A Message from the Principal

Dear families,

The cold weather has arrived and our students are spending more of their lunchbreaks inside due to the

drizzle and bitter winds. It is a good time to remind parents that coats can be worn outside, as can gloves

and scarves. We do ask that scarves are tucked into school jumpers to ensure they do not get caught on

play equipment or are grabbed by other students during a game. Beanies can be worn too, but they must be

navy blue.

Foundation High Tea: A delicious afternoon tea was enjoyed by Foundation mothers and nannas last Friday.

The students and staff had prepared cupcakes, slices, sandwiches and other finger food and our mums and

nannas dressed to impress. The Foundation students entertained their guests with singing and dancing

before servering their mums and nannas some yummy treats. This was a lovely way to celebrate Mother’s

Day for our youngest students whilst also providing our Foundation mums and nannas the opportunity to

catch up with each other over a cuppa. I hope the students continued to spoil their mums over the weekend.

NAPLAN Testing: Yesterday, today and tomorrow, our grade three and five students will participate in

NAPLAN testing. These assessments are delivered to all students in years three, five, seven and nine across

Australia and serve two purposes. Firstly they allow schools to look at trends over a number of years.

Schools can reflect on student results and compare these to past years. They are used as one part of a range

of data pieces to determine the progress of individual students and of whole grade levels. Secondly, schools

look at the growth of students from grade three to five – did individual students progress by two school

years over this two year period?

To prepare our students for these assessments, they complete some practice tests in the weeks leading up

to NAPLAN week. Our classroom teachers ensure that students know how to fill in the answer sheets –

whether it be to colour in a bubble, write a number in a box or complete a multiple choice question. We

want our students to be as best prepared as they can be. However, we are also well aware that NAPLAN is

judged on how a particular student performs on three given days across an entire school year. There may be

circumstances that impact on a student’s ability to compete NAPLAN assessments to the best of their ability

– maybe they are unwell, or the dog is sick, or they are just super nervous. That is why we ensure that

teaching staff keep parents informed through put the entire school year of student progress. Our school will

receive the results of NAPALAN during term three. Once results arrive, they are photocopied with parents

receiving the original copy of each child’s individual results.

Kate’s getting

her hair

chopped off!!!

On Saturday 23rd May, one of our grade six students,

Kate Leavold, is getting 30cm of her hair chopped off.

Why you may ask? It is all because Kate is donating

her hair to be made into a wig for a child less

fortunate who has lost his/her hair.

Kate has been waiting patiently for her hair to reach

the correct length and the time has come. So, our

SRC have decided to support Kate by holding a Crazy

Hair Day on Friday 22nd May. Students can come to

school with Crazy Hair and donate a gold coin. SRC

members will collect the coins and we will donate

these to the Australian Alopecia Ateata Foundation to

further support Kate’s great effort. Kate promises to

bring photos in to share with us…. and no doubt we

will see the result the following Monday at school.

So remember Friday 22nd May is CRAZY HAIR DAY

Year 7 Transition Information

We have received a limited number of information packs and brochures from Whittlesea

Secondary College and Broadford Secondary College and these are available from the school

office. We strongly encourage all families to contact their preferred secondary college/s for

information on tours, open days, information evenings and scholarship opportunities from now

on to ensure you don’t miss out on any important information.

As part of our lunchtime clubs program, we are running a Pokemon Club.

So please bring along your cards to play (battle) other students at the

school. There is NO trading of cards allowed at the club and Thursday

is the only day that Pokemon Cards are allowed at school! This club

is supervised by one of our parents and also a teacher.

Equestrian Victoria would like to announce that entries are now open for the 2015 Peter Horobin Interschool State Championships. The event is held at Werribee Park during the school holidays starting 29th June for

5 days with 500+ young riders. This event is open to all Victorian primary and secondary school age riders and whilst many children have goals to qualify to represent Victoria at the Australian Championships in Sydney in

September, others may be new to equestrian sport and competition. All however come with the objective to

have fun and represent their school at this event. There are no qualifications required to enter

this event, everyone is welcome.

We also have a school parent who has offered to be our

inter-schools equestrian co-ordinator and if there are any interested children/ parents, she is happy to assist in anyway. Please contact the school office should you

Writing with Miss Adams 3/4J has been very busy this term composing some wonderful texts.

OPENING OFFICE DOORS

A bit different to the usual classroom news, Mrs Cole requested that we give a short update about what is happening in

the school office and a few kind reminders about office procedure.

Ros has moved into the corner office across from the Sick Bay so as to minimise distractions and ensure confidentially

of documentation. I am now the first point of office contact and will assist you to the best of my ability, however Ros is

still available to help if the matter is beyond the scope of my school knowledge.

Please make sure that forms and payments are returned in a timely manner, so that students do not miss out on

events. We aim to send out statements on a monthly basis and welcome you to query any transactions on your family

account. Please place due dates into your diary and keep a regular check on the coming events calendar in the

newsletter.

We would love to have the space to re-locate the uniform shop and be able to fill your uniform orders straight away,

however at the moment this is not a possibility. The current uniform shop is located in another part of the school and

we aim to fill orders placed within 24 hours, however due to daily time constraints this is not always possible. If we do

not have your requested uniform item currently in stock it will be placed on back order and sent out to you as soon the

delivery is received.

Please note that the school office hours are 8.30am to 4.30pm. Should you wish to contact the school outside these

times you will need to leave a message on our answering machine. Another alternative is to send us an email at

wandong.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au and we can direct this to the relevant staff member.

As you can understand a school office is a very busy place. We may not answer your phone call on the first ring, or

attend to you as soon as you arrive at the front desk, as the students of the school are our first priority.
