DG Notes

WELCOME to our 2018-2019 year. We are starting with a great year and a great team!! As we move through this Li-on’s year it will take coordination, cooperation and creativity to take our Lions district to enhanced and new opportunities.

I have begun the initial work to set club visitations and will be working closely with our incoming Zone Chairs to lock in dates to begin our visitation process. We have some of our zone chairs, club presidents and vice district governors and district governor still in the work force, so your flexibility will be called upon and greatly appreciated.

As you read through our first newsletter, you will begin to take our journey with our signature project Childhood Can-cer. We are partnering with Mary Bridge Hospital and our specific effort will be Family Support. More information in an article in this newsletter.

We have new opportunities coming from dual LCIF programs and how we can fit. We have new leadership with our Diabe-tes program. Our co-chairs each have life involvement with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Our new Vision chair is excited and ready to lead out programs. Our environmental pro-grams are expanding with more earth day programs, new po-tential partnerships and our new Eco club branch. I will be sharing much more about out new leaders in future news-letters.

I am in Vegas attending the District Governor Elect School and the International Convention. What an opportunity to learn so much, meet up with old Lions friends and meet some fabulous new Lions from around the world. What a great service organization we belong to.

Please join myself, 1st VDG Pat Burch and 2nd VDG Donna Murr in making this a fun year in Lions and continue to make a difference in each life we touch, be that one person or a bazillion persons…we do make a difference.

Hope to see you at the July 23 Banner Passing/Cabinet Meeting at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Tacoma. Don’t forget to register.

Stay cool and safe this summer. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do. DG Sharon Sikes

What is a Club Service Chair (CSC)?

The Club Service Chair (CSC) is an elected position and serves for 1 year as a club officer. Also a member of the Board of Di-rectors.

The main duties of the Club Service Chair

1. Implementing impactful service and fundraising projects.

2. Increasing member participation in ser-vice projects.

3. Elevating awareness of Lions collective impact in fulling global humanitarian needs.

4. Complete Service Activity report in LCI.

Do you have a Club Service Chair?

At this point only 10 of the 46 clubs have Club Service Chairs. Only three clubs out of 46 have failed to report any service activi-ties. I know that you are all very active. Congratulations on serving 67, 094 people.

Next steps for each club.

Name a CSC for the year. Develop a form for club members to rec-

ord their activities. Form should include Date, Activity, num-

ber of Lions hours and number of people served.

Encourage club members to complete and turn in service report to the Club Service Chair.

From the Editor

I have taken over the District Bulletin this year for DG Sharon,. I have created the Puyallup Lions Club Bulletin for over fifteen years now. I am a PZC as well as a graduate of the NW Lions Leadership Institute as well as the International Advanced Lions Leader-ship Institute.

The goal of this bulletin is not only to send out useful information but to give a highlight of what is going on in the district. As a result I ask for each ZC to forward me a short blurb about the happenings in their Zone each month. I also need to know of any of our Li-ons Family that pass a way throughout the year. Also wanted are new members names as well as their sponsors. Beginning in the August Bulletin there will be areas to show these items.

Please forward any flyers for activities as well to my email address, [email protected].. I will reduce them and place them in the bulletin to help adver-tise your activities. I really want this bulletin to be informative as well as useful to all groups that receive it. This month we have a short bio on the Vice District Governors as well as the ZC’s for zone C-2 and C-5. I hope the other four Zones will send me infor-mation so that their bio’s can be shared.

The bulletin will only be as useful as the in-formation that I receive from the clubs as well as the ZC’s. . I look forward to putting out a great bulletin for everyone involved.

Yours in Service, PZC John Budzak Jr. (JJ)

Childhood Cancer Program

Lions Clubs International recently introduced a new Program, Pediatric Childhood Cancer, which is now titled Childhood Cancer. The primary goal of Lions is to provide humanitarian service to 200 million people yearly. This new Program is another avenue to accomplish this goal by providing humanitarian service to children suffering with all types of cancer! DG Sha-ron Sikes has chosen this as her signature program, partnering with Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation in Tacoma. VDG’s Pat Burch and Donna Murr will continue the program during their terms of office. Because there are many different ways to support the Childhood Cancer Program, the District 19C Childhood Cancer Committee has chosen to focus on “family support” during this first year. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, as parents or a single parent, their world is turned upside down! Parents and families are needed by the child everyday supporting them through many ups and downs, tests, radiation, chemo, sickness and more. This often times means leaving their job and giving 100% the time to the child. As a parent, they are their child’s ROCK! Families can become financially challenged with needs such as: gas for trans-portation, funds for rent/mortgages, food, bills and medicine. Some families even need housing support for long or short term stays to be with their child 24 hours a day. Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation provides assistance for parents needing Support. The childhood cancer committee has been working throughout the spring laying the founda-tion for this new program. Committee members are DG Sharon Sikes, CC John Kirry, PDG Marilynn Danby, PZC Sandy Johnston, 1st VDG Pat Burch, 2nd VDG Donna Murr, PZC Dee McDermott and Zone Chair Jim McDermott. Christina Turner, Community Development Co-ordinator for Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation Tacoma WA, also sits on the committee. You ask – how can your Lions Club help? We are asking clubs to add a line item in your yearly budget to support childhood cancer. Clubs can put together designated fun and exciting fund raisers for “Family Support”. 100% raised or donated go to “family support”. An example, Gig Harbor Lions held a successful Flap Jack feed at Applebee’s. All funds raised go directly to Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation “family support” for the District 19C Lions Account. Invite your communities to join in. Everyone will have fun while helping children, and their families, in their fight against Cancer. Please call or email Jim & Dee McDermott Chair/Co-Chair at 360.456.6990 or [email protected] . Thank you for helping us to support these families!

Lions Youth Exchange

PDG George Robison, MD19 YEP Chair

Although Multiple District 19 (MD19) has a formal Youth Exchange Program (YEP), several clubs, zones and districts have independent youth exchanges. An attempt to cata-log these, in the event that other clubs, zones or districts could use them as a pattern, failed. Some clubs or zones have sister-city programs that include a youth exchange and some districts have a scholarship program that substantially supports an exchange. These all work quite well with the MD19 YE Program.

At one time in District 19C, several zones went together and sponsored an essay contest each year, with a YEP monetary scholarship for the winner, to boost participation in YEP. So far as I know, these no longer exist. Why? Primarily because they are time inten-sive and the Lions who made them work are no longer able or available to carry forth the effort. Secondarily, it has become more difficult to promote such contests through the public schools.

In 2017 a new approach was taken involving all MD19. Information about the pro-gram and the process for scholarship applications was made known to every club in MD19 and promoted several times through the LEO Program. Only two applications were re-ceived and both applicants live in 19C. Both applicants were awarded a scholarship, one to aid in an exchange to Italy and the other to aid in an exchange to Australia.

It is hoped that when the 2018 application process is opened later this year that there will be more applicants. The 2018 program will be announced to all Lions clubs and to LEO clubs on or about October 1st. The process is simple, fill out an application and attach an essay telling why the applicant is the best choice to represent MD19 in the Youth Exchange Program.

Funding for the scholarships comes from the Lions Youth Exchange Foundation of MD19, a tax exempt public charity under IRS Code 501(c)(3). The Foundation depends on donations from individuals and Lions Clubs. Every Club in the District is asked to donate to the Foundation and include a donation in future budgets. Donations can be made to the Foundation by mailing to the Treasurer, Lion Tammy Allan, 312 S. 1st Street, Selah, WA 98942.

International Information

Districts and clubs will have the option to report their

service activities in

fiscal year 2018-19 using either MyLion for web or MyLCI

We received feedback from district and club officers about their challenges with the July 1, 2018 launch of MyLion as the new service activities reporting system. And we listened. We understand that clubs and districts need more time to prepare for this important transition. By giving clubs and districts the option to report through MyLion for web or through MyLCI in fiscal year 2018-19, we can:

Provide more time for training our club and district officers

Give officers at all levels more time to communicate with their members and clubs to ensure a successful transition to MyLion

Ensure that club and district officers have the time they need to test MyLion so they can use it with confidence

We are still planning to release MyLion for web on July 1, 2018. We encourage eve-ryone who is ready to use MyLion web to begin using it next year, but MyLCI can still be used for service activity reporting throughout the coming year. We will be combining service activity reports for both systems so that reports will be accurate no matter which platform you or your Lions are using.

Innovations like the new MyLion for web reporting system are important to the pre-sent and future of Lions. It also takes time, training and communication to make sure innovative technologies like MyLion work most effectively for our clubs and dis-tricts.

To better support you, we will send out more information including FAQs and training schedules in the coming days. We look forward to working with you over the coming year to prepare all clubs and districts for a successful transition to MyLion for web in fiscal year 2019-20.

Thank you for your continued support and leadership in making your districts and

clubs the top destinations for service-minded men and women around the world.

Yours sincerely,

Patrick Rodwell, on behalf of the LCI Product Team
