CPAPUnits

Purpose:ContinuousPositiveAirwayPressure(CPAP)unitsareelectricaldevicesthatuseamotorandablowertomaintainaflowofairthatprovidespressuretoyourairways,preventingthemfromcollapsing.Bykeepingyourairwaysopenyoucanbreatheuninterruptedduringsleep.CPAPunitsrequireadoctor’sorderbeforeuse.Youmustalwaysfollowandabidebyallmanufacturer’soperatingandsafetyinstructions.

Types: TherearedifferenttypesofCPAPunitsbuttheyallfunctionbyapplyinglow-pressureairflowtoyourairways.Theairpressureholdsyourairwaysopen,preventingthecollapseofyourpalateandtonguefromobstructingyourairpassages.SomeCPAPunitshavearampingfeaturethatstartstheairpressureatalowerpressureandgraduallyincreasesovertime.Thisrampingfeaturecanassistyouingoingtosleep.

Accessories:InorderforthepressurefromtheCPAPunittokeepyouairwaysopen,amaskornasaldevicemustbeused.Thesemasksornasaldevicesmustbefittedtoyourface.Therearemanydifferentkindsofnasalmasks,nasalpillows,andoraldevicestochoosefromtofacilitateagoodsealandmaintainyourcomfort.Ifaheadgearapplianceisusedtosecurethemaskornasalpillows,itshouldbesnugenoughforagoodfitinallsleepingpositions.Yoursupplieshaveausefullifethatvariesdependinguponuseandwillneedtobereplacedoccasionally.Theseitemsusuallycanbesetuponrecurringdeliveryschedulessoyoudon’thavetomakeaspecialtripintoyourpharmacyormedicalsupplier.Theseaccessoriesalsoneedseparateprescriptionsandmustbeproperlyfitted.Humidifiersaresometimesnecessarytomoistentheair.

Use:EachCPAPunithasonepressuresettingthatmustbesetandverifiedbyyourpharmacyormedicalsupplier.Neveradjustthispressuresettingonyourown.Agoodpracticewhenpreparingtogotobedistoputyourheadgearandmask(orpillows)oninfrontofamirror.Onceyouhavetheheadgearandmaskon,getintobedandattachthetubing,thenturntheuniton.Itisacceptabletograduallyworkuptowearingthedevicetheentirenight.Yourcompliancewithyourphysician’streatmentplanisveryimportant.NootherpieceofmedicalequipmentaltersyourlifestylelikeaCPAPunit.Ifyoulookathowmanytimesyouawakeneachnight,andthelackofrestfulsleepyouhavehad,itiseasytolearntosleepwiththeCPAPdeviceon.

Maintenance:CPAPunitsshouldbekeptcleanbyusingadampclothandmilddishwashingdetergenteveryfewdays.Neverusealcoholoranyalcohol-basedsolutiontocleantheunit.Alwaysunplugtheunitbeforecleaning.TheCPAPunitmustbecompletelydrybeforepluggingitbackin.Theair-inletfiltershouldbecheckeddaily.Ifthefilterisreusable,itshouldbeabletowithstandcleaninginasolutionoflukewarmwaterandantibacterialdishwashingdetergentandrinsedthoroughlywithtapwater.Ifdisposable,thefiltershouldbechangedwhendirty.Nevercleanyoumaskornasaldeviceinthedishwasher.Yourtubingcanbecleanedwiththesameantibacterialsoapandwaterandhungverticallytodry.AlwaysallowallCPAPaccessoriestocompletelyairdrybeforereattachingthemtotheCPAPunit.EachCPAPdeviceshouldberegularlypressurecheckedaccordingtomanufacturer’sguidelines.Ifyouareusingahumidifier,thedistilledwatermustbedrainedandthehumidifiercleaneddaily.

BIPAPUnits

machine.Sometimesaslightchangeinbodypositionwillhelprelievethis.Thisshoulddecreaseasyoubecomeacclimatedtoyourmachine.

InformationonusingyourCPAP/BIPAPmachine

• Untilyouarecomfortablefittingyourmask,tryfittingitinfrontofamirror.

• Pleasemakesureyourfaceiscleanbeforewearingyourmask.Itistheoilsfromyourskinthatbreakdownthesealonthemaskandcauseittofitpoorly.

• YoumustaddDISTLLEDWATERONLYtothehumidifierchamberonadailybasis.

• Washthehumidifierchamberfrequentlyinsoapywater.Rinseandletairdryfortheday.(Remember,youwillbebreathingwatervaporfromthischamber,sothecleaner,thenbetter.)

• Cleanyoumaskfrequentlywithmildsoapywater,alongwithyourheadgear.(Again,youarewearingthisonyourfaceandbreathingthroughit,sothecleanerthebetter.Itisespeciallyimportanttowashitwhenyouaresick.)

• Strivetogetatleast4(ormore)hoursofusenightly.Mostinsurancerequirethatwebeabletoproveyouareusingyourmachineenoughtojustifytheirpayingtherentalfee.

• Remember,usingaPAPdeviceisalifestylechangeandsometimeschangecanbedifficulttoaccept(eventhoughtheendresultislikelyanimprovement.)

Day1:SetupDay

Pleaseaskthepersonsettingupyourequipmenttoaddressanyquestionsorconcernsyoumayhaveregardingtheequipmentortherapy.

*Remember,youneedtostriveforaminimumoffour(ormore)hoursdailyofequipmentuse,atleast70%ofthetime,withinacontinuous30-daysperiodinordertoachievecompliance.

Days2-45:YoushouldbecontactedwithinafewdaysofyourinitialsetupbyamemberofourAuBurnPharmacystafftoseehowyouaredoingwiththeequipment.

*Shouldyouhaveanyproblemsorquestions,pleasedon’thesitatetocontactourAuBurnPharmacystaffandtheywillattempttoresolvethemforyou.

Days46-90:Duringthistimeyouwillneedtocontactandscheduleafollow-upvisitwithyourSleepLabphysician(ifonehasnotalreadybeenscheduled)sothattheymayavaluateanddeterminecompliance.Theymayaskyoutobringyourmachineorpossiblyjustthedatacardsothattheycandownloadyourusageinformation.

*Ifatanytimeduringthis90-daytimeframeweshouldcallandleaveamessage,pleaserespondassoonaspossible.Wemayneedinformationtoensurecontinuedcoveragebyyourinsuranceprovider.

MaskLeaks

Liftthemaskfromyoufacejustabittoletitfillwithair.Letitlaybackdownonyourfaceandmakeanyadjustmentstotheheadgearstrapsyouneed.Themaskshouldfitcomfortably,andnotfeeltight.

Don’tworryaboutminorairleaksatthispoint.Foraminorairleakyoudon’tneedtotightenyourheadgear.Justtryrunningyourfingertipalongtheseambetweenthemask’soutercushioncoverandyourfacialskin.Thisshouldeliminateaminorleak.

ForCPAPmaskleaksneartheeyes,liftthemaskfromyourfacejustabit.Onceitrefillswithairletitlaybackdownonyourfacejustalittlebitlowonthebridgeofyournose.Nowslidethemaskupthebridgeofyournoseintoitsproperposition.Thisshouldbothsealanyminorleaks,andturntheedgesofthemaskcushioncoverundersoitdoesn’tcutintoyourskin.

ForCPAPmaskleaksunderoraroundthelowerpartofthenosetrytwitchingyournose,orwaggingyourjawbackandforthormovingyourlipsaround.Oftenthatisallthatisneededtosealthiskindofminorleak.

Nowturnovertoonesideandmakeanynecessaryminoradjustmentsforleaksasabove.Thenturnovertoyourbackandtoyourotherside,makinganynecessaryminoradjustments.Atnotimeshouldthemaskfittootightlyorfeeluncomfortable.Thelongeryouwearthemaskwhenfittedtootightly,thetighterandmoreuncomfortableitisgoingtofeel.
