TODAY’S READINGS
his saying is hard; who can accept it?” (John 6:60) What was “this saying” that the people could not accept? It was Jesus’ words that we needed to eat his flesh and drink his blood. You can understand how,
if taken too literally, such a statement would turn people away. But Jesus wasn’t speaking about ritual cannibalism. He wasn’t inviting people to take a bite out of his arm. No, he was talking sacramentally. He was pointing to the time when they would experience his presence deeply as they gathered to celebrate his death and resurrection. He was pointing to the way he would be present in the bread that they broke and the wine that they shared.
Why was this so hard to hear? In part, because the people took him too literally. But it was also hard because Jesus was telling the people how generous God was. There was no “work” that they had to do (John 6:28‐29). They didn’t need to go looking for a new Moses. They just needed to come and receive. God would provide for them, just as he—not Moses—fed their ancestors with manna in the desert (6:32).
This is probably one of the biggest challenges that we all face—the challenge to let go and simply receive from God. It’s never easy to give up control, but God promises that as we do, he will take over and enable us to do things that we could never do on our own. Our fallen nature wants to dictate the terms of our relationship with God, but the Holy Spirit wants to show us how much more exciting and fulfilling it is when we surrender to him and let him lead us.
If you are finding it hard to let go of something right now, just remember the One who is asking for this surrender: Jesus Christ, the Holy One of God (John 6:69). He won’t lead you astray.

LECTURAS DE HOY
ios, hablando por boca del profeta, decía: “Así como el cielo está por encima de la tierra, así también mis ideas y mi
manera de actuar están por encima de las de ustedes” (Isaías 55,9). Durante su vida en la tierra, Jesús reveló algunos de esas sublimes ideas en las enseñanzas que podemos leer en el capítulo 6 del Evangelio según San Juan.
Las palabras de Cristo eran tan profundas que para algunos de sus contemporáneos fueron una piedra de tropiezo. Por su actitud de desconfianza e incredulidad, trataban de entender las verdades divinas con su razonamiento puramente humano, sin elevar el entendimiento hacia el cielo y lo que Jesús les decía se les hizo imposible de aceptar y muchos dejaron de seguirlo (Juan 6,66). ¡Qué tragedia! La propia enseñanza que rechazaban era el don que el Señor les ofrecía para ayudarles a entrar en el Reino de la salvación.
Pero a pesar de este don, algunos se apartaron porque no dejaron que esta verdad les llegara al corazón. Como lo dijo San Bernardo: “Para algunos es evidente que las palabras de Jesús son espíritu y vida, por eso pueden seguirlo; otros encuentran que sus palabras son inaceptables y bus‐can alguna despreciable consolación en otra parte” (Sermones sobre varias ocasiones, 5). A nosotros se nos presenta la misma disyuntiva: Jesús o este mundo, lo que sin duda es una despreciable consolación.
Al principio del Evangelio de San Juan, se dice que Jesús es la Palabra de Dios (Juan 1,1), la cual nos comunica la sabiduría que necesitamos para vivir según la voluntad de Dios. Al comu‐nicarnos la sabiduría, Jesús mismo se nos da en la Palabra y la Sagrada Eucaristía, que son el alimento que nos fortalece para que vivamos cristianamente aquí en la tierra, y si nos mantenemos fieles, para que tengamos la vida eterna. “Señor, ¿a quién podemos ir? Tú tienes
palabras de vida eterna. Abre nuestro entendimiento, Señor, para que sepamos entender tu Palabra y ser dóciles a la acción del Espíritu Santo en nuestro corazón.”

LABOR DAY
On Labor Day, Monday, September 3 the Cathedral will open at 7:30am and close at 1pm for this Federal holiday. Masses will be celebrated at 8am and 12:10pm (no Confessions), and the parish offices will be closed.

BACKTOSCHOOL DRIVE A SUCCESS! Thank you so much to the many supporters of the Back‐to‐School Supplies drive!! We received bag upon bag of pens, pencils, paper, rulers, markers, erasers, calculators, monetary donations, and so much more. As a result of your generosity, we were able to provide each of the school‐aged children from economically distressed families in our parish a backpack full of all the supplies they need. BOOK CLUB
St. Matthew's Book Club will meet on Monday, September 10 to discuss Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables. It is a story of a seemingly haunted New England mansion and the family that has occupied the house for centuries. Hawthorne explores themes of guilt, retribution, and atonement in this 19th‐century novel. The meeting will be held in the West Conference Room starting at 6:45pm. All are welcome to attend.
The Book Club meets on Mondays. The reading list for the remainder of the year is as follows: October 22 – Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel; December 10 – The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien; February 4 – Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc by Mark Twain; March 11 – The Homeless Bishop by Joseph Girzone; April 22 – April 1865: The Month That Saved America by Jay Winik; and June 10 – A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. BECOMING CATHOLIC Throughout the year, adults come forward seeking to learn about the Catholic faith. For those who are interested in learning about the Catholic faith or thinking about becoming Catholic, St. Matthew’s offers Inquiry, a casual, ongoing conversation about the Catholic faith, once a month. Inquiry is the first step in the process of discerning one’s commitment to full initiation in the Catholic Church. Inquiry meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 7:30pm in the East Conference Room. A brief overview of the entire adult initiation process (RCIA), which begins formally in June each year, can be presented after Inquiry for those who are interested. RELIGIOUS LIBERTY PRAYER CAMPAIGN
Prayer is our most significant tool in the fight for freedom. Each time we engage in conversation with our Lord, He gifts us with the grace to become His witnesses in the world. A “Minute to Win It!” campaign was begun in the Archdiocese on May 23, 2012 and will run through the Solemnity of Christ the King, celebrated on November 25, 2012. Join the faithful of the Archdiocese of Washington each day at 3pm and pray for the protection of religious freedom. Take a minute of your day and pray with us the following prayer:
Loving Father, Thank you for the gift of life and for the freedom to love and worship You. Through the power of the Holy Spirit inspire us to be your witnesses. Grant us the courage to boldly and joyfully stand in protection of our freedom. In your mercy, guard our religious freedom so we may continue to live out our faith and transform the world in which we live. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

FALL 2012 SCHOLA CANTORUM VOLUNTEER OPENINGS Did you know that as many as half or more of the members of the Cathedral’s highly‐acclaimed Schola Cantorum are volunteer parishioners and friends of the cathedral? For this new liturgical season, there are a limited number of openings in all voice parts for experienced choral singers. Schola members sing for both the 10:00am (Latin) and 11:30am (English) Sunday Eucharists in one of the most rewarding acoustic settings in the Washington area. Because of the nature of the music (Gregorian chant, renaissance polyphony and later anthems), and the amount of repertoire each week, prospective singers must have significant adult choral experience, good sight‐reading skills, and a pleasant, agile voice. The commitment of time and focused energy is significant, particularly at Christmas and Holy Week. Extra singing opportunities include Archdiocesan liturgies and civic and community functions and concerts. 2012 ‐ 2013 Season: August 29 – January 13 and February 6 – June 2. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings, 6:45 – 8:45pm in the weeks when the choir is singing. CELEBRATING MARRIAGE Couples who are interested in celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage at the Cathedral are encouraged to visit the parish website to review our guidelines for weddings. The next step is to call the Rectory at 202‐347‐3215 and ask for the priest of your choice or the priest on duty, who can speak to you about marriage preparation and the possibility of scheduling your wedding ceremony at the Cathedral. Couples are expected to contact us at least nine (9) months in advance of the date on which they hope to celebrate their wedding.
CELEBRATING BAPTISM Parents who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal Coordinator at the Rectory at baptism@ stmatthewscathedral.org or 202‐347‐3215 x555. Parents are encouraged to make contact with us at least six (6) months in advance of a desired baptismal date, at which time they may ask for the priest of their choice to perform the Baptism. This early contact enables parents to be scheduled for the necessary sacramental formation session before the child’s baptism and allows time for sponsors to obtain letters from their parish pastor.

People from around the country and around the world are drawn to the Cathedral by its history, art and architecture and its invitation to prayer and worship. We invite you to plan a visit or pilgrimage to our Cathedral—all are welcome. Visitors are invited to schedule a guided tour or to take a self‐guided tour using the color brochures available at the inside entrance to the Cathedral. Guided tours are given free of charge. WELCOMING ALL
For wheelchair access to the Cathedral, enter the driveway to the parking garage next to the Cathedral. Ring the buzzer at the Conference Center door located at the bottom of the driveway to enter. Take the elevator up to the Cathedral level. A sign language interpreter is present at the Sunday 11:30am Mass and at designated special liturgies throughout the year. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. Those desiring to take advantage of the induction loop should sit in pews B1, B3, A1 or A3 and switch their hearing aids to "T."

General Information – The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program of St. Matthew’s Cathedral provides English language instruction to adults (ages 18 and up) during three semesters: fall, spring and summer. In the previous two school years, the ESL Program provided language instruction to 146 students from 37 countries in Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle‐East. Sixty‐six (66) percent of the students came from countries in Latin America and 34 percent came from countries outside Latin America. As an all‐volunteer program, the instruction was provided to the students by 95 volunteers. The average number of students per class level was eight. The following is information regarding the upcoming Fall semester. Durante los dos años escolares previos, el Programa ESL proporcionó enseñanza del idioma Inglés a 146 estudiantes procedentes de 37 países de América Latina, Europa, Asia, África y Medio Oriente. El sesenta y seis (66) porciento de los estudiantes eran procedentes de países latinoamericanos y el 34 porciento restante de países fuera de América Latina. Como todo programa de voluntariado la enseñanza para los estudiantes estuvo a cargo de 95 participantes voluntarios. El número promedio de estudiantes por clase fue de ocho. La información correspondiente el próxima semestre de Otoño es la siguiente. English Language Classes for Adults – The 13‐week Fall Semester of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program will extend from September 18 to December 13. During this period, classes will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, with optional pre‐class tutoring between 6:00 to 6:30pm. Language instruction will be provided at Level 1 (Beginner) through Level 5 (Advanced). Students may register, in person, starting Thursday, September 13, between 6:30 and 8:30 pm, at St. Matthew’s Education Center, 1726 N Street, NW. At registration, each student will be assessed to determine the appropriate class level in which he/she will be placed. Student registrations will be accepted until October 9. The cost of the 13‐week semester is $40. There will be no classes the week of November 22, Thanksgiving Day. Las clases de inglés serán impartidas desde el Nivel 1 (principiante) hasta el Nivel 5 (avanzado). Los estudiantes pueden inscribirse en persona a partir del jueves 13 de septiembre, de las 6:30 a las 8:30 pm en el St. Matthew’s Education Center (Centro de Educación de San Mateo), 1726 N Street, NW. Volunteers Needed for ESL Program: Teachers, Tutors & Persons of Hospitality – We are looking for volunteers to serve as teachers, tutors, and persons of hospitality one night per week (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) in the Fall Semester of the ESL Program. Please see above for more details. While volunteers are not required to have formal training in teaching English as a second language, we expect their native language to be English. Classes will be taught in English only. If you are not comfortable teaching a class on your own, we can pair you with a more experienced teacher. If you are interested in volunteering, contact the ESL Program Coordinator at [email protected]. Important: Persons who have not previously served as volunteers with St. Matthew’s ESL Program will be required to meet with the ESL Program Coordinator on Wednesday, August 29 or Wednesday, September 5, from 6:30 to 7:30pm. No es un requisito que los voluntarios tengan una capacitación formal como maestros de Español como segundo idioma sin embargo se espera que la lengua materna de los voluntarios sea el Español. Se espera asimismo que los voluntarios como mínimo cuenten con un titulo universitario. Las clases serán impartidas sólo en Español. Si usted no se siente a gusto dando la clase por sí solo podemos acomodarlo junto con algún maestro con más experiencia. English (ESL) and Spanish (SSL) Language Programs Volunteer Assistant Coordinator Needed – The Coordinator of St. Matthew’s ESL and SSL programs is looking for a dedicated volunteer to serve as Assistant Coordinator. The Assistant Coordinator should possess the following: (1) strong communication skills – oral and written; (2) strong interpersonal skills; (3) strong organization and planning skills; (4) fluency and creativity in preparing documents in Excel and Word; and, (4) enthusiasm, energy, and initiative. The Assistant Coordinator would be expected to serve four to six hours per week during the course of the fall, spring and summer semesters, as well as a few additional hours per week during the beginning weeks of each semester.
