Welcome to our Apprenticeship guideBlackburn College is one of the largest and most successful colleges in England with a £65m student village including a University Centre. We are an associate college of Lancaster University who are ranked in the top 10 universities in the UK by The Guardian (2014). We offer an extensive range of over 40 apprenticeships to help meet the needs of both employers and learners.

Our wide range of Apprenticeships are supported in the workplace and one day a week in college by specialist, industry-trained staff and state-of-the-art facilities. Our aim is to inspire learners to achieve their full potential and to make it easy for employers to gain the benefit

of employing young, eager, industry trained staff in the workplace.

Types of Apprenticeships

At Blackburn College we offer four types of Apprenticeship, meaning students can start on a Traineeship and work up to a higher qualification, at an equivalent level to an HNC or Foundation Degree. We offer the following:

• Traineeship Programme (18 weeks) in preparation for a Level 2 Apprenticeship

• Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeships (12-24 months) 5 Good GCSEs

• Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeships (12-18 months) 2 A Levels

• Level 4/5 Higher Level Apprenticeships (18-24 months) HNC/Foundation Degree

Earning and learning at the same time…An Apprenticeship gives you the chance

to do a job, earn some money and carry on learning and gaining nationally recognised qualifications so that you will have a better chance of getting into the career of your dreams or progressing to university. We have partnerships with lots of employers of various sizes, across the North West and always have vacancies waiting with leading companies across many sectors. Check out the Blackburn College website for our most up to date Apprenticeship vacancies.

Whichever kind of career you want to go into you can bet that there will be a related qualification you can do. It makes sense to carry on learning as you will improve your skills and have something to show for it – a nationally recognised certificate such as an NVQ and often a secure job at the end. Even if you thought you had enough learning at school you may be pleasantly surprised. Qualifications like Apprenticeships are designed to assess you in your job and give you the chance to show what you know. Here at Blackburn College we’ve been providing Apprenticeships for over 20 years and get great results that are well above national average. Our Advanced Apprenticeship programme has an 88% success rate, compared to 72% nationally.

Success RatesThe College is currently celebrating a success rate that is 16% better than the national average.

ProgressionYou may have the opportunity when you finish an Apprenticeship to stay on with your employer, or you may want to go to university. Students will find that many institutes of Higher Education will value your skills and knowledge and offer you a place on a foundation degree or other higher level qualification. See page 11 for more information.

Financial SupportApprentices have access to many financial advantages by choosing to study with the College, including a £10 per term travel pass which can be used to get you to work, to College or to go and see your friends. See page 41 for more information.

On the Job ReviewsBlackburn College staff will come and visit you at your place of employment to make sure you have fitted in well at the organisation, see if you have any questions, and also to review your progression with the Apprenticeship.

Support During TrainingBlackburn College and your employer will ensure you have the support that you need. Our job is to ensure the training you receive fits your personal requirements, provides the skills needed whilst supporting the job role you are doing and meeting national standards.

Types of Apprenticeship available:

TraineeshipsTraineeships are courses that will enable students to prepare for work, ensuring that you have the experience and skills that employers are looking for. Students have the opportunity for a high quality work placement in an area of employment that you are interested in working in, alongside having the opportunity to improve your English and Maths skills.

16 - 18 ApprenticeshipsApprenticeships give school leavers an alternative to going on to study A Levels or a vocational subject when they leave school. It gives students the opportunity to earn money, whilst having the chance to gain a nationally recognised qualification at the same time, giving them the chance to gain valuable work experience that employers are looking for.

Adult ApprenticeshipsThink you are too old to study an Apprenticeship? Think again; with our wide range of Adult Apprenticeships available.

Adult Apprenticeships have been designed for those who are 19+, whether you are already in your chosen career and have signed up to an Apprenticeship through your employer or you have been matched with an employer to start a career in your chosen occupation. We have a wide range of Apprenticeships, including Higher Apprenticeships developed by employers for employers to help businesses grow the leaders of the future.

Demi HoughtonTraineeship

Works at Althams Travel

Demi, 17, used the traineeship programme to learn the skills

that employers are looking for, including interview skills and presentation skills, and has now progressed to start

an Apprenticeship at Althams Travel.

“I was looking to get into the travel industry and start an

Apprenticeship, but the timing just wasn’t right, so I decided to

do a Traineeship instead to build my professional skills.

“I love how I’ve fit in so easily and it’s exactly what I thought it was going to be like. I definitely can see myself here for a long

time. “The best thing about Blackburn College was the small class sizes which helped me understand the

classes more, and the support I received when making my

Apprenticeship application and securing my place with Althams

– I am so grateful.”

Olivia AshworthLevel 2 Childcare Apprentice

Works at Oakhill Nursery

Nursery worker Olivia had been offered a chance of some

work experience at Oakhill Nursery and Blackburn College

suggested an Apprenticeship. By April 2013 Olivia had experience of all four nursery areas as well

as the gym and reception.

“The Apprenticeship scheme will really help me get a job as I have more experience than other young people. I go into college one day a week to do assignments which helps me

understand my work more and spend the rest of my time

learning on the job which I love.

“I have an assessor who helps me in the workplace and a

training advisor who helps me with my College work, who are really supportive.” I have both qualifications and experience now which will make me a lot more employable than other

people my age.”

Mohammed BhaiBusiness and Administration

Apprentice

Works at Blackburn with Darwen Council

Mohammed, 24, was looking for work when he spotted a trainee

administrator job at Blackburn with Darwen Council, and has gone from strength to strength since

starting his Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business Administration. The former Blakewater High School

pupil finished his Apprenticeship in style by being awarded an

‘Apprentice of the Year’ award at the college during National

Apprenticeship Week 2014.

“The award came as such a surprise, but it was fantastic to be nominated.

I have loved my experience of studying an Apprenticeship – I have received excellent support

from the council in furthering my studies, whilst being able to come into college one day a week and meet with other administrators

who work in a variety of industries across Pennine Lancashire.”

Sophie AttwaterLevel 5 CIPD Apprentice

in HR Management

Works at Bright Future, Media City

The future looks bright for Apprentice Sophie after starting her Higher Level Apprenticeship in HR Management. Sophie felt a change of career may be right for her, and applied for a job at Bright Future,

a software development company in Media City. Through this role, she had access to start a Level 5

Apprenticeship in HR Management, which she says has made her

realise how valuable studying an Apprenticeship is.

“Blackburn College is doing everything they can to help me

with my Apprenticeship – our class is a small group so we get more time with our tutors, and as the

group come from a diverse range of industries, we can all share our

experience, resources and best practice. All our tutors are very

experienced and CIPD fellows – meaning we get the best possible education from people who have

been in our position.

Mohammad NadatAdvanced Apprentice in Motor

Vehicle Maintenance and Repair

Mohammad, 24, used the skills he learnt during his apprenticeship at

Blackburn College to help him get a job with Land Rover working in Florida, USA. Mohammad speaks very highly about his time at Blackburn College and his tutors, who he still keeps in

regular contact with.

“I decided to take the position at Land Rover and have loved every day since. The car companies all

gave me an interview because I had completed the IMI Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair

in my time at college and had several years work experience because of my

Apprenticeship. If it wasn’t for the excellent facilities and fantastic tutor

support, I wouldn’t have got to where I am today.”

AccountingLevel 2, 3 and 4

If you want a career in Accounting then this Apprenticeship is for you. The Accountancy Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work in the Accounting industry.

By undertaking an Apprenticeship in Accounting you begin the first step to a challenging and rewarding career. To be successful you must be committed and possess good literacy and numeracy skills as well as a logical approach to problem solving, including the ability to recognise the importance of attention to detail.

You will also undertake Functional Skills alongside the Diploma whilst attending College on a day release basis.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 Apprenticeships include:

• Preparing and recording financial documentation

• Maintaining and reconciling the cash book

• Processing business transactions and extracting trial balance

• Preparing financial accounts for partnerships and sole traders

• Cash management• Providing cost and revenue information• Drafting financial statements• Drafting budgets• Measuring financial performance

Business, Retail & Management

Business and Administration Level 2 and 3

Business and Administration Apprenticeships cover many occupations from Office Juniors and Receptionists to Personal Assistants and Supervisors. It involves developing, implementing, maintaining and evaluating various systems that are required for a company to run effectively. If you want a career in this sector, then this Apprenticeship is for you.

You will also undertake Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT alongside the Level 2 and Level 3 Business Administration qualifications.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships include:

• Manage own performance in a business environment

• Improve own performance in a business environment

• Work in a business environment• Communicate in a business environment• Store and retrieve information• Plan and organise meetings• Use office equipment

Customer ServiceLevel 2 and 3

The Customer Service Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work in the customer focused industry. Good customer service is key to the success of any business or organisation. It’s one of those useful skills that is used in all sorts of industries and covers all the extras that make a customer’s experience better.

As a Customer Service Apprentice you will probably work at the front end of an employer’s business activities and regularly assist customers. In most cases you’ll be making sure that customers are dealt with in a positive, reliable and pleasant way.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships include:

• Prepare yourself to deliver good customer service

• Provide customer service within the rules• Recognise and deal with customer

requests, queries and problems• Give customers a positive impression of

Emily GrundyBusiness and Administration

Apprentice

Works at Royal Blackburn Hospital

Emily recently completed her Business and Administration

Apprenticeship at Blackburn College and now sets her sights on starting

university before travelling the world. Emily, who is also involved with the Princes’ trust, has enjoyed working

at the hospital so much that she now wants to progress to a Nursing degree.

“My apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to meet new people, learn

new skills, and earn a living whilst working towards a qualification at the same time. I think an Apprenticeship gives you the right environment to build confidence and gain valuable

work experience.”

Management Level 3 and 5

The Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work in a Management environment. By undertaking an Apprenticeship in Management you begin the first step to a challenging and rewarding career. To be successful you must be committed and possess good literacy and numeracy skills as well as a logical approach to problem solving, including the ability to recognise the importance of attention to detail.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 3 and Level 5 Apprenticeships include:

• Manage personal development• Set objectives and provide support for

Team Leaders• Communicate information and

knowledge• Leading innovation and change• Becoming an effective leader• Managing recruitment

Many students progress from the Level 3 direct to the Level 5 Apprenticeship.

Human Resources Level 5

This Framework has been developed by Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) specifically to develop high performing HR professionals who understand how to use HR practices to meet organisational needs and add value. It will also help employers attract bright individuals who want to develop a career in a business related profession.

Upon completion Apprentices will gain Associate Membership of the CIPD.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 5 Apprenticeships include:

• Developing professional practice in Human Resources

• Understanding the link between individual & organisational performance

• Contributing to coaching and mentoring in the organisation

• Change Management• Resource and Talent Planning• Reward Management

This Apprenticeship can be applied across a broad range of sectors and job roles. Good Managers are essential to the success of any business so the skills gained on this Apprenticeship are transferable and valuable.

Retail Level 2 and 3

Retail covers a host of businesses from independent shops to national chains and large superstores. As an Apprentice your role will depend on your employer – you could be assisting customers on the sales floor of a high street store or handling their purchases. Alternatively, you could be working in a specialist department and become a product expert able to help with specific queries. The Retail Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work in the Retail industry.

What will I study?

Jennifer SmithLevel 5 NVQ Diploma in

Management Apprentice

Works at MITIE PFI Limited

Jennifer’s involvement with the College’s Apprenticeship Scheme has given her the opportunity to

further her skills and knowledge for a career in business management.

Having already completed a Level 3 NVQ in Business and

Administration with the College, Jennifer will be on the College’s

Apprenticeship Scheme for a year further developing her management

skills.

“I manage our PFI Service Desk team, which is responsible for

providing world-class customer service to clients at over a hundred schools/health centres nationwide.

We log, update and co-ordinate all aspects of our self-delivered facilities management package. The Apprenticeship Scheme is a great way to further develop the

skills I need to use every day”.

Clinical Healthcare SupportLevel 2 and 3

The Clinical Healthcare Support Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work in the industry.

This Apprenticeship Framework also provides the skills and knowledge required to become competent in supporting Health Professionals (e.g. doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, healthcare scientists, paramedics) to provide clinical healthcare.

Apprentices are employed as clinical healthcare support workers/healthcare assistants/emergency care assistants and work alongside Health Professionals providing patient care in a range of settings.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships include:

• Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

• Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

• Role of the health and social care worker• Engage in personal development in

health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

• Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

• Promote good practice in handling information in health and social care settings

• Understand the process and experience of Dementia

Care & HealthHealth and Social CareLevel 2 and 3

The Apprenticeship covers a wide range of job roles in the Health and Social Care fields. If you want a career in this sector then this Apprenticeship is for you. The framework offers a combination of qualifications that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work in the Health and Social Care industry.

Social care is about helping people with diverse needs and ages. This type of care takes place anywhere in the community, from people in their own homes to clinics, surgeries, hostels, communal living, hospitals, rest homes and nursing homes.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships include:

• Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

• Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

• Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

• Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care

• The role of the health and social care worker

• Contribute to health and safety in health and social care

• Handle information in health and social care settings

Youth WorkLevel 2 and 3

The Youth Work Apprenticeship offers a combination of qualifications that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work with a variety of young people across the sector.

Workers in this area make sure people are looked after, kept active and happy. They also help individuals to develop social and practical skills. This Apprenticeship will give a fulfilling opportunity to work with young people and vulnerable young adults while also gaining an understanding into the how’s and whys of their circumstances and situations.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships include:

• Understanding Youth Work Principles and Practice

• Safeguarding Young People in a Youth Work Setting

• Youth Work Principles, Knowledge and Skills in Work-Based settings

• Understanding Intervention Strategies in Youth Work settings

• Support young people to develop, implement and review a plan of action

• Provide information and advice to children and young people

• Support young people to move towards independence and manage their lives

• Show enthusiasm for working in the health sector

• Have basic literacy, numeracy and communication skills

• Have a suitable level of physical fitness to perform some aspects of the job roles (e.g. assisting in moving and handling of people).

• Be willing to undergo Disclosure and Barring Service checks (this is needed as apprentices are likely to work with children, young people or vulnerable adults).

• Be flexible as there may be a requirement to work shifts.

Catering & HospitalityThis Apprenticeship covers a range of occupations within Hospitality and Catering, one of the largest industries in the country. To reflect the many career options on offer this Apprenticeship has several pathways, including to be a Receptionist in a 5* hotel or a Manager in a Gastro pub.

Apprentices interested in cookery could either train as a chef in a restaurant or learn how to cook for large scale organisations like the NHS or in schools. You could work in all sorts of kitchens from fine dining to chain restaurants through to gastro pubs. To undertake an Apprenticeship in Hospitality and Catering you must be committed and have the determination and motivation to succeed.

Hayley Kate FletcherHospitality Supervision and Leadership Apprenticeship

Works at Swan and Cemetery, Bury

Hayley is finally starting to flourish in her dream career after completing

a Hospitality Apprenticeship at Blackburn College. Hayley, who has always wanted her own restaurant, now has her own licence and the

skills she needs to make this dream a reality.

“I have loved every minute of the course, and can’t thank the training

assessor enough for helping me every step of the way and supporting

me to fit my coursework in around my full time job. I have decided to progress onto the Hospitality

Supervision and Leadership Apprenticeship now as I believe this

will open more doors for me.”

Cleaners ensure that the places we work in and the public places we use are attractive, safe and hygienic. In Hospitals cleaning staff are at the forefront of controlling the spread of infection, and in many walks of life cleaners ensure a hazard free environment by ensuring it is safe and clean for the general public. This Apprenticeship includes learning about the installation of kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms; this is usually onsite at the customer’s commercial or domestic premises. An Apprenticeship in Fitted Interiors will develop your employability skills and give you valuable experience of a variety of routine activities. You could be working in a construction environment where your duties could encompass many areas of kitchen & bathroom fitting such as installing fitted furniture in the workplace and conforming to all aspects of health and safety law. Your exact duties will depend upon your employer.

Showing enthusiasm, good communication skills, providing proof of a mature attitude and problem solving skills will all help an Apprenticeship application and an Apprentice’s successful completion of the framework in this industry. The Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership is designed for those individuals who wish to gain a broad, but solid foundation to allow them to follow a career in the outdoor sector or in the active leisure sector as fitness leaders, coaches and activity leaders.In the outdoors, roles will tend to be working with straight-forward groups in less hazardous activities, often in controlled environments.

In active leisure, roles covered by this framework tend to be more of a community focus, and apprentices tend to be employed in community settings as activity leaders, sports coaches and fitness leaders.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 2 Apprenticeships include:

Fitness and ExerciseLevel 2 and 3

This Apprenticeship covers a range of occupations within Leisure & Learning Activities, one of the largest industries in the country. If you are interested in a career in working in ‘Fitness ‘ you could train as a Gym Instructor or Personal Trainer learning how to improve clients wellbeing and learning customer service skills.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships include:

• Anatomy and physiology for exercise• Principles of exercise, fitness and health• Promote health, safety and welfare in

active leisure recreation

Leisure Operations and ManagementLevel 2 and 3

The Apprenticeship in Leisure Operations and Management is designed for those individuals who are looking to develop their knowledge and skills in order to progress their careers in this sector. It’s specifically aimed at individuals who wish to work in operational roles in the active leisure and learning sector, including sport and leisure centres and holiday clubs.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships include:

• Support the work of the team and organisation

• Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation

• Set up, take down and store activity equipment

• Promoting customer care in active leisure• Understanding how to lead a team in

active leisure

Personal Training Level 3

The Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Personal Training is designed for those who already work in the health and fitness industry and wish to gain new knowledge and skills to continue their professional development as well as for those who wish to enter the sector in a supervisory / managerial role. The framework is also suitable for those wishing to change career after having worked in a different sector, entering this sector changing their hobby into a job.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 3 Apprenticeships include:

• Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity

• Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health

• Delivering personal training sessions

Supporting Learning in PE and School Sport Level 3

This Apprenticeship has been developed to support the achievement of the Government’sSchool Sport Policy and lasting legacy of the 2012 Games, providing learners to deliver/support the delivery of low risk activities that contribute to a physical education and school sport programme through curriculum based and/or extra-curricular activities (including holidays).

This programme prepares learners for employment in a school sport setting through providing an introduction to opportunities for them to work as a physical education and school sport professional e.g. as a higher level teaching assistant (HLTA), teaching assistant (TA), sports coach, sports development officer, sports volunteer or sports leader.

What will I study?

Selection of units from Level 3 Apprenticeships include:

• Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults

• Understand child and young person development

• Support assessment for learning • Organise and lead a sport event or

competition

Tom PennyCoaching Apprentice

Works with Lancashire Football Association

Tom delivers sessions in schools to community groups as well as running a development squad for the elite players in the area.
