Counselor’s Corner Mrs. Schneider, Washington Middle School Counselor Study Skills Review With the end of Quarter 1, it is a good time to look at your child’s grades and ask them to do some reflecting about their study habits. All of the students had the opportunity to learn many study habits during the Life Skills classes, including but not limited to the following: Organizational/Time Management Skills:

Mandatory Organizational Binder/Agenda/Color-Coded Folders/Pencil Pouch: Need to bring to every class.

Locker organization strategies: Organize according to classes; take home needless items. SMART Goals:

Short term/every day goals: 1) Write assignments in agenda at the start of every class. 2) Complete daily assignments. 3) Study for tests/quizzes. 4) Maintain an organized binder and locker.

Long Term Goal: The whole school has a long term goal to earn C’s or above in every class by the end of Quarter 1.

Test Taking Strategies:

Reading Strategies: Read headings, sub-headings, vocabulary, and questions before reading a chapter; make a study guide; make a story outline.

Memorization Strategies: Make flashcards and study guides; teach information to someone else; visualize the information; use mnemonic devices; study in short spurts but frequently; study corrected assignments; chunk information.

Test taking strategies:

Use positive visual imagery before the test.

Read the directions and all of the questions before beginning.

Do the easiest questions first and time manage the rest of the test.

Complete every question. Parents, please remember a behavior won’t become a habit unless it’s done repeatedly for about a month. You may need to reinforce these study skills daily so they become habits. The Character Trait that we will be focusing on at Washington Middle School for the month of November is “TRUSTWORTHINESS.” Parents, you have a very important role to play in the development of your child’s character. Please take some time to discuss the concept of “being a trustworthy person.” Here are a few points you could discuss:

How does being a trustworthy person affect your reputation? What are some situations when being honest takes courage? What are long-term effects of being dishonest to your teachers, parents, or friends, even only once? Always pursue victory in athletics with honor. Don’t tolerate dishonesty, cheating, or dishonorable conduct. The Family Activity focusing on Honesty (Trustworthiness) is attached. Please take the opportunity to

discuss the important information, then sign it and tear off the bottom part and have your child return it to Mrs. Schneider for a treat.

For other resources on Character Education go to www.charactercounts.org.

“Trust is the highest form of human motivation.” Stephan Covey

DEER HUNTING - November 20 & 21 Students planning to be absent on November 20 & 21 must complete a “Pre-Excused Absence Form” and attach a copy of their hunting license or hunter safety permit. A parent must sign the “absence form” giving permission for the student to be gone or send a handwritten note. The “absence form” notifies teachers of the student’s intention to be absent and establishes an understanding that missing assignments will be made up. If your child is struggling academically, we recommend that your child remain in school. Students can pick up the “absence forms” from the school office.
