This message, said by Australia’s first Saint, Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, was celebrated at our

College Mass on Wednesday. With a strong sense of social justice, and in particular to provide an opportunity to the poor, Mary MacKillop taught

through inspiration to be hands on and practical, showing a true sense

of service with love.

Wednesday marked the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, and

we gathered for a celebration of the Eucharist celebrated by Monsignor

Swann in the DRMC. This special Mass included a beautiful reflection dance choreographed by our talented Year

10 students, which had an emphasis on each one of us being powerful, strong and capable - perfect - just the way we

are. We all have the opportunity to change the world, one day at a time. Let us all be inspired by the words of

Mary MacKillop to “never see a need without doing something about it.”

A WORD FROM THE DEPUTY > TERM 3 | WEEK 3

Academic AssemblyOn Wednesday last week our community celebrated the academic success of many of our students in Semester 1.

These academic awards recognise the top 10% of girls and boys in each year level calculated using the grade point average of the Semester 1 report. The event was a fantastic affirmation of those students who work very hard to achieve their best. We also recognised and celebrated those students who are accelerated in subjects across the College and those students who may not have achieved in the top 10% but did their best and received a Merit certificate for their efforts.

It was an enormous pleasure this year to welcome the families of our award winners to the assembly. Whilst Old Scholar families have always been invited to our start of year Academic Assembly, this was the first time we invited families to our Semester 1 assembly, and it was a great success. I would like to thank everyone who came along to support their children.

A highlight of the assembly was the speech given by our guest speaker Kyle Sauerwald, the proxime accessit for 2017. Kyle’s informative and entertaining speech gave three sage pieces of advice: don’t waste time, choose subjects which you are passionate about and let go of indecision by just choosing something!

Another highlight of the assembly was the amazing musical talent of our students. Deon Martino-Williams sang an encore from Song Contest – The Almost Eurovision Experience and our Concert Choir performed a number

of songs, which they will sing at the Catholic Schools Music Festival later this year. They are an outstanding group of musicians.

Subject Selections for 2019Last week our Year 11 and 10 students attended subject choice assemblies where they received information about the process for selecting subjects for 2019. They will select their subjects with their families at home and then attend counselling days with their parents to finalise the subject choices.

Families and friends of our Year 10, 11 and 12 students attended our annual Subject Information Evening on Wednesday this week. The main tertiary education providers were present along with Gleeson College staff presenting information about subjects available at the college and the One+ Campus.

Year 12 students and their parents attended a SATAC Assembly where they were introduced to the process of selecting their University and TAFE courses for 2019. It will not be long before they finish formal lessons and start preparing for examinations. Only 10 teaching weeks left!

Student Leadership 2018/19This week also saw the commencement of the Leadership Election process for our new Student Leaders whose leadership tenure runs from the beginning of Term 4 to the end of Term 3 in the following year. This is an arduous process and a very competitive one, which ultimately sees a great group of students step up to serve their community through their leadership skills and vision.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank most sincerely the current Student Leaders for the fantastic work they have done and especially for the way in which they have worked together so

harmoniously. They have set a very high standard for future leaders to follow.

Scoliosis AustraliaJuly and August are the months when it is recommended that all girls and boys in Years 7 to 9 participate in the National Self-Detection Program for Scoliosis (curvature of the spine). This can be done by downloading the Self-Detection Brochure from the Scoliosis Australia home page at the web address: www.scoliosis-australia.org/scoliosis/self_detection_prog.htmlFeast Day of Mary of the Cross MacKillopOn Wednesday this week we celebrated the Feast Day of Mary MacKillop with a beautiful Mass. Mary and the Sisters of St Joseph were committed to serving the poor – to going to where the need was and living amongst those in need.

Mary faced fierce opposition throughout her life. In the face of trial, Mary was a model of forgiveness, insisting no ill be spoken of those who wronged her, while also remaining resolute in her convictions. Mary was remarkable as a strong female leader in 19th century Australia. Education in this country is what it is today thanks to her dedication and determination.(https://www.marymackilloptoday.org.au/saint-mary-mackillops-feast-day-2018)

We commend and celebrate ourTop 10% of boys and girls from

Year 7 through to Year 12 for their outstanding academic achievement in Semester 1. These students were

presented certificates on stage at our Academic Assembly held in the

DRMC last Wednesday. Our Gleeson community listened to

SCIENCE + ENGINEERING CHALLENGE 201828 Gleeson College

Year 9 and 10 students contested the 2018 Science and Engineering

Challenge held at the Adelaide Super-Drome on August 2.

Our Gleeson Team left for the Statewide competition ready to win and excited to perfect the difficult

challenges ahead of them. Students were engaged for the entire day,

evaluating and revaluating their teams’ progress throughout the challenge. This event provided students the

opportunity to assess their weaknesses in the problems, then discuss and

brainstorm as a group to produce a solid working model within 90 minutes.

Students ran with the challenges and their team work and communication

skills were outstanding. A special mention goes to the ‘Confounding

Communications’ and ‘Turbine Groups’ who won these challenges through

their great teamwork and outstanding problem-solving skills!

Congratulations to Gleeson Year 9 student Jack Hutchins (9 FMHER) who was part of the South Australian team who won the Global Innovations Award for a hydrotherapy paddle design at the international FIRST LEGO League Championship held in Houston, Texas last term.

Jack, along with his RoboRoos East Lego League Team made up of eight Adelaide kids from The Student Robotics Club of SA Inc, won the prestigious award for their design of a resistance paddle that could be used for hydrotherapy in elderly patients. The team were up against 103 teams representing over 90 countries worldwide!! Well done to Jack and the SA Team on this exceptional achievement!

The SA Team were recognised in a great article in The Advertiser (‘SA Kids’ Big Idea Wins Lego League Award’) and below is an excerpt >The RoboRoos team, coached by BAE Systems employee Francis Lu, developed an affordable and effective hydrotherapy equipment that allows for a low impact method of strengthening recuperating muscles, or in maintaining a healthy body when ageing. They consulted hydrotherapists and fluid dynamic experts to build a prototype using silicone as the key component.

JACK + SA ROBOTICS TEAM WIN GLOBAL INNOVATIONS AWARD!

First Lego League, one of the most popular robotics competitions in the world, introduces younger students to real engineering challenges by inviting them to conduct research projects and build LEGO-based autonomous robots to complete tasks on a themed surface.

BAE Systems Australia director engineering and technology Brad Yelland said it was “a really outstanding effort” by the team.“We’re proud to support programs such as this to help inspire the future scientists and engineers that will be needed to help safeguard Australia’s defence and security capabilities.” he said.

LANGUAGE FUN FACT > SOCCERThe last time Italy missed out qualifying for the World Cup was in 1958 - six

decades ago! Italy is one of the most successful national teams in the history of the World Cup, having won four titles (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006) and appearing in

two other finals (1970, 1994), also finishing in 3rd (1990) and 4th place (1978).

LANGUAGE WORD OF THE WEEK > “Thank You”Italian: “Grazie” Japanese: “ありがとう”“Arigatou”

Football began in Japan in the early 1900s, and spiked in popularity in 1960 when Japan won a bronze medal at the Olympics. Japan is one of the most successful teams in Asia, having qualified for the last six consecutive World Cups

with second round advancements in 2002, 2010, and 2018.

WHY LEARN A SECOND LANGUAGE?With over 100 years of combined language teaching experience, Gleeson College is THE place to learn a second

language with over eight native second-language speakers on staff!Benefits of learning a second language > Your brain gets bigger and stronger | You improve your memory, logic and reasoning skills | Your brain learns how to multi-task better | You practice ‘growth mindset’ and develop resilience |

Improved literacy, comprehension and understanding of English | Increased employability | You boost your creativity and self-confidence | Increased intercultural understanding and tolerance for other cultures: essential for living or

working in Australia where 1 in 4 people are born overseas!

AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION @ GLEESON COLLEGE23 students from Years 7 to 10

The nationwide competition required students to work through a range of numerical, geometrical

and logical problems. These problems progressed from very

easy and straight forward questions to complex situations requiring

significant logical and algorithmic thinking.

Results and certificates will be available later this year.

Congratulations to all studentswho participated.
