Deadlines

Applying early is encouraged. Applications and all supporting materials (including essays, transcripts, and letters of reference) must be submitted to the Hampton University Pre-Health Coordinator by January 29, 2016 (during the sophomore year). Applications must be complete by the close of business on this date to be considered by the selection committee. There are no exceptions to this deadline. It is imperative that all application materials are received by the stated deadline.

Selection

An initial review of all applications will be conducted by Hampton University faculty. All qualified applicants will be invited to participate in individual interviews held on Hampton University's campus during the month of February. Applicants must participate in order to be considered by the committee. Applicants will be notified of their interview status by early February. The purpose of the interview is to develop a sense of the candidate’s personality and oral communication skills and convey these qualities to the committee. Hampton University faculty and interviewers will help inform the selection committee; however, the final decisions are made by the selection committee.

The Guaranteed Admissions Program Selection Committee will conduct a holistic review of all qualified applicants and select two primary nominees and additional alternate nominees.

It is important to note that selection is not made on the basis of academic performance alone. In addition to academic qualifications, the same noncognitive qualities taken into consideration for the Guaranteed Admissions Program as are used in regular medical school acceptance. These include, but are not limited to: personality, character, maturity, professionalism, empathy, and interpersonal skills.

This agreement is with Hampton University and students may not petition the VTCSOM in the event they fail to adhere to the program requirements.

Curriculum

The first summer of the program will primarily emphasize research with a sampling of clinical experiences through Carilion Clinic and MCAT preparation. This will include spending 10 weeks participating in the Virginia Tech Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program (MAOP), working with a Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute (VTCRI) faculty member in a mentor/protégé relationship to design, conduct, and present research. Participants will interact with other undergraduate and graduate student researchers in different areas of study, use state-of-the-art equipment, and attend seminars pertaining to research and graduate school. During this time, participants will devote approximately 40 hours a week to research and other scholarly activities and participate in an exploratory retreat. At the end of the first summer, the interns will present an abstract, poster presentation, and oral presentation to peers, mentors, and the university community.

The second summer of the program will primarily emphasize clinical skills with an integrated research component and MCAT preparation. Participants will also be provided assistance with preparing their AMCAS application. Participants will interact with VTCSOM faculty, staff, and students and participate in activities held at the medical school and in the surrounding local community. During this summer, participants will be expected to begin their AMCAS application, take the MCAT, and prepare for VTCSOM's MMI interviews during the fall semester2of their senior year.
