Reflection on Our Cover

The Sermon on the Mount continues. Jesus speaks as a teacher, stressing that he has not come to abolish the law or the prophets but to complete their teaching. He contrasts his teaching with that of the scribes and Pharisees, calling on his followers to let their holiness surpass theirs. His bottom line must become ours. Although Jesus’ teaching was based on the common tradition of Israel, his interpretations were so unprece-dented that some accused him of having rejected that tradition. Jesus insists that his interpretations really offer the fuller meaning of the tradition. The contrast that Jesus sets up is not between himself and the law, but between his interpretation of the law and that of the scribes and Pharisees. He criticizes them for insisting on the minutiae of the law at the expense of the right-eousness that is at its heart. • How does the “law of the Lord” influence your life?

SAINT VALENTINE’S STORY St. Valentine, for whom this holiday is of course named, was an actual historical figure. He was a Roman physician who was also a Christian priest during the days of the early church. This was at a time when Christians saw tremendous persecu-tion and many practiced in secret. There are actually a couple versions of the Valentine’s Day story. One version has it that Valentine was so loved by the children of the town that they would constantly write him notes speaking of their affection--hence the origin of exchanging valentines. In the other version of the story, Valentine is working to heal a blind boy and is arrested by Roman soldiers for his work as an “undercover priest”. Valentine is shortly thereafter sentenced to die. And yet before he is taken off to be executed, he takes the time to write to the little blind boy a note explaining to him Jesus' love, enclosing a small treat. According to this story, when the boy eats the treat his eyesight is miraculously re-stored, and he is able to see well enough to read Valentine's note--which is, of course, at the exact same moment that Val-entine is executed.

Please continue to keep in your prayers our 67 Confirma-tion candidates who will be receiving the Sacrament of

Confirmation this weekend.

Dear Friends at St. Veronica, Confirmation: This weekend Confirmation will be con-ferred on 67 of the young men and women of St. Veron-ica parish. When Bishop William Justice confirms them, they will receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. As we share their joy, let us wish and pray that these young peo-ple may tangibly experience the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithful-ness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22). First Reconciliation: On February 5th, 35 of our young-sters in Grade 2 of St. Veronica School made the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation. Among other things, I told the children three simple things: that Jesus loves them, that Jesus forgives them, and that Jesus needs them. They made really heartfelt first Reconciliations, which was a moving experience. The families of these children gath-ered were inspired by the children’s piety and charmed by their songs. Msgr. Michael Padazinski and Fr. Joe Walsh who assisted in this Sacrament mentioned that it was one of the finest First Reconciliation ceremonies they have witnessed. These children will make their First Communion on March 5th. Please keep them in your prayers and hearts. Valentine’s Day: The theme of red (Spirit’s tongues of fire) on the Confirmation Day (Feb. 13th) will overflow into the next day, Valentine’s Day, symbolized by red-hot hearts. As we celebrate various forms of human love, including romantic love, we realize that it’s God’s most amazing and everlasting and unconditional love that makes all human love possible. God is love. Let us be captivated by the heart of Christ, pierced and opened for love of us. May we be more deeply dedicated to a life of love--- to love God and others, generously and selflessly. Your friend and pastor, Father Charles Puthota
