ABOUT KING’S King's College London offers an intellectually stimulating environment in which to work, where staff are dedicated to the

advancement of knowledge and learning, in the service of society. We are a multi-faculty institution, providing high-quality

education, research and innovation across the sciences, humanities, medicine, law, dentistry, and social sciences. As a

member of the Russell Group, an association of leading UK research-intensive universities, we are committed to maintaining

the highest standards in research and education. King's is the largest centre for the education of healthcare professionals in

Europe and is home to five Medical Research Council Centres spread across its three teaching hospitals.

King's is one of the top 10 UK universities in the world (QS World University Rankings 2019) and the fourth oldest university

in England, based in the heart of London. King's has over 31,000 students (including more than 12,800 postgraduates) from

some 150 countries, and over 8,500 employees.

The UK higher education funding bodies allocate about £2 billion per year of research funding to UK universities, based on

the quality and volume of each university’s research. As well as informing funding allocations, the REF provides accountability

for public investment in research, demonstrates its benefits, and provides important reputational yardsticks and

King’s Health Partners

Our Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC), King’s Health Partners (KHP) brings together one of the world’s top

research- led universities and three of England’s largest NHS Foundation Trusts, Guy’s and St. Thomas’, King’s College

Hospital and South London and Maudsley.

KHP has a combined turnover of £3.7 billion, around 4.3 million patient contacts per year, 43,000 NHS and university staff

and 31,000 students. KHP has a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality clinical services and leads two of the National

Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs). This along with world-leading mental health

research, highly competitive nursing, dental, imaging, biomedical engineering and genomics academic programmes makes

it significant contributor on the world stage.

The successful reaccreditation of KHP in 2013 prompted a new strategic plan for the period 2014-2019 which was

validated in 2016 through the successful renewal of our BRC. The positioning of mental health at the heart of our

partnership provides a strong differentiation from other AHSCs, particularly our work in integrating mental and physical

healthcare through our Mind and Body initiative, a programme of national standing enabling the screening, diagnosis and

treatment of the whole person. The partnership’s 22 Clinical Academic Groups (CAGs) are focused on delivering

translational research and implementing value-based healthcare to ensure the best outcomes and experience within

available resources for patients. The CAGs work is evidenced through the production of Outcomes Books to demonstrate

value and impact across the tripartite mission of excellence in clinical care, research and education.

The next phase of development for KHP articulated in the strategic framework for the period 2019 – 2024 focuses on four

key areas; Novel Technologies, Therapeutics & Diagnostics, System Wide Quality improvement & Outcomes, Urban

Population Health, and Workforce Innovation & Sustainability. This new strategy reflects our ambitions health system

leadership and improving population health which are important to our local partners and community.

Hill and Guy’s Campus, the IoPPN has the unique advantage of being closely located to the world famous Maudsley Hospital,

now part of the South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust, and King’s College Hospital NHS Trust. This

successfully facilitates the seamless movement of researchers and clinicians between these institutions and ensures high

quality translational research, new understanding of the nervous system and novel approaches to treatment. The

partnerships the IoPPN has with NHS trusts, charities, industry, and national and international academics allows us to apply

cross-disciplinary perspectives to prevention, treatment and novel research approaches. Working across the lifespan, as well

as the mental and physical health interface, we influence policy, practice and public understanding of mental health and

neuroscience.

Together, with our NHS partners and with colleagues in King’s we have been responsible for many ground-breaking

evidence-based developments in mental health and neuroscience, from basic science across the full translational range of

activities. Breakthroughs include the contributions by Rosalind Franklin, Ray Gosling and Maurice Wilkins to understanding

the structure of DNA; the treatment of shell shock; the Maudsley model for treating eating disorders; medication for

migraines; CBT for psychosis; the role of nicotine in addiction; stem cell therapy to repair stroke damage, and many more.

The academic ambition of the IoPPN is to continue to make ground-breaking advances in our understanding of the

mechanisms underlying mental ill health, and in its prevention and treatment. As the premier mental health and neuroscience

related institute, we share a commitment to multidisciplinary research that incorporates neurological and neurosurgical

problems and research in basic neuroscience, alongside the clinical, pharmacological and epidemiological underpinnings for

mental health. The interdisciplinary nature of our research continues to help shape the direction of the IoPPN; the Centre for

Translational Informatics (CTI) has brought together a diverse range of experts to collaborate across different disciplines to

develop digital solutions for the improvement of healthcare delivery and quality to patients. Biomedical engineering has

assisted in new developments for neurosurgery with implications for our Health Partners. The newly established ESRC Centre

for Society & Mental Health will also allow for closer collaboration between the IoPPN and the Faculty of Social Science &

Public Policy at KCL.

Our notable impact over the past 100 years was honoured when Her Majesty the Queen awarded King’s the country’s first

Regius Chair in Psychiatry in 2013, as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Our psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience courses offer training in a variety of specialist fields that have clear applications

in mental health care and neuroscience (including careers in clinical, forensic or health psychology, clinical neuropsychiatry,

neurology, neuroimaging, therapy, addictions, mental health nursing, and NHS service management). Our teaching activities

have expanded from around 100 full-time-equivalent students to over 1,000 over the last two decades. We launched our

first full undergraduate programme in psychology three years ago, which has been heavily oversubscribed. We currently

offer 5 undergraduate courses and 26 postgraduate courses.

FACULTY OF DENTISTRY, ORAL AND CRANIOFACIAL SCIENCES

cutting edge basic, clinical and translational research, the Dental Institute provides both routine and specialist clinical care

and educates and trains dental personnel at all levels, including dental care professionals.

The Dental Institute’s overarching aim is to maximise impact on health and wellbeing by integrating excellence across four

areas: world-class science, clinical approaches, patient care and education, to provide scientifically informed solutions to

clinical problems. To achieve this goal, basic scientists are juxtaposed to clinicians, physicists and tissue engineers focusing

on diseases of world-wide importance, while health practitioners, social and behavioural scientists provide translation of

science into practice and policy.

The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences is formed of 3 research Centres: Craniofacial and Regenerative Biology;

Host-Microbiome Interactions and Oral, Clinical & Translational Sciences. In addition, there is a well-supported Oral Clinical

Research Unit (OCRU) for conducting clinical research projects, which are typically commercially or research grant funded.

These groups sit alongside, and have key interactions with, the faculty’s Centre for Dental Education. This structure is

designed to achieve our overall vision to be the world’s leading centre for oral, dental and craniofacial education, research

and clinical care.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE FACULTY OF NURSING, MIDWIFERY & PALLIATIVE CARE The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care has its origins in the world’s first professional nurse

training school, established by Florence Nightingale at St Thomas’ Hospital in 1860. It is ranked first in the UK and second

in the world for Nursing in the QS World Rankings and first in the UK and third in the world for Nursing in the Shanghai

Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. In 2017, the Faculty joined with the Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy

& Rehabilitation, the first purpose built palliative care institute in the world. The Institute is a partnership of Cicely Saunders

International, King’s College London and associated local clinical services to bring together clinical and academic teams to

innovate, discover, evaluate and translate solutions to improve care, symptom control and quality of life for patients and

families affected by serious and progressive illnesses.

The Faculty has approximately 200 staff and 3,000 students. The four Nursing & Midwifery departments are based at the

Waterloo campus. They comprise: Adult Nursing, Child and Family Health, Mental Health Nursing and Midwifery. The Cicely

Saunders Institute (CSI) is based in purpose based premises at the Denmark Hill campus.

Staff and students work in partnership with London teaching hospitals, community services and independent service

providers which provide placements for our pre-registration nursing and midwifery students. Our education portfolio also

provides workforce development opportunities for healthcare staff in London and beyond. Among our partners are three

NHS Foundation Trusts (Guys & St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London & Maudsley) which together with

King’s comprise King’s Health Partners, an academic health science centre. Palliative Care is one of the 22 Clinical Academic

Groups in King’s Health Partners uniting research with education and front line clinical services.

The Faculty uses its research and teaching to improve the quality of care and outcomes for patients, and to improve the

healthcare experience and outcomes for patients and those important to them, wherever they are cared for. This includes

research to evaluate and improve care, care experiences, and symptom management, measure outcomes, and influence the

wider social and policy context of care, locally, nationally and globally. Research programmes win external peer review

funding from major bodies, including the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR, the UK government) a research body

equivalent for applied health and clinical research, equivalent in standing to the Research Councils.
