Judaism• One of the world’s oldest

religions• Monotheistic religion that

evolved in Southwest Asia• 3 branches-Orthodox,

Conservative and Reformed• Not evangelical-does not seek

converts• Concentrated in Israel, but

widely scattered in Middle East, North Africa, Russia, Ukraine, Europe and the Americas

The Kingdom of Israel –1025BC• Around 1025BC, the

Hebrews emerged from the Sinai Peninsula and into the Fertile Crescent.

• Ancient Israel was located in Palestine, which was the crossroads between Mesopotamia & Egypt.

• The Kingdom was constantly threatened by invaders.

• The Kingdom flourished under King David & King Solomon.

David & Solomon• David was a great general• His son, Solomon, was very

wise.• Solomon ruled during an era

of peace & made Jerusalem a great city.

• But, to pay for the buildings, he heavily taxed the people.

• When Solomon died in 930BC, civil war broke out making the kingdom weak.

Two Kingdoms• The Northern kingdom of Israel was

conquered by the Assyrians. The ten tribes that lived there have been lost to history

• The Southern Kingdom of Judah was conquered by the Babylonians and forced into exile.

• In 500BC, the Hebrews returned & rebuilt Jerusalem, but came under the rule of the Persians, the Greeks and the Romans.

• In 70AD, the Romans forced the Hebrews out of Palestine. This is called the Diaspora. The Jews (Hebrews) spread out across the world.

Rosh Hashanah• Means literally, the "head of

the year.“• It is the Jewish New Year. • It ushers in a period of high

holy days for reflection and repentance.

• A ram’s horn or shofar is sounded. (the ram is used because Abraham sacrificed a ram instead of Isaac

Yom Kippur• Means "Day of Atonement," and is

the most important holy day, the last of the high holy days.

• It is a time of confessing of sins, atoning or making amends for wrongdoing, and seeking forgiveness, and it comes ten days after Rosh Hashanah.

• The shofar, or ram’s horn, is sounded at the end of Yom Kippur.

Hanukkah• Commemorates the defeat of

the Syrian Greeks by the Maccabes in 165 B.C.

• Also the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem.

• Miraculously, a tiny container of oil was found in the Temple burned for eight days.

Passover• A spring festival lasting seven or

eight days, recalling the angel of death "passing over" the Hebrews.

• As the first born of the Egyptians were taken by death of the last of the great plagues brought by God on the Egyptian captors.

• A home and synagogue ceremonial meal recalls the bitter experience of slavery in Egypt and the haste of the escape, or "Exodus."

Christianity• Religion founded by Jesus.• Jesus was born in Bethlehem,

small town near Jerusalem, during Roman rule.

• Christians believe that Jesus is the messiah, which is the Son of God sent to save the Jews & restore the Kingdom of Israel.

• Many Jews didn’t believe this. They thought Jesus was a trouble maker.

Jesus’ Teachings• Parables – short stories with simple moral

lessons to teach people kindness.• Jesus said God was kind and people who

were kind and unselfish would be rewarded by God.

• His teachings were spread outside of Palestine after his death by his friends (disciples)

• The Romans tried to kill all Christians, but failed.

• Over 200 years after Jesus’ death, the Roman emperor Constantine converted to Christianity and made Christianity the official religion of the empire.
