Brother Knights, the holy season of Advent has begun and the church, throughout the world, prepares to celebrate birth of Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Sometimes, I have wondered what this time of year is like for Christians on the other side of the equator where days are growing longer and warmer, rather than shorter and colder. This time of year is uniquely a season of lights. It is, also, distinctively, a season of song. Did you ever notice that no one goes caroling for Easter? Yet, in December, lots of neighborhoods and nursing homes are regaled by groups of good-hearted, roving choirs of good cheer. progress, found some candles and a couple of things that were helpful. In the meantime, I just wandered around the “super” store to see what they were offering people to help them celebrate Christmas. Honestly, there wasn’t much there to help illuminate the meaning of Christmas, for me. Although I admit I grew up enjoying the lights and glitz, presents, tinsel, etc. I even cried at the end of the movie, White Christmas, when Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye surprised the old general with a big party to help bail out his failing ski lodge.

What is it for you that truly lights up the Christmas gift of God’s coming to love and save us, the reason for the season? Among all the lights that flicker, blink, hang from eaves, and cover bushes, what is the light that warms your soul? Advent invites us to ponder those questions and calls us to find the space and quiet—even if we can only manage a few minutes—to do so. The answer, or even just the clue, we discover will likely surprise us. We should anticipate that it will be like the event of Jesus’ birth, itself—hidden in darkness, in the most unseemly place, involving the humblest and simplest of people. That is where the light of the world began to shine! Where will our Bethlehem be, where our manger, our shepherds, our Mary and Joseph?

May the light of the Holy Spirit guide us. Blessings on your Advent journey, and a Merry Christmas to you and yours! Peace and good will to all.

GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT Michael Murphy

The Christian Meaning to Ancient Traditions

December 25th was the Saturnalia Festival of emancipation, gift giving and the triumph of light after the longest night. The Christian sees the truth implicit in this pagan tradition that reflects: Christ the Light of the world, His triumph over the night of sin in Luke 1:78-79.

Evergreen Trees were the symbol of eternal life. Martin Luther introduced them to the Reformation Church as a picture of our endless life in Christ, by bringing in a tree to his family on Christmas Eve lit with candles (Isaiah 60:13).

Candles are a picture that Christ is the Light of the world (John 8).

Holly speaks of the thorns in His crown (Matthew 27:29).

Red is a color of Christmas that speaks of Christ's blood and death.

Gifts are a reminder of the gifts of the Magi to baby Jesus. Each of them speak to a component of His incarnation: Majesty in life, Bitterest Agony in Death and He as God’s Perfect gift to us (Matthew 2).

The Yule Log was a symbol by which all the men in the family would carry a log large enough to burn for 12 days into the house. They were identifying with Christ and His Cross. The fire was started with a fragment from the previous year’s [this refers to the eternal existence of Christ before His birth] log. It speaks of warmth, unity, joy and the security of endless life.

Mistletoe was an ancient symbol from the Roman times. It was under Mistletoe that old enmities and broken friendship were restored. Therefore, Christ was the One who took away the enmity and gave us Peace with God (Romans 5:1; Romans 8:1).

Bells are associated with ringing out news. Christ is the good news, the best news of all.

Christmas Eve is a time when we remember that Christ came in the darkest night of Earth's need to be the Light of the World.

Shepherds who were watching lambs for use as sacrifices in the Temple, were the first to hear the great news that the Lamb to end all sacrifices had appeared.

Christmas Pie is an old tradition that uses a Mince pie with various spices to remember the spices of the Magi. For centuries it was made in a manger shape.

Modern Additions

In 1822 Clement Moore wrote a poem for children that has never been forgotten. It was entitled, "Twas the Night before Christmas..."!

Santa Claus is a Dutch word that is actually Sinter Claus, Saint Nicholas in English.

Saint Nicholas was the supposed early Bishop of a church in Asia Minor [the modern country of Turkey]. He became aware of some desperate needs in his congregation, and a family having to sell their children into slavery, so one night he came and left money on their doorstep. It was gold in a stocking.

Christmas Cards started in 1844. An English artist named William Dobson, drew up some pictures in England for use at this season. They found local use there and soon spread to America. In 1846 Cole and Horsley saw the commercial potential of this growing tradition and started the production of what is now over a $1,000,000,000.00 industry, which sees 4 billion cards sent each year in America alone.

A Final Conclusion

Don't lose the Spiritual Depth of Christmas because of its Pagan association.

Don't miss the Spiritual Delight of Christmas because of the Commercial association.

Don't forget the Spiritual Despair of the World because of Christmas and its wonders.

Some challenges:

1. Give a gift to Jesus. 2. Like Christ, give to those who can't

repay you. 3. Pause to sense the darkness outside

at night, and then thank God for sending the light.

4. Read the Scriptures to your family. 5. Start some traditions that point to

Christ. 6. Enjoy this wonderful time of the year,

don't lose the season for the rush.

A Very Merry and Blessed Christmas to You and Your Family! Vivat Jesus, Mike

GOOD OF THE ORDER Ray Miles, Recorder

The door prize for the Good of the Order drawing reached the magic $250 level just in time for the November Council Business Meeting. For the benefit of our newer members, each Brother Knight pays a $1 into the Good of the Order drawing as he enters the meeting each month. At the end of the Business Meeting, under the scrutiny of the Worthy Lecturer, a Brother Knight's name is drawn from the fish bowl. If that Brother Knight is present at the meeting, he wins the door prize. If the Brother Knight is not present, the door prize is carried forward to the next month's Business Meeting. That process continues until the door prize reaches $250. At that point, names are drawn from the fish bowl until a member present wins the entire $250. The door prize then goes back to whatever amount is collected at the door at the following months. The winner of the $250 door prize at the November Council Business Meeting was Brother Harold Bernadzekowski. Congratulations, Harold!!

PIT BEEF David Love

A Big Thank you goes out to all who helped this season to make Pit Beef a success again. IT was a rough start with a Rain soaked 4th of July but the Maryland Wine Festival was a Success and the Harvest Festival an even larger success. Almost doubled our sales from last year’s Harvest festival. 900 sandwiches with only 1 roll left over at the end of the weekend.

Thanks to the Cashiers and money men, Rich, Bill and Joe, who handled all the cash so I could focus on the food. It really does take a crew to run each event. Thanks to all who came out and helped to set up, grill, trim the meat, make fires and clean up, slice, sandwich making serving the customers. I hope I do not forget anyone: Al, Alec, Alex, Andy, Bill, Bill, Bill, Blanca, Bobbi, Colin, Debbie, Eric, EJ, George, Glen, Jarvis, Jeanne, Joanne, Kathy, Kelly, Larry, Louise, Mark, Mary Mike, Mike, Monica, Salina, Sue, Steve, Terri, Thom, Tim, Tom, and Walt. And of Course my Loving Family that puts up with me during these crazy weekends, Carol, Joe, Katy and Ryan.

Now it is time to winterize the trailers and set them up for the long winters nap.

Thank you for everyone’s Help through the years and looking forward to next year and maybe adding a few more local day events in Sykesville in the Spring. Keep checking back for updates.

God Bless,

CONCESSION STAND PROJECT Tony Gioio

An invitation to join us Operating the M&T stadium/ Ravens

concession stands is our council’s largest fundraising activity, we will raise over $20,000.00 this year. However this is only one of the reasons why we choose to spend so much of our time at the stadium. The main reason is because it is a personally rewarding

experience and we enjoy doing it. Managing the concession stands has been one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life, not because of the money that we have earned, but because of all of the friendship and love that has been bestowed on me by my fellow workers over the years. Between the 3 stands we run, we serve about 2,000 customers an event. To do it well and be profitable, and we do do it well, it takes determination and team work. A fraternity develops between teammates; it is a unique type of relationship of friendship and trust that only occurs when you work shoulder to shoulder with another to obtain

a common goal. Because of our work at M&T Stadium I have been blessed by being able to build this type of relationship with many of you.

So I invite all of you to come on down, join our Concession stand Team and become part of our extended family. We are always looking for more help and I guarantee that you will enjoy yourself and be welcomed as a member of our team. At the end of the day you will have a feeling of pride in yourself and in your fellow friends and council members for all that you have shared in accomplishing.

15 times a year, you and your fellow council members have responded to my request by forming teams to run our stands. We have been very successful and not missed a single event in over 5 years.

There are 3 football games left this year: Sun., Dec 4th  1:00  Steelers @ Ravens

Sat., Dec 10th  3:00  Army vs. Navy

Sun., Dec 18th  1:00  Eagles @ Ravens

So again I invite you all to come on down

and join us, bring your kids or grandkids if they are over 16.

Grand Knights report – Nov 2016 “write your own sincere apology”

On Saturday Nov 19th a co-worker/friend of mine passed away. He had been battling cancer for 2 years, and although I knew he was terminal, I did not expect him to go this soon. I will call him Bill. Bill and I had known each other back in the 90’s we worked briefly together, then I moved away, came back to the Maryland area, and we ended up sharing an office from 2004-2010.

Bill had problems, he had health problems, and he had a difficult childhood that had left him with baggage. Bill was never able to unload the baggage and it affected him throughout his life.

After I found out that he had cancer, I started thinking about our working years together, I took a hard look at how I had treated Bill, and I must admit I am ashamed at how badly I had treated him. I was a bully; I talked about him to other people, found humor in his troubles, and really was not that nice. When I found out he had cancer, I made an effort to call him occasionally,

stop over and see him, and try to cheer him up. I think I was a better friend in his final year or so, and I decided that I need to ask for his forgiveness for not being a better friend than I had been. I had made up my mind, the next time I see him I would ask him. I practiced what I was going to say, and hoped that he would forgive me.

But then I got the call, he was in Hospice at Carroll County, Saturday morning I drove up to see him, arrived at 10:00 in the morning, only to be told he passed away at 8:15. I was deeply saddened. We talked about 10 days ago, and after getting off the phone with him, I believed he would see 2017. I figured I would see him a couple of times over the break.

So my chance to ask for forgiveness is over, I guess my point is do not delay, I could have asked him on the phone, but again I delayed. Now I will confess to the priest.

Stay Strong, God is on our side! Al Grasley “Pro-Life Guy”
