SCOTLAND IN STITCHES

The Great Tapestry of Scotland: A unique project to stitch the entire story of Scotland from pre-history to moderntimes.

The Great Tapestry of Scotland is the brainchild of oneof Scotland’s best known writers Alexander McCallSmith The Scotland Street author together withhistorian Alistair Moffat and the artistic talents ofAndrew Crummy not to mention stitchers from allover Scotland form a team set to produce the world’slongest tapestry through one of the biggest community arts projects ever to take place in Scotland

The creation of the tapestry initiates a legacy projectworth its length in gold It is a unique and outstandingopportunity to tell our nationís history and to involveas many people as possible in the telling The aim is tocreate a series of over one hundred and twenty panelsthat tell the key stories in Scottish history everythingfrom Duns Scotus to Dolly the sheep

This exciting project will use a range of embroideryskills and over miles of woolen yarn to translateAndrew Crummy’s descriptive artwork into a colourfulskilful and textural depiction of the history ofScotland To date there are stitchers in practicallyevery area of Scotland committed to taking part all ofwhom share a passion for Scottish history and somepretty impressive sewing skills These volunteers willwork together for over hours per panel from locations around the country islands and mainland tohelp make Andrew Crummy’s artistic vision a realityand gift The Great Tapestry of Scotland to the nation

The Great Tapestry of Scotland will be created like theBayeux Tapestry on embroidered cloth rather than awoven tapestry It will be annotated variously inEnglish Gaelic Latin and Scots with surface stitchingin a variety of yarns creating a wonderfully rich andtactile artwork A defined range of stitches will beused including stem split and chain with filling stitches like long and short satin and darning andcomposite stitches where appropriate The tapestrydesign currently consists of over panels
