fairy can change from culture toculture and also varies greatlywithin different traditionalcontexts. Some would classifyall creatures of a supernaturalrealm as fairies, while othersreserve the term fairy todescribe only the more etherealand elegant of these fantasticalentities. Across the board, however, is the notion of fairiesas possessing powers andhaving an air of mystery.

A fantasyland of fair ies, gnomes, elves and otherwoodland creatures will take uptemporary residence in ourChanging Gallery from May 21stto October 16th, 2011. Delicateand romantic flower fairies, bothantique and modern, will alighttogether with more modernfairies and elves, includingRaven Pewzner’s very lovelylimited edition porcelain andcloth "Gothic fairies". Also, sureto help us shake off the winterdoldrums and get into the spiritof spring and summer will bewonderfully detailed antiquefairy paper dolls, prints, books, textiles, and much more. Well, isn’t it just natural that weshould “spotlight” what our culturecontinues to spotlight on a regularbasis, ROYALTY? With the mediafocusing on the upcoming wedding ofPrince William to the commoner KateMiddleton, we think it appropriate tofocus on our ROYALTY Exhibit.

Certainly it is nothing new that royalpersonages have been the subject ofpublic scrutiny. We love to be shockedby their antics, it makes them human, like us, though our expectations arefor them to be “superhuman” becauseof their stature.

Our exhibit of historical royalfigures, located on the second floor, gives even more insight into some ofthose who have been so scrutinized, gossiped about, written about,“cartoonized”, ridiculed, and held inhigh acclaim-many all at the same
