Dust Busters

In 1650 The English theologian andhistorian Thomas Fuller was the firstperson to commit a now well knownproverb to print. He wrote that 'thedarkest hour is just before thedawn'.

This proverb is often used toinspire hope under adversecircumstances, and to remind usthat that however dark things feel, day is about to break.

This month the church celebratesthe yearly feast of Easter. Areminder that although it looked verydark on Good Friday, Eastermorning and Jesus's triumph overdeath was just around the corner. The darkness gave way to a brightfuture for the whole world.

So amid the bunnies, themountains of chocolate and theconsequent hyperactive childrenthere is celebration.

Easter is a happy time, but it is

so much more happy when we havein some sense travelled with Jesusthrough Holy Week, to thedesolation and loneliness of thecross, and then onto the joy andrelief of Easter day.

The dawn seems brighter if wehave experienced the darkness first.

So it is with much of life. Thetrials and disappointments we facecan sometimes give our times ofcelebration more meaning.

Easter is just such a time forcelebration. Whatever we have beenthrough over the past year, Easterreminds us that although nightcomes surely day will follow.

Jesus is risen and the churchbelieves that this is the hope for allof us.

With best wishes for a holy andhappy Easter.

Fr Matthew

Not many people know this fact, but I have a number of tattoosupon my personage.

Not the garish sleeve that isso fashionable these days, or thename of my wife to show myundying love to her (or any otherwoman I've had relations with!).

No, all my tattoos are quotes/sayings/mottos and dates thatare relevant to me.

These remind me of peoplethat have left my life, inspirationalwords that keep me sane, andmemorable times I wish to neverforget.

So, why am I telling you this? Well, since I changed my lifestyle and becamea gardener, I've been searching for aquote that encompassed this U-turn, andI've found it!

"Life is like a garden: perfect momentscan be had; but not preserved, except inyour memory". (L.Nimoy)

Now, apart from the joy of knowingI'm going under needle, it got methinking about the memories my garden

which reminds him of his dad - their lifeseems to be extended, because wheneveryour eye falls upon it a memory will surfaceabout that person. A beautiful memory isworth much more than the price ofwhatever you decide to put in your garden.

Your garden can be many things: aplay area for your children, vegetablesfor the plate, an outdoor dining area, awildlife haven or just full of wonderfulcolour and scent.

But there should be a place forpeacefulness and solitude.

It doesn't have to be a huge part, but

a part that takes youaway from the hurlyburly of everyday life, even if it's only in yourmind.

Since I've becamea gardener, I'm nowmuch more patient, and understand thereare influences thataren't in my control thatwill shape my day, week, month or year;and I have to trustthose outsideinfluences.

This is similar to agarden: patience isneeded with plants, and the weather ismost definitely anoutside influence wecan't control!

Now, I don't expectyou to get your owntattoo, but I hope youcan find the time toenjoy your garden.
