From the Minister June 2017

Blessed spring. Despite lots of April coolness, rain, even hail during May, it looks and feels like

spring has finally arrived. That lime-green color of newly emergent foliage seems to exist only during

early spring. While the daffodils have faded, trees and plants are in flower everywhere we look.

All of these are signs of new life, growth and beauty. Take the time to savor and enjoy them. This

is not a time to be taken for granted, as it might well be otherwise.

While we slow down to enjoy the beauty and richness around us, I ask that we each be

intentional in taking the time to savor who we have become and are becoming as a congregation. Please

notice the ways that we are building on the solid foundation that has been gifted to us from decades

past.

Our building, the place we can call home, is being painted, electrical wiring updated, we have

enhanced lighting in the sanctuary and a new roof over the front lobby. We’ve just purchased a new

riding mower to lighten the burden of maintaining our grounds. Have you noticed the gardens, the new

signage at the parking lot entrance?

You’ll soon be able to rest more comfortably on a new crop of chairs, which will arrive before

long. But lets not rest on our journey towards the Beloved Community. While we are healthy and in good

shape, the future calls us to continue the journey.

Blessings, Walter

President Column June 2017 I’ll be stepping down this month as President of the Board. The past three years have been an enriching, occasionally challenging, yet rewarding experience.

I would like to say thank you to the terrific Board members and officers I have had the privilege to work with. More broadly, I want to acknowledge the energy, creativity and commitment that so many people provide to make our UUFP a special place.

One of these special aspects, is that it provides us a venue to be of service to each other and to the larger community.

OUR ANNUAL CORPORATE MEETING WILL BE

HELD ON JUNE 11TH @ 12:00pm

The UUFP is a pretty supporting place to stretch yourself, and to take on a leadership role in something you may not have tried before.

I know that I learned, and grew, from my experience as President. Perhaps there is a stretch role that interests you.

For now, I will also enjoy stepping back into the “chorus”.

In Service, Paul Silverstein

This month the Board would like to give a big shout out to all those who helped on our very classy Spring Tea:

Roseanne Ashby, Ajamu Ayinde, Jane Bartik, Kathy Boone, Lyn Burnstine, Katy Corcoran, Cori Cumming, Larry Decker, Carol Elkins, Rachael Epstein, Nick Garin, Eloise Ginty, Bob Halliday, Eleanor Harmantas, Ed Hayes, Jon Hodos, Thea Jensen, James Joslyn, Joedy Kievit, Sabrina Kievit, Anne Lancellotti, Agnes Lobo, Len Marcus, Joyce Marra, Richard Mattocks, Carol Miyake, Fay Pacht, Laura Price, Sue Sciacca, Betsy Silverstein, Paul Silverstein, Merrill Sunderland, Maggie Thakkar, Maritza Veliz, Karl Volk and Yvette Yeomans

Note: June 18 will be our last

“official” service before changing to

lay-led services during the summer

months. We will celebrate our

traditional Flower Ceremony. Please

bring a flower (or more if you have

extras) that represents you and/or

your family as part of the garden that

we are. Immediately following the

service we will have a pot-luck picnic.

Look for more info to come.

WE CELEBRATE OUR MULTIGENERATIONAL CONGREGATION From our youngest (Kleio) to our distinguished eldest (Marty) and everyone in between, we are a congregation which spans the decades. At least once a month, we celebrate this with a multigenerational service. Sometimes the services are led by Rev. Walter LeFlore, at other times by Spiral Web, the Program Committee or the Lifespan Faith Development Committee. Whoever presides, the services are rich in content and feeling. Scan below for pictures of our last ‘multigen’ service – a tribute to spring’s renewing energy. All the generations among us shared the joy and hope of this season.

Hello from your Program Committee!!

Thank you all for your comments and interest! Please don't feel shy and leave us comments about services you have seen and services you would like to see in the box in the foyer!

We have an exciting Summer planned....although some dates are subject to slight shifts, and one or two additional presenters have to double check their schedules, we seem to be full! Do check on the UUFP website and on our Facebook page for up to date details, but at this

point we can tell you we are going to be hearing from members offering insights into poetry, life mapping, music, and philosophies both Humanistic and traditional Eastern.

So let us see you! And let us hear from you! This is a Committee bound to reflect the desires of this Congregation.

Yours, Sooozie Nowak - [email protected] (those are two initial zeroes...)

2017 SUMMER SUNDAY SCHEDULE

June 25 The Heart Motif in Wayne Norman Cochran’s Poetry - Wayne Cochran July 2 Ideas of the I Ching and Yin Yang - Carol Elkins

The I Ching is the oldest book in the world. It shows how change is constantly occurring as opposites, yin and yang, interact in dynamic ways. To us, the easiest way to understand the message of the I Ching is to appreciate how much meaning we get from stories. Carol hopes to demonstrate how this works in her presentation.

July 9 Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark: The Shadow in SoulCollage - Linda Curtis and Judith Knauss

Ignoring the dark parts of ourselves doesn't make them go away: sometimes it even makes them stronger. Find out how SoulCollage® can help work through the darkness.

July 16 What About God? A Humanist Approach - Conrad Schnakenberg July 23 The Sound Bath Experience - Jenni Love Hoyt

A Sound Bath can be an unforgettable sound experience for those who seek deep relaxation, rejuvenation and an acceleration of their inward journey. During our waking state, the normal frequency of our brain waves is that of Beta. Sound tools entrain the brain to move into the deeper Alpha and Theta brain wave frequencies. Time is suspended as you enter a world of vibration, sensation and experience. Once you’ve had your first Sound Bath, you’ll want more!

July 30 Goals and Dreams - Sean Terry and Steven Farrington

Goals and dreams are important: what are yours? In this engaging and interactive service, Sean and Steven will encourage us to explore our goals and dreams, talk about how to bring them to fruition, and share our personal stories.

August 6 Hiroshima: A Pilgrimage - Pat Lamanna and Richard Mattocks

In October 2016 Pat and Richard visited Hiroshima while traveling in Japan. On the 72nd anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on that city, they will recount for you what the saw, learned and felt during their visit. There will be songs as well!

August 13 Souls United of the Hudson Valley - Souls United August 20 A Map of Your Life - Jon Hodos

Maps can be useful tools with which to navigate the world. What would the map of your life look like? Where have you been, where are you now, and where are you headed? Jon will help us get our bearings.

August 27 Music Through the Ages - Mary Ann Osgood with the Madrigals and Guys Sept 3 Living UU Outside the USA - Rachael and Bruce Epstein

Join Rachael and Bruce for an exploration of UU fellowships and practices from elsewhere in the world.

Buildings & Grounds As the "regular" Fellowship year winds down, we have one more "regular" Buildings & Grounds Workday: Saturday, June 10, from 9 to noon. We hope you can make it!

You may have heard, the B&G Committee has developed a list of 85 projects that vary from "we need to do this" to "wouldn't it be nice to do this?" Within that list, there are different types of priorities, and the list does change as items are accomplished or added.

Please consider coming out to help on June 10, and learning what some of our projects are: some can be done at your leisure, depending on your availability; some would make great opportunities for your family and/or friends to do together.

We look forward to seeing you!

In faith, The B&G Committee - John Colacchio and Judith Knauss, co-chairs, Nick Garin, Robert Halliday, Eleanor Harmantas, Eric LaVigne, Len Marcus & Richard Mattocks

The Caring Circle is part of the UUFP caring community. Let us know how we can help

you and how you can help us. Thank you to all the members and friends who have sent cards, made a call, visited homes and hospitals, helped drive, cooked a meal, or done an errand for someone in our community during this past month! Caring Circle Coordinators: Beatrix Clarke [email protected] & Betsy Silverstein [email protected]

FUNDRAISING 2016 - 2017 Well, we are off to the races! The TAG SALE held on October 14 & 15, drew record amounts of "stuff" (so it seemed), good weather, a looong line of early birds and a steady flow of shoppers. Staging areas were nicely defined and organized. Our Artist-of-the-Month Gallery was cleverly camouflaged by Larry Decker, saving the artist and Karl Volk a ton of anxiety - they didn't have to remove or rehang!!!

This event always requires a great amount of energy, planning, "stuff" and, of course, volunteers. The challenge was met under the guidance of Eleanor Harmantas and Jane Bartik. The Tag Sale remains one of the top producers of income for our Fellowship. This year's event netted $5000 (+/-). WOWZER!

On November 8, voters coming to UUFP polling site, had an opportunity to purchase beverages, light lunch/dinner (hot dog or walk-away taco) and a variety of sweet treats. Our modest food court was WO/manned in 3 hr. shifts from 6:00 am - 6:00 pm. SWEET! The first Election Day Bake Sale sold a great supply of homemade goodies and brought in about $238 (+/-). 2017 Election Day is also likely to have a good turnout. Opportunity for a repeat performance!

December 11 at 3:00 pm, Mary Ann Osgood lead the Choir in an afternoon of show tunes entitled "The Sound of Music". Perfect for the Young and Young-at-Heart! Admission was $10/Students & Seniors $8. This "warm/fuzzy" afternoon of holiday pleasure brought in about $350.

Another BIG THING is our MARDI GRAS AUUCTION held on Saturday, February 25 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. This is truly a fun FUN fundraiser. There was an abundance of costumes, entertainment and food! $10 pp admission included treats, beverage, raffle ticket and bidding paddle. Over $4000 was raised from this year's event.

Our 2nd annual SPRING TIME TEA was held May 13. Lite Lunch, a variety of Teas and a Sweet ending was included in the $12 admission ($10 Seniors/Students). Last year's income was about $235. This season's event cleared a bit less. While we grossed a substantially greater amount ($1000+) there were additional expenses: PokJ ad $135, champagne starter $70, 20 new signs $250, outside servers/dishwashers $60. Food amounts are the greatest learning curve and can be substantially reduced next time around. We had twice the attendees as last year w/twice the amount collected at the door. The Boutique area was a big hit! 12 vendor spaces brought in $180 ($15 per vendor). The net for the Tea was about $170. A sizable number of visitors came from outside the Fellowship - community goodwill Priceless! We would like to increase that figure next year, too. Rumor has it the Tea was a diplomatic success!

UUNIPLAYERS date is scheduled for June 3rd. Ideas are afoot to add some "Hollywood" factors to this year's event: Red Carpet, Paparazzi, maybe some SWAG, etc. Details are in the making.

Although the ENDOWMENT FUND is a separate entity, there is a side benefit to our general fundraising. Here is an EndFund campaign Legacy Gifting update. A planned campaign is set for the beginning of September thru October 31, 2017. The original goal of $100,000 has been met. The additional amount of time will likely increase the number of commitments. The side benefit to UUFP is that upon receipt of documentation of any

gifts (cash or legacy) received up to that date will qualify for a 10% cash award via the generosity of the Shelter Rock Congregation Gifting Program. (There is also a timing extension update from UUA/Shelter Rock.) At the point our paperwork is submitted, we will qualify for $10,000 (or more) in unrestricted funds to be added to our General Fund. HOW EXCITING IS THAT?!!! Details will be part of Endowment Fund Report. Joyce Marra - Fundraising Development Co-Chair

Speaking of Books – For June 5th, our book will be Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An

Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown. Please bring suggestions of book titles for future meetings. We try to keep books at 300 pages or less with copies available in the Mid-Hudson library system and old enough to not be current best sellers. --Meg

Once a woman said to me: "There is no joy in our relationship," and I wrote this poem as "Part II" of "Reimagining the Peaceable Kingdom." (The Peaceable Kingdom is a Biblical reference to a time when the lion and the lamb shall lay down together):

The true joy of living may be derived from a genuine knowledge: Love is deeper than joy. Joy is like grass, dependent on nature. Love dwells in your deep wild rock dependent on you!

Be joyful that you are so capable of loving.

~Wayne Norman Cochran

The UUA has announced a new publication, Centering: Navigating Race, Authenticity and

Power in Ministry. The book is the product of a committee of the UU Minister’s Assoc.

(UUMA), which I co-chair. The book “centers” the experiences and perspectives of UU

ministers of color. We believe it is a unique and cutting edge book.

This program has been in place for decades in most areas of the United States as a way to fund growth in Unitarian Universalist congregations helping to establish new congregations, improve and expand structures, fund new staff and resourcing programming innovations. Clusters of congregations may also apply for funding for collaborative projects. Want to know more? Read our FAQ.

Individual Chalice Lighter Subscribers pledge to contribute three times a year when the calls are issued – and those faithful contributions add up to significant funding. Subscribe today! We are moving toward a Central East Region Chalice Lighter program beginning in the fall of 2017 replacing four individual District-based programs, and we need help from our congregations and members. To learn more please read the Better Together blog post on Chalice Lighters.

The Global Majority (Unitarian Universalist Ministries) Collective will be a cohort of multigenerational Unitarian Universalist people of color working to create innovative contributions toward the creation of a multicultural UUism. This group will work to amplify and cross pollinate the talents and skills of its members to create liturgical, cultural, and other resources to decenter whiteness within UUism. We invite you to bring your whole self and join us in building this vision! Participants must be able to attend our first gathering on August 17-20th in Detroit, Michigan.

Register here. The Unitarian Universalist Association and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee are excited to launch Love Resists, a joint campaign to protect both the values of our democracy and the humanity and rights of individuals and communities most at risk. Since the election of President Trump, more than 860 clergy members, 40% of UU congregations, and nearly 15,000 individuals have endorsed a Declaration of Conscience, pledging to stand on the side of love to protect the most vulnerable, defend core values under attack, and commit themselves to speak out and to act in support of basic human rights. Love Resists is the next phase in translating this declaration of values into action. Get involved by signing the Declaration of Conscience, exploring our resources, and taking action to support sanctuary and solidarity in your community. Visit www.loveresists.org to learn more, and share your stories of justice and solidarity with us using #LoveResists.

The 2017 Angus H. MacLean Award will be presented to the Rev. Patricia Hoertdoerfer, M.Div., at the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) General Assembly on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 10:28 a.m., during General Session III. A former Director of Religious Education (May Memorial Unitarian Society, Syracuse, NY) and Minister of Religious Education (River Road Unitarian Church, Bethesda, MD), Pat served the UUA in our Curriculum Development office from 1993-2005 and, later, as district staff. Pat's contributions to shaping UU religious education include her chapter, "Religion as Relationship," in Essex Conversations; her many consultations with religious educators in our congregations; and her work on the Family Matters Task Force. Her Sage-ing ministry, which she continues to this day, combines education, spirituality, and creativity in programs that empower others to find their spirit and express it in their lives. The Faith Development Office has published a series of small group ministry sessions designed for reflection, discernment, and commitment of faith at this moment in U.S. political history: A Call to Faith in Turbulent Times. Since the U.S. Presidential election, many Unitarian Universalists feel challenged by this moment in our nation's history. Four new, two-hour sessions by the Rev. Marta Valentín for adult small ministry groups ("chalice circles") help us discern the requirements of our faith commitments and values. The sessions use a standard "small group ministry" format and include readings, audio-visual materials, and questions for reflection New publications from the UUA - The following new publications are now available: Centering: Navigating Race, Authenticity, and Power in Ministry, To Wake, To Rise: Meditations on Justice and Reslience, Faith for
