REPORT#SUMMER2016

THE 1ST ANTARCTIC BIENNALE 3

The Antarctic Biennale is a unique cultural phenomenon, it incorporates artistic, scientific, and philosophical methodologies to address “shared spaces”, such as Antarctica, the Ocean, and Outer Space. It aims to create an intercultural and interdisciplinary platform for effective performance and communication in areas with limited resources, as well as social and natural constraints – places at the frontier of humanity. The project is initiated by the artist Alexander Ponomarev. Its first edition will culminate in an art expedition to Antarctica, one of the harshest habitats on Earth, in March 2017.The 1st Antarctic Biennale departs from standard exhibition models. It is a creative journey, expanding the parameters of what art can be today. The biennale’s creative core will be formed around a mix of global art stars and young up-and-coming names. Mr. Ponomarev calls it “a head-over-heels biennale” and “an upside-down biennale”, not only because the artworks will be prepared during the voyage and in severe expedition conditions, but also due to the biennale’s new creative cooperation principles – a biennale in process.

PRINCIPLES OF THE BIENNALE

SUPRANATIONALITY – Developing Antarctica’s potential as a cultural space belonging to no specific nation – international voices, imagining the future of global community

INTERDISCIPLINARITY – The Antarctic Biennale as a visionary collective effort to find new approaches to solve the problems the humanity is facing, using the achievements of numerous academic disciplines

INTERCULTURAL EXPLORATION – Re-imagining the function of culture in the 21st century and beyond

MOBILIS IN MOBILE! – A biennale in process. One that creates a new “mobilis in mobile” art concept, following the motto of Captain Nemo

EXPEDITION

The Antarctic Biennale Expedition will bring together approximately 100 participants – artists, researchers, and visionaries from all over the world – to explore and to think about a universal cultural future for Antarctica as a model of other ‘shared spaces’ as Ocean and Outer Space. There will be a mix of globally celebrated names and cutting-edge young voices. The expedition will visit numerous working scientific bases in Antarctica, as well as historical and natural sites. Throughout the biennale, there will be actions, performances, and debates on-board the expedition vessel. The research ship Akademik Ioffe is conceived as a floating studio, conference and exhibition space. In addition, during landings at various Antarctic locations, artists will temporarily install artworks, or engage in performances. Mobility, site specificity, ecological compatibility, artistic expressiveness and conceptual acuity will condition these interventions. When the expedition is complete, selected works created during the biennale will be exhibited in leading international museums and art centers. In addition, a documentary will be broadcast through media partners.Looking toward the future, after April 2017, the Antarctic Biennale will set sail every two years, fulfilling its purpose as a floating laboratory.

RESEARCH SHIP AKADEMIK IOFFE

Designed and built as a scientific research vessel in Finland in 1988, this 117-meter-long ship is modern, comfortable, safe, and ice-strengthened. Recent refurbishment has improved greatly the comfort and caliber of the facilities aboard the ship, orienting towards her role as an expedition cruise vessel. It has all the necessary public spaces for the planned discussion program and creative labs: presentation room, library, multimedia room, and lounge.

The Antarctic Biennale’s structure consists of several groups of like-minded people from all over the world:
