Historical artifacts are most powerful when they tell a story and help us establish a personal connection to history. Of the numerous

historical treasures acquired from the Taper Collection, one unique item in particular stood out for me personally. It didn’t hold the symbolic power of the stove-pipe hat, nor the authority of the Presidential seal. It was, instead, a small ink-stained slip of paper with a few sentences of legalese and a few hastily scribbled signatures; the Promissory Note. When we think of Abraham Lincoln we tend to think of the triumphs, his success as an attorney, his political

victories, his leadership throughout the Civil War, and the victory over slavery. Yet this small slip of paper written in 1833 represents a failure, likely the biggest failure that Mr. Lincoln had ever suffered up to that point. Lincoln and his partner William Berry hoped that by purchasing a stock of goods for $379.82, purely on credit, their small store in New Salem would prosper. Sadly, the store would fail shortly thereafter and his former partner William Berry would die, leaving him with the bulk of the debt. Though swimming in debt and suffering the ignoble punishment of having his personal property seized for auction Lincoln continued to push through this adversity. While many may have abandoned their responsibilities, he refused, eventually retiring the entire debt through hard work and self-sacrifice. Today, many historians cite these events, among others, as proof that the campaign nickname “Honest Abe” was rooted in reality. And like Mr. Lincoln, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation, with the help of our many friends and generous donors, will persevere and strive on to complete our “Unfinished Work.” We sincerely thank you for supporting us in this mission.

Annual Report FY 16Preserve

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation ended Fiscal Year 2016 on sound financial footing. During the Fiscal Year, the Foundation’s Net Worth increased over last year’s ending balance.

Donations from individuals, memberships, corporations and foundations, and the Lincoln Leadership Prize event remain important revenue sources. Royalties from the Gift Store and Restaurant operations provide support for the Library & Museum, as 100% of the royalty revenue is returned for use in programming, exhibits, theater, education, etc. Additionally, the Foundation was able to provide direct financial support to the Library & Museum through grants, sponsorships and restricted donations.

The Taper Collection expense continues to be reduced. Taper artifacts are on display in the Museum, as well as being on loan to other Museums for their exhibits. An exhibit during the year highlighted artifacts from the Taper collection that have been underwritten by individuals and organizations. There are still many fascinating artifacts remaining to be underwritten.

Our investment asset base is conservatively managed with a mandate to hold 70% of our assets in bonds and short term secure instruments and 30% in diversified equities. This mix has provided consistent returns over the years with a minimum of risk and volatility. For Fiscal Year 2016 our balance sheet showed a slight decrease in the value of our investment assets.

We appreciate the loyalty, trust, and support from our many members, donors, and supporters at all levels. Without you, we would be unable to provide essential financial support to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum.

4 Annual Report

Annual Report FY 16Preserve Another fiscal year has come to close and what a year it was.

During the first six months, we concluded celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Abraham

Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM) and the 150th anniversaries of the end of the Civil War, Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address and sadly the passing of our renowned 16th President. We spent the last six months of the fiscal year commemorating the 16th anniversary of our Foundation, founded 16 years ago in preparation for the building of the ALPLM. In a year where 16s abound—2016, our 16th year of protecting, preserving and advancing the legacy of our 16th President—we once again turned to you, our generous supporters working in partnership with us to successfully advance, build and grow our mission.

The National Center for Charitable Statistics reports there are about 1.5 million nonprofits in the U.S. with 18,000 in the state of Illinois. That leaves the ALPLM and our Foundation sailing in a sea of 1.5 million nonprofits! It is sometimes difficult to make our voices heard and to “compete” among so many worthy

charities, many of which have been around for more than a century with tens-of-thousands of contributors who give generationally. And yet, we are not left to the fate of the winds. We are sailing purposefully on a charted course heading in the right direction. You, our generous benefactors are the reason why. Your support buoys us and helps us weather the stormy economic times. A review of this report tells our story—how with only 16 years under our fundraising belts, we have amassed a generous, thoughtful and loyal following of contributors. We cannot thank you enough, but we shall surely try. On behalf of all of us at the ALPLM, our Foundation and most importantly of all, Abraham Lincoln, I thank you and invite you to continue to work in partnership with us as we advance his Great American story. Thank you.

Our Generous Donors"With Firmness in the Right: Lincoln and the Jews" Exhibit"With Firmness in the Right: Lincoln and the Jews" opened August 3rd at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and ran through November 15th. This powerful and well-attended exhibit shed light on Abraham Lincoln's relationship with the Jewish population of Civil War America and included Lincoln letters, documents, Bibles and other artifacts from many different sources, including the Shapell Manuscript Foundation, the Chicago Historical Society, Brown University, the Library of Congress, the National Archives and our presidential library.

The exhibit was inspired by the book "Lincoln and the Jews: A History" by Jonathan D. Sarna and Benjamin Shapell and opened at the New York Historical Society earlier in 2015.

Generous supporters of the exhibit included Dr. Stephen and Lisa Stone who said:

"We were pleased to be asked to be sponsors of this unique program at the ALPLM. For selfish reasons, we wanted to see it! And we wanted all the members of the Jewish community in our region to get to see it and hear aspects of this story without having to go to New York. Third, we knew the caliber of the presenters that the Museum could attract would be excellent, and that the coordination of the programs would be first-rate. We treasure the book that was created, but most of all, we learned of yet another aspect of Lincoln's remarkable relationships with people from all walks of life. The exhibit was enlightening and exceeded our expectations."

We appreciate the Stones’ support and as well the generosity of the following donors:

The Shapell Manuscript Foundation, Robert and Natalie Silverman, Jean and William Soman, Robert and Joan Feitler, Frank and Linda Vala, William and Sharon Vala, Community Care Systems, Inc. and the Ira and Janina Marks Charitable Trust.

Our Generous DonorsCivil War Tech: Science Adventures in History at the Lincoln Museum Helps Children 8-12 Explore Civil War STEM Technology with Support from AT&TThroughout the 2015-2106 school year, more than 3,300 students in grades 4-8 learned about the Civil War through the scientific and technological advances occurring in the North and the South. The program, made possible by generous support from AT&T, featured hands-on activity sessions focused on topics in transportation, communication, weaponry, and medicine. Civil War Tech provided students the opportunity to learn while playing games, running science experiments, and working hand in hand with historians and subject matter experts.

On the first Saturday of every month, children ages 8-11 and their families could be found at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library participating in activities such as amputating a wounded soldier’s leg, sending coded messages via telegraph, firing rubber band Gatling Guns, building and then trying to sink ironclad ships, and working in teams to build a railroad before going to battle against opposing quadrants. Through these programs children were able to discover the science behind the Civil War.

The four most popular programs—Ironclads, Railroads, Submarines, and Telegraphs—were offered as in-school programs for schools within a 50 mile radius of the ALPLM during the spring semester. Museum staff and volunteers traveled over 1000 miles throughout Central Illinois teaching 67 programs in six weeks to middle school students.

“Civil War Tech provides ALPLM visitors and students the opportunity to actively learn about the Civil War and create lasting connections to the information they learn in textbooks. The exploratory nature of programs like Civil War Tech allows participants to study history through the lens of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This program series allows our staff to facilitate learning about subjects students have never considered before and we enjoy witnessing each time a participant makes a new discovery.” Genevieve Kaplan, Director of Education, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Civil War Tech program elements appeared at several large events throughout the year including serving as the basis for one of the museum’s monthly family days, as an element of the annual Fun Frosty Friday celebration, and the Ironclads and Gatling Guns even made appearances at the Illinois State Fair. The 2015-2016 program concluded on August 27 with Civil War Tech: Back to School. During this half-day program elements of all twelve programs took over Union Square Park across from the museum.

Thanks to AT&T’s renewed support, Civil War Tech will continue into 2017 and will expand to include teacher professional development opportunities for middle school teachers in Illinois in addition to monthly programs at the museum and 20 days of in-school programming.

The schedule for the 2016-2017 monthly programs is:

November 5 Strategy at GettysburgDecember 3 AmbulancesJanuary 7 Steam EnginesFebruary 4 Blockade Runners

March 4 InfantryApril 1 Strategy at VicksburgMay 6 Mines and TorpedoesJune 3 Trench Warfare

July 8 Bugles and DrumsAugust 5 Civil War Tech Year-End Wrap Up

Two students battle to sink the other’s ironclad ship during an intense battle between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia.

Telegraphs, the latest form of communication during the Civil War, teach students about the role of technology on the battlefield.

Our Generous DonorsThe Winnick Family Field Trip Initiative and the Caterpillar Foundation Field Trip Program“Thank you for everything. You are nice enough to pay for us. Thank you that you care about our education and thank you for putting more knowledge in us. We are thankful that you did that just for us. We can’t stop talking about it. Thanks for doing all that for us.” —Jairan, 4th grade, Decatur, Illinois

The ALPLM receives hundreds of letters from students of all grade levels sharing their experiences while visiting the museum. Many schools have reported that field trips to the museum are one of the only opportunities their students have to explore the world beyond their hometowns, and the field trip experience to our museum has expanded their horizons on many levels. Throughout the year, over 55,000 school students encounter Abraham Lincoln along with his family, friends, advisors, and adversaries while visiting the museum. The museum’s exhibits give students a look at life during the Civil War and help them connect the events in President Lincoln’s life to their own personal lives. They discover the strength, courage, and perseverance Lincoln used to educate himself, navigate through personal and professional challenges, and rise to the Presidency where he fought to preserve the nation.

We thank the Caterpillar Foundation and the Winnick Family Foundation for their valuable support to thousands of students during this past fiscal year.

“The Winnick Family Foundation proudly supports school visits to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum where students from all backgrounds are introduced to and empowered by Lincoln’s remarkable life and accomplishments.” —Karen B. Winnick, President, The Winnick Family Foundation

Thank you cards from students who went on field trips to the Museum as a result of the Winnick Family Field Trip Initiative and Caterpillar Foundation Field Trip Program.

Did you know that it may be possible to DOUBLE or even TRIPLE the impact

of your donation to the Abraham Lincoln Presi-dential Library Foundation (ALPLF)? Cor-porate philanthropic matching gift programs match employee donations, usually dollar for dollar, to an eligible nonprofit organization

such as the ALPLF. In many cases ‘Matching’ donation programs are a big part of a corpora-tion’s social responsibility initiative. Making do-nors like you aware of this gift-giving opportu-nity and the existence of these programs is vital to the success of our fundraising campaigns on behalf of our 16th President. Matching gift

programs are offered by companies around the world. The chances are relatively high that the company YOU work for has such a program! The ALPLF urges those who donate this year to take advantage of the billions of dollars in employer matching funds that get left on the table each year.

Many companies support causes that are important to their employees by matching their charitable contributions.

Matching Giftsan easy way to double the impact of your donation!

One of the largest sources of untapped funding for nonprofit organizations comes from corporate phil-anthropic matching gift programs.

Oral History DonorsThe Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Oral History Program is dedicated to preserving the stories and memories of Illinois citizens, people from all walks of life. In 2016, we wrapped up our ambitious three year oral history project on the Governor Jim Thompson administration. We’ve recorded almost 63 hours with the governor, and over 210 hours on his administration altogether. That project, together with our equally in-depth look at the Jim Edgar administration as well as many other interviews on the state’s political history, provide a comprehensive look at the state’s political history for the past seventy years. Illinois Statecraft remains our top priority, and we’ll continue to add to that in future years.

The Oral History Program also added several World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War interviews to the collection. This year’s additions include a woman who spent three years of her childhood in a Japanese internment camp on Luzon Islands during World War II, and another interview with her cousin who helped liberate that camp. We’ve also added several Vietnam War interviews, including one with a navy Seal, and another with a former Northwestern basketball star who went on to serve with the Marines in Vietnam as a reconnaissance platoon leader. One of the year’s highlights was a presentation that General John Borling gave at the museum. He regaled a spellbound audience with stories about his six and a half years in the Hanoi Hilton, recited poems composed while a prisoner, and reflected on lessons he learned over a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force.

2016 has been a year of transition for the Oral History Program. We’ve launched three new projects: Architectural Gems, People of Faith and Sports Stories. Architectural Gems aims to chronicle the story of many of the state’ architectural heirlooms. We started with the Vachel Lindsay home in Springfield and the David Davis mansion in Bloomington. Our goal for the People of Faith project is to record the spiritual journeys of faith leaders in central Illinois, with the collection representing the vast diversity of religions as currently practiced in Illinois. The Sports Stories project will start with interviews on baseball, and is meant to compliment the museum’s upcoming exhibit on baseball. That project is rich in possibilities, however, and since sports are central to so many of our lives, it will certainly grow over the years.

None of the above would be possible without the continuing support we get from a fantastic team of volunteers who help the program in a variety of ways, especially as interviewers, transcribers and editors. We are especially grateful for the generous support the program received from donors this past year, including:
