The ‘Holy Walk’ Returns!November 24, 25 and 26, 2011 from 6 to 9 pm.

AFTER A THREE-YEAR ABSENCE, Bruce Mines will once again be the hostcommunity for the interactive, non-denominational event that tells the story of ayoung couple’s very special journey to Bethlehem to pay their taxes.

But THIS journey to Bethlehem is much easier than ‘the original’. It’s a one kmcandle light walk, starting at the Bruce Mines United Church, and wending its waythrough the Tourist Park to the ‘Stable’ in Bethlehem, to witness the birth of the babyJesus.

The journey isn’t easy. Aside from the weather and the uneven road, the real chal-lenges are to get past the brutish soldiers, hungry beggars and live farm animals. You’ll also encounter three wise men, shepherds, angels and a young couple hurryingto find a safe place to deliver their first born.

At the end of the walk, attendees return to the United Church to enjoy a ‘Social’accompanied by choir performances. Prior to its recent 3 year hiatus, the popularevent had run continuously for 17 years. The inspirational re-creation of the firstChristmas is not connected with, nor sponsored by, any single church or faith group.Coffee and sweets are available for free at the end of the performance. There’s nocharge to participate, but donations to cover the costs of staging this event are grate-fully accepted.

Pat Kerr, one of the all-volunteer organizing team tells us that they could still usesome more help in putting on the event. “We need home made cookies and/orsquares for the actors and guests for all three nights of the walk. These are muchneeded refreshment and a reward for a job well done. The amazing home madegoodies donated each year are an essential part of the show. They are a “gift” that weas a community give to our guests.” If you’d like to help out, you can deliver yourtreats to the church kitchen before 5 pm each night. More information is available bycalling Leah Fleming at (705) 785-3148.

“Anything else?” we asked. “We need beggars!” says Pat. “This is a vital role, as theseactors or actresses add colour with their unique take on the performance. They alsoare a strong social statement. The baby that changed the world was born in extremepoverty in an occupied country.” she reminds us.

If you wish to volunteer as an actor in the program or to make reservations for largegroups, buses or special needs, call 705 785-3867, email Pat Kerr at: [email protected], or visit the Bruce Mines Holy Walk Facebook page.

So whether you’re a budding actor, a star baker or simply wanting to take part in avery special stroll, take the short trip to Bruce Mines next month. We’re sure the Walkwill be worth the drive!

What Will be your Act of Remembrance?THANKSGIVING HAS PASSED and if you think about it, many of the blessings weenjoy are a direct result of the service provided by our armed forces past andpresent. As November approaches, the Legion focuses on our most important dayof the year, Remembrance Day and our Poppy Campaign.

We strive to keep the memory alive of the 117,000 plus men and women who paidthe supreme sacrifice in the service of Canada, and honour them. We are theGuardians of Remembrance and the lines from John McCrae’s poem - “…if yebreak faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in FlandersFields…” – are as true today as when first written, extending from the battlefieldbordering Belgium and France to the streets in Kabul, Afghanistan and all thebattlefields in between.

The Royal Canadian Legion ensures poppies are made available to all Canadians. We don’t sell them, but we do gratefully accept donations toward our Poppy Fund.Your donations collected in our coin boxes as well as through the purchase ofwreaths are only used in support of our veterans and the rules of the fund arestrictly enforced.

The Poppy Fund:• Provides assistance to needy veterans and their dependants.

• Supports training, research and provides community medical appliances toassist in the care of veterans.

• Funds Canadian Military Family Resource Centres.

• Funds housing and care facilities for elderly and disabled persons.

• Provides bursaries to children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren ofveterans.

• Supports drop-in centres for seniors and funding for meals-on-wheels.

Please make your Act of Remembrance a meaningful one by wearing a poppy andattending the Remembrance Day service at Branch 374 St Joseph Island, November 11 at 10.45 a.m.

A Special Honour for a Very Special VolunteerSEVERAL LOCAL AND AREA PEOPLE WERE HONOURED at the the Canadian RedCross’s annual Volunteer Awards Dinner on October 19.

The theme - Birds of a Feather - was inspired by Algoma University student YukaYamada who, during the Japan Earthquake Appeal, along with fellow students, raisedover $6,000.

Sault & Area District Branch Manager Diane Lajambe tells us that for each donation apaper origami crane was made. Then a Japanese flag was formed from the cranes andpresented to the Canadian Red Cross. Yuka taught the volunteers at the branch howto make the origami cranes for decorations for the hall.

Mayor Debbie Amaroso greeted the volunteers and Diane Girard, president, OntarioZone Branch Council of the Canadian Red Cross, helped to present the awards.

The Order of the Red Cross, the organization’s highest award for volunteer service, was presented to Lorrena Bookman (right in photo) from St. Joseph Island.

Recipients are recognized for outstanding performance through superior contribu-tions in volunteerism or leadership at the branch, regional, zone or national level forat least 10 years. Lorrena is the 228th person to receive such an honour.

Congratulations, Lorrena. We thank you and your fellow Red Cross volunteers for allyou’ve done to make the world a little better place!

Standing Room Only!FRIDAY NIGHT’S CROWD filled the Legion Hall to capacity– and then some – as Archie Pateman and his Breakmenbuddies once again demonstrated why they’re so in-demandby their fans.

And the evening turned out to be every bit of the fun ‘Honky-tonk Dance’ that the Breakmen had promised. At first it wasthe kids … happily dancing and frolicking to the music, as themore genteel adults contented themselves with listening andtapping their toes. But as the second set kicked into gear, sotoo did the audience. From then on, the dance floor in frontof the stage was packed with dancers of all ages and sizes.

Bill Pateman also took the stage with his band The B Boys – arather strange-looking, but very talented assortment of odd-balls – and he left no doubt about where Archie’s incredibletalent came from.

All in all, a fantastic night for everyone! Come back again realsoon, boys! This part of the world is definitely ‘Breakmen’territory and you’ll always be welcome here!
