He learned the trade of brewing and malting under the instruction of his uncle in Northern England before immigrating to Canada in 1817. Upon being elected in 1843, Alexander Keith served three terms as mayor of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in additionof being a member of the Legislative Council for 30 years.
