AP World History | Summer 2019 Bridge Assignment Dear Student, Welcome to AP World History! For most students, this is your first Advanced Placement course. APWH is an exceptionally interesting and thought-provoking class, but also one which will press you to go beyond knowing what has happened in history – but also why it happened and its significance. You will grow in your historical thinking and writing as you research and debate historical and ethical questions which persist to today. If you are intellectually curious, if you like to argue, if you love to read…APWH is the right place for you! Our class will cover 1,000+ years of human history from every region of the world, much of it in places you’ve (probably) studied very little. It will be interesting, sometimes fascinating, but also demanding. It’s a lot to absorb in only nine months. Your summer work will aid you to find success in the year ahead by letting you accomplish a few critical objectives before school starts. These include: filling in the “history gap” between Rome and the Renaissance – particularly emphasizing Greco- Roman/European cultural and political development (i.e. the Western heritage) – ensures you have a sense of continuity between the classical and modern worlds building a foundation of knowledge about pre-Colombian America, Africa, and Asia upon which you can construct more extensive regional histories identifying key “turning points” in history – moments when the world seems somehow to have shifted in a new or different direction as a result of new technology, discovery, conquest, or idea forming a “big picture” view of the sweep of world history over the last two millennia Summer assignments must be handwritten in a stitched composition book. Your first test – over the summer readings – is planned for the second week of school. To motivate, encourage, and reward diligence, you will be permitted to use your composition book on the test (i.e. only handwritten notes – typed notes may not be used).
