From the General Manager

As we enter our spring time this year we are very excited to re-open the pool and Tiki Hut. The pool has undergone a repair of new Marcite and some other cosmetic upgrades. We are planning to have many events at the pool through the summer and

hope for great attendance. During the month of April we will feature entertainment on each Wednesday night with some of our popular acts returning to the club. On April 6th we will have Mike Ballastini returning, and on April 13th Pat Henry will be playing. Sequel will be here on the 20th and Katie Guglielmo will play for us

on the 27th. On the last Friday of April we look forward to Tom Arnold providing great entertainment during the seafood buffet. We would like to wish our seasonal members a safe trip back north and have a great summer. We look

forward to having everyone back in the fall. Please plan to join us for the Mother’s day buffet on

May 8th!!

Always at your service,

Summer’s Here! Many have been asking about our summer memberships, camps, and swim team, and I am happy to say that our pool is renovated and looks great! I anticipate our summer social membership to increase this year with this up-graded amenity. We do have a new swim coach, and on April 23rd you will have a chance to meet her, sign up for the team, order this year’s swim suit, and receive your practice and meet schedule for the season. Our Swim Team truly is a phenomenal way for your kids to have a healthy routine over the summer, make great friends, and great memories. For the older children is a great way to prepare for your school’s team next year!

As part of the swim team kick-off on the 23rd I will be inviting prospective members to meet our coach, see our pool and have fun—we will have a bounce house and fun goodies at the pool for families to enjoy. This will be a great day to bring your friends that may be considering a summer membership and show off your club!

We would also like to invite prospective golf members to meet with me and preview our course on April 23rd. Please let me know if you would like me to invite someone on your behalf who might potentially like to join our club this summer. You will see our camp information listed here as well. Our Camps have had rave reviews year after year so plan on bringing over the kids & grandkids for a summer of non-stop fun!

As always, please feel free to contact me anytime with questions or concerns and I will do all I can to ensure you enjoy your membership to the fullest. See you at the Club, Christy Dollins, Membership Director 727-867-2111 ext. 318 [email protected]

the end off eighteen holes. Eric got the match back to 2-Down with five to go, and then Mike secured the match

winning the next two holes for the margin of victory. Congrats to both players and thank you to everyone for

OUR GOLF COURSE HISTORY………..

A previous article attempted to briefly describe our course’s original layout and bring things up through 1967, when major changes were made to holes 6, 7, 13, 14 and 18. At

that point, the course’s water needs had been reasonably satisfied, no further alterations were contemplated. Our greens had been flattened and enlarged, becoming quite different

from architect Herbert Strong’s originals. The greens were resurfaced with then state of the art Tifgreen(328) Bermuda grass in 1968. The club made no architectural changes to the

course between 1967 and 1982. A significantly redesigned clubhouse opened in 1972 following a major fire in the fall of 1970. Membership numbers increased and club minutes

reference a growing number of suggestions for improving the golf course in one way or another. As the 1970’s drew to a close, the new I-275 was plowing its way south through St. Petersburg, interchange by interchange. By 1981 it was working through downtown. Construc-

tion of the interchange at 22nd Ave. S was ongoing and construction of the 54th Ave. S interchange was scheduled to commence in 1982. Late in 1981 the club was approached by

Pierce Construction, the principal contractor for the site work on this project, about the possibility of the club furnishing fill dirt by expanding our existing lakes or even digging new

ones. Dr. Dave Davis, former greens chairman and prime mover of the course changes in 1967, was acquainted with the principals at Pierce Construction. Dr. Davis already had

pretty well-formed ideas for the golf course which he thought would improve both its appearance and challenge. He had been a fine player for many years and was a student of

golf course architecture.

Dr. Davis made presentations to the Board, supported by Club president George Mitchell and greens chairman Dr. Rudy Weihe. Dr. Davis provided detailed drawings of proposed

renovations, hole by hole. Pierce Construction made a proposal in May and it was agreed that Pierce would use its equipment to dewater, deepen and enlarge existing lakes or

waterways on holes 5, 8 and 15. New lakes would be dug on holes 2, 3, 4, 9, 11, 12, 17 and 18. The contractor would purchase fill dirt, at the price of $.50/cu.yd. from existing

lakes and $1/cu.yd. from newly dug lakes. The Board, with president Mitchell leading vigorously, agreed to the proposal and Dr. Davis’ concept, provided that the receipts from fill

dirt sales would at least cover the total costs of all course changes. The agreement specified that all dirt for the interchange construction had to be free of roots etc. As upwards

of 200 trees and shrubs were in the areas to be excavated, this was a challenge. A substantial portion of the “impure” dirt was used to build the new tees and mounds.

Dr. Davis made drawings of each hole showing the proposed changes. Once the Board agreed with the plan, he set these drawings up in the clubhouse for membership viewing.

Dave had talked with pro Skip Alexander and several architects regarding changes to what he felt had become a comparatively bland, outdated course. You might remember that in

March, 1982 the Player’s Championship was held at the new TPC Sawgrass Stadium course…Jerry Pate winning, throwing architect Pete Dye and commissioner Deane Beman in the

lake at 18 etc. Dye’s design there really caught the golfing public’s attention. Dr. Davis felt that we should replicate #17 at Sawgrass on our 17th hole. It had been a solid par

three, 150 yds. from the front tees, 180 from the middle and 205 yds. from the back. The green was bunkered on both sides but there was no water then in sight. Dave’s idea

was to create the feeling of the Sawgrass 17th but less of its intimidation by making the green a peninsula, providing areas short and left of the green for less precise shots. By

October, what had been #17 was mostly a cavernous pit. Several ideas were proposed for maintaining rounds at 18 holes during construction. The chosen solution was to cut a

temporary green into the 16th fairway about 160 yards off the tee and #16 temporarily became a par 3. The remainder of #16, 300 or so yards, would be a par 4, total par 71

temporarily. Holes 8 and 9 would be changed significantly, number 8 by building a new green left of the existing(and present) one with its front abutting the pond which had been

there since the course’s inception but was now being greatly enlarged to run down the hole’s entire left side. Number 9 was to be changed even more dramatically with a new

green to be built on a hill created about 50 yards right of the existing green. The existing 9th tee would be abandoned and a new tee would be built approximately where the 8th

green’s back right bunker is now. This would make the hole a rather dramatic dogleg right and create an uphill second shot, about the only one in southern Pinellas County. As

these changes would require some time to complete, the existing 8th and 9th greens continued to be maintained. New back tees at holes 5, 8, 10, 15 and 18 were built and a

number of existing back tees were lengthened. A substantial number of trees had been removed as new lakes were dug and others were cut down as additional mounding was in-

stalled on several holes. Overall, our course’s back tee length was increased by almost 200 yards while the middle tee length remained virtually the same and the forward tee length

was reduced slightly.

Our new number 17 opened the first week of January, 1983 and the new greens at 8 and 9 followed at the end of that month. Digging continued into the spring. The club re-

ceived $380,000 from the sale of fill, which did pay for all the course renovations including irrigation, grassing, mounding, sodding of lake banks, entirely new greens at 8, 9 and 17

as well as the new and expanded tees. A profit of about $20,000 was initially projected but most of that was eaten up by miscellaneous costs of the project’s final completion. Gradually during 1983 members began commenting that perhaps some of the changes were “too much.” The new green at number 8 was “too long, too narrow, too close to the

water.” The new green at number 9 was “too high, with abrupt slopes that are hazardous as well as difficult to maintain.” Number 17 came in for some criticism as well, but

that one could not be undone. A noted Florida course architect, Ron Garl, was asked to render his opinion on the course changes. He complimented many but did express reserva-

tions about numbers 8 and 9 greens, 8’s problems being turf-related as the green was too low and too close to the water. 9 was too steep, up in the air, the sky its only back-

ground. The new tee recommended for number 9 had not yet been built and the previously-existing greens were still being maintained. That summer the Board considered the

options and simply abandoned the new greens at 8 and 9, and left 9 as the straightaway hole it had always been(the alternate forward tees on the hole’s right are still used today).

A bottlebrush and a couple of oleanders now occupy the area of the short-lived 8th green and you can still see the mound created for the 9th green, although about 5 feet have

been taken off of its top.

Dr. Davis had additional plans for bunkering changes and irrigation improvements but these were not implemented. There would be no more digging. Beginning in 1988, effluent

water provided sufficient, in fact sometimes overused, irrigation. Additional alterations have since been

made to the course, in 1996 and 2009, but the 1982-83 project contained our most significant renova-

tions. Without Dave Davis’ expertise and imagination and club

president George Mitchell’s determination renovations this extensive would not have been undertaken

or accomplished.

Tennis Talk…… The weather couldn’t be nicer for tennis. The winter and spring had some rainy

and cool days, but now it’s beautiful. This month the Summer members will start

to join. Please help welcome them to the club.

The Club Doubles Championship will be held Sat. and Sun. April 9 & 10. Please

save those dates. Men’s and Ladies divisions will be held with A, B, and C levels.

The Raymond James Super-Senior Grand Prix tournament was the best tourna-

ment ever. Over 275 very talented 55 to 90 year old players competed this year.

From our club John McMasters, quarter-finalist in the 60 singles, Brant Bailey, Tom Soule, Rich Norenberg, Jorge Alvarez and Jerry Ratledge all competed this

year. Andy Rae, first seed from Victoria, Australia, is the new champion of the 65

singles, unseating Larry Turville, who came down with pneumonia in the 3rd round.

Many of the players have written cards and emails thanking us for a well run tournament with kudos to all the helpful volunteers and club staff. Jerry and Suzi

Ratledge, tournament Co-Chairpersons, Vice-chair, Paula Briggs and all the

volunteers worked tirelessly getting sponsors for the tournament program, improving the grounds, serving lunches or assigning courts. Also, members Guy

Thibaut, Mark Friedman, and Steve Yost helped Courtmen Bobby and Alberto to

prepare the courts all week, which really helped match flow. Many thanks to all

that helped make this such a record breaking great event this year.

Our Summer Junior Tennis Camp for ages 4–18 will start on June 6 and will run

for 8 weeks to August 5 with a week off for 4th of July. The days are Monday
