Wimbledon International Music Festival 3

Welcome to Wimbledon for the 2014 FestivalI was most encouraged to receive such warm audience feedback after last year’s Festival which has spurred me on to raise the bar and continue to bring world-class artists to Wimbledon.

Last year we added nearly 500 people to our new ticket purchasers list, and we continue to fulfill our aim to extend awareness of the Festival well beyond SW19 to become the International Festival for South West London centered in Wimbledon.

But above all we continue to have wonderful response from our loyal core of Friends whose generous donations are a vital support for the Festival.

New this year: There are some exciting new additions to the Festival this year.

In response to the dozens of emails, CDs, invitations to concerts from budding young artists, this year we will be starting a series of FREE lunchtime concerts giving a platform to brilliant new generation artists.

For the first time we will be holding a public master class under the inspirational eye of the great viola player Lawrence Power as part of a Viola Day supported by the Tertis Foundation again giving a platform to four talented young violists.

We will also be extending our jazz offerings in association with Maggie Black Jazz Promotions, with the added promotional opportunity of being under the umbrella of the London Jazz Festival, which conveniently occurs during the Wimbledon Festival period.

‘War and Peace’: We are not alone in 2014 in our choice of theme - ‘War and Peace’. Coming at the end of the year I have tried to find an imaginative way of commemorating the centenary of WW1.

Haydn’s ‘Nelson’ Mass will feature in the opening concert given by The Academy Choir and Baroque Players.

There will be a performance of Stravinsky’s iconic work ‘The Soldier’s Tale’ in a setting inspired by another iconic work, Picasso’s ‘Guernica’. At the time of going to press it is hoped this will indeed be a fully staged version with narrator, actors, and dancers, but this depends on a production grant yet to be confirmed. Whatever the outcome the music will be performed by artists of the highest rank, including members of the Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Robin O’Neill. In the event that a concert performance only is possible (an exciting event in itself) there will be other glorious music to complete a full programme. Watch this space - or rather consult the web site for details.

Prokofiev’s celebrated ‘War Sonata’ No.7 will feature in the recital by Denis Kozhukhin, the young Russian pianist described as being the “leader of the pack of young Russians under forty”.

‘Anthems for Doomed Youth’, a moving collection of songs drawn from Russia, Germany, France, Spain, Britain and America, will be presented by four superb young singers, and Joseph Middleton, piano.

The brilliant guitar duo, the Katona Twins, will bring a programme of Spanish music interwoven with the poems and prose of the famous international writers who responded to the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War.

In their showcase concert The Yehudi Menuhin School will perform a variety of significant works by Debussy, Janacek, Bartok and Stravinsky, all composed during WW1.

The Festival ends with the Philharmonia Orchestra performing, in his 150th anniversary year, Richard Strauss’s masterpiece ‘Metamorphosen’, composed in the final days of WW2 as a memorial in response to the destruction of his beloved Munich Opera House.

But not all is ‘War! The Festival offers ‘Peace’ with Mozart’s ‘Exsultate Jubilate’, the Rachmaninov ‘Vespers’, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, and Beethoven’s final quartet Op.135 – and fun with ‘Death by Custard’ in the company of the Musicians of the Globe.

On the final Saturday there will again be a double bill, a ‘Schubertiade’ - two concerts of Schubert (seasoned with Mozart) with a Duo, a Trio, a Quartet, the ‘Trout’ Quintet, culminating with Schubert’s glorious Octet, performed by the celebrated Fibonacci Sequence Chamber Ensemble: and in between, a special themed Viennese Dinner at the Light House Restaurant - no prizes for guessing what might be on the menu!

Enjoy – food for the body, and nourishment for the soul.

and the Philharmonia Orchestra so we can hear here dazzlingimpressionist textures and atmospheres of music.

Is music an antidote to the city or is the city itself music?

Luigi Russolo, writing in 1913, in Milan said [1]:

‘Let us wander through a great modern city with our ears more alert than our eyes, and enjoy distinguishing between the sounds of water, air, or gas in metal pipes, the purring of motors which breathe and pulsate with indisputable animalism, the throbbing of valves, pounding of pistons, screeching of gears, clatter of street cars on their rails, cracking of whips, flapping of awnings and flags. We shall enjoy fabricating the mental orchestrations of the banging of shop shutters, the slamming of doors, the hustle and bustle of crowds, the din of railroad stations, foundries, spinning mills, printing presses, electric power stations, and underground railways. Nor should the newest noises of war be forgotten… We want to give pitches to these diverse noises, regulating them harmonically and rhythmically…. Every noise has a pitch, some even a chord, which predominates among the whole of its irregular vibrations’

He identified six families of noises:- Roars, thunderings, explosions, hissing roars, bangs, booms- Whistling, hissing, puffing- Whispers, murmurs, mumbling, muttering, gurgling- Screeching, creaking, rustling, humming, crackling, rubbing- Beating on: metals, woods, skins, stones, pottery, etc.- Voices of animals and people: shouts, screams, shrieks, wails, hoots, howls, death rattles, sobs.

He then built an orchestra of machines to reproduce these sounds on stage, mostly by turning handles.

In 1914 he toured the major capitals of Europe, meeting Stravinsky in Paris and performing at the London Palladium until his show was cut short by the beginning of the Great War.

A century later, musical performance includes voicing, beating and screeching, and the audience whispering, whistling, beating, and only occasionally roaring thunder or explosions.

‘the Soldiers tale’

STRAVINSkY’S DRAMATIc MASTERPIEcE

Composed in the last year of WW1, Soldier’s Tale is a dark Faustian fable about a deserting soldier and the Devil, who eventually possesses his soul. The soldier’s violin becomes a symbol of both the soldier’s soul and the Devil’s wiles.

Stravinsky described his ‘Soldier’s Tale’ as a theatrical work “to be read, played, and danced” by three actors and one or several dancers, accompanied by a septet of instruments.

At the time of going to press it is hoped this will indeed be a fully staged version with narrator, actors, and dancers, but this depends on a production grant yet to be confirmed.

There’s not the slightest mis-coordination, not in the wild rhythmic nightmare of Stravinsky and not in that most alive of scores, the music that does not have a single right angle, not a single straight line - La mer.” Music Web International

“Theirs is the most vivid and concentrated reading of The Rite, with highly nuanced playing in the quieter and slower passages, with orchestral colours clearly evoked and the pointillist detail ever audible…” International Record Review

Death by custard Ballads of gore, disaster, death and horror

MuSIcIanS oF the globe violin, recorders, lute, bandora, guitars and bass viol withJOANNE LUNN soprano

The 16th and 17th century English ballad-mongers chronicled the latest sensational stories on penny broadsheets - the pop songs and tabloid press of their day!

Then as now, readers relished every shocking and gory detail of the latest land and sea-battles, murders and hangings, alongside such catastrophes as the Great Plague, the Gunpowder Plot and the Great Fire of London. There was even a bizarre case of ‘Death by Custard’, when a wager went horribly wrong!

The stories ranged from the ghoulishly descriptive to the outrageously comic, with well-known and well-loved tunes often merrily at odds with their scandalous, scurrilous and sometimes horrific subject matter. For almost two decades the Musicians of the Globe, the associate ensemble of the Globe Theatre, have toured and recorded the music of Shakespeare’s world.

“I defy anyone not to be excited at the prospect of a concert featuring such numbers as “Cuckolds All Awry”, “The Queen’s Dumpe”, “The Wooing of the Baker’s Daughter” and “Tickle My Toe”. Art World

The SIXTEEN with HARRY cHRISTOPHERS conductor the voIce oF the turtle Dove THE CHORAL PILGRIMAGE 2014

A stunning programme of music from the golden age of renaissance polyphony with by English composers John Sheppard, Richard Davy and William Mundy. Mundy’s monumental work Vox patris caelestis, the text of which comes from the Song of Songs, can be considered as the culmination of the great antiphon tradition.

Sheppard’s musical style contains all the grandness of English harmonic invention. The programme includes his glorious seven-part work Libera nos as well as his sublime Gaude, gaude, gaude Maria.

Davy is the second most represented of all the composers in the Eton Choirbook and the mere fact that his music survived the Reformation is nothing short of a miracle. It is believed he wrote his monumental O Domine caeli terraeque in the span of a single day during his time at Magdalen College, Oxford. Harry Christophers says ‘Each one of these works is a real gem just waiting to be discovered by a wider audience. This music is part of our great heritage and I look forward to you joining us on this pilgrimage of discovery.’

What is the real gift - an extraordinary talent, or love?

alIcIa’S gIFt

JESSICA DUCHEN, narratorVIV McLEAN, piano

Following her sell-out successes at the Orange Tree in 2012 and 2013, and in tune with the introduction of our Young Generation Artists lunchtime series we have invited Jessica back to explore the world of precocious talents.

What does a family do to a talented child? What does the presence of a prodigy do to the family? And how on earth can she find the right teacher?

The topics of Jessica Duchen’s acclaimed novel Alicia’s Gift hold a perennial fascination for music-lovers, especially at a time when teacher-pupil relationships have been under the spotlight. Its story follows the piano prodigy Alicia and her embattled parents across the years from the discovery of her talent, aged three, to her participation in the Leeds International Piano Competition, when she must face harsh truths about herself, her guidance and her gift.

Author Jessica Duchen and pianist Viv McLean alternate extracts from the book with engaging illustrative works by Chopin, Ravel and Granados, among others. Viv demonstrates the normally unseen hard work of a trainee pianist, and the concert ends with a surprise that may require an extra chair at the piano. The Philharmonia OrchestraTHE PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRAROBIN O’NEILL, conductor and solo bassoon

Mozart, Symphony No. 29 in A major K201Vivaldi, Bassoon Concerto in Eminor RV 484Strauss, Metamorphosen, for 23 solo strings Mozart’s wonderful Symphony No 29 marks a significant turning point in his compositional life, showing a new maturity of technique and new depth of content. The opening movement is one of the finest in all his symphonies.

The Concerto for Bassoon in E Minor (RV 484) is generally considered to be one of the most successful of all Vivaldi’s concertos.

Generally regarded as one of the masterpieces of the string repertoire Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen concludes this year’s Festival theme of War and Peace. Written just weeks before the end of WWII the work contains Strauss’s most sustained outpouring of tragic emotion, mourning the loss of his beloved opera house in Munich and the destruction of German culture during ‘the twelve year reign of bestiality, ignorance, and anti-culture under the greatest criminals.’

Robin O’Neill is this year’s Festival Artist in Residence. He is Principal Bassoon of the Philharmonia Orchestra, and also a founder member of London Winds. He has conducted several of the world’s finest orchestras and is Professor of Conducting at the Royal College of Music.
