jacob England

and thirty two year old Alvin wattshave been arrested and expected tobe charged with three counts offirst-degree murder, two counts ofshooting with the intent to kill anda single count of possession of afirearm while committing a felony.

As the police continue their in-vestigation England’s Facebookpage seemed to indicate that Eng-land targeted blacks out of revengefor his father’s death. On Eng-land’s Facebook page he indicatedthat out of revenge he targetedblacks. "i'm gone in the head.today is two years that my dad hasbeen gone," England wrote on thepage adding a racial slur to refer toDemond. Also found on his pageEngland posted “i do believe it just

mite be the time to call it quits. …i’m done. if something does hap-pen tonite, be ready for another fu-neral. “

watts frequently posted on Eng-land’s page referring to England as“my bro” and sending him mes-sages in support after his father’sdeath and as reported by the Asso-ciated Press the two were room-mates, sharing a house in turleyOklahoma.

two years ago Carl England, 47,was shot by Pernell Demond Jef-ferson during a fight just a quartermile east of where william Allenwas shot. Jefferson, a black manand a convicted felon was later con-victed of pointing a firearm and isserving a prison sentence through

October 2014. when arrested both were un-

armed and did not resist arrest. it isreported that the gun may havebeen found in the charred whitepick-up truck used in the shootingsand owned by England.

Susan Sevenstar, a family friendof England’s told the AssociatedPress that England was a good kidwho was not in his right mind afterhis father’s death and suicide of hisfiancée last January. together theyhave one child. Sevenstar has de-scribed England as a Cherokee in-dian who did not care about color.

watts brother denies that he is aracist indicating his family is madeup of different races.

Under Oklahoma’s lax hate

crime laws fist convictions onlycarry up to a year in jail. One of thefamilies of those who died wouldrather see the prosecutors focus onseeking the death penalty opposedto adding hate crime to the charges.when asked Deatrah Fields, nieceof Dannaer Fields stated "i thinkthey should go for murder. Asmany people's lives they involvedby what they did in this thing, theyshould go for murder. they can goahead and seek the death penalty, too."

England and watts will be ar-raigned Monday April 16 at 9 a.m.they both are held in the tulsa jailwith their bail set at $9.2 Millioneach.

thomas Pak’s life has been en-gulfed in unbelievable turmoil forthe past year. there are nights whenhe is unable to sleep. there are dayswhen he is afraid for his safety, thesafety of his employees and eventhe safety of his family.

Pak, the owner of a small businesson Martin luther King Blvd. inSouth Dallas would like all of theturmoil to stop. He would like tobefriend those who say that he hasoffended them, and he would like toget on with his life as a merchantwho makes a living treating his cus-tomers fairly and giving them highquality service.

“there are many opportunities inAmerica,” said Pak whose familyattends a Korean Church in Carroll-ton. “in the past some things havegone wrong, but i would like tolook toward the future. i would liketo be a business owner who con-tributes to the life of the communitythat allows my business to prosperand grow, and i would like to be ablessing to the community and its

people.”Pak says that he has learned to lis-

ten to the people in the communityand has grown to understand theimportance of learning the culturesof others. “we are all people,” hesaid. “we may come from differentplaces but we want to support ourfamilies and help others,” said Pakwho grew up in Korea and spenteight years in the texas national

Guard after immigrating to Amer-ica.

“there are many differences be-tween people who come from dif-ferent countries and have differentexperiences,” said william “Bill”Blair, the publisher of the Elitenews. “in the end all of us arehuman being and all of us have anobligation to make our communitybetter.

Blair said that he knew of the issuessurrounding Pak’s business andhoped that the community couldcome together, understand one an-other and move beyond those issuesthat keep people apart.

“i have learned during my fiftyyears in business that different peo-ple have to reach out to one anotherif the entire community is going toprogress,” he said. “we cannot af-

ford to be insular. we have to reachout to all people.”

Pak said that he was sorry for themistakes that have been made in thepast and that he was looking to thefuture.

“i want to help people,” he said.“i want to have a good reputation. ido not want to argue with people. iwant to embrace them.”

it's not hard to imagine a youngteenager waking up on Saturdaymorning planning their day.i would think that most kids wouldwake up and get their phones,com-puters, i -pads, i -pods, or whatever And start making plans to meet atthe mall, go to the game, catch amovie ,or just hang out.it's not hard for me to imagine that, because that's what i sometimesthink young people are preoccupiedwith!

we as adults understand that mostkids are consumed with what theywant to do in life. we as parents tellour kids to slow down and dothings that have meaning! we getconcerned about the amount of timeour kids spend talking on thephone, watching videos on You-tube, or how much time they spendon Facebook and twitter !! i thinkwe as parents are concerned be-cause there are so many meaning-less things that distract our kids.well a group of kids from CedarHill Collegiate Highhool provedme wrong!this past Friday was Good Friday

and schools were out for the Easterholiday.

i woke up, started my morningand ran my morning errands. wheni got back home around mid day i

observed my son on his Facebookpage.

now that's not anything new orstrange, but the comment that fol-lowed did surprise me a little. My son asked if he could go with

some of his classmates to volunteerto help with the clean up in lan-caster!

it turns out that one of his class-mates had sent out an invitation toher classmates at Cedar Hill Colle-giate high school to join her withthe clean up in lancaster. As ithought about it, i was impressedthat theses young people wereusing this social media for some-thing good.

i have always been impressedwith those types of high schoolsthat specialize in certain things.

For example: Booker t washing-ton for the performing Arts, ortownview Magnet, or Business,Art, and Health magnet. But i reallylike Cedar Hill Collegate Highschool. this school allows their stu-dents to take a dual curriculum.these young students actually en-roll at Cedar Valley College, takecollege courses and get a degree allduring their junior and senior yearof high school. it's not just aboutacademics either.

i have been to the Collegiate High

schools Got tal-ent Programwhich was thereannual talentshowcase and iwas impressedwith the ex-tremely talentedstudents.

the talentsranged fromsinging to poetryto guitar playingand of coursethe step show. ialso went to theCollegiate Highschool just be-fore the Christ-mas holidaybreak to see thesong "Joyful, Joy-ful "performed bya group of students, i also attendedthe schools annual picnic, and evenchecked out a Collegiate Highschool flag football competition .needless to say these young peopleare busy!now you would think that thesestudents would be focused on keep-ing up with the many academic as-signments that the teaches assign tothem daily in order for them tokeep up and maintain there gradeshowever on Saturday a group ofyoung kids put all of this aside inorder to assist people that reallyneeded their help!

this group of young people metin lancaster, got their volunteerbadges and went into the neighbor-hood that had been destroyed by thetornadoes this past week.

without complaining these youngpeople loaded shovels, rakes, wheelbarrels, water, boxes, trash bags anda lots of other things onto trucks.

After they loaded the suppliesthese young people went into theneighborhoods and picked up alltypes of trash including bricks, wood, and glass. they also tookadvantage of there time in thisneighborhood and walked aroundasking people how could they help.they smiled and laughed the entiretime they were working.

i have always been impressedwith the students at Cedar Hill Col-legiate High school, but on Satur-day i was really impressed withthese young students willingness togive of their time to help in thecommunity that really needed it!

these young students could havebeen anywhere on that Saturdayevening, but on this day theses stu-dents were not preoccupied withwhat they wanted to do or wherethey had to be. On Saturday theseyoung people were not texting ortwitting, they were making a legiti-mate effort to help. Facebook, haschanged the way we communicate,we can use it for some strangethings but this was one of thosetimes when Facebook was used toget the word out about doing some-thing good for a community thatneeded help, and that help camefrom young people in a majorway!!Thank You Cedar Hill CollegiateHigh School!
