DESCRIPTIONANSULITE 3% (AFC-3A) Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) Concentrate is formu-lated from specialty fluorochemical andhydrocarbon type surfactants along with sol-vents. It is transported and stored as a con-centrate to provide ease of use and consid-erable savings in weight and volume. It is intended for use as a 3% proportionedsolution in fresh, salt or hard water. It mayalso be used and stored as a 3% premixedsolution in fresh or potable water only. Thecorrect proportioning or mixture ratio is 3 parts of concentrate to 97 parts of water.Three fire extinguishment mechanisms are ineffect when using ANSULITE 3% (AFC-3A)AFFF Concentrate. First, an aqueous film isformed which works to help prevent therelease of fuel vapor. Second, the foam blan-ket from which the film-forming liquid drainseffectively excludes oxygen from the fuel sur-face. Third, the water content of the foamprovides a cooling effect.

APPLICATIONANSULITE 3% (AFC-3A) AFFF Concentrateis intended for use on Class B hydrocarbonfuel fires having low water solubility such asvarious crude oils, gasolines, diesel fuels, aviation fuels, etc. It is not suitable for useon fuels having appreciable water solubil-ity (polar solvents), i.e., methyl and ethylalcohol, acetone, and methyl ethyl ketone. It can be used with both aspirating and non-aspirating discharge devices because of thelow energy required to make it foam. Its excellent wetting characteristics make ituseful in combating Class A fires as well. Itcan be used with dry chemical extinguishingagents without regard to the order of applica-tion to provide even greater fire protectioncapability.

PERFORMANCEFire Performance The fire performance ofANSULITE 3% (AFC-3A) AFFF Concentrateis measured against specifications and stan-dards such as U.S. Military SpecificationMIL-24385B but is not on the QualifiedProduct List (QPL). ANSULITE 3% (AFC-3A) AFFF Concentrate has also beentested to Underwriters Laboratories Standard162 (Latest Edition). Reports covering thisfire performance are available on requestsince standards and specifications such asthose cited are continuously being upgradedand changed.Foaming Properties When used withfresh or salt water or water of any hardness,at the correct dilution with most conventionalfoam making equipment, the expansion willvary depending on the performance charac-teristics of the equipment. Aspirating dis-charge devices produce expansion ratios offrom 6:1 to 10:1 depending primarily on typeof aspirating nozzle and flow rate. Sub-surface injection is a special case wheregenerally expansion ratios of 2:1 to 3:1 arepreferred but up to 4:1 is allowed. Non-aspi-rating devices such as handline waterfog/stream nozzles or standard sprinklerheads give expansion ratios of 2:1 to 4:1.Proportioning ANSULITE 3% (AFC-3A)AFFF Concentrate can be easily propor-tioned (at the correct dilution) using mostconventional proportioning equipment suchas:
1. Balanced pressure and in-line balancedpressure pumped proportioningequipment
2. Balanced pressure bladder tank typeproportioners
3. Around the pump type proportioners4. Fixed or portable (in-line) venturi type
proportioners5. Handline nozzles with fixed induction/
pickup tubesThe minimum and maximum usable temper-atures for ANSULITE 3% (AFC-3A) AFFFConcentrate in this equipment is 35 F (2 C)to 120 F (49 C) respectively.
Storage/Shelf Life When stored in thepackaging supplied (polyethylene drums orpails) or in equipment recommended by themanufacturer as part of the foam systemwithin the temperature limits specified, theshelf life of ANSULITE 3% (AFC-3A) AFFFConcentrate is about 20-25 years. The fac-tors affecting shelf life and stability forANSULITE AFFF Concentrates are dis-cussed in detail in Ansul Technical BulletinNo. 54. If the product is frozen during stor-age or transportation, thawing will render theproduct completely usable. Mixing afterfreeze thaw cycling is recommended.Compatibility Certain specifications suchas U.S. Military Specification MIL-F-24385(latest amendment) require that productsplaced on the Qualified Products List (QPL)for that specification demonstrate perfor-mance compatibility in all mixtureproportions. With regard to non-qualified (QPL) AFFFtype concentrates, they should only be mixedin an emergency, or if the manufacturer hassupporting test data to substantiate that themixture meets the same requirements as theindividual component concentrates. Refer toAnsul Technical Bulletin No. 48 for a moredetailed discussion of compatibility.Different types of foam concentrates, i.e.,AFFF, protein base, etc., should not bemixed under any circumstances.Materials of Construction Compatibility Tests have been performed with ANSULITE3% (AFC-3A) AFFF Concentrate verifying itscompatibility with standard carbon steelblack pipe and pipe manufactured from var-ious stainless steel or brass compounds.Alternative pipe, plastic fittings, and valvesmay be used in some cases if acceptable tothe customer and/or the authority havingjurisdiction. Refer to Ansul Technical BulletinNo. 59, Form No. F-90109, addressingacceptable materials of construction for usewith Ansul foam concentrates.Galvanized pipe and fittings must not beused in areas where undiluted concentratewill contact them since corrosion will result. Please first consult Ansul Fire Protection forspecific guidelines concerning materials ofconstruction.Inspection As with any fire extinguishingagent, ANSULITE 3% (AFC-3A) AFFFConcentrate, whether in the concentrate orpre-mixed form should be inspected periodi-cally. NFPA 11 Standard for Low ExpansionFoam and Combined Agent Systemsrequires that foam concentrate samples besubmitted to the manufacturer or other quali-fied laboratory for quality condition testing atleast annually. Contact Ansul for further infor-mation on annual inspection.

Factory Mutual Research Corporation Approval GuideIt is impractical for Ansul to list its ANSULITE3% AFFF Concentrate with every piece ofU.L. listed hardware. Moreover, there arenumerous foam hardware components with-out U.L. listings that cannot be listed for usewith any AFFF concentrate. Many unlisted pieces of foam hardwareshould be similar to those listed. However,on installations where ANSULITE 3% AFFFConcentrate may be used with hardwarecomponents of significantly different typesthan those tested, contact Ansul for recom-mendations.
