Founded in 1961, the TorontoMontessori School quickly es-tablished itself as the schoolof choice for parents whowanted a first rate educationfor their children … or atleast for those who could af-ford the fees.
Today the top-rated schoolhas expanded into a highschool as well, and now serves students from 18months (Toddler) to grade 12. This major expansion forcedthe school to relocate to two campuses in Richmond Hill (onefor Toddler to Grade 6, the other for Grades 7 to 12). Evenafter moving to another city, the original school retained its‘Toronto’ connection in its name, only adapting to changingtimes lately, with its new, shorter moniker of ‘TMS School’.
It would be an understatement tosay that Evelyn lovesher job. Yet, here’s an-other little fact abouther: although she im-merses herself in a re-warding and fulfillingcareer and lives in alarge, sophisticated envi-ronment, she still hasn’tbeen completely absorbedinto that urban culture.
The Greater Toronto Arealifestyle hasn’t been able totake over that large part ofher heart that still remainsright here on her beloved St.Joseph Island.
You see, before she movedsouth to accept her calling asan educator, Evelyn lived andworked for 20 of her earlyyears here on St. Joe, as did herchildren, both of whom at-tended the Island CentralSchool in Richards Landing.They all share a deep connec-tion to the island and look for-
ward to returning to visit every summer.
We recently found Evelyn and her family visiting her formerIn-laws - and still close friends - Mary-Kay and Ray Stortini attheir Shore Road home.We could quickly sense that this was

“The Island will always have a special place in my heart.There’s a lot of historyhere for us. No matterwhat, we keep comingback!” she sighs. “Look atus now… we lived hereuntil my daughter was 16,and here we are backagain, while she’s gettingher Master’s Degree!” theAlgoma University gradbeams proudly.
We asked Evelyn for a fewminutes of her time, be-cause we wanted her tointroduce us to a youngfellow by the name ofMalcolm Dooswaddle. You don’t know him?Well, if you’re ayoung child or the parent of one, you surely will soon! Mal-colm is the central character of a wonderful new children’sbook entitled ‘Malcolm Dooswaddle’s Good Day’ and it’s waymore than just your average ‘kiddie’ book.
Malcolm’s story grew out of an idea and a concern shared be-tween Evelyn and her fellow TMS teacher Michelle Hutchin-son about how vitally important a positive attitude andself-confidence are for young children, in overcoming thestresses they might be feeling in their formative years. Evelyn
wrote the story, while illustra-tor Michelle provided the visu-als.
“It seems that in today’s mate-rialistic society, so many kidsare unhappy and angry, some-times because the world - in-cluding their own parents -seems unhappy and angry.”Evelyn explains. “Kids today arereacting to more stress andsimply don’t know how to dealwith that stress.We want tohelp them understand … andturn it around to somethingpositive.” she continues. It’s ba-
sically a message of ‘do the best you can with what you’ve got.’The book aims to deliver a fun and entertaining story, whilehelping teach children how to let go of a lot of negativity.After all, each of us chooses how to view the world and reactto what’s going on.

Malcolm is a boy for whom every day seems tobe a bad day. He’s always feeling depressed andangry, while others seem to be so happy. Nomatter what he does or tries, everything seemsto go wrong for him, while life appears to be soeasy for others.
His gloomy outlook changes, however, whenhe meets a special man at a soup kitchen. Heeventually learns that, while he had been per-ceiving things negatively, he has the power to‘create his own happiness’ through self confi-dence and positive thinking.

Al-though intended for children aged 6 to 12, thebook has also gained quite a following amongadults. “It’s amazing to see the positive feed-back from parents and hear how they too havedecided to make changes in their own atti-tudes. Children watch adults and if all theadults in a child’s life are negative and de-featist, the child will be too.What the childlearns now about coping with life will carry onto their adulthood. And how one copes withthe stresses of life is determined by one personand one person only … yourself!”

Did you notice the signs andposters and wonder what theprogram entailed? Ask any ofthe women that participatedand they will be quick to in-form you with enthusiasm.Inspiring hands-on work-shops like ‘Equine Teacher’ byTracy Howson,Wildlife Pho-tography by Steffon McGre-gor, Archery by NottinghamNorth,Wild Edibles by EllisMcDonald,Wildlife Calling byKevin & Nathan Coombs andFly fishing & Fly tying byErich Eppert filled the day.
The sharing of skills and knowledge within our community is truly an Awesome Experience,bringing an awareness of how little we actually know of the world around us.
In this fast paced, crazy world we live in, it is important to refresh our enthusiasm for life,and this program is just the ticket. The workshops alone are worth taking a day for yourself,but wait—-there’s more! Evelyn stresses that parents should help their children readthe book. “It’s important to sit down with your children, toturn the pages and feel the book, as well as look at thewords.”

It also received an outstand-ing ‘Five Stars’ rating on Goodreads.com.

Evelyn and Michelle are currently putting the finishingtouches on an upcoming sequel, ‘Malcome Dooswaddle andthe Bully’ which, if anything like their first offering, is sure tobe a hit as well.
Their message is a good one and if it works for Malcolm, itcan work for the rest of us too. Perhaps we can all learn tomake every day a good day.

THE HAY MARSH is a vast, low lying area along the south-west shore of St. Joseph Island, in Jocelyn Township. Thereare higher points that project into the St. Mary’s River; theyare mostly tree - covered. The main area of the marsh is cov-ered with a variety of grasses and brush, while some areasnearer the shore produce mostly reeds and rushes. The marshis covered with up to 2 ½ feet of water, depending on the lev-els of Lake Huron and the St. Mary’s River.

An ‘After The Flood’ Roads UpdateAs of our Tuesday press time, the following updates wereavailable:
Plummer Additional:Trunk Road (between Jeffrey & Chapman) has now beenclosed until further notice for repairs.
In addition, the following roadways will remain closed untilfurther notice:
• Mount Zion East: east of Hwy 638 -only passable for 1.5 km
• Matheson Rd: full length
• Caribou: middle section between Government Rd& Plummer Rd - both ends (only) are open.
• McPhail Rd: from East Line to the intersection ofMcPhail and Chapman
• Asam: East of Hwy 638
• Plummer Road: from Hwy 638 toWest Rd

Travellers are reminded that reduced speeds are recom-mended and must use extreme caution when driving and beaware of public works equipment and personnel, oncomingvehicles, and traffic cones may still be present.
The state of emergency is still in effect.
Municipality of Huron Shores:The local state of emergency remains in effect although allMunicipal roads, except Hamilton Lake Road and Lake 11Road, are now open to local traffic.
Basswood Lake Road is also temporarily closed to allow for aculvert replacement.
The Municipality also advises that you may experience shortdelays on other roads to allow for continued repairworks. Many roads are open to one lane of traffic only.
Travellers must use extreme caution, drive slowly and be alertfor public works equipment and personnel, oncoming vehi-cles, traffic cones and barricades.
Be aware that washouts could still develop. In addition, re-duced speeds will assist in keeping dust levels to a minimum.

Hay Marsh reaches from Diboll’s Bay on the upper end to theMilitary Reserve at Fort St Joseph and consists of the shore-lines of about 18 lots and up to three-quarters of a mile oftheir depth. It is habitat to wildlife such as deer, moose andwaterfowl. Although it is all privately owned, there are perma-nent residents on the marsh. Access is mainly by boat.
Many acres of wild hay grow there, most of which is of novalue for domestic livestock. There is one variety called blue-joint hay, that was quite a useful and nutritious hay for the pi-oneer farmers, as well as for the farmers all along the westside of the Island in the drought years.
Hay Point is the large point at the upper end of Hay Marsh.
The Cranberry Marsh: Areas of the Hay Marsh produce wildcranberries naturally. There is an area bordering on a smalllake or pond that is called a floating bog. It is springy to walkon and it is said that there are many feet of soft mud under-neath. So, hunters and cranberry pickers beware.

In a bowl, mix 2-1/4 cups all purpose flour
2-1/2 tsp. baking powder
6 tbsp. butter
1/2 cup sugar
Mix in 1 cup of cream; add 1/2 cup of frozen berries.
Roll out into a round on a cookie sheet and cut into 12pieces. Brush with cream, sprinkle with sugar, and bake 17 -20 minutes.
