INT. FACILITY OFFICE - MORNING

Through a window, blue sky, bright sunshine and a singlepalm tree.

HEIDI BERGMAN -- 30s, bright and professional -- rises fromher desk and greets WALTER CRUZ -- late-20s, sturdy but abit shy -- as he comes in.

HEIDIHi, are you Walter?

WALTERYeah, hi -- Heidi?

The office is bland with a few scattered attempts atpersonality: a puzzle toy, a framed fingerpainting, a largebuilt-in aquarium.

HEIDIYep, come in. Lemme just...

Heidi fiddles with a digital audio recorder on her desk.

HEIDI (cont'd)Is it okay if I record this? For myreference?

HEIDI (cont'd)You see that hose, it’s pointedright at them? It’s bubbling? Ican’t tell if it's annoying or,like, enjoyable.

WALTERHmm. I don’t know if fish... enjoythings.

HEIDIHuh. Yeah, you’re probably right.

They both stare at the aquarium for a moment.

HEIDI (cont'd)Turning more professional( )

Okay, why don’t we sit down.

DARAThat guy at the booth asked for hischeck.

HEIDI and WALTER sit across from each other. Heidireferences a file on her computer.

HEIDIOkay. Walter Cruz, twenty-six yearsold, three tours. You got here, when? Tuesday?

WALTERYeah, Tuesday.

HEIDIWonderful. Now, there’s a sort ofwelcome that I’m supposed toread...

Picks up a printout( )I’m gonna warn you, it’s very, veryboring.

WALTERHa, okay.

HEIDIReading( )

Welcome, Walter Cruz. First, allowme to thank you, on behalf of thepresident and a grateful country, for your valuable service. We thankyou for keeping us safe!

Off-script a moment( )It’s kind of cheesy, I know.

5.

Page 7: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

WALTERNo, it’s fine.

HEIDIOkay, good.

Back to script( )My name is Heidi Bergman, and I’myour caseworker, which means I’m atyour disposal to assist however Ican in the re-integration process. Our facility is a safe space for toprocess your military experienceand re-familiarize yourself withcivilian life in a monitoredenvironment.

Off-script( )Which just means getting yousituated now that you’re back.Career-wise, health-wise --basically, I work for you.

WALTEROkay.

HEIDIThe only-- I don’t wanna saymandatory, but...

WALTERMandatory?

HEIDIWell, yeah, I guess so. The onlymandatory elements are the grouplunches in the cafeteria, the job-training workshops, and thesemeetings with me. Which hopefullywon’t be too painful!

WALTERNo, that sounds really good. Iwanna be in compliance with allthis. Or, I mean... I know why I’mhere. I’m glad to be here. I’vetalked to other guys who came home, they got really amped, they doveinto everything, and then they...they had some problems. I don’twant to end up like them. ...ButI’m eager.

HEIDIEager for what?

6.

Page 8: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

WALTEREverything, I guess. Or just...Just a life, really. A clean, normal life. And I don’t wanna, like, pollute things back here. With my stuff, my stress orwhatever. So I’m glad to be in theprogram, and I’m ready for whatevermoves the process along.

HEIDII hear what you’re saying. That’sexactly what we’re gonna do. Okay?

WALTEROkay, great.

HEIDIReturning to the script( )

And you acknowledge that yourparticipation in the HomecomingInitiative is voluntary anduncoerced.

Waits( )I need you to verbally acknowledgethat.

WALTEROh. Yes. I do.

HEIDIOkay! That’s done.

Sets down the script( )So. Tell me about yourself.

WALTERSure, um... Anything specific?

HEIDIAnything! Anything about you.

WALTERRight, okay. Lemme think...

Walter ponders while Heidi smiles encouragingly.

HEIDIHow about... When did you decide to join the military?

WALTEROh man, I was young. Maybe 12, 13?

7.

Page 9: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

HEIDIReally?

WALTERYeah.

HEIDIDid your parents serve?

WALTERLaughs( )

My parents? No.

HEIDIWhy's that funny?

WALTERYou'd have to know my mom. She'santi-military, anti-government.Anti-everything, really.

HEIDISo you were rebelling, choosingthis life?

WALTERMaybe, yeah. But I also-- That'sjust how I came out.

HEIDIWhat, rebellious?

WALTERNo, I mean the opposite. Like, believing.

INT. AIRPORT TERMINAL - DAY

COLIN BELFAST, an upscale company man, speed-walks through abusy terminal, pulling a roller bag behind him. He swervesaround an old lady and dials a new-model cellphone.

INT. FACILITY OFFICE - EVENING - INTERCUT AS NEEDED

Heidi sits at her desk, speaking into the recorder whilereferring to a notepad.

HEIDI...see no obstacles to approvingCruz for sub-group placement andstarting him on--

8.

Page 10: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

Her cellphone rings. She glances at the screen and thenanswers, setting the recorder down on her desk.

HEIDI (cont'd)Into phone( )

Hi, Colin?

COLINHeidi?

His voice is swamped by static and airport chatter.

HEIDIColin? Hello?

COLINHeidi? Your connection is reallyshoddy. Are you there?

HEIDII’m here. Can you hear me?

COLINOkay, just barely, I’ve barely gotyou. Go ahead.

HEIDIGo ahead?

COLINYeah, go ahead with the update.

HEIDIOh, sorry, yes.

Heidi switches the phone to speaker mode and puts it on herdesk while she taps on a keyboard.

HEIDI (cont'd)We’re all set with intake, we’vegot everyone in their rooms, everyone documented. Eighteen men, three sub-groups.

COLINOkay, great.

Distracted( )Where the hell is...

In the terminal, Colin stops abruptly, the stream ofpassengers bumping around him.

9.

Page 11: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

HEIDIColin?

COLINSorry, I’m in transit here -- I’mswitching at the airport inDetroit. They did a nice job, actually.

HEIDIHow did the presentation go?

Colin cranes his neck at a departures monitor and then walksbriskly in the opposite direction.

COLINOh, fantastic. They love theprogram, love the early indicators, love the broader applications.

While Colin speaks, Heidi glances at a clock on the wall --it's after 7:00.

HEIDIInaudibly( )

Shit. Shit.

She stands and quietly packs her bag while continuing theconversation.

HEIDI (cont'd)Oh, that’s great.

COLINNo idea if that means we can re-budget around the proposed numbers,of course. It’s all double-talkwhen it comes to the money.

Rushing through the airport, Colin trips over a littlegirl's backpack.

COLIN (cont'd)Ah shit, I’m sorry. I didn’t seethat.

HEIDIWhat?

The girl's father shouts at Colin as he passes.

10.

Page 12: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

COLINShouting over his(shoulder)

I’m sorry for stepping on yourbackpack. This is a walkway.

Back into the phone( )It’s a fucking zoo in here.

Back to the FATHER, who’s(still shouting)

This is a walkway. Goodbye.

Heidi picks up the phone along with her bulging bag.

HEIDIColin?

COLINAnyway, I told them we need to moveon this. Fast, fast, fast.

Heidi grabs another file from her desk, turns off therecorder, grabs another file, and heads out of her office. She walks down a sleek corporate hallway.

HEIDIThe early interviews are reallypromising, I think, reallyencouraging. These guys all seemcommitted to the process, and thesurveys are already trending in agreat direction. This week,actually--

COLINHeidi? I don’t--

HEIDIOh, sorry, go ahead.

COLINI just don’t have a lot of time.

Colin stops at an intersection, unsure which direction toturn.

COLIN (cont'd)God, this terminal is enormous.

HEIDIYou need to run?

Heidi turns a corner and passes through the client quarters,an abrupt contrast. The basic contours are similar, but theoffices have been repurposed as bedrooms.

11.

Page 13: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

Propped-open doors reveal Homecoming clients hanging out, laughing, watching TV, playing cards.

At the airport, Colin turns left and rushes down a movingwalkway.

COLINI do, yeah, but I really wannaimpress on you the importance, inthe files, the subject histories?Of collecting actual data, and thenshowing week-by-week progress. Weneed to be surgically precise inidentifying their experiences --everything they remember.

Heidi lowers her voice, mindful of the client rooms she ispassing.

HEIDIAbsolutely, yeah. I think we’reseeing--

COLINWe need to get really granular withall that shit.

HEIDIAbsolutely, absolutely. That kindof brings up an issue that I wantedto speak with you about--

Heidi looks around and steps into an empty alcove.

COLINOkay, I have literally one moreminute.

Stops, looks around( )Where the fuck is B26? These areall A gates. The signage here needsa lot of work.

Colin turns around and gets on the opposite walkway.

Heidi leans against the wall and continues speaking a bitquietly.

HEIDII was just working with a clienttoday, Walter Cruz?

12.

Page 14: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

And I was thinking, as far as beingHEIDI (cont'd)

very deliberate and, as you said, granular, what if we took a moreholistic approach to the initialstages of the treatment?

COLINHolistic?

HEIDII mean, at this point, we’rethrowing them in the chair andstarting the process withoutdeveloping much of a dialogue, andwe could get deeper, moreindividualized outcomes if we couldjust--

COLINOkay, Heidi? I’m gonna stop youthere.

HEIDIOkay.

COLINBecause I’m not loving these wordsI’m hearing. We aren’t looking forindividualized or holistic orwhatever results at all. What we’reseeking here is information, Heidi. Not relationships, not rapport.Your job is to conduct interviewsand record facts -- that’s it.Whatever these men are holdingonto, that’s exactly what we needto know. So you need to 180 on thisright now, okay?

HEIDINo, I get that. But the clients, the subjects--

COLINBased on what you just said, youdon’t. So you need to 180 on that, okay?

Heidi sighs and steps out of the alcove.

HEIDIOkay, got it. It was just an idea. For the-- To improve the data.

13.

Page 15: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

She passes through an activities area and then a makeshiftcafeteria. She waves goodbye to someone and heads down astaircase.

COLINLook, I’m literally flying to DC aswe speak, and the guys at DOD aregonna ask me where we’re at withthis, and if I say “holistic”?They’re gonna... I don’t even knowwhat they’d do. So whatever thefuck you’re saying to me right now, about slowing down, muddying up theprocess, that’s exactly theopposite of what we need to bedoing, okay? We need real proof ofconcept here, just a house of datato drop on the Appropriationspeople, so they shut their mouthsand stop prevaricating and open upthe approval process. That’s ourgoal. Okay, Heidi?

Colin has come to a stop in the crowded terminal.

HEIDIOkay, yes.

COLINUnderstood?

HEIDIUnderstood.

Colin resumes rolling his bag.

COLINGood. Okay, I’m gonna run. Wish meluck.

HEIDIGood luck, Colin!

Heidi walks across a bright lobby and comes to the frontdoor. The glare of the setting sun makes it difficult to seeclearly through the glass. Just before she opens the door--

COLINOh! One last thing. Did we run thebackground check on the busboys?

HEIDIBackground check the what?

14.

Page 16: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

COLINThe busboys! Did we backgroundcheck the busboys? Whoever’sworking in the cafeteria.

HEIDIOh, I didn’t realize that was partof my--

COLINOf course it’s part-- Heidi, wehave to be extremely thorough withthe food service. You’re my pointperson there, right?

HEIDIYes, definitely.

COLINGreat. So I need you to stopwhatever it is you’re doing rightnow and get into that -- busboys, caterers, whatever. Backgroundchecks, full workups. We’ve gottabe seamless with all that shit.

HEIDIAlright. Got it.

COLINOkay, great, gotta go.

Colin hangs up, pulls out his earbuds, and rushes to a gate.He presents his phone to the ticketing agent, who scans itagain and again.

COLIN (cont'd)This never works. Why does thisnever work?

In the lobby, Heidi sighs, looks out the glass for a moment, then turns and walks back toward her office.

INT. HEIDI'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Heidi bumps open the front door, still lugging her bag offiles.

HEIDIHello?

ANTHONY answers from the kitchen.

15.

Page 17: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

ANTHONY (O.S.)In here!

Her place is a modest one-bedroom, newly renovated. Half-emptied moving boxes spill books, clothes, silverware.

Heidi sets down her bags, sighs wearily, then musters acheery posture and heads toward the kitchen.

HEIDISomething smells good...

Later, Heidi sits at a kitchen table while Anthony -- 40s,sweet but needy -- spoons a mound of pasta onto her plate.

HEIDI (cont'd)This looks great, thank you.

ANTHONYYeah, it got a little cold but--

HEIDII know, sorry I got held up.

ANTHONYIt's no problem. You're here now.

He sits down with his own plate and smiles eagerly. Theychew in awkward silence.

ANTHONY (cont'd)So, how was today?

HEIDIGood. It was... Yeah, good.

She thinks for a moment but doesn't say anything else.

HEIDI (cont'd)How about you? What'd you get upto?

ANTHONYI called the internet company?

HEIDIOh, great. What did they say?

ANTHONYApparently they're not yourprovider. They don't serve thisarea.

16.

Page 18: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

HEIDIHuh.

ANTHONYYeah. And no one seems to knowwhich company does. I was like,it's gotta be someone, right?

HEIDII think it's called--

ANTHONYI got a little frustrated, I wasstarting to yell, so I decided: youknow what? I'm gonna go out for awalk. I ended up, have you been bythat little airfield?

HEIDIYou mean the one past the highway?

ANTHONYYeah. I ended up over there and--

HEIDIThat's like ten miles away.

ANTHONYIs it?

HEIDIYeah. You walked there?

ANTHONYI guess I did. Anyway, there wasthis little jet out on the runway. And the pilot, he was leaning rightup on the plane, just reading hispaper, drinking a coffee. And Ithought, I wonder if I could dothat.

HEIDIWhat?

ANTHONYLive that life. Fly all over. Comeback here. It's beautiful here, youknow?

Heidi smiles but doesn't respond.

ANTHONY (cont'd)We ended up chatting, actually--

17.

Page 19: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

HEIDIWho? You and the pilot?

ANTHONYYeah, and he said there's a flightschool, not too far from here.

HEIDIAnthony, I've really loved havingyou down here, all the help withthe move, but my job--

ANTHONYDefinitely, me too -- this time hasbeen so great, and--

HEIDIBut I know you need to get back towork, right?

ANTHONYYeah, but I hate my job, right? AndI know how important this is foryou, this opportunity. So I wasjust thinking...

He trails off awkwardly, and Heidi chews her pasta for along moment.

HEIDII think it's Galaxy One.

ANTHONYWhat?

HEIDIThe internet company, for thisarea. I think it's called GalaxyOne.

ANTHONYOh, well that explains it. I calledthe wrong place.

He laughs. Heidi twirls her fork in the noodles.

INT. SHOE STORE - DAY

A manager, CRAIG, sits on a bench next to a stack of shoeboxes. He studies a resume.

CRAIGYou can work nights too?

18.

Page 20: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

Walter, sitting on a bench across from him, answerspolitely.

WALTERYep, that’s no problem.

CRAIGAnd, if you had to change one thingabout yourself, what would that be?

WALTERI guess I’d say... I can be kind ofdetail-oriented. That can be a goodthing, but also it’s important totake a step back sometimes. I coulddo more of that.

Craig nods and writes something on the resume.

CRAIGWell, this is very helpful. Thanksfor coming in -- we’ll let you knowsoon.

WALTERGreat.

They stand and shake hands. Suddenly, there’s scatteredapplause.

CUT WIDER to see that the “shoe store” is a kind of stageset inside the facility's communal area -- two benches, someshoe boxes, and other props.

WALTER’S SUBGROUP -- six guys his age -- clap for him, gently sarcastic.

Craig turns to the group.

CRAIGThat was great, Walter. I like howyou asked me about my experienceworking at the store. Aninterview’s a conversation, it’s atwo-way street. Right?

Walter joins the rest of the group, standing next to hisfriend SHRIER.

SHRIERGood job, dude.

WALTERThanks, dude.

19.

Page 21: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

SHRIERFucking nailed it. I think youmight be manager material.

WALTERShut up.

Craig looks down a list on a clip-board.

CRAIGOkay, how about... Rainey?

The guys clap and lightly jeer as RAINEY steps forward. Hissmile is weaker, a bit pained.

CRAIG (cont'd)Consulting clip board( )

You’re Week Five, is that right?

RAINEYYeah.

CRAIGSo, couple weeks, you could bedoing this for real.

RAINEYI mean, I'm not gonna work at ashoe store, but...

CRAIGIt's good practice, whatever youdecide to do.

RAINEYYeah, sure.

They sit.

CRAIGGreat! Well, hi, welcome.

RAINEYHi.

CRAIGThis is my shoe store. I own it.

RAINEYIt’s... really nice.

CRAIGThanks. Mind if I take a look atyour resume?

20.

Page 22: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

RAINEYSure.

Rainey hands him the resume; Craig skims it.

CRAIGYou served in the military?

RAINEYI did.

CRAIGThat’s great, we love that. What’ssomething you learned in themilitary that you think you couldapply to your work here?

RAINEYHere?

CRAIGUh huh.

RAINEYIt was basically empty desert. There weren't a ton of shoe stores.

The guys chuckle.

CRAIGRainey, come on. Humor me a little.

RAINEYAlright, something I learned...Like, leadership? Something likethat?

CRAIGYou tell me.

RAINEYI don’t, uh... Okay, here'ssomething, as far as shoes. Yougotta get the right size, or youcould get infected.

CRAIGInfected, great...

Trying to remain(encouraging)

Um, tell me more about that.

21.

Page 23: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

RAINEYWell, like, I had this one pair ofboots. They were too small, but Iwas stubborn, or lazy or whatever, and I just kept wearing them.

CRAIGRight, okay.

Shrier leans over to Walter and whispers.

SHRIERStubborn, lazy, and ready forsuccess.

Walter laughs quietly. Rainey spins and glares at them, thenturns back to Craig.

CRAIGDon't worry about them. What wereyou saying?

RAINEYNothing, just, I kept wearing them, and eventually I like rubbed thetop off my big toe. It startedbleeding, and then some kind offungus got in there. By the time Ihad it looked at, they were like, what the fuck's wrong with you? Youalmost lost this fucking toe. Soyeah, shoes... they're important.

Scattered laughter. Rainey looks around, beginning toseethe.

CRAIGA little baffled( )

Uh huh. So that was great, um... apersonal anecdote. In an interview, though, sometimes it's best--

RAINEYLook, I get what we’re-- We don’thave to do this.

CRAIGDo what?

RAINEYWe’re not fucking challenged. Youdon’t have to treat us like--

22.

Page 24: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

CRAIGNo, it’s just an exercise, we’re--

RAINEYI know what it is. It’s ridiculous.

CRAIGWhat's ridiculous?

RAINEYThis. You.

An awkward silence. Shrier leans toward Walter again.

SHRIERSo, getting back to your fungalinfection...

Rainey shoots to his feet and steps quickly to Shrier.

RAINEYWhat the fuck are you saying?

SHRIERNothing. Relax.

RAINEYWhat were you whispering?

WALTERSorry, listen, we shouldn’t have--

RAINEYTurns to Walter( )

Did I say anything to you?

Craig approaches, trying to keep things calm.

CRAIGRainey, I really think --

RAINEYYou can shut up, Craig. Go sitdown.

Walter takes a step toward Rainey.

WALTERRainey, we’re sorry, really, wewon’t--

He puts a hand on Rainey's shoulder and Rainey recoils, reflexively knocking Walter in the jaw. Walter steps back, more stunned than hurt.

SHRIERWhat’s your problem, man?

The other guys surround Rainey, holding him back.

RAINEYStop fucking whispering about me!

SHRIEROkay, alright!

RAINEYI can hear you!

Rainey's face is red; he's furious, almost crying. Walterwatches him, worried.

HEIDI (O.C.)Okay. And then what happened?

INT. FACILITY OFFICE - AFTERNOON

Walter sits across from Heidi in her office -- the recorderon the desk between them, the aquarium quietly bubbling inthe corner.

WALTERThen? Nothing. That counselor sentus back to our rooms, and then theytold me to come here.

HEIDIHow did you feel about it?

WALTERAbout what? That he hit me?

HEIDIYes.

WALTERI mean, I don’t think it had verymuch to do with me.

Heidi looks at her notes.

HEIDIShrier, he was the one whispering?

WALTERYeah, but that wasn’t--

24.

Page 26: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

HEIDIAnd you know him? You guys were inthe same unit, is that right?

WALTERYeah, we go back. But honestly, Idon’t really think it had much todo with Shrier either.

HEIDIWhat do you mean?

WALTERI just think Rainey’s dealing withsome of his own shit. And I don’tblame him if it came out sideways. It happens to all of us sometimes.Me included.

HEIDIHow does it happen to you?

WALTERDifferent ways.

HEIDIGive me an example.

WALTERIt’s mostly like... I’ll get theseflashes, things I could do tomyself. It’s just tension.

HEIDIFor sure.

WALTERI wouldn’t really do it. But, okay, just an example. There’s a desk inmy room. It’s wooden, it’s gotthese sharp corners. And, the day Igot here, I don’t know why, but Isaw the desk and I imagined sittingdown and leaning way back and likeslamming my forehead into thecorner. As hard as I could, overand over.

HEIDIUh huh.

25.

Page 27: “Episode One”leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Homecoming_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf · Uh huh, sure. (To the other) For you? 2. CUSTOMER #2 I’ll take the patty melt. Does that come with fries?

WALTEROr my eye. Driving the corner intomy eye. But that was an extreme--It’s not like that all the time.

HEIDIUm hm. How often, would you say--

A very loud bird calls outside the window. Heidi cringes.

HEIDI (cont'd)I’m sorry, there’s this--

The bird calls again -- an awkward, comical cry.

HEIDI (cont'd)He’ll stop in a second.

He calls again. Heidi and Walter both wait, but the birdseems to have stopped.

WALTERThat’s incredible.

HEIDIIt’s driving me crazy. He’s somekind of protected species. We’renot allowed to touch him.

WALTERI could take care of him if youwant.

HEIDIWould you?

WALTERNo problem. Dead of night, fullcamo. He’d wake up in theEverglades. Everyone wins.

HEIDIOh, I’d love that. I’d be foreverin your debt.

There’s a silence. The bird has stopped.

WALTERSee? I did it with my mind.

Heidi laughs. They both enjoy the silence for a moment, andthen she looks back at her notebook.

HEIDIBut, other than that?

WALTERThan what?

HEIDIOther than those flashes youdescribe, are you having any otherissues?

WALTERIssues? No, not really.

HEIDIAny trouble sleeping?

WALTERYeah, a little. Nightmares, thingslike that.

HEIDIThat’s very normal. We can see ifone of the guys wants a roommatefor a few nights.

WALTERHuh. Like... What do you mean?

HEIDISome guys, when they first gethere, they find it difficultsleeping in a room alone, separatefrom their unit -- just a littletoo quiet, you know? So I can askaround, if anyone wants...

WALTEROkay, yeah, maybe.

HEIDIMaybe Shrier?

WALTEROh yeah, that’d be... I’d be okaywith that. That's allowed?

HEIDIOf course. That's why I'm here, tohelp you make this transition.Whatever supports that, that’s whatI’m gonna do. You've got a lot tolook forward to, Walter.

CARRASCOWhat were your duties at theInitiative?

HEIDII was a caseworker.

CARRASCOWhat did that involve?

HEIDII worked with soldiers. Theirmental health.

HEIDITherapy, counseling -- I told you.

CARRASCOAgain, can you see how that mightsound like you’re hiding something? That vagueness? Do you see howsomeone might have that reaction?

He takes out his wallet and shows her his ID.

CARRASCO (cont'd)How’s that?

HEIDIWhy are you here? What’s going on?
