Está diseñado para quetrabajen de manera autónoma –dado que las instrucciones de los ejerciciosestán en castellano–, les anima a practicar el inglés durante las vacaciones deverano y les ayuda a prepararse para el curso siguiente.

Summer Practice se centra en la gramática y el vocabulario tanto como en lasdestrezas de reading, writing, listening y speaking. Va acompañado de un CDque contiene la grabación de los textos de lectura, listenings y diálogos. Alfinal del libro, hay una sección llamada Test Yourself, con la que el alumnopuede comprobar sus progresos. Esta sección consta de nueve tests queabarcan el vocabulario y la gramática estudiada en cada unidad.Recomendamos que hagan cada uno de ellos al terminar la unidadcorrespondiente.

You’re listening to Radio Rainforest, somewhere in theAmazon. On today’s programme, we’re going to tell youabout some of the strangest endangered animals in theworld’s rainforests.

The first animal is a kind of monkey called an aye-aye.It lives in trees in the rainforests of Madagascar, anisland east of Africa. It’s got one long finger and gianteyes. It uses its finger to pull small insects out of trees.

Another strange animal is the Azteca ant. It lives in theAmazon rainforest, on one tree. It’s got everything itneeds in the tree – food, water and a home. It protectsthe tree and attacks vines when they try to climb ontothe tree.

The last animal is called an antbird. There are morethan 200 kinds of antbirds and many of them areendangered. They live in the rainforests of CentralAmerica and the Amazon. They follow groups of armyants. The ants frighten insects and the antbirds eat theinsects when they try to escape.

Mary Read was a famous woman pirate in the earlyeighteenth century. When Mary was a teenager, shedressed up as a boy. Then she became a soldier in theEnglish army. Nobody discovered her secret, but she fellin love with one of the other soldiers. They left the armyand got married. However, Mary’s husband died soonafter that, so she returned to the army for a short time.

Then, Mary became a sailor. She still pretended to be aman. On the way to the West Indies, pirates attacked theship and took Mary as a prisoner.

Mary decided to be a pirate too. Another pirate on theship was Mary’s friend. She was also a womanpretending to be a man. Her name was Anne Bonny.

One day, the pirates attacked another ship. One of thesailors on that ship decided to join Mary and the otherpirates. Mary fell in love with him and told him hersecret. They got married and continued to work on theship. But soon, a ship of soldiers attacked them andcaught all the pirates. Mary Read died in prison.

Bram Stoker was born in 1847 in Ireland. While he wasgrowing up, his mother told him a lot of horror stories.In 1878, Stoker went to England. While he was living inEngland, Stoker met his wife, Florence. He also beganwriting his own stories. Dracula was his most famousstory.

While Stoker was writing the book, Dracula, he found anarticle about vampire bats. Vampire bats bite animalswhile they are sleeping. That gave Stoker an idea; in thebook, Count Dracula changed into a bat and flewoutside his victim’s window.
