    John strides off, leaving a sullen Violet behind

    INT. KITCHEN - AFTERNOON

    John is at the cooker, Vee sits in a corner playing her

    guitar quietly and scribbling notes.

    The door opens, and SUSAN enters.

    SUSANHi daddy!

    JOHNSusan, love.

    SUSANSo.. how was it?

    JOHN..Oh, yknow. Look, youll wantsome tea anyway - help me getsome sausages on.

    SUSANDad! Stop changing the subject,youve been stressing aboutOFSTED for weeks!

    JOHNIt was fine. When youve been

    teaching as long as I have onebunch of inspectors is much thesame as another.

    SUSANBut what did they say? Did youpass!?

    JOHNRoom for improvement. Story of mylife. Now stop yakking and getsome broccoli out of the freezer.

    SUSAN(towards Vee)

    In her own little world Vee continues to strum the guitar.

    Vee stands up.

    Picking up her guitar, Vee storms out.

    Vee is sat with a keyboard on her bed, and a notepad andpen in her hands.

    VEE

    Here I am. My thoughts forbidden.I need to be where they are nothidden. Free to shout, free todance. Free to speak my mind atlast. Ok!

    She puts the notepad down, and begins playing

    John and his wife, ANNE, are sitting on a picnic blanket.

    JOHNAnne, you always want to be away,somewhere else. Dont you likebeing with us: me, Susan, Vee?Your family.

    ANNEIts a three-day course and Ivealways wanted to learn pottery. Ifeel it in my hands. I know Icould do it.

    JOHNNever enough, painting,pottery... Youve got your job inthe school. I know its onlycleaning but at least it gets youout the house. Come on, Vee.

    JOHNBut how do you know? Youre onlyyoung. At school I hear all sortsof things about festivals likethis. Lets just get some sleep.

    like this. You never go anywhereor do anything that isn tteaching maths.

    Susan enters happily with Cameron in tow.

    SUSANPromotions in the bag. What do

    you reckon, Cammy? Food was crapthough. Why did you have thatbeef? Looked horrible.

    CAMERONWasnt that bad at all actuallySusie.

    SUSANAnd the wine he chose.

    Susan and Cameron head through into the kitchen.

    SUSAN (CONT.)Really, Dad. Tasted like watereddown water.

    CAMERONSusan chose it, Mr. Cole. Cost abit too.

    Johns head is in his hands as he sits and the kitchentable.

    SUSAN

    We had to impress the boss. Ifwed chosen some cheap Italianplonk.... Dad? Are you all right?

    JOHNShes gone.

    SUSANWhat? Who?!

    JOHNViolet, shes gone. To the park,

    on her own. Shes been gone forhours.

    SUSANIm phoning the police.. Shealways was dramatic. Takes afteryou know who.

    They leave. John is left sitting alone at his kitchen

    INT. KITCHEN - LATER

    John is slumped over the kitchen table, asleep. A cup oftea sits cold next to him.

    The front door opens and slams shut. John wakes with astart.

    JOHN

    Violet?!

    Quietly and slowly Vee enters the kitchen.

    JOHNViolet! Where have you been? Ivebeen worried sick. I triedcalling you. Your phone was off.I called Amy. She didnt knowwhere you were. I thought youwere... I thought you were...
