Appendix I – Certificates and Environmental Standards

Certificate Description

ISO 9001 This standard sets out the benchmark for a Quality Management System (QMS)

and it can be used by any organization regardless of its field of activity. In fact,

there are over one million companies and organizations in over 170 countries

certified to ISO 9001 (ISO, 2015). This standard is based on several quality

management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and

implication of top management, the process approach, leadership, continual

improvement and relationship management.

ISO 14000 The ISO 14000 family of standards provides practical tools for companies and

organizations of all kinds looking to manage their environmental responsibilities

(ISO, 2015). This standard, provides a guideline or framework for organizations

that need to systematize and improve their environmental management efforts

and it can be used by any organization regardless of its activity or sector. By

owning this certificate, Renascimento assures to not only company management

and employees, but also to external stakeholders, that environmental impact is

being measured and improved.

OHSAS 18001

The OHSAS 18001 is an Occupation Health and Safety Assessment Series for

health and safety management systems. It is intended to help organizations to

control occupational health and safety risks (OHSAS, 2015). By owning this

standard, Renascimento is proving that it has put in place the policies, procedures

and controls needed to achieve the best possible working conditions and

workplace safety.

The QES director leads the department that sets environmental processes and makes sure they

are being followed under the security rules set by environmental entities such as the DGAV.

The second is the Financial Department, whose leaders are, on the one hand the financial

director who is responsible for the accountability, purchases and cash, and on the other hand,

the IT responsible who is in charge of external services and informatics. Then, there is the

Commercial, Marketing and Development Department led by the marketing director who has

the umbrella of all the business units of the company and is responsible for all the commercial

technicians, for the clients support department and also the marketing and communication area

of Renascimento. At last, the Operations Department, which is focused on the operational areas

of each business unit, having a more stratified management on the Lisbon unit due to its

dimension and the broader offerings, i.e. external services area, special projects area, logistics

area, maintenance area, warehouse area and business unit of treatment of ELV. The warehouse

and production responsible of Lisbon’s unit is then responsible for eight different dimensions,

i.e. waste of WEEE unit, wood unit, RCDW unit, non-hazardous waste unit, hazardous waste

unit, quality control unit, ELV’s unit and RDF unit. Similar to the warehouse and production

responsible, the clients support coordinator has collaborators for each set of customers, namely,

clients assistant for small containers, clients assistant for larger containers, clients assistant for

the ELVs and tires area, WEEE clients assistant, direct and recovered clients assistant, external

services clients assistant and documental support and finally billing technicians. In conclusion,

it is also important to mention the labour office, such as mechanicals, locksmiths, maintenance

helpers and hydraulics technicians.

Market Research – Questionnaire

Somos um grupo de três alunos de Mestrado de Gestão, da Nova School of Business and Economics, e estamos,

neste momento, a realizar um questionário no âmbito da nossa tese de mestrado.

O grande objetivo desta pesquisa é tentar perceber, a um nível mais qualitativo, como é que as empresas nos

diversos sectores lidam com a gestão de resíduos das mesmas, bem como a sua visão relativamente a este

assunto. Para este propósito, gostaríamos que nos respondesse o mais completo possível as questões que se

seguem, exprimindo o melhor possível a sua opinião nos vários pontos em que este questionário se centra.

Toda a informação disponibilizada em resposta as nossas perguntas será anónimo, sendo que nem o seu nome,

nem o da empresa, serão mencionados.

Questões:

1. Poderia descrever-nos o processo de gestão de resíduos da sua empresa?

(Por exemplo, em termos de: produtos, serviços prestados, atividades de transporte, recolha,

acondicionamento, embalamento, entre outros. Tudo o que nos conseguir dizer será do maior valor para

este trabalho)

2. Poderia indicar-nos o nome da empresa que atualmente opera na gestão de resíduos da vossa empresa
