1. This award has not been traced in The London Gazette. The citation reads “For conspicuous gallantry on the 23rd September 1918, during an attack. After the forcing of the entrance to a town, in which his troops took part, he was sent to capture guns firing from a higher position. After putting two field guns out of action he pursued large numbers of the enemy. Although only in command of a troop he captured 12 Turkish officers and 193 other ranks, besides the Turkish Military Headquarters, on which he left a guard.” It should be noted the no-one could be appointed directly to IOM 1st Class. The first act of gallantry was always recognised with an award of the 2nd Class. Subsequent acts of gallantry could earn elevation to IOM 1st Class. Unless specifically identified as a 1st Class award, therefore, all references to IOM in this appendix should be taken as referring to 2nd Class awards.

2. It should be noted that no-one could be appointed directly to OBI 1st Class. All such appointees were promoted from OBI 2nd Class.3. “For the display of conspicuous ability and a noble sense of duty. This officer has been a fine example of courage and loyalty to all ranks.

It is difficult to speak too highly of his invaluable services.” [Smuts]4. “For most conspicuous services throughout the campaign when he has on many occasions shown great gallantry. At Ngurangani on

10 January 1916 when the unit under his command was heavily enfiladed, he showed an absolute contempt for danger. His personal example so inspired his men that they advanced under the heaviest fire. His services are worthy of recognition.”

5. “For conspicuous gallantry in action on 9th October 1916 [the action at Kissangire]. He proceeded forward under a hot fire along a communication trench and removed a number of bodies which were impeding the advance.” He died of his wounds on 14 October 1916 (CWGC archive).

6. “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 17th October 1917. This officer stayed with and encouraged his men under the hottest fire for many hours at a critical period during the battle. Undoubtedly his courage contributed largely to the stand made by the men after severe casualties had been sustained.”

7. “For consistent good work as Adjutant of the Regiment, in which capacity he has shown both high zeal and professional capacity, while he has also rendered on more than one occasion distinguished service on patrol work.” (Smuts)

8. “This officer has been in sole medical charge of the Bharatpur Imperial Service Infantry Regiment for over 18 months and has rendered invaluable service. It is due to his zeal and ability that the health of the unit, after two years’ active service, has been so consistently good. He is untiring in his duties particularly in regard to sanitation. He has on many occasions held temporary medical charge of the details of South African units. The work of this old soldier, who previous to this campaign has seen active service in Burma, Tirah and Tibet, is worthy of special recognition.”

12. MC gazetted as Indian Land Forces attd. Mysore Lancers. History of 15th Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade refers to him as Captain and Commandant of Bhavnagar Lancers. (Two troops of Bhavnagar Lancers were attached to Mysore Lancers for the War). G of I 946, 29.11.1907, shows him as Commandant of Bhavnagar Lancers appointed to a commission as 2/Lieutenant Native Land Forces while 1773, 20.10.1917 shows transfer to Unattached List and then Indian Army 25.8.17

13. “When his horse fell down exhausted, he carried his saddlery, arms and ammunition for 35 miles through sandy desert, remaining three days without food or water, thus showing splendid endurance. He was promoted Daffadar under orders of SSO Mysore Lancers.”

14. The Gazette does not stipulate whether Military or Civil Division. In 1920 he wrote asking for a military ribbon (BL/IOLR/L/P& ADNS/15/48 H217, 1920). Listed as Major General under Camel Corps in IST Army List January 1920.

15. This award is mentioned in “Bikaner in the Great War” for 1919 but has not been traced in the London Gazette16. This was the first IOM awarded for the Egypt/Palestine Theatre. It is mentioned in this issue of the London Gazette in a narrative of

events provided by Major General A. Wilson, Commanding Canal Defences, as having already been awarded. The actual authority for the award has not been traced in the London Gazette though Peter Duckers, Reward of Valour – The Indian Order of Merit 1914-1918, p.49 cites the Gazette of India number but dated 24.12.1914

17. As with Sepoy Ali Khan’s IOM, the award is mentioned in this issue of the London Gazette in a narrative of events provided by Major General A Wilson, Commanding Canal Defences, as having already been made. The actual authority for the award has not been traced in the London Gazette. Nevertheless, a citation has been noted, though the source unfortunately not identified. “During an encounter with Turkish troops near Bir-el-Nuss on 20 November 1914, Sepoy Faiz Ali Khan was wounded by a bullet and sword and spear thrusts. He was left for dead but when he came to he was able to struggle back to Bir-el-Nuss (4 miles). There he found some water and afterwards was able to walk back to Kantara (20 miles)”.

26. On the 25th September 1916, at Kiderengwa Drift, south of Kwa-Hongo. He lost his life in a very gallant effort to reconnoitre the enemy’s position on the south bank of the Mgeta River. He knew that his attempt courted death, but volunteered for it. He had previously shown gallantry of a similar nature at Kwedihombo where he reconnoitred in the immediate neighbourhood of a bridge held by the enemy.” – E.A. GRO No 1024, 1 November 1916. 30. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the night of 26-27 July 1918, during the withdrawal of his small patrol before a superior and enterprising enemy, he particularly distinguished himself when he returned to the assistance of a wounded man. He alternately bandaged the wounded man and kept up a fire, thereby keeping the enemy at bay. Under fire he carried the wounded man and his rifle over very difficult ground in the darkness until extricated by his patrol. This gallant action resulted in the saving of the wounded man’s life

34. “Has rendered excellent service during the whole campaign. The health kept by 3 Kashmir Rifles, which has suffered a very small amount of sickness compared with other Indian units, is mainly due to his unceasing care.”

35. For action on 8.8.1916 at Matamondo – WD WO 95/5332/1836. For action on 10.9.1916 at Nkessa – WD WO 95/5332/18.37. “For a very daring reconnaissance [24 October 1916 at DAKAWA} on the enemy’s picquet line in charge of a party of three other

scouts. He crossed the MGETA and creeping along under the river bank located an enemy picquet and by crawling to within a few yards obtained valuable information as to their strength and disposition etc. In spite of very heavy enemy fire he kept his party well together and killed one German officer before withdrawing.” [Given as a prompt reward]

38. He commanded the unit at this time and was later appointed OBE in 1919. He retired from the Indian Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, subsequently became an ordained Minister in the Church of England and returned to India for a while where he served during the Second World War. His interesting group of seven medals was sold in January 2002

39. “For the highly efficient manner in which he has at all times commanded and handled his Regiment, it being due to his ability, zeal and force of example that the regiment has acquired such a distinguished record. In the field he has displayed coolness, initiative and a high degree of courage.” (Smuts)

43. “For conspicuous gallantry on the 9th October 1916. The regiment having occupied some of the enemy’s trenches, it became necessary to halt. 44. For skillful leading at Umbra on 13 March [1916] when, with his patrol, he attacked and drove in the enemy’s picquets in face of a heavy fire. On this occasion he was on the move for 16 hours continuously, water being scarce and the heat excessive. This is the second


time this officer’s name has been brought to notice for gallantry.” - EA GRO 644 19 July 1916 – TNA WO 123/288. He had been promoted to Major and appointed Second in Command on 1 June 1916 – EA GRO 621 (ii) dated 12 July 1916.

45. “In an encounter with the enemy near Msambweni on 12 December 1915 he crept forward through the grass and under heavy fire got quite close to the enemy. Having obtained the dispositions of the enemy he returned, reporting to the OC patrol, who was thus enabled to concentrate a heavy fire in that direction, thereby causing the enemy to retire.” - EA GRO 644 19 July 1916 – TNA WO 123/288

50. Already holding the Brevet rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he was promoted Temporary Lieutenant Colonel wef 11 March 1916 – G o I No 764 dated 20 April 1918. His DSO was gazetted as 5th Cavalry with no mention of Jodhpur Lancers.

51. For conspicuous gallantry in an attack on the 23rd September 1918. Previous to the attack he twice conducted patrols with great coolness under heavy fire from guns, machine guns and rifles, each time bringing back reliable information. He accurately spotted gun flashes in action and killed one of the crew. Later on he rendered good service in capturing guns and prisoners in the upper part of the town

52. “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer, accompanied only by his trumpeter, charged an entrenched machine gun, killing and scattering the crew and capturing the gun. At the same time he captured the commandant of a regiment and another officer.”

55. IGS telegram A 806 18.3.1917 referred to this as IDSM – WD 95/5370 but E.A. GRO 270.7 dated 19.3.1917 and quoting C in C India letter No. 43473/: (AG10) dated 21.12.1916 clearly refers to IMSM

56. “…for devotion to duty in the field on the night of 4th-5th November 1917, when in command of a patrol which was attacked by superior enemy forces with machine guns, when by his skilful handling of his men he prevented the enemy from rounding up his patrol and eventually drove them off after an action lasting two hours.”

57. His DSO was gazetted 3rd Supp 29886 1.1.1917 to LG 29.12.1916 as T/Lieutenant Colonel, Indian Army, attached Liverpool Regiment. The citation for the first bar noted “He led his regiment in a mounted attack with great dash. In front of a bridgehead his leadership and resource were mainly responsible for three mounted attacks converging at the same moment.” The citation for his second bar noted “On the 23rd September 1918, during the attack on Haifa, Major Lambert commanded the advanced guard of the 15th Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade. He pushed forward and occupied all tactical points close to the enemy’s position and led the Mysore Lancers in the attack with great gallantry.”

58. During the action of the 26th October 1918, this Indian officer showed great coolness and devotion to duty, under very heavy fire, during a charge against a strongly held enemy position. Though wounded he continued to perform his duties, thus inspiring the men by his example

59. For gallantry and initiative on the 23rd September 1918. He brought his machine gun sub section across the open under heavy fire, and galloped up stony ground to a apposition which the enemy was just evacuating. He, himself, was on ahead with his range-taker and killed a Turkish officer with his sword on the way to the position.

60. During the action of the 26th October 1918, this Indian officer showed great coolness and gallantry under very heavy fire, while leading his squadron in a charge against a strongly held enemy position. He rallied the squadron after his British officer had been killed and continued in action though the squadron had suffered heavy casualties.

61. During the action of the 26th October 1918, this Indian officer showed great gallantry while leading his squadron in a charge against a strongly held enemy position under very heavy fire. He was severely wounded in the hand and chest, but continued to lead his squadron until exhaustion compelled him to fall out. His splendid example inspired all ranks

62. For conspicuous gallantry and determination when with 250 men he captured 373 of the enemy. He was twice held up by strong entrenched picquets, who were covering parties attempting to cross the river in pontoons, but he pushed on under heavy fire inflicting great loss on those crossing and prevented any further attempt at escape. His name appeared in the London Gazette dated 17 March 1917 without deeds. His DSO was awarded vide Supp 29344 29.10.1915 to LG 29.10.1915 while serving as Brigade Signalling Officer, 15 Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade and was probably for Mahadat. He was appointed to Patiala as SSO in November 1915 (NAI. F&P-Intl-Nov 1915-180-288-Pt B)

63. “For gallantry and devotion to duty on the night of the 29th-30th April 1918, when in command of an advance guard, which was suddenly held up by a party of the enemy with machine guns concealed in thick scrub. Captain Bhagwan Singh led his men in such a prompt and fearless manner that the enemy were forced to retire hastily.”

64. “For gallantry and devotion to duty on the 30th April 1918. His platoon came under very heavy shell and machine gun fire. An order was issued for the company to withdraw to a more sheltered position, but Subadar Dharm Singh remained where he was, as he had two seriously wounded men with him whom he could not remove. He remained there for over two hours until stretcher bearers could go out and bring the men in.”

65. “For gallant and meritorious service. During recent operations he was badly shot through the wrist on the first day the regiment went into action. Though suffering considerable pain he refused to be evacuated and remained on duty throughout the operations another five days.”

He did fine work.” Neither the theatre of operations nor date of incident is specified. Lt Clarke served with the Patiala Infantry in both the Dardanelles and Egypt/Palestine

He was promoted to Lieutenant 11.2.1916 (ADN 192, 18.2.1916) and transferred to the Indian Army in that rank (ADN 1773, 19.10.1917). According to the unit history he received a Bar to the MC. This has not been traced and is believed to be an error
