In 2004, flying in a restored DC3, we commenced aseries of holidays to various parts of Australia using thename . Since then we haveflown DC3 tours to most states, including two “AroundAustralia” holidays lasting almost one month as weexplore our great country at a leisurely pace, includinglocations not usually included in air holidays.

In 2009 we changed our name to

DC3 Australian Air Holidays

Australian AirHolidays and broadened both the range of holidays weoffer and aircraft used. These twin engine planes nowinclude 10-passenger Chieftain, 12-passenger Titanand Kingair, 26-passenger DC3 and 52-passengerFokker 50’s.

In 2009 we made many trips to Lake Eyre, carryingapproximately 800 passengers to view this spectacular“inland sea”. We were thrilled by the overwhelminglyhigh level of satisfaction expressed by passengersconcerning all aspects of this program. We also flewseveral trips to Tasmania, again with great passengercomments. In 2010 with Lake Eyre again partially fillingas a result of continuing rain over 1,200 passengershave already booked on our weekend Lake Eyre flights.

Later this year we will be operating 2 and 3 dayweekend trips from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne andAdelaide flying to Mt Gambier, then a short distance bycoach to Penola, where Mary MacKillop spent manyyears, in association with her canonisation on October.

Our 2010 – 2011 Tasmanian program ranges from oneday to six days in Tasmania, King and Flinders Islands.

Earlier this year we operated weekend holidays fromMelbourne to view Masterpieces from Paris at theAustralian National Gallery in Canberra. These were ahit with art lovers who appreciated an organised “nofuss” visit to a unique event. “Pack your bag, we’ll dothe rest” was an appreciated theme of the event.

A custom designed and built stone school was commissionedby Fr Woods before he left Penola for a larger educational role, the cost of two hundred and ninety pounds financed by TheNational Bank of Australasia with five parishioners asguarantors, Mary being one of the original teachers.

In 1866 Mary and her sisters discarded their secular garmentsand dressed as religious postulants. Bishop Sheil approvedthe formation of the Order of Sisters of St Joseph of the SacredHeart. Mary became the first sister and Mother Superior and, within months, ten other sisters had joined. Poverty and noownership of personal belongings were two requirements of

members of the Order.

St Joseph’s school population was representative ofthe Penola District of the time – Catholics,

Protestants, Aboriginals, Scottish, Irish, Englishand Australians. Mary introduced a time-tabled program of learning with excellentresults.

Through Mary’s wisdom, determinationand energy the Order of the Sisters of StJoseph withstood attacks from within thechurch hierarchy and, by 1871, over onehundred and twenty women had takenvows. Being sent to any part of theAustralian colonies that needed theirservices, the Sisters had to be tough andresilient, and tough and resilient theycertainly were. A church Commissionthreatened the basis of the Order, andMary was excommunicated by BishopSheil, an act renounced five months lateras the bishop was approaching death.

Mary took her cause to Rome to seekformal approval for her Order. WhenMary returned from Europe, the firstGeneral Chapter of the Order met inMarch 1875. Mary was elected the firstSuperior General.

The responsibility of a fast growing Order, the huge amount of travel within Australia

and overseas and the deaths of Fr JulianWoods and her mother all affected her health.

However she was re-elected Superior Generalin 1898.

Always a keen participant in the community wellbeing, in 1903 she wrote to all Sisters stressing her view

that they should all exercise the responsibility given by newlaws giving women the right to vote.

In 1905, despite failing health, Mary was again electedSuperior General of the Sisters of St Joseph and, with someadministrative assistance, she held this position of honouruntil her death on August 8, 1909.

Few, if any, Australian women, especially during our earlyhistory, have influenced our nation for good to a greater extentthan Mary MacKillop.

The Mary MacKillop StoryAustralia’s 1st saint

Australian Air Holidays invites you to be part of the Australiancelebrations of the canonisation of Mary MacKillop at Penola, where her dream first became a reality. “Never see a needwithout doing something about it” was her catch cry in 1871and today remains the focus of Sisters of St Joseph.

On Sunday October 17, 2010 Mary MacKillop will become aAustralia’s first saint saint in a ceremony in St Peter’s Square inRome conducted by Pope Benedict XVI. Significantly, theCanonisation Vigil Liturgy for Australia’s first saint held inRome the day prior will commence with the playing of thedidgeridoo by representatives of the Aboriginal and TorresStrait Islander communities.

This ceremony is the realisation of a dream datingback to 1926 when the process for recognition as asaint commenced, a process postponed in 1931and recommenced in 1951, almost sixty yearsago.

In 1995 Mary was beatified by Pope JohnPaul II on acceptance by the Vatican of amiracle attributed to Mary. The lastsignificant hurdle was overcome onDecember 19, 2009 when at 11:00 p.m.(Penola, South Australian time) around100 people gathered for the occasion, heard the announcement from Romethat a second miracle (needed forcanonisation) had been accepted.Church bells from the Mary MacKillopPenola Centre were rung to wake thetown and announce this importantevent.

The Mary MacKillop story commencedin the family home in Brunswick Street,Fitzroy in 1842 when Mary was born toAlexander and Flora MacKillop, bothimmigrants of Catholic families from theHighlands of Scotland, who married soonafter their arrival in Australia in 1840.Mary was the oldest of a family of eightchildren and, at an early age, became amajor contributor to the family income asthe family struggled through many financialmisfortunes and losses. Aged fourteen, Marybegan four years of work as a clerk in aMelbourne stationery store, followed by a positionas governess to her aunt and uncle in Penola, living onthe prosperous Cameron Estate.

At Penola she met Fr Julian Woods, a young priest whobecame her Spiritual Director and who shared Mary’s deeppassion to better serve the educational and spiritual needs ofthe poor in the growing number of towns in country SouthAustralia. Fr Woods invited Mary, now a qualified andsalaried teacher in Portland, and two of her sisters to Penolafor the opening of St Joseph’s School, Penola in a disusedstable. At age twenty four, Mary was now able to give her lifeto God in the way she most wished, the education of the poor.
