• Pioneered By Microsoft– MS Connected Car technology was named Best Telematics Solution for 2004 at
Telematics Detroit, the largest annual telematics conference.• Key Initiatives
– North America• Connected Car Trade Association• Connected Vehicle Proving Centre
– Car Makers, Technology and System Suppliers, Centre for Automotive Research -tests, evaluates, and showcases connected vehicle systems by integrating connected vehicles, smartroadway infrastructure, and telecommunications technologies
– Europe - Many EU projects devoted to• The “continuously connected” vehicle concept, • open telematics architecture,• standardising in-vehicle platforms
• Internet Connectivity– The car is a node on the Internet with its own IP address
Connected Car Overview
• Personal Driver Navigation (Navigation)• Internet access from the vehicle (Internet)• Bluetooth enabled hands free calling (Phone)• MP3 music play capability (Music)• Vehicle Track and Trace capability via Internet portal• Fleet Light (Vehicle Journey data recording)• Stolen Vehicle Tracking (SVT)
– Based on the same Auto-txt SVT solution used by Aston Martin, Jaguar and LandRover

Auto-txt eCARMy Mobile Drive
Every individual vehicle can be accessed on-line, ensuring constant wireless communication with the driver as well as regular reporting on vehicle activity to increase efficiency and reduce costs. (Targeted to Commercial Fleets)
The Connected Vehicle
• Full duplex secure communication protocol between vehicle and host systems• Remote configuration of the vehicle module• Remote flash of the vehicle module)• Designed to European vehicle manufacturers standards)• Modular approach to software applications to enable additional functionality to be
enabled remotely. (for example OccuTek)• Bluetooth connectivity to mobile devices for Automatic Driver Recognition,
unlocking driver services and presenting these services according to driver preferences

• IN– Car Sharing – High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes (Motorways)– High Occupancy Tolling (HOT) Solo driver pay to use HOV Lanes
• OUT– National Road Pricing based on Time, Distance, Place
• So What Happens to Road Usage Charging?– Localised, Implemented by Local Councils,
• Barrier/Cordon systems in city centres with TDP in outlying areas,– Problem
• A patchwork of local schemes across the country– Solution
• Interoperability standards – Is There a Future for TDP based RUC?
• Could end up with de-facto national road pricing by the back door under a different name
• TDP using In-vehicle systems is very flexible. It can be easily reconfigured to deal with congestion hot spots on A&B Roads which Government Policy seems to not be addressing
Key Issues / ChallengesNew Government Policy for Reducing Congestion

• Interoperability– The Connected Car embodies the seamless integration of Wide Area (GSM), Short
Range (Bluetooth, WI-LAN, 802.11) and GNSS – This contributes to achieving interoperability
• Compliance/Integrity– Regular Health Checks of OBU via Short Range wireless
• Bluetooth 3 (Ultra Wide Band Communications)– car to car– car to petrol pump via Ultra Wide Band
• Public Acceptance– Privacy
• Details of where vehicle travels are not sent to off-board server• Charges are computed by OBU and sent to off-board server
– Auditing is done as part of the Regular Health Check of the OBU
– Benefits & Incentives• Occupancy Discounts• RUC is part of an overall package of services offered via the connected car service provider• Voluntary scheme? Fuel tax offsets for those who participate
Key Issues / Challenges
• The Connected Car (Vehicle) is an Established Concept– Gaining widespread industry acceptance and support
• Connected Car Embraces Both Short Range and Wide Area Communications– High Integration of multiple technologies to facilitate interoperability and position
accuracy• Provides “Anywhere Anytime” Solutions for Traffic Management
– Fast flexible response to changing road network circumstances• Newly created congestion Hot spots
• Government Policy for Congestion Reduction– HOV and HOT lanes only address part of the congestion management problem,
mostly for Motorways– Local Councils will over time create a national road pricing system by default
• Need for interoperability and standards will be key• A standard RUC package will emerge to meet demand.
• Service offerings based on the Connected Car concept will be strong contenders.
– Use of the mobile phone as the driver interface. RUC becomes part of an established lifestyle package that offers clear benefits to drivers.
