IntroductionWelcome, reader, to this anthology of short stories and poems on the common theme ofGold. The collection is the 2018 contribution by primary and secondary students fromschools in East Devon to the Heroes of the Jurassic Coast annual series of work, detailsof which are available at www.heroesofthejurassiccoast.org

This Budding Creativity arts project for young people was initiated in 2014 by membersof the Arts Society of Budleigh Salterton www.budfas.org and this year's title ‘Gold’was chosen in celebration of the national Art Society’s 2018 golden anniversary.

Followers of the series will be delighted to read the ongoing adventures of Peter,Caroline and Eddie and their dynamic sheepdog Bud together with stories and poemsreflecting our local community.

Only some of the stories and a few poems have been published here due to limitationson space but all of those submitted are available on the Heroes of the Jurassic Coastwebsite. Many of the poems will be displayed on boards around Budleigh Salterton overthe summer and early autumn 2018 together with murals painted by some of the schools.

The Hunt for GoldDRAKES C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL, EAST BUDLEIGH

Stopping for petrol, Debbie Carter drove her car into Staddonsgarage on Budleigh High Street and stopped. Eddie, Caroline andPeter (with Bud in the back of the car) noticed a mysteriouslooking store named ‘Another Man’s Treasure’.

“That’s a new shop. Let’s go and have a look inside Eddie,”whispered Peter. Eddie followed Peter out of the car and up thestreet to the shop. Caroline and Bud felt compelled to go along. They walked into the shop and after a quick look around, Peternoticed an old, tatty and dusty book in the back of the shop. Peterran to get it and showed it to the others.

“Look at this book – it must be magical. Let’s have a read,”Peter said with excitement. As they went to buy the book, theshop keeper warned them that something magical would happen.

“Let’s see what it does,” said Eddie.“Nothing, probably,” replied Caroline, ever the sensible one.But as they read further and further into the book, they felt a

weird sensation.Swoooosh!

Page 10:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

10

All of them landed with a crash. “I told you that it was amagical book!” gasped Peter excitedly. They looked around andsoon realised they were not in Budleigh anymore. Bud – filledwith curiosity – sniffed around finding himself on board the topdeck of an old, wooden ship.

“Wait…shhh…listen…down below!” whispered Caroline. Thechildren and Bud stood as still as they could. Listening carefully, their ears cocked, they heard gruff voices below them discussing ahunt for lost treasure.

“Yay! A treasure hunt!” shouted Eddie.“Shhhhh!” replied Caroline hastily, “they will hear us.”Trying to hold their breath and being as quiet as a mouse, they

crept across the creaky floorboards. Eddie whispered to Carolinein a loud whisper, “Can I have a biscuit?” Caroline ignored him.“Caro…Caro…Caroline!” demanded Eddie.

“No!” replied Caroline with a little bit of volume. Suddenly asinister figure appeared out of the darkness; it was a tall figure, towering above them. He stepped into the light, showing a mouthfull of rotten teeth, thick greasy hair, a hook for a hand and adevilish smile. “All hands on deck!” the captain called in a deep, spooky voice which sent chills down their spines. Two muscularmen rushed over; one grabbed Peter and Eddie, dragged them

11

below deck and violently shoved them into a dark and damp cell. Then the other man – who had a sword - led Caroline and Bud tothe plank for it was bad luck to have a woman or a dog on board, let alone both!

Poking them with his sword, he edged them along the plank, where they had no choice but to jump into the sea below. Therewas a big splash and Caroline was gone. Bud was a strongswimmer and scrambled his way up the short distance between thesea and the cannon hole. He squeezed his wet, sodden bodybetween the wooden edge of the hole and the cold, metal cannon. For the time being he was safe on the ship, but where Carolinewas, nobody knew.

KASPLOSH!!!! The water leapt up and crashed into Caroline’shead. Those pirates were so horrible, pushing her off their boatand into the freezing water. She drifted down the mouth of theAmazon River and soon a strong current swept her into the middleof the river. Suddenly, something brushed against her leg and a

long, pink snout peered up at her andthen it was gone. She felt the body ofthe pink river dolphin rise up so shewas sitting on him, and then thedolphin carried her up a thin estuaryoff the main river and north uptowards the country of Venezuela.Caroline wasn’t scared, she’d heard ofthese animals helping stranded sailorsand bringing them to tribal islands.

Hours passed until a small forested island appeared in the distancewith thin trails of smoke gliding up from the beach and soon shecould see huts. Caroline crawled off the dolphin and slowly

Page 12:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

12

plodded up the beach to where two children stood.‘’Jefe, Jefe ! ‘’ They yelled, and soon everyone came running

out to see Caroline. They slowly bowed down and got onto their knees as a tall man

strode down to her and welcomed her as if he’d known her all hislife.

‘’Come friend,’’ he said,’’ We’ll look after you. You can stayin my chieftain’s hut. “

Caroline stayed with the tribe and after a week she felt as ifthey were family. She ate with them, spoke to them and evenhunted with them. She’d even learnt a bit of Spanish. It was awonderful life, but the longer she stayed the more she seemed tomiss her friends.

Life, however, was not so wonderful for Peter and Eddie. Itwas dark and gloomy; they could just hear the faint scurry of ratson the wet floor.

“I’m staaarrrrrrrrrving,” moaned Eddie, as he started lookingfor an exit from the dark, damp cell which imprisoned them.

“I seem to recall it was your hunger … ’I want a biscuit’,”Peter grumbled.

”No! It was Caroline’s fault,” replied Eddie, “She’s the one

who shouted.”Suddenly Bud hopped down the stairs; Peter’s face lit up.“Bud,” he cried a little too loudly. In Bud’s mouth was a

dagger.“Sorry Bud, I can’t play fetch with you now,” said Peter sadly.“Wait!” exclaimed Eddie, “We can use that to pick the lock!”

And that is exactly what they did.A few minutes later the cage door swung open and the boys

edged cautiously out of the cell.“Stealth mode now,” whispered Peter to Bud.They followed the sound of snoring to the Captain’s cabin, and

then carefully opened the creaky door. They saw the captainsleeping in his chair with a bottle of rum hanging from his handand his feet up on the table. They grabbed their old book, whichhad been tossed onto the table, and tiptoed out. Eddie opened thebook and out of a hole in the cover slipped a map.

“Look,” said Eddie. Peter did so. The map, leading to anisland, was imprinted in front of him.

Peter knew what he had to do. Quickly and quietly he madehis way to the top deck. “Right I can do this,” he saidtriumphantly as he took the helm and steered the boat in thedirection shown on the map.

Through the darkness they sailed. After several hours, just asthe sun began to peep over the horizon, Eddie spotted thesilhouette of an island.

“Could that be the island, Peter?” asked Eddie, hopefully.“I’ve followed the map exactly to the degree, so it should be.”Before the pirates awoke from their drunken slumber, Peter,

Eddie and Bud, slipped over the side of the ship and into a small, wooden tender and silently began rowing towards the island.

Page 14:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

14

Little did they know, it was the very same island where Carolinehad been living for the last week with the native tribe.

When they could row no further for the sea was too shallow, they dropped the little anchor and stepped out of the dinghy intothe warm sea. No longer needing to be silent they ran, splashingas they did so to the long stretch of white sandy beach that edgedthe island.

To their right they saw several tribesmen, spear poles aloft, collecting the daily catch. Hearing the splashing, the tribesmenspotted Peter and Eddie and one of the men headed towards them.

“Friend or Foe?” whispered Peter to Eddie as the manapproached.

“Come,” said the tribesman, a wide smile on his face. They followed him up the beach to a small village, filled with

wooden shacks. In the middle of all the shacks there was a hut, larger than the others. As the tribesman shepherded them forward, they heard a familiar voice coming from inside the hut.

“Caroline!” the boys shouted whilst running towards the hut, their faces full of glee.

Caroline stepped out from the hut and was knocked to theground with a BANG! She felt a rough, wet tongue lick her face:it was Bud.

They sat around the village fire and chattered, all at the sametime, about what had happened to them since Caroline had beenforced over board. Fifteen minutes later they were still chatting,

“Here it is,” said Eddie, pulling the map out of his pocket. “It’sa little damp, but you can still read it.” He continued, showing themap to Caroline.

Everyone began to talk at the same time once again. All werefull of ideas for how and where their treasure hunt should begin.

Page 15:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

15

The chatterine was brought to an abrupt end as the chieftan raisedhis hand.

“Give that to me,” he said quietly and calmly.Caroline handed the map to him.“I recognise this,” he said, “I didn’t think it had survived the

tribal conflicts. “My father made this map, when he buried histribe’s wealth. He did not want invading tribes to claim it as theirown. This treasure is buried directly beneath my hut.”

As everybody hurried themselves towards the Chieftain’s hut tobegin digging, they did not notice what was happening out at seaon the pirate ship. It was not long before they were lifting an old, wooden chest from the hole they had dug. Slowly the chieftainopened the lid to reveal a glistening mass of gold coins, gobletsand gem encrusted jewellery.

“Oh my,” said Caroline.“I’ve never seen anything like that,” added Peter.Eddie for once was speechless.BOOM!!!! BOOM!!! The pirates, realising that the children

had escaped and taken their treasure map with them, wererecklessly firing their cannons in the general direction of thebeach and the village.

Several of the elder tribesmen left the digging and dipped theiroily arrows into the burning fire. The tips of the arrows wereinstantly set alight. They fired them through the air towards thepirate ship. Arrow after arrow they fired at the ship until satisfiedit was well alight itself.

As Peter and Eddie ran their fingers through the bright, beautiful gold, they had just found, Caroline sniffed.

“Can you smell smoke?” questioned Caroline. Peter turnedhis head to see the old, worn ship that the tribesmen had set on

Page 16:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

16

fire, sinking.“The ship is on fire,” cried Eddie.“We all know,” replied Caroline“The book,” shouted Peter and Eddie together.“If we don’t get the book, we will be stuck here for ever,”

moaned Peter.“We have to go back to the ship!” said Peter in a voice like no

other, pulling Caroline towards the water too.

They swam as fast as they could back to the ship. Bud was byfar the fastest and swam towards the cannon hole he had usedpreviously to re-enter the ship. The top deck was now fully alight, the masts and sails falling to the deck. All of the pirates hadabandoned ship and were floundering in the water around it.

“Follow Bud,” Peter managed to gasp. Helping one another asbest they could, the children scrambled and climbed their waythrough the cannon hole and back on to the burning ship which

Page 17:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

17

had once imprisoned them.Eddie jumped in the air, avoiding an orange, fiery ball. They

made their way across the bottom deck, which was gloomy andred with fire. The boys headed to where they’d left the book inthe captain’s cabin.

“I think,” said Caroline, “Our only way home is to write anending that takes us there.”

Peter nodded in agreement. They wrote that the four of them would make it safely home

for tea.Caroline, Peter, Eddie and Bud started to spin faster and faster

and soon they were back in the High Street Budleigh.“Well, we won’t be getting any praise for that story ending,”

laughed Caroline relieved to be home and safe, “Mrs Davisalways tell us that ‘And they went home for tea’ is not anacceptable ending!”

“I think in this case, it is perfectly acceptable,” said Peter.“And just the ending we needed,” added Eddie.

The Mystery of the Golden Lion TamarinLADY SEAWARDS C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL, CLYST ST GEORGE

Little did our ‘Heroes of the Jurassic Coast’ know whatadventures lay in store for them as their plane flew over theAmazon Rain Forest on the approach to ‘Eduardos GomesAirport’ close to the Brazilian City of Manaus. Below them -Peter, Caroline and Eddie could see where the two great rivers –The Rio Negro and the Rio Solimoes meet to form part of the‘Great Amazon River’. Known as the ‘Meeting of the Waters’(Portuguese) the two rivers join but do not mix and it is possibleto see both the clear dark water of the Rio Negro and the pale sandcoloured Rio Solimoes- flowing side by side. This brought backmemories of their adventure last summer on the swollen ‘RiverOtter’ and the ‘Missing Beavers’.

The children had been invited to join Danny Carter (Eddie’sFather) who was a keen Environmentalist and had just recentlybeen invited to do some voluntary work at an animal sanctuaryjust outside Manaus. In turn Danny had invited the three childrento join him during their summer holidays at the animal sanctuary.

It was over a 3 hour drive from the airport to the animalsanctuary on some very bumpy roads – very different from thoseof East Devon. Eventually they arrived at what would be theirhome for the next 4 weeks.

The animal sanctuary had originally been an old PortugueseMansion and Botanical Gardens which had been built during the‘Rubber Boom’ of the late 19th century - a time when BrazilianRubber was harvested from trees and then exported all over theworld.

In more recent times the mansion and gardens had been

Page 19:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

19

abandoned but then in the 1960’s it had been converted into ananimal sanctuary. Although the sanctuary was providingwonderful care and research into animal diversity – due to lack offunding there was the sad possibility of the project being closeddown.

For the first week of their visit the children helped Danny withthe many different rare and endangered species being cared for atthe sanctuary. It was during their second week they took sometime out to explore the surrounding Rain Forest and the banks of‘Rio Negro’. It was during this time that they made friends with alocal teenage girl called ‘Mariana’. Whilst walking one afternoonalong the river bank they found Mariana sketching some recentlyexposed carvings in the river bank of the river. Mariana explainedthat this year there had been a significant lack of rainfall resultingin a huge drop in the water level revealing carvings that werecertainly three to four hundred years old and had probably neverbeen seen since the Portuguese Explorers had carved them.

Mariana then explained that she believed that this was the firstof many clues that would eventually lead to some hidden treasure.

Page 20:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

20

Caroline instantly recognised one of the images in the carvingto be one of the rare animals in care at the sanctuary – the ‘GoldenLion Tamarin’ a small new world monkey. In the carving itappeared to be engraved on a gold coin. This coin was part of alarger carving of symbols including an arrow which seemed topoint at a picture of a waterfall. Mariana vaguely recognised thewaterfall to be that of the ‘Lion Water’ a popular tourist spot.

This was the start of the children’s new friendship andadventures into finding what could be a hoard of Golden Coins.

Over the next few days our Jurassic Heroes and their newfriend Mariana followed a whole series of challenging and strangeclues. These included the hidden tunnel behind the ‘Lion WaterWaterfall’ in which they found a key and key hole which activateda mechanism that diverted the flow of the water to reveal the nextclue. Another clue along the trail challenged them to climb up theside of a cliff using vines hanging from ancient trees. One of themost dangerous was snorkelling in a crystal clear lake where theyfound a bronze statue of an Aztec Deity holding a coin with thepicture of the Golden Lion Tamarin.

It was during the last 3 days of their visit that they found whatthey hoped would be the last clue and hiding place of the hiddengold. This clue was quite different from the previous ones in thatit appeared to be a map drawn out on a piece of thick sailingcanvas. Although the map had a few beautiful pictures it mostlycontained rows of numbers and short phrases. At first theyassumed that the text was Spanish or Portuguese but after someresearch the text appeared to be in Latin.

Once the children had deciphered the map they could notbelieve their eyes – for the map suggested that the golden hoardwas hidden in a tunnel below the very mansion that was now the

Page 21:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

21

animal sanctuary!During their friendship with Mariana they had often discussed

what they would like to do with the gold if they found it. Marianawas quite firm that any proceeds from the gold should help thelocal community and not be taken away. This gave Peter the ideathat they could use some of the profits to help fund the animalsanctuary – hopefully for years to come. Everyone was in instantagreement with this!

And so with only 3 nights of their holiday left they invitedDanny (Eddie’s father) to join them to search for what they hopedwould be the resting place of the golden hoard which had lainhidden under the mansion for centuries.

What had appeared to be an old wine cellar was now used forstoring animal food and supplies. It was under a line of almostfaded Latin text chiselled into the wall that they found a loosebrick that acted as a door handle to open a revolving wall leadinginto a completely dark and damp chamber.

Then using one of Danny’s powerful torches its beam locatedan overturned chest in the far right hand corner of the chamber. Totheir absolute dismay the chest was empty!

The Great Idea

On the penultimate evening of their visit and feeling still quitelow - the Jurassic Heroes invited their friend Mariana to a musicalconcert by a famous classical guitarist at the grand opera house.Even though Mariana had lived in Manaus all of her life she hadnever been to a musical concert before. Soon the disappointmentof not finding the gold was left behind and she was looking forwardto her first experience of hearing a world famous guitarist perform.

Page 22:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

22

It was during the performance that Peter came up with one ofhis most creative ideas.

After the concert Peter full of excitement revealed to hisfriends how they could raise some money for the AnimalSanctuary. They could compose and record a song about the plightof the animal sanctuary and post it on the internet with a requestfor donations to be sent direct to the sanctuary – they could evenuse some of Marian’s sketches of clues as a film to the song.

Back in Devon our Jurassic Heroes teamed up with localschool children to compose a song in aid of the animal sanctuaryusing Mariana’s sketches as a film sequence to match the lyrics.

Once on the internet and with some clever advertising fromEddie’s parents the song had collected enough donations to fundthe animal sanctuary for at least another 5 years.

Our Jurassic Heroes are still in touch with their new friendMariana and hope that maybe next summer she will be able to

Page 23:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

23

come to East Devon and explore the river Otter and the JurassicCoast and who knows maybe share in an adventure of PirateGold!!!

“Over here!” demanded Caroline,“I’m getting VERY hungry!” exclaimed Eddie,“Get 5.2 metres away, turn left 45◦ and side-step to the right for

3.6 seconds please Eddie,” shouted Peter. The three children were playing an intense game of football

against Bud, Peter’s black and white collie dog. Peter’s gardenwas very small with trees and bushes and many other plants thechildren were unsure of; but just enough room for football.

The mid-day sun was shining down. The children lovedspending time in this garden – its over-grown corners remindingthem of the rainforests they had learnt so much about at school.

Caroline was the adventurous type and loved playing games inthe garden with her friends. Eddie was a very friendly boy whonever gave up on his dreams and or his passion for food; andfinally there was Peter – a smart and clever boy who loved mathsand always did his homework.

Unexpectedly, Bud turned his headtowards his kennel. Sitting on the grassin front of the entrance, was a shiny, golden frog. Bud walked over to thelittle frog and sniffed – and sneezed, the power of which forced the unusualamphibian straight into the kennel.Peering in, Bud could see that the froghad disappeared. He followed him in,just as a spark of light shot across thekennel.

Page 27:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

27

“What was that and where is Bud?” cried Caroline, walkingover to the kennel. There was another flash of light. “Oh no! Budhas disappeared!” she exclaimed.

The boys rushed over to take a look. They looked at each otherand an idea dawned on them. They would have to go through thekennel to have any chance of finding Bud. Grabbing her drone,Caroline followed the boys and soon the all the children haddisappeared.

Coming through the dusty dog kennel, following the brightyellow frog, the children found that they were in a beautiful, tropical rainforest. They stood there – silent; Caroline with herdrone, surrounded by tall trees swaying gently in the soft breeze.

“Send up your drone to see where we are Caroline,” remarkedPeter.

“Yeah, see if there is any food,” Eddie mentioned, because asalways, Eddie was hungry. Fancy thinking about food when theyhad just been through a magic portal!

Meanwhile the camera on the drone had picked up the prettiestpicture. Colourful flowers - pinks, blues, purples, yellows and the

Page 28:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

glorious sunlight reflecting off the light green leaves rustlingtogether. The chorus of deep waterfalls; the harmony of the birdschirping. It was so peaceful; you could hear the black and yellowbumble bees buzzing in the distance. Rivers trickling. Treesswaying. Flowers blooming. This was the most exotic place thechildren had ever seen. The camera suddenly picked up on thefrog again. “I think we should follow it,” commented Peter. Theyall agreed and decided to follow.

Following the glossy yellow frog, they suddenly saw a strangefigure in the distance. Who was it? When they came closer, theynoticed he was a scientist.

Hello,” said Peter hesitantly.“Could you tell us about this frog?” Caroline asked. “I’ll take it

back to my lab, it looks very interesting!” exclaimed the scientist.“Before you go, what’s your name?” queried Eddie. “D.J.,” he

answered.Just to be clear that the children were

happy for him to take the frog, D.Jasked again. The children agreed andarranged to meet him in an hour’s timeto find out more about their little goldenfriend.

As the scientist was running away, thechildren started to wonder if they couldtrust him. There was just something abouthim that didn’t seem right.

Turning round to leave, they realisedBud was gone. Looking ahead into the forest they could see hewas following the scientist. Without saying a word, the childrenslowly and carefully followed as close behind as they could

Page 29:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

without being seen. Something was wrong.Through towering trees and across flowing streams, the

children were still close behind when DJ stopped. It was almostlike he knew the children were following him, thought Eddie. Hestarted to look around, the children jumped behind a big bulkytree. Suddenly, with a bang and a crash, a dark black laboratoryappeared. DJ went inside with Bud just behind. With a big loudcrash, the door slammed just before the children could move.

“Bud’s in trouble,” exclaimed Peter. As the children were panicking, the scientist was looking at his

frog when he heard Bud. He pretended he didn’t see and got acage out. Then he quickly grabbed Bud and locked him in a cage.Perhaps this four-legged pest could help scratch the gold from thisprecious tree-frog. Then he would be rich!

The three anxious childrenstepped up to the bright, whitemetal door of the scientist’sspine-chilling lab. The bolteddoor, which was covered inthick, long green ivy, could notbe unsealed despite thechildren’s desperate attempts. They pulled and pulled, until

Caroline came up with the idea to look for another entrance. Theyscoured the area. The three searched and searched until Peterheard some loud frog noises. “Hey, look at these gold…” He wasstopped. The bolted metal door that was shut a minute ago slowlybegan to open. Caroline, Eddie and Peter stumbled up to the door.Hesitantly, they went in. The lab was full of computers, tabletsand lots of cameras. From floor to ceiling, were row upon row of

cages - each filled with wide-eyed terrified creatures of therainforest. But mainly frogs - hundreds of frogs, each in their ownlittle container. Eddie looked like he was going to say somethingabout food. Whilst they were having a group discussion Eddiebutted in and said, “I am a bit hungry, I might go and have one ofthose frogs because they might be chocolate a bit like in HarryPotter.” “Eddie, don’t eat them – they’re poisonous,” said Peter.

Their skin looked torn and sore. Their golden flakes had beenscraped off and had been placed in a large transparent container inthe middle of the floor. Then something happened that you wouldonly see in a horror film...

The door swung shut behind them. The children werepetrified. But then Peter pointed out that in front of them was along, wooden, tall stairway. They started to go down but they allsuddenly jumped as they heard a voice.

“Who are you?”The children looked around; they didn’t have a chance to run

before they were tied up.D.J left the lab after tying the children up. They were left

standing against a big, white, metal pole which was veryuncomfortable and very painful. As Bud was sitting in a cageopposite them, he was beginning to feel worried and scaredbecause he could see his friends in danger. He realised he could fithis front paw between the gaps of the cage and pull back thesliding bolt that was keeping the door shut.

He jumped down and went over to Caroline and started tochew the ropes. When Caroline was free, she then untied the otherknots; she had learnt how to do this in the Girl Guides. As theywere about to leave the lab, Bud barked and all of the childrenturned around and they realised what Bud wanted them to do.

Page 31:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

Quickly, they went over to the cages and unlocked all of them andreleased all of the animals, who hopped and ran - free at last!

“What are we going to do with that scientist?” said Peter.“He’s using these animals to make money and cause trouble andthat is the last thing we want.”

D.J the Scientist appeared in the doorway looking shocked.“What have you done?” he gasped. “My precious creatures.

Where is my gold?”The children moved towards the container so that he couldn’t

grab it.Peter boldly took a step forward. “This stops now!” he

commanded. Bud, assisted by the other creatures, pushed anothercage forwards and swiftly, DJ was trapped inside it.

When the children looked at the cage, two familiar faces hadappeared in the lab - Gwen (ex-chief of the Secret IntelligenceService) and Agent Smith (an old ‘spy’ friend of the children’s).

Gwen took one look at DJ and said, “Don’t worry, we’ll handlethis. We have been after him for ages.”

And with that, the three adults disappeared.“Ummm,” said Eddie. “How do we get home?”“Same way we got here,” said Caroline and she lead the two

boys back into a cage. On all fours, they crawled to the back. There was a bright flash of white light and the children alsodisappeared.

One early summers morning, Peter, Caroline and Eddie allwoke to the sound of seagulls except for Bud, the dog. At eightthirty they were all dressed and ready, they tumbled down thestairs for breakfast. Once they had packed their bags to go onholiday, they heard a knock on the door. It was Caroline’s Mum,Georgie. She came to pick them all up to take them to the airport.Twenty minutes later, they were at the airport, where they metPeter and Eddie’s parents. Suddenly, there was a loudannouncement. It said that airplane 365 is now taking off. After itwas finished, Bud wouldn’t stop barking, no matter how hard theytried to stop him.

When they arrived at Smugg Lagoon Tropical Holiday Park, they went to the reception to get their key cards. After they wenton a hunt for their huts. Bud started to bark at a very strange bird. All of a sudden, Caroline blurted out that it was a rare peregrinefalcon. She was so excited she sprinted into her hut to fetch hershiny new camera. But when she came out again, she couldn’tfind the bird or her friends. It was unusual for them to run off shemuttered to herself. In the corner of her eye she saw peoplestanding near the Golden Volcano. Caroline noticed it was Peterand Eddie and they started to run frantically to her. When theyreached her, they were shouting ‘

‘Bud is lost, he ran off!’ Caroline was really upset ‘We have tofind him before it gets dark’. Eddie said, ‘This isn’t a very goodidea’ Peter was really scared and they all decided to go back to thehuts to get Bud’s lead and treats.

Page 35:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

Caroline said, ‘I know, I have an idea, we will use one of histreats to make him come back.’ She tried to leave a trail. and alsothrew them up in the air but neither worked. Suddenly, Eddieheard a loud noise coming from the volcano. ‘I don’t think itsounds very good’ he said. All of a sudden, Peter heard awhimpering ‘Its Bud! Its Bud!’ said Peter. They all ran down tothe spot where they could hear the noise.

When they finally found him, he was whimpering loudly, hisleg was stuck in a trap door. Peter was so happy he’d found Bud.Straightaway, Caroline put him on his red patterned leash. Petersaid ‘I don’t want to go down that ladder’ ‘I don’t like it, its dark’said Eddie. So, they climbed down the ladder and started walkingslowly down the dark mysterious tunnel. To their surprise at theend of the tunnel was a titanium door. ‘How are we supposed toget past that?’ said Caroline. ‘I know, I can hack the code’ saidPeter. ‘Okay’ said Caroline.

‘Woof’ barked Bud.Half an hour later, the door opened, and they crept into the

huge thing. ‘Where are we?’ asked Eddie with an echo behindhim. Suddenly, Peter went around touching all the bumpy, wet, slimy rocks. ‘We’re in the Golden Volcano’ shouted Peter ‘lookhere, look at this. It’s all volcanic rock’.

‘What about this rock?’ said Eddie. ‘That rock doesn’t lookfamiliar, its golden’ said Peter. ‘wait, aren’t we in the GoldenVolcano?’ said Eddie ‘it might be related to gold’. They crackedopen the rock and gold flew everywhere like a fluttering candlelight.

Caroline pulled out a bag from her pocket. They all started tocollect the shiny, shimmering gold and put it in the plastic bag. When they had finished picking up all the gold, they snuck out of

the volcano and climbed up the rusty old ladder out of the tunnel.‘We’d better get back before our parents notice’ said Peter.

They all started to go to their huts before the sun rose. When theygot to their huts, they hid the gold under Caroline’s bed.

The next morning, the sun rose brightly above their heads. Justas they were walking to the turquoise-blue lagoon, they told theirparents what has happened and their parents told the owner of theisland who said ‘I would like to reward them at 2.00pm sharp.’

They were so happy Eddie started to dance, then Bud trippedhim up and Eddie fell over. When it was finally 2.00pm, theywent to the meeting point where the two tall palm trees stood. They all got rewarded with a blue rosette, even Bud, and an extraweek’s holiday at the one and only Smugg Lagoon TropicalHoliday Park. They gave all the gold to the park. A week pastand they missed the adventures they had had but they had afeeling it would happen again.

Bud found a rusty old metal compass, they kept on hiking thenthey saw four diamond covered doors each shouting their namesloudly. The compass pointed to the third door. They thought longand hard. Peter said ‘Candle’ and the compass told them to gowest.

They got to the end and there was five dark misty pathways. The compass pointed north. As there were two ways to go, theychose the left.

Caroline fell down a hole of plain, dark nothing but it was justthe exit to the fossil colour cave under the hidden sink hole madeof corn yellow sand. They found another secret exit and allclimbed out hoping it wouldn’t happen to anyone else.

‘Look!’ cried Caroline pointing into the crystal-clear sea. Therewas a shoal of mackerel that glinted golden in the sunlight. ‘I’dlove to be down there with them!’ sighed Caroline wistfully. ‘I’vegot snorkels! ‘exclaimed Peter, pulling a pile of snorkels out of the

back of his boat. ‘’What about sharks? Or j-j-j- fish?’ cried Eddie.‘You’ll be fine!’ said Caroline exasperated. ‘Besides, the type ofshark around here is a Basking shark.’ ‘They’re huge……’ beganPeter. ‘Peter! Not helping’ cried Caroline reproachfully. ‘Oh,come on, Eddie’ groaned Peter. ‘Fine, but if I get eaten, it’ll beyour fault’ said Eddie, looking worried.

Five minutes later……… Splash! Caroline jumped into the icycold water with her sea-green snorkel on. Splash! Peter and Budleaped, Splash! Eddie slid in and immediately began to panic.‘Calm down, Ok? Deep breaths ‘soothed Caroline. ‘Woah!’spluttered Peter, bursting out of the water.’ You have to go downthere! It’s incredible!’ ‘O-o-okay’ muttered Eddie, lookingslightly sea-sick.

As soon as they dived under, they were in an utterly differentworld. Instantly, Caroline spotted a jellyfish, but kept it quietfrom Eddie. Peter waved at Caroline to get her attention, thenindicated that they should follow the jellyfish. Caroline didn’tknow why, but it seemed like the right thing to do. When theywere deep down, they saw an intricately carved wooden chest. They signalled that they should open it and when theydid………….

In the chest was a huge mound of glittering gold. Gold chains, rings GOLD, GOLD, GOLD! Instinctively, Peter reached out ahand to touch a gold coin. No sooner than he had brushed his palefingers against it, than they were sucked into a whirlpool ofcolour. They awoke down a dark alley in a bustling town, the firstthing Eddie and Peter heard was a shriek from Caroline. ‘WHATAM I WEARING?’ Eddie gasped at her. She was wearing anankle length pink dress with lace petticoats and white pixie boots. Her dark hair was done up with sharp pins. Her horror was cut

short with laughter. ‘What are you wearing?’ she cried. The boyswere both wearing ugly brown shorts and grey V-neck jumpers. They also wore hats, ‘The sort Victorians wore,’ Eddie gasped.‘Peter, where are we?’ asked Caroline. ‘Well’ said Peter, grabbingBud’s collar ‘by the looks of it, we’re in pirate times.’

Ten minutes later, Eddie was pacing up and down.‘Whatdowedo? What do we do?’ he yelled. ‘Well, judging by thelast time we went back in time, we need to get back to exactly thesame spot where we were when we vanished.’Answered Peter.‘which means….’ Started Caroline ‘We have to becomestowaways?’ ‘Yes’ said Peter.

As they left the alley, they saw that they had come out onto adock. At the end of the wooden planks was a magnificent ship.On its side, glinting in the sunlight, were the words The BlackPearl.

‘Excuse me, sir, but where is this ship headed?’ asked Peter.’The Jurassic Coast’ replied the man. ‘Perfect’ breathed Caroline. The three of them turned away chattering excitedly, ‘This is it! weneed to get on board this ship!’ cried Peter. ‘How?’ asked Eddie.‘Easy.’Answered Peter. ‘All we have to do is wait until no-one islooking, then climb in that hole there’ he pointed at a hole where acannon was clearly meant to go. ‘Then find somewhere to hide.’‘O-o-okay’ gulped Eddie. ‘I’ll look out.’ declared Caroline.‘Hang on, Go! Now! Go!’ she yelled. ‘What?’ gasped Eddie.‘Coast’s clear! go!’ yelled Caroline.

They sprinted out onto the edge of the dock. Caroline gotsome disapproving looks from passing women as she lifted herskirts. Peter took a flying leap off the mouldy wood and landedon a rope hanging limply form the ship. He climbed into thegaping hole in the old ship. Caroline saw his face in the hole. He

Eddie was shaking as Caroline and Peterpulled him and Bud into the boat.

‘Everyone ok?’ whispered Peter. ‘Yes’ whispered Caroline andEddie. ‘Let’s go then.’ They turned around……… and walkedinto a huge, muscled man. ‘Well, well, well.’ He snarled ‘Whatdo we have here?’

‘Please, sir, please!’ cried Caroline, ‘Let us go’ ‘I am CaptainSparrow, I do not let snivelling children sneak on board my ship’roared the man, dragging them up on deck. ‘Captain coming!’yelled a crew member. In a flash, every man on deck stood in twolines, saluting Captain Sparrow. ‘Hello, lads, I’ve got a couple oflads, er, and ladies. Tie them up and we’ll deal with them later’.Meanwhile, Bud was barking at the pirates. ‘Boys’ whisperedCaroline. ‘I have a plan’. ‘Ok’ muttered Eddie.

Two men tied them to the mast with steely rope. Carolineshook her head. Three sharp pins fell into her hands. ‘Yes! Here,Eddie, Peter, use these to cut the rope’ whispered Caroline peeringover the side. There was a tiny, shivering jellyfish. ‘Peter, wehave to follow it!’ cried Caroline. ‘What! NO! NO!’ Splash!Caroline pulled Eddie into the depths. ‘Hold your breath’ criedPeter and they dived. Miraculously, there was the chest! Theyheaved it onto the boat, opened it and touched coin. BANG!

One sunny day, two brothers were paddling out in the aquablue sea. Eddie, the youngest of them saw it first though theydidn’t know their lives were about to change. A small rift in therocks, big enough for an adult to fit through. Instantly, George(Eddie’s brother) swan downwards straight through the gap.

‘Wait for me!’ Eddie wailed. Their dog, Bud waited for Eddieto disappear under then darted under, excited. In the rift, there wasa cave full of water!

‘Would you look at this place.’ George exclaimed gasping forair. At the end of the cave a beautiful golden treasure chestshimmered in the sunlight.

‘Let’s open it!’ Eddie decided, though he didn’t think it was agood idea.

As he peeked in, they saw some amber coloured coins fading inthe darkness. It was satisfying. As Eddie scrambled through thechest, he felt something scrape his hand.

‘Ouch!’ raged Eddie unhappily and darted backwards in fright.‘What was that?’ George said under his snorkel mask.

Breathing heavily, Eddie exclaimed. ‘I’m not sure, I think itsdefinitely a sharp object’

George looked back into the cinnamon treasure chest and founda crusted gold key.

Page 42:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

‘It’s a key’ George tried to say under the pressurising water.‘Let’s take it’ Eddie decided though he didn’t know what’s tohappen to them.

Under the bubbling water George, Eddie and Bud protected thegolden key in the dim light. George checked his important airmonitor quickly, going down. George noticed his air tank wasbursting, He signalled to Eddie and he checked his. It was onlyfive litres down.

‘Help!’ George cried mournfully in the deep water.‘Let’s go quickly before its too late!’ and they set off

swimming, not sprinting but not knowing the more you swim theharder it gets and the harder it gets the more air you use! In thecobalt water, George, Eddie and Bud (still holding his breath)were metres away from reaching the surface.

‘Nearly there.’ George said, He suddenly imagined his vital airrunning out and drifting into the darkness not knowing what’sdown there. He might not have been the first, no-one knows, butstill he’s alive rushing. Eddie was starting to get tired.

‘Slow down’ he shouted but George didn’t listen, he carried on,then suddenly, he was out bursting for air! Afterwards, Eddieslowly came out after him exhausted.

‘That’s better’ George giggled and smiled. ‘Let’s go home now’said Eddie and with that they took their olive-green swimmingkits and wondered what does the key really do?

In George’s heated tortilla brown house, Eddie took their keyout of his sealed pocket.

‘Should we try it out then?’ ‘We can’t just keep on hidingthings, you know what you’re like’ George muttered.Surprisingly, Eddie was already checking doors in their housewith the golden key.

Page 43:  · “Yay!A treasure hunt!”shouted Eddie. “Shhhhh!” replied Carolinehastily,“theywillhearus.” Trying to hold their breath and being as quietas a mouse, they

‘They all work for some reason’ Eddie called, surprised like aVenus fly-trap in the open air.

‘Let me try. It might just be you’ George said enthusiastically. So, he strode over to the curious Eddie waiting for George until hecame slowly over.

‘Let me try then’ said George wonderously not knowing how tounlock an oak plank door. As he tried to open the door, it worked!Surprised, he took the unfathomable key out of the resin coateddoor and replied.

‘I can do it too. This open just about every door in this house!’George called happily like a sun shining in the burning heat.

That night George was suddenly awoken and woke Eddie up.Mournfully, he struggled out of his feather soft bed. Bud stayedbehind wearily in his jaded sleep. As George and Eddie propelledslowly down the steep steps suddenly they heard a funny StrictlyCome Dancing theme tune run through the lounge. Then it wentsilent……..

Down in the lounge, a raging sound saying ‘Testing, testing.One. Two. Three’ said an unknown person lurking in the TV.Darkness covered the relaxful lounge as George and Eddie creptinto the hickory brown room like a shadow. When they saw a baldheaded crazy bloke in an old looking room. He had a flamingocoloured hat with some initials saying M.M.

‘Ah, greetings’ said the confusing man.‘Sorry but who are you?’ said Eddie already scared of the man

but he wasn’t listening, he was fixed on George looking aroundhim trying to find something.

‘What are you looking for?’ George asked in wonder.‘Do you have it? The Key?’ the man replied. ‘Yes, why would

you want it? Its nothing to you’ George called back wondering

what he wants it for. Does he like collecting things? Who knows?‘I’ll find you and destroy you with my evil chickens’ He

laughed, and the TV instantly turned off.‘What was that about?’ Eddie asked‘Something about a ninja the key and chickens’ George replied.‘Let’s get that ninja? Before it’s too late!’ClimaxOutside, George heard the death-rattle of machine guns echo

through their three-storey house like a raging lion. Before Georgeknew it, an onyx black ninja with shiny chrome shoulders?snatched the golden key off him. Naturally, he yelled ‘Hey!’Although George was the fastest in his school, even he couldn’tkeep up! George leapt over the open-air window sill in hot pursuitof the ninja. When Eddie worked out what on earth was going on,he ran to the road shouting ‘Taxi’After a minute, a taxi pulled upbeside him.

‘Hello there, I am Elliott, the child taxi driver’ he gently said.‘where would you like to …..’

‘Just drive!’ Eddie yelled furiously in extreme irritation.Over their heads, George and the ninja were leaping from

house to house in the teal blue-sky dancing above them. Finally,George hit the mysterious ninja with a lamp post and it tumbled tothe ground. When they had caught up, Eddie and Bud unmaskedthe ninja. ‘It’s a robot!’ He exclaimed. Suddenly, a chickenpopped up from under the suit. ‘The mastermind was right’George laughed though it was no laughing matter as the crazychicken got up and pecked Eddie until he dropped the key. ‘No!’they shouted in sync. The chicken jumped down a very dark holeand gave the key to the Mastermind….

Suddenly, Bud came bounding over the mastermind but then he

Afterwards, the evil Mastermind ordered his deadly ninjas toimprison George while he tortured Eddie. Bravely, Eddiesuddenly felt an urge to save his friends from danger. As theMastermind took him away, Eddie suddenly said.

‘Do you want to play a game called thumb wars? Do you knowhow to play?’ Eddie asked not telling him that he’s brilliant at thegame.

‘Yes, I do. If you win you get the key, Bud and your brotherGeorge but if I win, I take everything.’ He replied, so sure that hewould win. In the Mastermind’s lair, Eddie prepared himself forthe following game.

‘Right then. Three, Two, one’ The Mastermind counted.‘One, two, three, four, I declare a thumb war. Five, six, seven,

eight, you will be a piece of cake.’ They both said, and they wereoff! Eddie had the upper hand. He took a grab but just missed bymillimetres. The Mastermind was struggling, and Eddie took onelast shot and got him! And with that, he’d won!

As the Mastermind promised, he released George and Bud whocalled the police while Eddie tried to get the key but failed.

Soon, a hoard of policemen hand cuffed the stingy Mastermindand vigorously stole the key from his very hands.

‘I’ll have my revenge!’ The Mastermind warned. ‘Eddie, yousaved us!’ George cried as Bud happily barked. And with that, they went home to party. Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

‘I wonder who that is?’ said Eddie.‘I’ll go and check it out’ George replied. When he opened the
