On Jan. 4, United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a memorandum on marijuana enforcement. His issued statement comes at a time where 30 states, and the District of Columbia have already legalized the use of cannabis for medical or recre-ational purposes.
“Given the Department’s well-established general prin-ciples, previous nationwide guidance specific to marijuana enforcement is unnecessary and is rescinded effective im-mediately,” Sessions stated in the memorandum.

En marzo 2018 el público podrá disfrutar del nuevo parque, el Confluence Park, que está ubicado en 310 W. Mitchell St. La inversión de $13 millones de la Fundación San Antonio River en Conflu-ence Park hará que sea un lugar en donde los visitantes podrán disfrutar de lo último en ecología, programas de educación paras niños y mu-chas sorpresas más.
El nuevo parque está dise-ñado para inspirar a los es-tudiantes y visitantes a invo-lucrarse con las vías de los ríos regionales y practicar la gestión ambiental. Un proyec-to histórico donde el arte y la ciencia se encuentran.

medicinal and recreational pur-poses in separate forms, such as the plant, CBD oil, edibles and other forms of the product.
Compassionate Cultivations (CC), only one of three Texan CBD oil distributing compa-nies for medicinal use, made nationwide strides by opening its doors in November 2017. Since then, their focus has been on preparing their first ever crop to be processed into medicine for epilepsy patients.
Despite the crackdown, Mor-ris Denton, CEO of CC isn’t backing down. He remarked that CC’s goal is to help those suffering, and isn’t concerned.
“It doesn’t change a thing for us, not one thing,” Morris Denton, CEO of Compas-

Aunque todavía falta tiem-po, Confluence Park ya está empezando a planear los cam-pamentos del verano 2018. Amerman añadió que están trabajando con organizaciones sin fines de lucro, así que el público podrá esperar varias actividades divertidas.
“Hay muchos programas
diferentes, como de fotografía, de naturaleza, pintura, al igual que programas para veteranos y para mayores. Así que esta-mos trabajando en muchos niveles; realmente está al límite de tu imaginación el tipo de programas que pueden llegar al parque”, añadió el director ejecutivo de San Antonio River Foundation.
Con la educación ambiental como su objetivo central, Con-fluence Park se concibe como una herramienta de enseñanza interactiva que inspirará una mayor comprensión de los eco-tipos de Texas y la dinámica de cuencas hidrográficas. Por eso uno de los campamentos que estarán ofreciendo durante el verano tendrán el objetivo de incorporar la fotografía con la naturaleza.

Headquarters, located at 2301 San Pedro Ave. inside the Rose Bush, is ready to showcase a different kind of business in the food truck lot. Headquarters offers haircuts, dry cut, bang trim and sham-poo style that caters to cus-tomers of all sorts who need a unique experience in and out of the salon.
Customer service rol ls through a design consultation where Dickey and his wife, Ju-liette Montoya, gain informa-tion to make recommendations for the best cut for a customer’s lifestyle. Next is the shampoo
ritual where one is treated with Aveda products and aroma-therapy, light massage and a hot towel treatment with men receiving an express facial.
It then goes into a cus-tomized cut and style where Dickey and Montoya use their combined 19 years of experi-ence to create a cut for all hair types. Once they are done, Dickey and Montoya build a maintenance plan to accom-modate their clients’ demands, allowing them to plan ahead to their next service and educate them on home care to main-tain that salon look.
“We made this menu to try to meet the demands of mod-ern time and modern people. Sometimes it’s not what people can afford financially, but what people can afford as per time,” said Dickey to La Prensa. “Not many people have an hour where they can sit down and
relax and get their hair cut. So we designed a menu whether you have 15 minutes, 30 min-utes or an hour to tailor what suits the client and their hair. Their hair has a personality just like we do.”
Dickey’s entrepreneurial spirit started at a young age as he watched his family run their glass business and also worked for them. After finish-ing high school, he wanted to pursue a degree in education, but his plans quickly changed as he switched to cosmetology school.
“From that point, I have been able to let all of my pas-sions converge over the years,” continued Dickey. “First I was an operator where I was doing haircutting for the first three years of my career, then I worked at an institute for

La marcha más numerosa en el país en memoria del defen-sor de los derechos civiles, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., reunió a una entusiasta y pacífica muchedumbre calculada en más de doscientas mil almas que, portando emblemas y
pancartas, promovían la igual-dad y la justicia a lo largo de la ruta en MLK Boulevard en el corazón del Eastside.
El lunes 15 de enero, después de una ceremonia cívica en MLK Academy (3501 MLK Drive), a las 10 de la mañana la imponente columna humana emprendió el camino presidida por el alcalde de la ciudad de San Antonio, Ron
Nirenberg, acompañado por miembros del concejo de la ciudad y los integrantes de MLK Commission, cubriendo la ruta acostumbrada hasta lle-gar al Parque Pittman-Sullivan.
Los inicios de esta mani-festación popular en pro de la igualdad civil en San Antonio ocurrieron en abril de 1968 a poco tiempo del asesinato del Dr. King, cuando un grupo de

Aviso de Reunión Pública
ciudadanos del Eastside –guia-dos por un pastor– recorrieron el vecindario en honor del Dr. King. A raíz de esta pequeña manifestación la asistencia fue en aumento y cobrando mayor formalidad a través de los años hasta el punto en que durante la administración del alcalde Henry Cisneros fue integrada la entidad Martin
Luther King Commission y el evento alcanzó la importancia, tradición y asistencia actual, contando con la participación de numerosos sectores de la ciudad.
Fue notable en este año la participación numérica de la juventud, principalmente alumnos de las universidades y colegios locales quienes
marcharon al lado de traba-jadores de la ciudad y traba-jadores de todas las empresas estatales.
En esta oportunidad se unió a la celebración el Food Bank de San Antonio y se orga-nizaron colectas de alimentos enlatados y empacados en el sitio inicial de la marcha y en el Parque Pittman-Sullivan.

El 10 de enero dio inicio San Antonio Cocktail Conference (SACC) con el evento “Women’s Shaking It Up”.
SACC es una semana llena de eventos sociales en donde el enfoque es obtener fondos para ser donados a organizaciones que trabajan en pro de niños en la ciudad.
El tema este año fue super-héroes en donde la gente pudo disfrutar de los últimos cócteles, comida y música en ZAZA Gardens.
En entrevista telefónica previa al evento, la directora de Hous-ton Street Charities y San Anto-nio Cocktail Conference, Cathy Seigel, habló sobre la importan-cia de SACC y de qué manera las personas puede donar dinero durante el año.
“Todas las ganancias de todo el año van directamente a or-ganizaciones de niños, aunque nuestra conferencia de cócteles es una de nuestros mayores proyec-tos. En ocasiones hacemos otros eventos más pequeños, pero principalmente es una conferen-cia de cócteles”, explicó Seigel.
Seigel continuó la entrevista hablando sobre el evento “Wom-en’s Shaking It Up”, el cual se llevó a cabo el 10 de enero en ZAZA Gardens.
El tema de este año fue ‘Mu-jeres Súperhéroes’, que se puedo disfrutar durante toda esa noche.
San Antonio Cocktail Confe-rence inició hace unos años para destacar el éxito de las mujeres en trabajos no tradicionales.
“Women’s Shaking It Up es un evento que comenzamos hace varios años para resaltar el tremendo éxito en roles no tradi-cionales de las mujeres. Hace muchos años no habrías visto a una mujer que es bartender o no hubieras encontrado una mujer como chef ejecutiva. No tenía-mos estos trabajos de alto perfil en esta industria, ni hubieras encontrado una mujer que ayuda a un entrenador de la NBA”, explicó Seigel, añadiendo que dicha fiesta celebró el cambio y el éxito de las mujeres.
Asimismo, Seigel compartió lo que más disfruta de SACC ya que estas actividades son orga-nizadas por un equipo pequeño.
“Me encanta cuando todo el trabajo duro de un pequeño equipo y un gran grupo de volun-tarios y socios maravillosos se unen y entran a la fiesta. Veo a la gente sonriendo y escucho una charla feliz y recibo un correo electrónico después del evento diciendo lo maravilloso que estaba. ¡Todo es para obras de caridad para niños y no puede ser mejor!”.
Para finalizar la entrevista tele-fónica, la directora de Houston
Street Charities y San Antonio Cocktail Conference invitó al público a que done, ya que los niños de nuestra ciudad son el futuro.
“Los niños no pueden ayu-darse a sí mismos, tenemos que ayudarlos y ciertamente hay mu-chas buenas causas en nuestra ciudad y desearía poder ayudar-los a todos. Nuestro enfoque principal son las organizaciones benéficas e invitamos al público a ver los nombres en nuestro sitio web. Sino, también para encontrar algo que le hable, que puede ser su talento, su tiempo o donativo monetario para que ayude a los niños”, finalizó Seigel.
SACC es el primer evento de su tipo en Texas pero no es el único, ya que hay varios modelos en todo el país. Lo que hace diferente a SACC del resto es que el 100 por ciento de las ganancias se dividen entre las organizaciones seleccionadas de niños.
Los fondos se recaudan a través de la venta de entradas a una variedad de eventos que van desde cócteles elaborados hasta degustaciones guiadas y semi-narios educativos. Después de visitar “Gather-ing at The Waters: 12,000 Years of People”, la nueva exposición de The Witte Mu-seum, el observar el torrente y el escuchar el murmullo del Río San Antonio cruzando Brack-enridge Park no será el mismo.
Esta nueva exhibición insta-lada en la Kathleen and Curtis Gunn Gallery puede ser media-na de tamaño, pero es enorme en cantidad de historia de esta región local de San Antonio.
Y que “Gathering” esté insta-lada este museo ubicado en las riberas del Río San Antonio, en Brackenridge Park, la hace to-davía más especial. ¿La razón? En ella se descubre que impor-tantes momentos en la historia del desarrollo de San Antonio, que este año celebra 300 años de fundación, sucedie ron jus-tamente en esta zona del noro-este del downtown.
El bisonte, que es el ícono de “Gatherings at The Waters”, es un importante tesoro de la exhibición, pues la osamenta real de uno de estos imponen-tes animales, encontrada cerca del Blue Hola (origen del Río San Antonio, dentro de los terrenos de University of Incar-nate Word, a unos minutos del museo), es un símbolo del paso del tiempo y supervivencia de
la fauna y los humanos.La presencia de estos ani-
males en esta region de Texas data desde la Edad de Hielo cuando los Clovis (muy anti-guos habitantes de esta región que vivieron de 11,500 a 10,800 años atrás) cazaban los grandes mamíferos como mamuts, mastodontes, tigres dientes de sable, bisontes gigantes que caminaban por estas tierras.
Por tanto, si se explora “Gatherings” cronológica-mente se comprende el porqué de la exposición de una gran variedad puntas de lanza he-chas de roca (utilizadas para cazar y destazar los animales) desarrolladas por los pueblos que descendieron de los Clo-vis: desde los Toyah, Jumano y Papaya. Justamente, estos últimos, fueron los nativos americanos que tuvieron el primer contacto, registrado, con los conquistadores espa-ñoles en 1691 en algún lugar del actual Brackenridge Park.
“Congregándose a lo largo de las Aguas: 12 Mil Años de Pueblos” es una exhibición de corte arqueológico y antropo-lógico que describe como las diferentes poblaciones hu-manas en el sur de Texas se asentaron y desarrollaron sus vidas a lo largo del río.
El cambio climático, con intervalos de periodos muy fríos y calientes, explica la
migración al sur de Texas en periodo cálido, de algunos animales como el bisonte y como fueron cazados por los habitantes y sus pieles comer-cializadas.
Esos mismos periodos cáli-dos explican la tradición de cocinar en rocas calientes y el tipo de comida ingerido, como caracoles o venados.
Asimismo, al asentarse a lo largo del río, los pobladores también dejaron sus cemen-terios a lo largo del Río San Antonio. Por ejemplo, un sitio sagrado está ubicado en Ol-mos Basin, también cerca del Brackenridge Park, donde se encuentra el museo. Allí se han encontrado también artefactos hechos por los Clovis.
La última parte de “Gather-ing”, por su cronología, es un pequeño vistazo al primer en-cuentro entre los exploradores españoles y los indios Papaya en 1691.
Fragmentos de cerámica, cuentas de Rosario y una antigua espuela de hierro des-criben y marcan claramente la transición de una sociedad de nativos americanos a los inicios del San Antonio espa-ñol, cuya influencia de seguro se desarrollará ampliamente en la siguiente exhibición que The Witte abrirá el 3 de marzo de este año: “Confluence and Cultura: 300 Years of San Antonio History” (Confluencia
y Cultura: 300 Años de la His-toria de San Antonio).
“Gathering at the Waters: 12,000 Years of People” es un viaje desde la Edad de Hielo hasta la llegada de los españoles. Frío y calor, calor y frío, como sigue siendo normal en el sur de Texas, y como los humanos y demás seres vivos
hicieron del Río San Antonio su columna vertebral e iden-tidad.
Esta exhibición puede ser visitada de ahora en adelante hasta el 1 de julio de 2018. Es presentada por San Antonio River Authority y patrocinada con fondos de John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation de la
San Antonio Area Foundation y Elizabeth y Robert R. Lende. Para visitarla debe agregar $5 dólares al boleto de entrada general del museo.

50 niños y niñas originarios de países como Filipinas, Iraq, Jordania, España, México, Re-ino Unido, Dubai, entre otros, recibieron el certificado que los acredita como nuevos ciudada-nos americanos durante una pequeña ceremonia llevada a cabo el pasado sábado 13 de enero en el DoSeum.
El evento formó parte de la
DreamWeek 2018.Durante la ceremonia, re-
alizada por el United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (U.S.C.I.S.), las sonri-sas de los niños se igualaba a la de sus orgullosos padres a la hora de cantar el Himno Nacio-nal, levantar su mano derecha para prestar juramento y recibir su certificado de ciudadanía de mano del alcalde de San Anto-nio, Ron Nirenberg.
La oradora invitada al evento fue Betsaida López, joven de ori-
gen mexicano, quien se dirigió a los niños recalcándoles que al ser ahora ciudadanos americanos tienen muchas más oportuni-dades, y podrán en su momento ejercer importantes derechos como el voto. Pero también le aseguró que tienen una “enorme responsabilidad”, la de defender también el derecho de otros. La joven enfatizó, asimismo, que cada uno de ellos trae sus va-lores, tradiciones y culturas que hacen de los Estados Unidos un país multicultural.

San Antonio FC re-signed decorated Colombian midfield-er Rafa Castillo for the 2018 USL season pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the con-tract were not disclosed.
“We are pleased to have Rafa re-join us for the 2018 campaign,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “His pro-fessionalism and appetite for the game day-to-day inspire the players around him, and he will continue to make this team better with his contributions on and off the field.”
Castillo returns to the Alamo City club for his third season after he tallied four goals in 17 appearances throughout the 2017 campaign. Castillo scored the first home goal of the season at Toyota Field and converted three times from the penalty spot along the way. The center-midfielder featured in 1,343 USL minutes for SAFC, ranking fourth on the team in goals scored (four) and
shots (23), while also ranking third in shots on target (14). The Colombian featured in the starting eleven regularly until an injury at Reno 1868 FC on August 12 kept him unavail-able for selection until the final match of the regular season.
In addition, Castillo played 19 minutes as a substitute in the USL Western Conference Semifinal, during which he recorded one shot and one shot on goal. The midfielder also played 201 minutes in two appearances for the club in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this season.
“Being back with SAFC for another season is a true bless-ing,” Castillo said. “I’m thank-ful to the coaching staff, the front office and my teammates for continuing to show faith in me and for once again giving me the opportunity to repre-sent this organization. The fans are the heart of this club and I’ll continue to do my best to represent this city well.”
Overall in his two seasons with San Antonio FC, Castillo has appeared in 49 games in all competitions, making 45
starts, scoring nine goals and recording two assists in 3,937 minutes. The midfielder’s min-ute total ranks third all-time in club history behind defenders Greg Cochrane and Stephen McCarthy, and Castillo’s nine goals are second-most in team history. The 37-year-old has also captained the team on nu-merous occasions throughout his two seasons with the club.
Prior to joining SAFC in 2016, Castillo enjoyed an impressive two years with the now-defunct San Antonio Scor-pions, where he helped lead the club to a championship in 2014. Along with a long and illustrious career in his native Colombia where he won the 2009 Primera A Clausura Championship, Castillo also played and won a champion-ship in the first division of Egypt before moving to the United States to join the San Antonio soccer community. The midfielder has also made nine appearances for the Co-lombian national team from 2001-03, scoring three goals.

Four Dozen Days Until Tip-Off: As of Friday, Jan. 18, 46 days remain until the 2018 tournament tips off. It begins in Katy (Texas) with a pair of men’s games Wednes-day (March 7) in its four-day tournament culminating with Saturday’s (March 10) cham-pionship tilt. The women’s tourney commences the next day, Thursday (March 8), and runs through Sunday’s (March 11) championship game.
Second Decade: The City of Katy, the Merrell Center and the Southland Conference are partnering for an 11th consecutive tournament at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. In the 10 men’s tournaments played in Katy, seven dif-ferent member institutions
have raised the championship trophy, including 2017 cham-pion New Orleans and fellow current members Stephen. F. Austin, Northwestern State, Lamar, and Sam Houston. La ansiedad es una reacción física y emocional que sucede ante el estrés. De acuerdo al Instituto Nacional de Salud Mental, aproximadamente 40 millones de adultos sufren de ansiedad en Estados Unidos.
Desde el inicio del 2018 he visto cómo se ha incrementado la ansiedad y el estrés en per-sonas cercanas y lejanas a mí. Este problema puede llegar a causar complicaciones en la salud, por lo que es importante aprender sobre los síntomas que surgen durante un ataque de ansiedad, y las distintas maneras de controlarlo.
Al convertirse en un ataque, la ansiedad puede producir náuseas, mareos, angustia, falta de respiración, palpi-taciones, sudoración, dolor o molestias en el tórax, tensión y otros problemas que po-drían interferir en la vida de la persona.
Los ataques de pánico o crisis de ansiedad son perío-dos en los que se padece de malestar intenso y temor que puede durar de minutos a horas.
Para combatir la ansiedad se pueden utilizar estrategias para la mente y el cuerpo.
Acepta que no puedes con-trolar todo. Pon tu estrés en otra perspectiva y piensa si realmente tu situación es tan mala como lo piensas.
Da lo mejor de ti. En lugar de buscar la perfección, sién-tete orgulloso de lo que has logrado hasta el momento.
Mantén una actitud positiva. Haz un esfuerzo por sacar de tu mente los pensamientos negativos y reemplazarlos por positivos.
Aprende a conocerte a ti mismo. ¿Qué es lo que te agobia? Define si tu problema es en casa, en el trabajo, con amistades o algo más. Escrí-belo o dilo en voz alta para lograr asimilarlo más detal-ladamente.
Aliméntate sanamente. Aunque no lo creas, eres lo que comes. No te malpases y haz tus comidas a tiempo. Mantén a la mano snacks sa-ludables como nueces y frutas.
Duerme bien. Cuando estás estresado, tu cuerpo te pide dormir y descansar, por lo que es importante tomar tus ocho horas de sueño al día.
Haz ejercicio. Siempre te
pue de beneficiar a sentirte mejor y mantenerte saludable.
Limita tu dosis de bebidas alcohólicas y con cafeína. Estos dos agravan la ansie-dad y detonan los ataques de ansiedad.
Ante un ataque de pánico, siempre toma acción.
Siempre que sientas estrés, respira profundo inhalando y exhalando lentamente durante el día. Sé paciente, pues toma tiempo combatirlo.
Lentamente cuenta hasta diez. Repítelo cuantas veces sea necesario, pues esto podría ayudarte a recuperar la calma.
Toma tiempo para ti. Prac-tica actividades que te relajen como yoga, escuchar música, meditar, o recibir un masaje. Al final del día recuerda que te lo mereces.
Y cuando sientas que esto se ha convertido en una situación que te cuesta trabajo controlar, entonces pide ayuda y compár-teselo a algún amigo, familiar, o compañero de trabajo. Una persona que puede estar afectada por contaminantes de emisiones de aire de la instalación tiene derecho a solicitar una audiencia. Para solicitar una audiencia, una persona debe de residir permanentemente dentro de 440 yardas de la instalación que se propone. Si se solicita una audiencia de caso impugnado, debe presentar lo siguiente: (1) su nombre (o para un grupo o una asociación, un representante oficial), dirección, número de teléfono de día; (2) el nombre del solicitante y número del permiso; (3) la declaración “[yo/nosotros] solicito/solicitamos
una audiencia de caso impugnado”; (4) una descripción específica de cómo se vería afectado adversamente por la solicitud y las emisiones atmosféricas de la instalación de manera que no es común para el público en general; (5) la ubicación y distancia de su propiedad con relación a la instalación; (6) una descripción de cómo usa la propiedad, lo cual podría ser afectado por la instalación; y (7) una lista de todas las cuestiones de hecho en disputa que presentó durante el período de comentarios. Si la petición la hace un grupo o una asociación, deben de identificar el miembro o los miembros que tienen derecho a solicitar una audiencia por nombre y dirección física. Los intereses que el grupo o la asociación busca proteger se deben de identificar. También puede pre-sentar los ajustes que propone hacer a la solicitud que satisficieran sus preocupaciones. Acción de la TCEQ. Después del plazo final para someter comentarios públicos, el director ejecutivo considerará los comentarios y preparará una respuesta a todos los comentarios públicos relevantes y materiales o significativos. lo que sí me sorprende es que tanta gente se haya tardado tanto tiempo en entender que el ocupante de la Casa Blanca tiene ideas racistas.
El racismo es creer que una raza o grupo étnico es superior a otro. Y eso es exactamente lo que dijo Trump en la Casa Blanca el jueves pasado en una reunión con seis congresistas. ¿Por qué tenemos aquí a tanta gente de países de mierda? dijo Trump, según el reporte original del diario The Wash-ington Post.
El presidente y los congre-sistas discutían una propuesta para dar visas o protección mi-gratoria a inmigrantes de Hatí y de África.
Eso no es todo. Luego dijo: ¿Por qué queremos tener aquí a gente de Haití? y sugirió, en cambio, que sería mejor traer a gente de Noruega. Esto es suficiente para entender los prejuicios del presidente de los Estados Unidos. Su visión, claramente expresada en la Oficina Oval, favorece a los inmigrantes blancos europeos frente a los descendientes de

En esa reunión con el presi-dente había, al menos, otras seis personas. El senador Demócrata Dick Durbin quien estuvo presente, confirmó a la prensa lo que dijo Trump. “En la historia de la Casa Blanca y de la Oficina Oval, ningún pres-idente había dicho las palabras que yo escuché ayer”, aseguró Durbin. Dijo cosas llenas de odio y las dijo repetidamente.”
Pero esta no es la primera vez en que Trump hace co-mentarios racistas. Su campaña electoral comenzó en junio del 2015 con un brutal comentario racista. Trump dijo que los in-migrantes mexicanos eran vio-ladores, criminales y narcotrafi-cantes. Muchos de nosotros, en la prensa hispana de Estados Unidos y en América Latina, denunciamos los comentarios de Trump. Pero mucha gente no nos quiso hacer caso. Creían que éramos demasiado sen-
sibles a las groseras declaracio-nes de un candidato presiden-cial, y que no era suficiente un solo comentario negativo para acusar a un político de racismo.
Hoy sabemos que sí tenía-mos razón. Los comentarios de Trump en el verano del 2015 fueron tan racistas como los que acaba de hacer en 2018. Esas expresiones llenas de racismo, antes de Trump, hubieran descalificado a cual-quier candidato presidencial. Pero entonces no nos pusieron suficiente atención, y hoy es de-masiado tarde porque Trump ya es presidente.
Eso no es todo. Hay más ejemplos de racismo. Trump durante años cuestionó que Barack Obama, el primer presi-dente afroamericano en la historia, hubiera nacido en Estados Unidos. También dudó públicamente del trabajo que estaba haciendo el juez, Gonzalo Curiel, solo porque sus padres nacieron en México. Y durante la campaña electoral propuso que no se le permitiera entrar a los musulmanes al país. Son, todas, expresiones cargadas de prejuicios raciales y estereotipos.

Feb. 1-28 is celebrated as Black His-tory Month here in San Antonio as well as the entire nation.
W e c a n agree or disagree that as a nation we have come a long way from slavery to refining the cultural history of the nu-merous contributions of Black Americans to our country.
It is also assumed that we have not completed that jour-ney in melding all Americans of various skin tones into that melting pot of diverse cultures and all races. Only then can we say we have truly “overcome.”
Seven days ago we celebrat-ed the 31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March down a two-and-a-half mile stretch from Martin Luther King Jr. Academy on MLK Avenue to the Pittman- Sullivan Park off N. New Braunfels. The street was once again lined with thousands of cheering spectators. Estimates are 100
thousand plus participants. Every year a tape of King’s
“I Have a Dream” speech can be heard blaring for half a mile down the road as partici-pants march along the avenue to the final destination of the park. At Pittman-Sullivan, gospel singers sing gospel songs and various speakers of all backgrounds address the crowd.
Some of those speakers over the years have included the first African-American Mayor of San Antonio, Ivy Taylor, the first African- American Fire Chief Charles Hood and the first African-Ameri-can County Commissioner Tommy Calvert. Even Martin Luther King III was a guest speaker one year.
History reminds us of the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education landmark Supreme Court decision that declared state laws establishing sepa-rate public school for black and white students uncon-stitutional. In most places at that time it included Hispanic students as well. I was eight years old at the time.
By the time I became a teacher, I taught many stu-dents of different races. I taught a history class or two over the years, and covered some of those statistics and information in the classroom. The triumph paved the way for integration and was a ma-jor victory of the civil rights movement at the time.
As one who has seen major changes in my life time from segregation to the turmoil of the sixties to the eventual Na-tional Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday that was signed into law in 1983, I am still amazed at our progress.
I remember when Presi-dent Ronald Reagan actu-ally signed it, and it was first observed three years later. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
Back in 1964 the year I graduated high school in June, the Congress passed the Civil rights Act of 1964 on July 2 that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

No existe duda, hay un racista encerrado en la Casa Blanca. No aceptar a gente de una región predominantemente afrodes-cendiente y/o mestiza es un prejuicio cognitivo, un hecho consumado de discriminación y racismo.
El sociólogo y profesor uni-versitario estadounidense John E. Farley nos permite apreciar, comparar y diferenciar estos tres términos.
Por una parte, el prejuicio es una actitud o una creencia positiva o negativa de una per-sona hacia a otra. Dicha actitud puede también ser dirigida hacia un grupo étnico-nacional o ha-cia un grupo caracterizado por su género, religión u orientación sexual.
El prejuicio puede provenir, indistintamente, de personas pertenecientes al grupo domi-nante de la sociedad (euroameri-canos) o grupos subordinados (afrodescendientes, latinos, asiáticos, islámicos, etc.).
Y por la otra, la discrimi-nación es una conducta o una acción consumada y hace referen cia al trato desigual por parte de un individuo o un grupo hacia otro por el simple
hecho de que pertenece a otro grupo en particular.
La discriminación ocurre nor-malmente de arriba hacia abajo; es decir, de grupos dominantes a grupos subordinados, aunque también puede suceder al revés.
El prejuicio no es penado por la ley, mientras que la discrimi-nación sí lo es. El Acta de 1964, Título VII, destaca que es ilegal que los empleadores discriminen en base “a la raza, religión, sexo, origen nacional o color de la persona”.
Es racismo, por su parte, es muy similar al prejuicio. Hace referencia a la actitud y creencia que favorece a un grupo sobre otro; sin embargo, a diferencia del prejuicio, el racismo puede
incluir la conducta.El racismo, puede o no ser
penado por la ley; o puede, como sucedió durante el perio-do esclavista, tomar parte del ordenamiento jurídico nacional, ser tolerado y convertirse en una normalidad de la sociedad.
Analicemos lo destacado por Donald Trump en frente de senadores demócratas y republi-canos. El mandamás de la Casa Blanca cree que las poblaciones del continente africano, de Haití y El Salvador no deben ser aceptados en nuestro país porque provienen de “agujeros de mierda”, mientras que de-beríamos estimular la migración de Noruega, cuya población es predominantemente “blanca”.
En términos académicos y de acuerdo a las divisiones que hace John Farley, lo que Trump manifestó encaja dentro de lo que se conoce como Prejuicio Cognitivo o la creencia de que los grupos dominantes mayo-ritarios son biológicamente superiores a los grupos subor-dinados. Asimismo, lo hecho por Trump es una acción dis-criminatoria consumada y es una conducta racista contra un grupo étnico-nacional-regional.
El presidente de los Estados Unidos es un Racista de Mierda; su conducta es una vergüenza nacional y mundial.

Al mismo tiempo de jugar deslizándose en la nieve y ti-
rarse bolas de nieve, con esta oportunidad reciben una clase sobre los cambios de tempera-tura en la naturaleza.

Sunshine Co-ttage se especializa en enseñar instrucción primaria a niños con diferentes condiciones auditivas, capacitándolos para un futuro productivo. dente Dr. David Jurenovich y Brian Wickstrom, Director del Departamento de Deportes, quienes –en conjunto con per-sonal académico, porristas y la mascota RED The Cardinal– satisfactoriamente dieron emo-tiva bienvenida a Eric Morris, recientemente nombrado, en-trenador en jefe del equipo de fútbol UIW Cardinales.

The San Antonio Cocktail Conference (SACC) had much to celebrate with several downtown locations taking part this past weekend for patrons waiting for libations.
To start things off, opening nigh was held on Thursday at the DoSeum where guests had the opportunity to enjoy fun, cock-tails and food. Cocktails were provided by: Añejo Patron, Seer-sucker Southern Style Gin and Rebecca Creek Fine Texas Spirit Whiskey. Restaurants including Chocollazo, The Cookhouse and The Granary provided.
Walking around the DoSeum, lights would guide you to the right path and games around the entry made you feel ready for what the weekend ahead offered. For those seeking a respite from too many cocktails, the SACC offered yoga on Friday morning to allow many to start the day in a calm and relaxed manner.
Saturday was also packed with highly educational seminars led by industry leaders from around the globe including “Regionality Within Oaxaca.” The session ex-amined the exponential growth of Mezcal in recent years within Oaxaca.
Francisco Terrazas and Emma Janzen led the discussion about how this precipitated to a crowd-ed market, where bar profes-sionals and customers may rec-ognize certain regions. They also discussed the history and characteristics about what make Oaxaca unique.
Later on in the night was the exquisite Waldorf on the Prairie showcasing the old-time charm the hotel has to offer. Guests had the opportunity to dance, and enjoy food from restaurants

S.A. artist Vincent Valdez showcased at Washington’s National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gal-lery in Washington D.C. is world famous for its collection of 200,000 portraits of prominent Americans, in addition to images of prominent American artists. We enter the gallery wondering where they keep George Wash-ington’s portrait by Gilbert Stu-art. The Portrait Gallery’s reason for existence is admirable: for the purpose of helping us “under-stand who we are and remind us of what we can aspire to be.” It is one of the most visited galleries in the nation’s capital, if not the entire country.
Valdez’s exhibit, The Face of Battle: Americans at War 9/11 to Now, opened last spring and is set to close at the end of January, 2018. It is a timely exhibit given that the Iraqi-Afghanistan conflict is America’s longest war and that Congressional committees ask American military leaders on a weekly basis how much longer we expect to be engaged in this conflict.
I visited the Portrait Gallery with several of the curators and learned that they sought to in-clude works of art that explored and assessed “the human costs of ongoing wars through portrai-ture.” By all standards, they were highly successful. The exhibit features works by six artists, and includes paintings, sculpture, and time based media by San Antonio artist Vincent Valdez.
A powerful black and white painting of a horse-drawn car-riage carrying a flag draped coffin hangs outside the hallway leading into the Valdez section of the exhibit. The carriage seems
to be moving slowly in a fog as an honor guard walks alongside it. Valdez devoted six works to The Face of Battle exhibit, four of which use imagery of a funeral procession. The curators allowed Valdez to have a gallery room where one’s eyes imme-diately turn to an oil portrait titled “John.” This portrait, two different funeral processions and a video are a tribute to a close friend of the artist whose service in the Iraqi-Afganistan war cost him his life.
All of the portraits are of com-mon soldiers, so “John” is with his compatriots. There are no generals or high ranking officers in the Face of Battle exhibit because the common soldiers have always constituted the vast majority of the warriors. Visitors to the Portrait Gallery will see a significant number of paintings and photographs of war leaders from every conflict fought by American military forces.
Recognizing the common sol-dier makes this exhibit unique. But there is also uniqueness in this format, as the portrait gallery thought it was also important to “bring to public attention the latest formal developments in the field of portraiture as practiced by a diverse and talented group of artists.” Valdez responded by producing a video showing a slow moving coffin mysterious-ly suspended without wheels six feet off the ground traveling through the neighborhoods of South San Antonio.
Valdez and his friend John grew up in the Southside of San Antonio in an area close to two of the city’s historical missions. As a young boy Valdez admired the artistry of his grandfather
and spent his youth drawing and painting. As a young teen, Valdez took up mural painting under the mentorship of another young artist, Alex Rubio. After graduating from Burbank High School, Valdez attended the Rhode Island School of Design where he expanded his apprecia-tion of color and space. Some of his early works after graduating from college included three di-mensional wood paintings. His first oil works on canvas also
borrowed from historical themes and incidents as in the case of a painting depicting the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots of Los Angeles.
I visited Vincent Valdez last spring at his studio in Houston as he completed one of the oil paint-ings for the National Portrait Gal-lery show. The New York Times had recently recognized him for his completion of a powerful paintings depicting the Ku Klux Klan gathering in the outskirts of an unknown city. The KKK
series followed earlier paintings which he named “The Strangest Fruit,” with figures hung by the Texas Rangers, vigilantes and Anglo competitors in the freight-ing business.
Six artists are featured in the Face of Battle exhibit and to-gether they have created fifty-six works of art dedicated to cap-turing the essence of battle. The curators should be commended for their selection of these artists who, no doubt, succeed in giving
viewers rare insights into the lives of those in military conflict. It is not an easy subject, for one can sense raw emotions elicited by dangerous assignments and repeated deployment. They fight so that our nation can survive and so that we can remain free.
The fact that the National Portrait Gallery drew more than 200,000 visitors since the exhibit opened last spring speaks to an growing interest among the public in art and current affairs.

Later that night was two af-ter-parties one could not miss including the Monkey Shoulder After-Party at the Poolside of the hotel. On the sixth floor, Brand Ambassador Sebastien Derbomez and industry veterans served up some delicious Mon-key Shoulder Cocktails from their craft cocktail bar.
To end Friday night on a light-er note, Frank hosted a “Gin & Redemption” party presented by Martine Honeysuckle Liqueur. Many guests had the opportunity to enjoy Martine cocktails made with Dripping Springs Vodka, photos with monkeys and an industry confession booth.
Saturday afternoon was packed with more educational seminars including “Behind Bars presented by Monkey Shoulder.” During the seminar, hosted by Derbomez, bartending icons Ezra Star, John Lermayer and Dev Johnson provided tips and information on how to succeed in the bartending industry.
Later in the afternoon, the SACC hosted their Tasting Suites event to give guests the opportu-nity to learn about new spirits, in-ternational and regional brands all while interacting closely with ambassadors and representatives from all over the world. H-E-B provided great snacks including homemade chips and hummus and artisan bread.
The best part about the tasting suites was the monkey business surrounding Martine Honey-suckle Liqueur. As you walked in to enjoy a refreshment, three monkeys awaited to welcome
you. Guests had the opportunity to play and take photos with the monkeys to have a great memory to boot.
To end the SACC on an artistic note, guests had the opportunity to enjoy “Cocktails Under The Sea.” Inside the Villita Assembly Hall, the blue light, hanging white fishes and acrobatic mer-maids illustrated the central downtown area. Guests had the opportunity to enjoy more food, drinks and play with adoptable puppies.
Tito’s Handmade Vodka for Dog People and The San An-tonio Humane Society room
was a big hit among guests who enjoyed the cuddles of puppies named Snow White, Robin Hood and Rapunzel.
Patrons also had the oppor-tunity to enjoy drinks including “The Greyhound” and “Walk the Dog.” The Vodka for Dog People program is on a mission to unite friends, partners and fans to improve the lives of pets and their families.
With the last cocktail served, the 2018 SACC sailed away onto the Slow & Low Social Club. Guests had the oppor-tunity to taste the brand with a helping of music and games
inside Roosevelt Buffet where the poker table was the main course. Outside, guests looked on at the brand’s 1978 Chevy G20 with a fully customized rolling cocktail lounge.
The night rolled into Sun-day’s Hendrick’s Ministry of Relaxation for many who went through the hustle and bustle of the week. The Hendrick’s lounge offered an array of spa treatments including reflexology, facials and foot massages. The best way to end the 2018 SACC was with a flight of Hendrick’s Gin drinks including Negroni and a Queen Mary.
This year’s SACC is one for the books that not only provided world-class cocktails and bev-erages, but also showcased the local culinary scene that is rising in San Antonio.
Over the past six years, the SACC has donated over $500,000 to local children’s charities. Since 2012, the orga-nization has been committed to celebrating and educating for a cause, and looks forward to fur-thering its support of children’s charities for years to come.

Actors O’Shea Jackson and Pablo Schreiber set the stage as bank robbers preparing for a major heist in “Den of Thieves,” in theatres this week.
Set in contemporary Los An-geles, a city with the highest rate of bank robberies in the world, the film takes the traditional “cops and robbers” formula and gives it a high- octane boost, blurring the lines between good and evil to create a taut action thriller that is equal parts grand heist thriller and psychological crime drama.
The Los Angeles crime saga follows the intersecting and of-ten personally connected lives of an elite unit of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and the state’s most successful bank rob-bery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of downtown Los Angeles.

The haunting vocals, killer riffs, and mesmerizing sounds of alt-rock group 10 Years are coming to the STX, making stops in San Antonio and Corpus Christi.
The band is touring for their latest effort, (how to live) AS GHOSTS, featuring their pop-ular single “Novacaine.”
The Fan Summit is an annu-al event the band created to give their fans a behind-the-scenes look at the setup and performance of a live show, as well as the opportunity to see the band perform deep album cuts and fan favorites not normally played. VIP pack-ages include “6th Member Rockstar” (allows the fan to perform a song with the band onstage), “Roadie for a Day” (allows fan to help set up the band’s gear before the show), “Photographer for a Day”, and opportunities to attend a Soundcheck Party and get an onstage rig rundown with the band.
Guitarist/drummer/found-ing band member Brian Vod-inh was kind enough to speak with me from his studio in Knoxville about the new al-bum, the tour, and why there is no better place to play than Texas.
Rob Gomez- Good morn-ing, Brian. Thanks for tak-ing the time to talk to us.
Brian Vodinh- Absolutely, man. Thanks for having me.
RG- (how to live) AS GHOSTS. This is a huge album for you guys, espe-cially since this is the first time you’ve written the entire album as a group. What was that experience like?
BV- It was fun! It was the first time that we had fun do-ing it. We had tried in the past to do that, but the personal-ities involved with the previ-ous lineup made it a little bit too toxic and we weren’t able to write as a group because it always just ended up in a fight. This time around we had the right culmination of personalities to where it was a fun experience. We had times that were difficult and chal-

lenging, but the songs came together really quickly. I think we spent the most amount of time working through the vo-cals and then the actual music comes really quick for us. It was just a great experience. It also helped build a lot of camaraderie and unity within this lineup now.
RG- And the vocals are definitely a change from what you’ve done on previ-ous albums. Jesse’s (Hasek) voice is very unique and he usually uses a lot of differ-ent effects and echo. This is really is more of a straight-forward rock sound, com-pared to the other albums, wouldn’t you say?
BV- Absolutely. The pro-ducer, Nick Raskulinecz, played a big role in influenc-ing that. When we first met with him, he had listened to a lot of our older catalogue, especially the last couple of records that I produced. There are a lot of songs on those albums that have a lot of vocal layering and a lot of effects, and that’s the result of when Jesse and I are left to our own devices in the studio. We tend to gravitate towards those types of sounds. We like a really cinematic approach to production. Nick wanted to completely stray from that path this time and, like you said, present something that was a bit more of a straight-forward, abbreviated, almost more vulnerable vocal sound for Jesse. I think the result was awesome. It was weird for us, at first, to try to understand that and that it would have the power that he kept telling us it would have, but the end
result was great and we’re happy with it, for sure.
RG- Since you guys cre-ated this album as a collec-tive, does that make play-ing it live more enjoyable?
BV- It does. In the past, Jesse and I would kind of hole ourselves away and write and I would handle most of the musical duties. Then, I would always be concerned with how that would be pre-sented live, because you have to figure out who is playing what parts and everybody has to get comfortable and familiar with the material. This time around, we didn’t even really talk about the parts. Someone would play something that would get everyone else’s attention and we’d say “Hey, let’s work on that! Keep going!” Then, all of a sudden, we have this song and everybody has their parts and we’ve fallen into a groove with it… and we don’t even discuss it. On the guitars for this album, Matt (Wantland) and I never talked about who was going to play what or how we wanted to approach the song. We just figured it out with our ears and by lis-tening to one another. That’s about as close to any form of musical magic that this band has experienced. It’s really fun when the song dictates what we do as individuals and everybody falls in line in an appropriate place and we don’t even discuss it. It was really cool!
RG- In a time where most music is streamed and downloaded, how does an artist even measure success anymore? If you look at
“Wasteland”, it almost has 20 million hits on Spotify, but is it the same feeling of satisfaction as selling phys-ical copies of an album?
BV- Oh, not even close! Plays are really nice, but you definitely cannot gauge success by sales numbers any-more. In my opinion, success is measured by how many people are coming to your shows, by how many people are buying tickets and buying t-shirts. The live show is such a crucial aspect of how bands can survive now, because un-less you’re Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran, sales aren’t really go-ing to provide you the lifestyle you want! You have to get out there and slug it away on the road. That’s crucial. For us, if we can go to a market one year and have 500 people show up and then go there the next year and have 700 people show up, to me, that’s success. Success is still putting people in a room that care about your music and want to see you perform it live. At the end of the day, we’re a rock band, and rock music is so much about the live show. As long as we can keep selling tickets and people still come to see us, that’s success.
RG- Shifting gears, what is it like playing in Texas compared to other places?
BV- Oh, man! Texas is an anomaly. We always talk about how we don’t know where all these rock fans come from! You go and you play in other states, and we have great shows all over the place, but there’s something about Texas… I feel like the fans are just a bit more rabid and I feel like there’s more of them! It’s very heartfelt and heartwarming when we go there, because the reception is not only good, but the fans sing the lyrics. They know the songs. You can tell there’s just a lot of support there. Texas is awesome, man, it’s like a second home to us.
RG- I think it’s just what they put in the water here, that has a lot to do with it.
BV- *laughs* Must be! It’s something, for sure!
RG- Any special mem-ories of playing in San
Antonio?BV- Oh, man, a lot! San
Antonio, even from the ear-ly days, the Autumn Effect days, has been a staple for us. Whether it’s playing festivals or… there used to be a place there (I don’t know if it’s still around) called Sunset Station. I remember playing there a bunch. Tons of good memo-ries! I remember, in the early days, before we knew how significant Texas was going to be to us as a band, going there the first couple years of touring and quickly realizing that there’s something differ-ent about San Antonio and with Texas in general with rock music. Yeah man, we love it there. We appreciate all the people that come out. Must be something in the water, I guess!
RG- How about down here in Corpus Christi? I saw you guys here in 2008 for the Division tour and ya’ll just killed it! It was amazing.
BV- Oh, nice! Yeah, Corpus is another, man. It’s always a good show there, always good times… and of course, the Texas heat! *laughs*
RG- Oh yeah, being by the water, it’s lovely, isn’t it?
BV- Oh, man! I remember being at that Concrete Street Amphitheater before, multiple times, and being like “Well, now I know what it feels like on the sun” *laughs*
RG- What can fans expect at your 2018 Fan Summit on January 20th in San Antonio?
BV- Well, it’s going to be a good time. The Fan Summit is all about the fans and it allows people to have a little bit more of a hands-on expe-rience. There’s an opportunity to go up and play or sing a song with us. We’re selling packages like “Roadie for a Day” and things like that, so people get a behind-the-scenes look. These Fan Summits are something we have always been interested in doing, be-cause we travel so much and play the same cities over and over. This seems like a way to provide something differ-ent to the fans, a little bit of
a different experience. You can play the same show over and over, even though you change the setlist, and it’s just another concert sometimes. This gives a little bit of a dif-ferent perspective for people. The setlist will be a little bit different than usual, so I think it’ll be a good time.
RG- Before we go, any words of advice for the new generation of rockers out there?
BV- Just focus on songwrit-ing. Really, it all starts with that. The one thing I always tell people is that a good song will always be a good song. I can’t say that about the peo-ple that chase the fads and the trends. That becomes tough, because you make that song relevant for only a specific window of time. If you go back and listen to “Stairway to Heaven” or some of those classic, really good songs, it doesn’t matter if it’s 100 years from now, that’s always going to be a great song. So I think just focusing on songwriting, and of course, there’s the whole business side to it, but that’s just one of those things. Start with a good song, and then try and adapt to whatev-er the business looks like at the time to try and lift yourself up and stand out from the crowd. But, you gotta have those songs first!
RG- That’s great advice to give everybody. Thank you so much, Brian, for talking with us. We appre-ciate it. We look forward to hearing you and seeing you guys here in South Texas.

‘Thieves’ steal the show in release“The movie does a good job
of blending and shaking up the meeting of good versus evil,” said Jackson to La Prensa. “I’m glad that I was a part of a movie that blends well and forces our audience to think critically be-cause if it unfolds, people will try to predict your movie.”
The story of “Den of Thieves” is reflective of the world we live in. People are complex, the lines between good and bad are not as clearly delineated as we like to think, and often, the percep-tions of wrong and right are not simply black and white, forcing viewers to operate in the grey areas as people navigate life’s challenges.
Since there are two groups to the movie, Jackson and Sch-reiber, along with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Evan Jones had to prepare for the role of the robbers. Before starting to shoot, the “robbers” team had to go through a two-week boot camp to feel out one another’s personalities. Lets just say the
process was not a shy one, but one that led to a bond evident on screen.
Schreiber enjoyed reading the script and noticed that he not only enjoyed getting along with other characters, but he also enjoyed working on playing the foil of Nick, Gerald Butler’s character. Playing the introvert-ed villain was something that Schreiber wanted to pursue in his acting career.
“I have done a couple of projects like ‘American Gods’ and ‘Orange is the New Black’ where I played flashy and ex-travagant characters and I was drawn to Merrimen because he is quiet, soft spoken and intimating,” said Schreiber. “As a group we all started establishing our roles within [boot camp] and learned how we functioned and it set off a good dynamic between all of us, bringing in good personali-ties in the group.”
For Jackson it was not only important to build chemistry,
but to play a character that has similar traits and has the fastest speeding ticket in California history. He enjoyed getting into the character of Donnie because it was what as if he was “playing chess,” trying to figure out who is a friend or foe.
With this mental math in mind, Jackson would like to pass on that critical thinking to audience members. It was time to distribute a movie full of chemistry and characters who are not looking for clichés, but for one filled with surprises.
“I hope audiences appreciate films that aren’t necessarily the cliché films and that it calls to analyze the situation look and forces them to think critically,” concluded Jackson. “You know we have gotten used to things being laid out for us and kind of taking it easy when we go to the movies, but I hope they learn and see a unique movie full of surprises.”
“Den of Thieves” is now in theatres.
