“I’ll never make the mistake of being 70 again.” — Casey Stengel, upon being fired as New York Yankees manager in 1960

As Israel readies itself for its 70th birthday celebration, it’s worthwhile to note how odd it feels to mark what seems like such a relatively small number. After all, when something we care about occupies so much of our mind and energy, it’s hard to imagine life without it. In other words, it feels like the modern state of Israel has been here much longer than 70 years. But perhaps that’s because of the far-reaching impact the nation has had on our lives since its birth. Famed historian Barbara Tuchman noted that of all the people in western civilization, there’s only one that practices the same religion, lives in the same place, and speaks the same language as they did thousands of years ago — and that’s the Jewish people living in Israel. Think for a moment what the state of Israel and its builders have done for the Jews of the world. By transforming Hebrew from an ancient and academic tongue to a modern and vibrant language, Eliezer Ben-Yehudah and his successors brought together Jews across the globe under the umbrella of one common mode of communication, in just about the same way our ancestors spoke in the times of the Bible. By creating houses of learning and prayer that span the spectrum of Jewish observance, Israel has become a spiritual home for Jews around the world. (In fact, many travelers have prayed both at Masada, which includes what is thought to be the oldest synagogue in world history, and a brand-new shul on the very same day.) And by building modern homes of all sizes, Jews now have the opportunity to dwell in the same towns as some of our most ancient ancestors. No other group can boast that kind of connection to their ancient roots. Undoubtedly, Israel can do all of these things better. While the rest of the world often is far too quick to point out Israel’s flaws, it behooves us to acknowledge them as well, if only to motivate ourselves to continue to perfect an already great nation. But now is not the time to focus on the flaws. Now is the time to focus on congratulating Israel on doing what no other country can do: to take a people that spent most of the last 2,000 years searching for a home, searching for an identity, searching for common ground. Israel has made all of these things possible. So I hope you’ll be with us as we raise a toast to an Israel that still looks amazing at age 70. We’re dedicating our April FNL (on Friday, April 20th) to pay tribute to the country’s birthday. And the Jewish community will gather at Addlestone Hebrew Academy on Thursday the 19th at 5:30PM to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day. Celebrate the miracle of Israel, and the miracle of the Jewish nation.

Healing Service

Thursday, April 5th, 5:30PM Jewish healing services support people going through life transitions,

those who may be grieving, people struggling with medical or health issues, or anyone who is interested in adding spirituality and healing into their prayers. Join us for this evening service with songs and readings that encourages healing

together. Light refreshments to follow.

It's hard to believe it has been a year since I took over the Presidency of Synagogue Emanu-El. As most of you know, because of other obligations that I am committed to, I can only serve one (1) year as your President. What can I say about my experience as your President? The same words that I expressed in my first article to you: “Thank You!!” Thank you to the Rabbi, Synagogue staff, Board of Trustees, Officers and the Congregation for making this past year a joyous and wonderful experience. Because of you, the Synagogue is now in a position both financially and spiritually to grow with our community. Again, I want to thank all of you and I look forward to seeing you around the Synagogue in the very near future.

Sisterhood awarded Karen Pinosky as our Women Who Make a Difference in March at a community event held at Emanu-El. We had a wonderful crowd. Mazel Tov to Karen and her family. Sisterhood is looking for volunteer board members; yes, I know a lot of you have been there before! With that said, we need you! Please contact me if you can give a small amount of time monthly. Our social action project continues: please drop a bra off at the container by the social hall door and “Help Save the Girls”. This is an ongoing project Sisterhood started nine months ago, and I am proud to say we have collected over 200 bras. Thank You! Homelessness is an ongoing social issue. Sisterhood Book Club continues to be a popular monthly activity. If you are interested in joining in, please contact Ruth Oser or me for the upcoming schedule. Passover is quickly arriving. I hope each and every one of you have a meaningful Seder. Emanu-El will celebrate its 70th Anniversary and honor Anita Zucker. The date is April 14th, get your tickets now! Contact the office for more information. Wishing all a meaningful Passover. Linda Krawcheck Sisterhood President

That is what many of our Jewish Brothers are experiencing in the

Abayudayan region of Uganda due to the current famine. Our Men’s Club is a partner with the Seaboard

Region of Jewish Men’s Club in helping them. The Abayudayan women hand-knit Kippot that many Men's Clubs are selling for $18 each and 100% of the money goes to support our Jewish

Brothers and Sisters in Uganda. The money helps with food, education, Hadassah School

and maintaining their Jewish Life. Please support our Tikun Olam project
