Instead of burying Smoky Valley and/or Soderstrom t-shirts and sweat-
shirts (those that your child has outgrown) in the bottom of a drawer,
Soderstrom would like to collect these items. You can put them in the
box north of the main entry next to the stairs going up to the sanctuary!
At enrollment in August, the shirts and sweatshirts will be available for
children who might not otherwise have access to Smoky Valley items!
We are excited about this opportunity to serve the children in our
community. Please help support this program, by donating! Thank You!

Please Register Your Attendance The ushers will be bringing in the attendance pads to sign. Please fill in all the spaces so that the office has accurate directory information and for any unspoken prayer requests. Thank you.
Signs of Peace The first Christians welcomed each other to worship with the “kiss of Christ.” Today, we shake hands and announce to each other, “The peace of Christ be with you” or other greeting to remind us that we are one community in faith.
*Call to Worship: Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusa-lem! Look, your king comes to you. (Zechariah 9:9a, NRSV) Ride on, King Jesus, no one can hinder you! Look, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zechariah 9:9b NRSV) Ride on, King Jesus, no one can hinder you! See the crowd coming into the city! Join the glad procession with songs of praise. Ride on, King Jesus, no one can hinder you! We come, lifting our palm branches shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" (Matthew 21:9b, NRSV) Ride on, King Jesus, no one can hinder you! On this holy day, we come with lifted hands, waving palms, and raised voices to proclaim that you are the King of Kings and the Lords of Lords! Continued on insert...

Prayer Lifeline Empty our hearts of all that is worrisome, fearsome, negative or depressing and fill them with the joy of Your presence. It will make all the difference.
Ride on, King Jesus, no one can hinder you!
*Opening Prayer: Today, God, we rejoice with Christians everywhere that there was at least one day when Jesus received the recognition he deserved. We rejoice, knowing that his triumphal entry means that truth cannot remain hidden and that good hearts everywhere recognize truth when it appears. We stand in hope with people on many continents, in many circumstances who are waiting for the day when their truth can be told. We stand with them in faith, knowing that the same God who could have commanded the rocks to shout truth in Jerusalem will not allow truth to be suppressed and good people to be crushed forever. Amen.

give with joyful hearts, knowing that in Christ and his sacrifice our iniquity has been forgiven and our sins forgotten. We can go on from here as a redeemed people, renewed in our commitment to give all we have and all we are for the coming of your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. Taking Up Our Cross: Pastor Patrick Invitation to the Cross: On the red slip of paper inside your bulletin write down what it is that you need Jesus to take to the cross with him this week. (What sin, what behavior, what attitude is blocking you from being the person God intends you to be?) When you have written that down, take it to one of the two crosses near the altar. There you will find nails and a hammer. Use these to nail your red slip onto the cross. If you cannot nail your slip of paper, there will also be band aids available to tape the slips of paper to the crosses.
Closing Song Beneath the Cross of Jesus #297 UMH During the singing of the closing song, the altar is stripped bare. It reminds us of the barrenness Christ felt when the disciples abandoned him in the garden, throughout his trial, through the streets of Jerusalem, and onto Calvary.
Benediction: No benediction or postlude is given on Passion Sunday to remind us of the weight of our ac-tions, behaviors, attitudes, and thoughts have on the events of Holy Week. It’s also a reminder to return next Sunday for the chance to see God’s ultimate glorification in resurrection.
As you leave the sanctuary in silence look at the cross and the sea of red on it to which each of our sins has contributed. We are all responsible for what happened on the cross. Please join us in Fellowship Hall for a potluck lunch!

MINISTRY STRATEGIES FOR A VITAL CONGREGATION
Engaged in making disciples - Vital churches have more small groups for all ages. - Vital churches have more programs for children. - Vital churches have more programs for youth.
Lay Leadership - Vital churches focus on increasing the effectiveness of lay leaders (understand their role and carrying these roles out effectively). - Vital churches have lay leaders who demonstrate a vital personal faith (regular worship, intentional spiritual growth, personal devotional life, and giving of financial resources). - Vital churches place an emphasis on rotating lay leadership in order to involve more people over time. - Vital churches call, equip, use and support more lay leaders than non-‐vital churches. (20% or more of their worship attendees describe themselves as current or past leaders in their church).
Pastor - Vital pastors give attention to developing, coaching, and mentoring lay leadership to enable laity to increase their ability to carry out ministry. - Vital pastors use their influence to increase the participation of others in order to accomplish changes in the church. - Vital pastors motivate the congregation to set and achieve significant goals through effective leadership. - Vital pastors inspire the congregation through preaching. - Vital pastors, when they are serving effectively, stay for a longer period of time. (Short--‐term appointments of effective pastors decrease the vitality of a congregation).
Worship - Vital churches offer a mix of contemporary (newer forms of worship style) and traditional services. - Vital churches have preachers who tend to use more topical sermon series in traditional services. - Vital churches use more contemporary music (less blended music that includes traditional tunes) in contemporary services. - Vital churches use more multi--‐media in contemporary services
Missions - Vital churches are engaged in giving and doing mission - Vital churches are engaged in mission locally and globally
VITAL CONGREGATION GOALS FOR TUMC Vital Congregations engage disciples so that they…
1. Worship 2. Make new disciples (Professions of Faith) 3. Engage in a small group (Bible study groups) 4. Engage in mission
5. Give to missions
SMART Actions for TUMC to achieve these goals: 1. Hire a Christian Education Director by May 1, 2012, without affecting
paying current bills so that we can attract new as well as deepen existing persons as disciples of Jesus Christ.
2. Establish 12 care groups by September 1, 2012, so that we live out our lives as Christ’s example to love one another as he loved us.
3. Revitalize classrooms in original building by refurbishing, organizing, replacing, updating, and adding technology for multi-purpose use by December 31, 2012, with priority given to the blue, green, yellow, and pre-K rooms so that learning is done in a safe, inspiring, and age-appropriate environment.
