Jennifer Hale (Theatre Arts 1982) isa very successful voice over actressndash in fact in 2013 the Guinness Bookof World Records recognized her asthe most prolific videogame voiceactor (female)rdquo On a recent visit toBirmingham Jennifer spent sometime talking with current ASFATheatre Arts students about how tosupport themselves as artists andhow to make smart financialdecisions that can help them achievetheir goals in a competitive industry

In a presentation she told studentsldquoItrsquos okay as an artist to care aboutmoney Its important as an artist tocare about money You dont have tocreate from a place of sufferingrdquo

She advised students to save half ofeverything they make as an actor bewilling to live below their means andto work toward creating residualincome streams to free themselvesto do creative work

She also encouraged them to bepatient but work consistently towardtheir goals ldquoIf I could leave you withone super power it would bedelayed gratification These thingsdont happen overnightrdquo Jennifersaid ldquoImagine your five-year plan andshow up every day Every day take afew minutes in the morning and a fewminutes at night to put into words whatyou are doing toward your plan Makethose words positive and presenttenserdquo

Jennifer also answered questions fromstudents and shared insights from herown career which also includestelevision and film When asked howshe prepares for a voice over auditionshe said ldquoIt begins with the stuff you

learn here at ASFA Whats my place inthe story What do I want What part ofmy voice am I going to use Read thescript at least five timesrdquo She alsostressed the importance of being on timeand working hard ldquoWork ethic is moreimportant than talent Dont be entitledand dont disrespect what you haveby expecting something elserdquo

One student asked what to do at theend of an audition Jennifer suggested thatthey transform the walk of shame (theawkward moment after an audition when

an actor finishes and then has to turn andwalk out of the audition space) by makingthe audition more about giving and lessabout getting approval That can keepthe actor feeling positive and confidentabout the process ldquoThe audition is thejobrdquo she reminded them

To cope with the discouragement thatcan go along with being an actor lookingfor work she recommended giving aswell ldquoGo help at a homeless sheltervolunteer When you feel depressedand discouraged help someone elserdquo
