St. John Fisher, St. Thomas More: June 22 From Robert Bolt’s classic A Man for All Seasons to Show me’s edgy The Tudors, Thomas More endears him-self s ll: lawyer-statesman of impeccable integrity, remar-ried widower and affec onate father deligh ng in a lively household—four children, a pet monkey, even a paid jest-er! And challenges s ll: humanist-reformer, yet champion of Catholic faith and papal primacy. John Paul II named him Patron of Statesmen and Poli cians, ci ng More’s generous work, both as a lawyer and in government ser-vice, on behalf of the poorest and most marginalized people of his me, as well as his promo on of educa on for all sectors of society. More’s decision for principle over poli cs, conscience over convenience prompted his final words: “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first.” Alone among Eng-land’s bishops, John Fisher dared challenge Henry VIII’s divorce and repudia on of the papacy. When the Pope named the imprisoned Fisher a cardinal, Henry thun-dered: “Don’t bother sending Fisher’s red hat here; I’ll send Fisher’s head to Rome!” Whose “good servants” are we first? Isn’t a right conscience worth the pain of stand-ing alone? Peter Scagnelli, © J. S. Paluch Co.

Family Connection

It is not only individuals who need reassurance about God’s love and protec on. Communi es need this reassurance as well, including the community of the family. Children rely on the confidence of their parents for this assurance. Parents can help the en re family’s growth in trust and confidence in God by witnessing ways in which daily family needs are entrusted to God’s care.

As the family gathers, distribute pieces of paper to each person. Tell them to write or draw ways in which they believe that God’s help is needed for each person and for the family as a whole. Each slip of paper can then be collected in a basket. Invite one member of the family to read aloud today’s Gospel, Ma hew 10:26-33. Recall together how well God knows your family and thank God for this wonderful grace. Conclude by praying together for each of the needs iden fied on the slips of paper. A er each need is read, pray together, “God, we trust you because you know us so well.” Conclude by praying the Glory Be to the Father. This prac ce might become a regular part of your family’s prayer. Set the basket in a place of prayer and encourage family members to add other needs throughout the week. Perhaps your family can pray for these things together during a family meal.
