Short Answer Based on some of the feedback several of you have given me re: previous study guides, I’ve tried to“reverse engineer” the questions on the next unit test. The result is the “Short Answer” questions below. Hopefully these will helpyou focus your studying efforts.

Tang/Song China & East Asia

1. Which religions/belief systems were the most common during the Tang dynasty?

2. How much of the Han Dynasty’s governmental techniques/structure did the Tang dynasty copy? Howdid the Tang dynasty attempt to avoid the problem(s) that had caused the Han Dynasty to end? Howwell did their attempts work, and what caused their attempt(s) to work/not work?

3. What new class of military official emerged in Japan in the post-classical era? What were theirresponsibilities/functions?

4. What differences existed in the rights granted men and women in post-classical China? How didthose differences vary by social class?

5. How did the civil service examination system in China compare to other post-classical empires’bureaucracies?

6. What was unique/notable about The Tale of Genji?
