The School of Nursing is an integral unit of Hampton University and shares its goals and

ideals of excellence in the teaching-living-learning process. Nursing education at Hampton

University began with the Hampton Training School for Nurses in 1891. At the turn of the

century, Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute and Dixie Hospital (now Sentara

CarePlex) partnered to offer premier nursing education and health care for Peninsula

residents. Since 1944, the nursing faculty at Hampton University has provided high-quality

professional nursing education at the bachelor of science degree level. This undergraduate

program has the distinction of being the oldest baccalaureate nursing program in the

Commonwealth. In 1976, Hampton University instituted a master of science degree program

in nursing, making Hampton the first historically black college and university (HBCU) to

offer a master’s degree in nursing. In 1999, the School of Nursing achieved another

distinction when Hampton University instituted a PhD nursing program, the first at a HBCU.

The Center for Minority Family Health serves as the research arm of the School of Nursing.

The School of Nursing is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing and is fully accredited

by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the Commission on

Collegiate Nursing Education.

School of Nursing HAMPTON UNIVERSITY

Each new graduate is eligible to receive the Hampton University School of Nursing pin, which symbolizes the transition from student to nurse.

The School of Nursing’s pin is a representation of the middle

of the Hampton University seal. The official seal was

accepted in 1875 and only the name has changed as Hampton

has evolved from the Hampton Normal and Agricultural

Institute to Hampton Institute to Hampton University.

The symbols on the seal and the pin are a plow and sheaths of

grain; books of knowledge surmounted by a globe of the

world; a Bible stand; and, an old-fashioned printing press.

The sunrise over Hampton Creek symbolizes the rise of

educational opportunities, and the boat on the water

symbolizes the principal medium of transportation to

Hampton during its early history.

On behalf of the Hampton University administration, faculty, and staff, I want to extend my most heartfelt congratulations to you, your family, and friends. This Pinning Ceremony cele-

brates your hard work and achievement in completing a de-manding and rigorous course of study. You should be proud, as should all who supported and assisted you in your efforts.

Pinning is a day of celebration, and it also is a day of reflec-tion about what lies ahead. Whatever path you choose, I am confident you have acquired the skills you need to be success-ful. Whether you pursue a career in public service, private industry, or academe, I know you will make a difference.

It has been a privilege and a pleasure to host you during your

academic career. You have learned much, and the School of Nursing, in turn, has benefited from your presence. I hope you will recall your years here as being both happy and pro-

ductive. As members of the distinguished School of Nursing alumni, you will always be cherished here at Hampton University. I hope you will proudly wear your pin that identifies you as one who has been educated to

serve the health needs of society. Know that this symbol of service involves many profes-sional rights and responsibilities. We have equipped you with the tools necessary for suc-cess as we send you out into the world to be part of the next wave of public health re-searchers, educators, practitioners, advocates, and leaders. I am proud of the ingenuity

and hard work that went into each and every one of your degrees, and I look forward to hearing about your accomplishments in the years to come. In closing, there is nothing more rewarding for us than to periodically reconnect with you,

so please do stay in touch. Thank you, and once again, congratulations on the completion of your undergraduate nursing education. Sincerely,

Phyllis D. Morgan graduated with a PhD in nursing from Hampton Uni-

versity in May 2002 and became the first student to receive a PhD in

nursing from a Historically Black College and/or University. Dr. Morgan

also received her master’s of science in nursing from Hampton Univer-

sity and a bachelor’s of science in nursing from Florida State University.

Dr. Morgan completed a post-doctoral fellowship in health disparities

research at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.

Dr. Morgan has been a core faculty member at Walden University

School of Nursing since May 2010, where she serves as a lead faculty

member, course developer, and faculty mentor for the nursing program.

Dr. Morgan was former chair and associate professor at the Fayetteville

State University Department of Nursing (FSU-DON). Under her leader-

ship, NCLEX-RN board scores increased from 39% to 88%.

Dr. Morgan is certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Cen-

ter and American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as a family nurse practitioner (FNP). Since 1998, she has

practiced as a nurse practitioner in clinical areas, such as college health, women’s health, indigent care, pri-

mary care, and military health care. Currently, Dr. Morgan practices part-time as a FNP for CVS Caremark

Minute Clinic stores in Northern Virginia.

For the past several years, Dr. Morgan has worked as a nurse educator, researcher, and clinician. She has

been published in several peer-reviewed journals and presented at national conferences. Dr. Morgan serves as

a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) and member of the American Academy

of Nurse Practitioners, Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society,

and Chi Eta Phi.

Dr. Morgan’s areas of research are African American women’s breast cancer treatment, African American

couples coping with breast cancer, and African Americans and colorectal cancer. She has served as a disserta-

tion committee member for three African American female PhD students whose research focused on African

Americans and colorectal cancer, college-age women and cervical cancer, and African Americans with HIV/

AIDS.

Dr. Morgan is passionate about helping others and working to improve health disparities among vulnerable

and underserved populations. Her latest research resulted in a $250,000 grant awarded by the Centers for

Medicare & Medicaid Services to implement a faith-based culturally appropriate colorectal cancer educa-

tional intervention for African Americans. This project increased colorectal cancer knowledge, decreased

cancer fatalism, and increased screening for colorectal cancer among African Americans in the southeastern

United States.

Dr. Morgan is an active member of the First Mount Zion Baptist Church Health Ministry in Dumfries, Vir-

ginia. She is a first aid volunteer for the Brownie Girl Scout Troop at Christ Chapel Academy in Woodbridge,

Virginia, and a health ministry volunteer for God’s Ladies of Significance and Service (G.L.O.S.S.), Wood-

bridge chapter. Dr. Morgan is married to Colonel Conrado B. Morgan, United States Army, and is the proud

mother of seven-year-old Cayla. She is a woman of faith and trusts God in every aspect of her life.

Mrs. Mary E. Bradley-Laster, a native of Galax, VA, began her nurs-

ing career as a diploma graduate. She received her diploma in nurs-

ing from The Helene Fuld School of Nursing, Provident Hospital, in

Baltimore, MD, in 1969; a BS from Tuskegee University, Tuskegee,

ham, AL, in 1979. Mrs. Laster has completed advanced studies at

Old Dominion University and Nova Southeastern University.

She has devoted over 43 years to nursing service. With her first

nursing job at Provident Hospital, she served as a staff and charge

nurse in obstetrics and gynecology, where she developed a strong

work ethic. Since her initial employment in the clinical arena, she

has held the position of staff nurse, charge nurse, and public health

nurse. In 1979, Mrs. Laster began her teaching career in higher edu-

cation as an instructor at Tuskegee University School of Nursing and

obtained tenure and the rank of Assistant Professor. She ascended to the position of the Assistant Dean

of Academic Services before leaving Tuskegee University. In 1988, Mrs. Laster continued her career

in academia and became an Assistant Professor at Hampton University. During her 24 years of service

Hospital School of Professional Nursing with a diploma in nursing; Old Dominion University with a

bachelor’s of science in nursing and master’s of science in nursing; and the College of William and

Mary with a doctorate in education. She practiced as a professional nurse in the burn injury and respira-

tory intensive care settings at Norfolk General Hospital. Throughout her career, she has taught in di-

ploma, associate, and baccalaureate nursing programs offered through the Norfolk General Hospital

School of Professional Nursing, Norfolk State University, and Christopher Newport University. She

currently serves as a faculty member with the accelerated program at the College of Virginia Beach.

Dr. Saunders wishes Godspeed to her colleagues and past and present Hampton University School of

Nursing students and states, ―May life continue to be a blessed adventure for all of us.‖

Dinah Saunders, EdD, RN, BC

12

Dr. Barbara Wright began her career in nursing in 1966 when she

completed the LPN program at Dixie Hospital School of Practical

Nursing. In 1971, she decided to enroll at Thomas Nelson Commu-

nity College. She graduated in 1973 with an ASN and continued her

employment at Hampton General Hospital in the operating room as a

staff nurse. In 1974, Dr. Wright began working at the Veterans Ad-

ministration Medical Center as a staff nurse in the operating room.

The Veterans Administration encouraged nurses to pursue advanced

education in order to meet the standards for promotion, and Dr.

Wright completed both the BS (1979) and MS (1989) from Hampton

Institute/University while raising three children and working full

time. Positions held by Dr. Wright at the Veterans Administration

included staff nurse, nurse manager of the surgical unit, supervisor in

the operating room, and associate chief nurse.

Her teaching career began in 1991 at Troy State University in Montgomery, Alabama, and Troy, Ala-

bama, as adjunct faculty while working at the Veterans Administration in Montgomery, Alabama. After

retiring from the Veterans Administration, she returned to Virginia and began working at Hampton Uni-

versity, where she remained employed for 12 years. It was during her employment at Hampton Univer-

sity that she completed the requirements for the Doctor of Education degree. Shortly afterward, she ac-

cepted a position at Norfolk State University in the Department of Nursing with a teaching assignment

in the RN to BS Program. In 2010, she returned to Hampton University as Chair of the Department of

Undergraduate Nursing Education. Dr. Wright’s greatest joy has been influencing the many young stu-

dent nurses she has mentored throughout her professional career.

She served 16 years in the U.S. Army Reserves where she was a member of three Reserve units. Dr.

Wright retired from the Army at the rank of Major with an Honorable Discharge. Her primary roles in

the Reserves were NBC officer and head nurse in the operating room. She has received several honors

and awards, including Special Advancement for Performance from the Department of Veteran Affairs,

Hampton, Virginia; Special Advancement for Achievement, ANA Certification Nursing Administration

from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Montgomery, Alabama; Glowing Lamp, Chi Eta Phi, Eta

Chapter; and Appreciation and Mentorship Awards, Virginia Nurses Association.

Dr. Wright is an active member of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Tau Chapter, where she serves as the former

Dean of Pledges. She has also served two terms as Tamiochus. Memberships in other professional or-

ganizations include the Delta Iota Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing

(President), Phi Gama Sigma Honor Society, National League of Nursing, and Virginia Nurses Associa-

tion (President and Chair of the Council of District). In addition, Dr. Wright is an active member of

Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple, where she proudly serves as an usher at the 7:00 a.m. service and

member of the Healthcare Ministry.

Dr. Wright is an avid sports fan and enjoys traveling with the HU boosters and watching the Marching

Force, Spartan Legion, and other HBCU bands. She is the daughter of Mrs. Celestine Anthony and the

late Thaddeus Anthony. Dr. Wright has three sisters and a brother, Shelia, Gloria, Sandra, and Prett.

She is the proud mother of three, Stephanie, Sharon, and Anthony, and has seven grandchildren and four
