ANSWERS SCHEME (FORM 2 MID-YEAR ELSA, YEAR 2014)
Section A [20 marks]
Splashing April is the month of water. First, there is
the Water festival, and water-based activities held
throughout the country. Then, in April 14, the northern
states that shares a common border with Thailand, will host
the Songkran Festival [Siamese New Year]. This can be
celebrated by thousands off Malaysian Siamese
communities in Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Perak and Penang.
Like the Thais, they will greet the New Year by splashed
each other with water. Today, even Malaysians are joining
in the fun and Songkran have become a tourism event.
Songkran is a Sanskrit word meaning “to enter”. It marks
the end of the 12-month cycle and a beginning of a new
year. It also signifying the cleaning of all ills, misfortunes
and evil, so that one can start the New Year with all that is
good and pure. That ancient festival begins on a religious
note, with devotees pouring rose scented blessed water
over statutes of Buddha. In the streets, it is fair game as
everyone gets drenched into water, but it is all in good
watery fun.
