Organisation

Dr. Samuel Jubé (PhD. in Law, University of Nantes) is the Director of the IAS-Nantes. Professor Alain Supiot (Collège de France) founded the institute in 2008 and directed it until 2013. He now chairs its Strategic com-mittee and remains a Permanent fellow. Professors Su-dhir Chandra, Danouta Liberski and Ibrahima Thioub are also engaged in the IAS-Nantes on a long-term basis as Associate-fellows.

The administrative governing body is an independent Board of trustees chaired by the major of the City of Nantes (Mr. Patrick Rimbert). The selection of the fellows is submitted to an international scientific advisory board chaired by prof. Jean-Noël Robert (Collège de France).

Funding

The IAS-Nantes is funded by the City of Nantes, the Region Pays de la Loire, the University of Nantes, the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research through the RFIEA foundation (French Network of IAS), the French Ministry of Labor, the National Research Agency - ANR - (through the Excellence laboratories funding program), the European commission (through the COFUND program Eurias), the International Labor Organisation, Veolia Water and Suez environment. The IAS-Nantes is also the coordinator of the Indian-European advanced research network (IEARN) funded by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond.

Created in 2008, the Nantes Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is a State-approved public benefit foundation. Although it stands as an entirely independent organization, the IAS-Nantes is a founding member of the French Network of IAS and collaborates with a large number of academic institutions in France and abroad.

Building on a renowned international tradition

The IAS-Nantes drew inspiration from the model of worldwide renowned IASs such as Princeton, created in 1930, and Berlin in 1980. Its research activity relies on a community of about 25 scholars invited for one academic year following a stringent selection process. Coming mainly from the humanities and social sciences (but not exclusively), these scholars first apply to join the IAS-Nantes on the basis of their own research project and then benefit from complete freedom once at the institute. Rather than pressing for immediate outputs, the IAS-Nantes seeks to provide the time and space necessary to pursue highly ambitious projects and to foster cross-pollination.

High quality working conditions are provided to the fellows, as well as services such as library assistance, administrative and IT support. Apartments are also pro-posed by the IAS services for the duration of the fellowship and make it possible for the fellows to be accompanied by family members.

Going beyond western approaches

Since the researcher is never wholly separable from his/her object when dealing with human beings and societies, comparative study and confrontation to the other’s vision of our own culture and modes of thought are an indispensable ingredient of what can be considered objectivity in the humanities and social sciences. Whereas the globalisation clearly challenges approaches solely based on Western paradigms, it also provides a unique opportunity to improve our capacity for self-reflexivity through an opening to other ways of questioning.

The IAS-Nantes thus aims to welcome a large number of “Southern” intellectuals and to promote genuinely diverse approaches to problems. The composition of each year-group follows a specific pattern, seeking to gather together scholars with not only widely differing intellec-tual and cultural baggage but also some interests in issues which somewhat overlap or connect

A better understanding of the institutional frameworks

Human societies are arguably not sustainable without a certain number of founding beliefs. These cannot be demonstrated experimentally, but they nonetheless ground modes of being and acting. Instead of looking at them as remnants of irrationality in a fully transparent and programmable world, one could consider them as a vital substrate for the institution of reason. A better understanding of these “dogmatic systems” requires crossing detailed technical analysis and large erudition. For this reason, the IAS-Nantes shows specific interest to those who may share this endeavour, whether they look at it through the field of law, religious studies, linguistics, aesthetics, literature, philosophy, history, anthropology, economics, management, medicine, or else.
