Friday night’s beautiful weather brought people out in record numbers, to watch theparade, eat tasty treats, try their hand at the many games of chance and get caught up

with old friends and neighbours.

And more than one record fell that night! JimJackson happily informed us that there were 50Panda Draw winners in 1 1/2 hours, surpassingthe previous all-time record of 43 winners forone night, in the 50+ years that the Panda Drawhas run. Fantastic!

Hospital Auxiliary Treasurer Barb Jackson isdelighted to report an excellent “Net” result forthe night - close to $6,000 raised for ourhospital!

As Saturday dawned to a gloomy overcast, many feared that Hilton Beach’s Community

Night would suffer from bad weather. Those fears dissipated just like the gloomyweather did! As if on cue, the clouds disappeared as soon as the parade got under way.Everyone enjoyed a near-perfect night for the festivities – and they made the most ofit.

Village Clerk Gloria Fischer tells us “We were very pleased with the Community Nightresults, especially considering the potential for rain, the looming labour situation atEssar and this year’s Community Nights running back-to-back.”

“Events like this are a tremendous undertaking, requiring a lot of hours from morethan 135 volunteers.” she continued. “It would not be possible without help from

many sources - permanent residents, seasonal residents, resi-dents from other municipalities, folk from the Hilton BeachTourist Park and the Marina.”

“Although the final numbers aren’t yet in, we think the nightwas a great success.” says Gloria. “Any funds not needed for theregular recreation programming are put into a reserve for largerprojects, such as the major renovations to the Hilton Hall, thelocation for many of our recreation events.”

Congratulations and thank you to the Hospital Auxiliary andthe Village of Hilton Beach for putting on two fabulous nightsfor everyone in the Community to enjoy.

Ship Crews in Dry Dock!IN LAST WEEK’S ISSUE, we featured the story of the visit toHilton Beach by the Sea Cadet training brigantines‘Pathfinder’ and ‘Playfair’.

We didn’t find out until a few days later that there wasanother, untold chapter to the story!

While visiting the ships, Donna and Dennis Morin, owners ofthe Dry Dock restaurant, learned that that the youngcrewmembers had been living on a somewhat limited diet, and were almost desperate for some ‘real food’. Donna andDennis invited the crews of both ships to join them at therestaurant for breakfast, and their wonderful offer wasinstantly accepted by the eager, ‘starving’ teens and their adultofficers.

The appreciative teens repaid the Morin’s kindness by givingthem a hand-written card of thanks, plus some commemora-tive tea shirts, to remember them by.

But the Morin’s kindness didn’t stop there. Some of the teensappeared unwell when they arrived at the restaurant, soDonna and Dennis loaned the officers their minivan, to takethe ailing crewmembers to Matthews Memorial Hospital for acheckup.

Thank you Donna and Dennis, for giving the kids such agreat impression of our beautiful island and its wonderfulpeople!

‘Wabi-Sabi’ celebrates 10 years of uncommonexcellence!

“WABI-SABI is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity innature, of accepting the natural cycle of growth, decay, and death. It’s simple, slow, anduncluttered - and it reveres authenticity above all.” Tadao Ando

It all began 10 years ago as the brain-child of textile artists Mireille Gagnon-Moes, thelate Johanna Bischoping and multi-media artist Sandra Vosper. They set out to offer acompletely different art exhibition that embraced the Wabi-Sabi philosophy. Althoughthe show has grown immensely in the last decade, it has remained true to the Wabi-Sabi concept and ideal.

Today, the show has matured to a highly anticipated annual event and an integral partof our summer art scene. Wabi-Sabi attracts a large contingent of islanders, summerresidents, faithful patrons from both Saults and many American neighbours whosimply would not miss one of the summer’s finest art happenings.

The original core of 6 well-known artists represents a broad spectrum of media: TedAlleway (Blacksmith), Errol Caldwell (Wood Turner), Adele Hill (Clay Builder), AnnSuzuki (Batik Artist), Andrew Tiltins (Wood Whisperer)and Sandra Vosper (Multi-Media Artist).

Wabi-Sabi also offers the works of 14 carefully selected guest artists, who exhibit exclu-sive works in soapstone, clay, organics, textiles, leather, pottery, basketry weaving, rockpainting and wood.

The exhibition and sale will be held at the Old Town Hall in Richard’s Landing, St.Joseph Island. Hours are Friday thru Sunday August 6th, 7th and 8th,2010 from 10 amto 5 pm.

Be sure to experience the uncommon excellence of Wabi-Sabi!

Sam shows up at a revival meeting, seeking help.

“I need you to pray for my hearing,”he tells the preacher.

The preacher puts his fingers on Sam’sears and prays and prays. When he’s

done, he asks, “How’s your hearing now?”

“I don’t know,” says Sam. “I don’t go tocourt until next Tuesday.”

PC Doctorby George Skardis

Question: Why is my Xplornet satellite high-speed Internetso slow? Some days nothing works. No email. No Internet. Isthere anything I can do?

Answer: Call Xplornet Technical Support at 1-866-841-6001.Have your customer number handy, including correct billingaddress. Support individuals are very sticky about onlytalking to the account holder. You must have that personthere or you have to temporarily assume the missing identity.Level 1 Technical Support has an extreme aversion to routers.Do not mention or admit to using a router as part of yourhome network. The poor router immediately will be deemedthe culprit for all your satellite Internet woes, and you will betold to call the router manufacturer instead. Having troublewith an uncooperative techie? Hang up, redial.

Level 1 Xplornet Technical Support has the ability to diag-nose satellite receiver malfunction or misalignmentproblems. If your Internet speed has been restricted due tothe Fair Access Policy (FAP), you should be told detailsregarding alleged over-use and expected recovery time.

The Fair Access Policy (FAP) was meant to control the smallpercentage of satellite Internet users who over-use thisservice downloading music and videos. FAP has been restatedunder a new label, Traffic Management Policy. I recommendthat Xplornet customers go to www.xplornet.com to read thisarticle for a clearer understanding of why and how Xplornetmonitors and restricts Internet speed.

There are two Xplornet satellites: the older, original Telesatand the newer, out-sourced Hughes satellite. Older Telesatcustomers have a very small hour-by-hour limit that can bereduced significantly when technical difficulties arise. Hughessatellite customers are bound by a 200 megabyte limit per 24hour period. How easy is it to exceed the 200 mb limit andtrigger an Internet speed restriction? View 60 photos on aFacebook gallery: boom, sputter, sputter! View 10 YouTubeclips: into the penalty box! Download 40 music tracks: youare cut off!

Once the Hughes satellite 200 mb limit has been exceeded, full recovery to normal Internet speed occurs after 24 hours. For example, the youngsters in your home feast on Facebookand YouTube during the afternoon. By evening your usagelimit has been exceeded. Full recovery will occur tomorrowevening or 24 hours from now. Contact Xplornet TechnicalSupport if you suspect that your Internet speed has beenrestricted. Confirm when speed restriction will be lifted.Refrain from using your satellite Internet for the duration.Attempts to use Internet while restricted only protractspenalty period.

A newer, high capacity satellite is expected to launch and bein service late 2011. Yes!
